Breadscapes (Or Bread Landscapes)

I haven't baked in several months. As a baker who baked almost every day, this feels like a sin. But in any case, it has even been longer since I last brought the camera into the kitchen to take some photographs of the baking. In the olden days, I used to take so many photographs of the bread to try and sell it. At one point, I had 15 or so clients all of who bought bread just because of the photographs. After a series of lockdowns in the country I find myself in, I lost all the clients. To this day, I do not know why. Maybe the breads were not to their liking any longer, but they never complained.

I also almost opened a bakery in 2018/2019. Luckily, I did not spend any of my money. The series of lockdowns would certainly have crashed my business because I know of so many others who lost their businesses. Or I might have struck gold if I could have delivered the breads? Who knows. The fact is I am baking no longer, just once in a while when the urge to eat bread overwhelms me.

Like this weekend. I picked up the camera and brought it into the kitchen and took a couple of "breadscape" photographs. This is a very lame play on words, landscapes and breads, haha. In any case, I thought it interesting to showcase these freshly baked breads, the unbaked loaves, and the baskets I "proof" (rest) the unbaked loaves in. The linen fell perfectly in the kitchen light and I want to draw them with pencil soon. I should make some art from the process as well!

I hope that you enjoy these photographs from the "kitchen" bakery! The breads turned out so lovely and I paired it with some browned butter. If you have never had sourdough bread with browned butter, you are in for a treat! But that is for a later post in the food community. For now, please enjoy these "breadscapes"!

Postscriptum, or Sometimes I Think Of Art Galleries

Sometimes I find myself in the daydreaming mode of imagining my photographs hanging in a studio or gallery. Therefore, the pretentious titles of these photographs above. For the moment, I am thinking of myself as an artist who printed his photographs and they are hanging in the gallery. What a nice thought. Making art from food! Or, food is art. Funny thoughts.

In any case, I hope you enjoyed this rather playful idea I worked on for a while. Breadscapes are funny. But oh my, they are tasty. I wish I could send some to your door!

For now, enjoy these artistic photographs of my bread.

Happy photographing, stay safe.

All of the photographs are my own, taken with my Nikon D300 and Nikkor 50mm lens. The musings are also my own.

Sort:

Nothing beats freshly baked bread, each has a recipe or hidden little added extra in your case the photography looks appetizing.

Thank you so much! Yes, indeed. Nothing like freshly baked bread. Even normal yeast bread freshly baked beats anything you can buy from the store. With all the years of baking, there are some secrets that no book can tell you; practical experience is the key.

Baking bread is something that attracts me like a Pooh Bear to the Honey Pot.... 🙃 not good for the waistline !LUV

Never good for the waistline because you can never be satisfied with one slice! And the butter and honey or jam and cheese… it’s making me want to bake again!!

Nothing beats freshly baked!

Especially with butter and jams or with a soup! That is perfect for this cold weather.

Smell of baking bread makes one weak at the knees wishing to eat....

Hey @fermentedphil, here is a little bit of BEER from @joanstewart for you. Enjoy it!

Did you know that <a href='https://dcity.io/cityyou can use BEER at dCity game to buy cards to rule the world.

You should bake more 😉
They look awesome. Love how you captured the whole process. Awesome.
Thanks for sharing 👋🏻😊 have a great Saturday 🌺

Thank you so much! Sourdough baking is a three-day process, so you need a lot of time! Need to structure life a bit more streamline to make time haha. But that is no excuse! Thank you so much. I hope you can get a nice loaf of freshly baked bread as well. Stay well!

You are welcome 👋🏻😊
I did bake bread but never a sourdough one, don’t have the starter. (Yet)
Time oh precious time. I know… wished we had more hours in a day sometimes.
Thanks, stay well too and have a wonderful new week!

Yes! More hours in a week would have been great right?

You should totally get one! If you have an established one, it is nearly indestructible (with all of your travels and such). It makes for the best breads ever!

We have already and again entered the weekend! I hope its a good one.

Yes, I wish for more hours everyday…

I know, will do. As I love to bake and sourdough is my favourite bread. I just have to settle a little so I can take to time to get organised. One does need to feed it and pay attention to it 😋

I know, time flies. Friday afternoon.
Let’s make it count!
I posted today about crossing the border to move 😎
Have a nice day 👋🏻😊

Oh yes for sure. Sourdough does not like to be rushed. It is a slow process, one you should always pay close attention to. It is rather poetic when you think about it! Yeast and bacteria battles of epic proportions; the slow rising; the smell; and the dough on your fingers! Love it. I seriously need to bake more.

In any case, good luck with that and hopefully you find some time to bake soon!

It is almost poetic indeed…
It sounds like you need to bake more 😁

Thank you kindly, let’s hope 🍀
Have a good evening!

I love these photos and I'm glad you finally decided to bake something. I haven't baked for ages either, but seeing your bread ... who knows 😂
Thanks for the inspiration and congrats on the photos and the post too, both are excellent.

Have a nice weekend 🙂

Thank you so much! No, you should totally bake again. If you like bread, there is nothing that can be compared to your own freshly baked bread!

Thanks again, and I hope the new week treats you well!

good heavens you are making me drool. Going carb-free is torture for me. I could honestly just live on fresh bread like this and real butter. So wonderful. Hopefully, we can have you over for a braai soon and convince you to bring some bread with you!

Oh damn, I would not survive carb-free. I have experimented with breads made with less than 50% wheat, but it is not the same. Freshly baked breads are something else! Plus, the kitchen smells so good. Good luck with the carb-free! I am back in Gauteng for a while, but will let you know when I am back in the Cape!

wonderful!!! BRING ME BREAD OMG!!!

I feel the same! Baked again two days ago, the bread is long gone and I want more!!

Yumyum! Perfect weather for it!

Exactly! Soup and bread is always a winner especially with freshly baked bread that is still a bit warm!

Soup is just an excuse to eat the bread 🤣🤣❤️❤️

Making art from food

Haha I have though of that too :)

One of my projects at the photography college was to shoot food in a very subtractive way so that they resemble to landscapes. I had even printed a couple of them on 2 meters canvas and submitted them for evaluation to some art critique!

The judge hated them and over the years I misplaced the prints and I don't know how did I manage to lose something so big but I did :)

Loved your breadscapes!

Those would have been stunning to still have around! The art judge sounds very judgmental. That is not cool.

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!

I always forget the photographer, but he took photographs of food in strange lighting to emphasize the strangeness of everyday food. It really became art! (Ah, Edward Weston's photographs if you are interested.)

It's not the problem that he was judgmental, it is that he was very rude to a young student that couldn't respond on the same tone. Maybe that's why I still remember him :)

Anyway my pictures weren't that good and not even close to the level of Edward Weston, that Cabbage Leaf is a visual poem!

It is beautiful visual poetry right? Some people just have talents you cannot even think of mimicking.

Oh that is not nice. It is such a shame that people have to be like that sometimes. I can understand some critical remarks, but it never nice when it overwhelms so much.
