The Art Of Owning Up To Your Choices

Apparently writing on paper makes you old school and not in the good sense of the word. It also makes you kind of a retard, who can't keep up with the world, that's what some people think.

Not long ago I had a conversation with someone who's using post-it notes to write down data, relevant information, facts and I'm not sure if he's trying to make this look less shameful or he really believes it is shameful to use pen and paper, but he always says this shows his age and how old-school he is. He's not even 40 by the way.

It annoys me a lot to see this mentality and had a chat with him to see if he realizes not everything has to be digital, not everything has to be done digitally and there are other reasons for using pen and paper, like in my case, not just because you're old and retarded digitally. He's jaw dropped when I revealed my story and hope he is able now to see things differently and own up his choice. You don't have to call yourself old and stupid just because you are accustomed to handwritten notes.

Before I go on, I have to let you know, that if you (by mistake) will see me at a Hive event or we meet at another event, I mean conference type, where programs, apps, dapps, projects are presented, I'm 100% sure you'll see me with a notebook and a pen in my hand. Why? Because I like to take notes. Yes, notes on paper. I'm not digitally illiterate, I can assure you that, but when it comes to taking notes, I still prefer pen and paper and I'll tell you why.

The simple reason is, ... well, first let me ask you why are you taking notes in the first place? I do it because I consider the data or information I'm writing down important and useful, so I'd like to have it in the future. Which automatically means I want to keep it in mind. And this is where pen, paper, and my handwriting comes in the picture.

What so many don't know about me is that I have a very good visual memory and most of the times, the handwritten paper appears in front of my eyes and I can read what I wrote on the paper, without actually seeing it. This is a huge gift, an ability or call it whatever you like. It helps me a lot and if I am labeled old-fashioned for this, so be it.

During my university years, my notes were sought after because so many said these are easy to read and learn from. My notes were obviously for myself, to help me study faster and more efficiently, but was glad others were happy to use them as well.

These days I see trying to fit the mood and the expectation of the masses is more important than being yourself and walking your own path. Adapting to the trend, adopting what others do, in order not to be outside the line, of the so called "social requirements" is what many do, regardless of the costs.

I don't understand them honestly. They want independence, freedom, fame most of all, wealth as well of course (but this is a topic for another day), yet they are doing what the crowd does, even if it's not good for them.

When I see such cases, especially those who are so vocal when they see you doing something different and not miss the occasion to attempt to shame you, just because you're different, I always think of how different the world would be if the hers would try to use their heads and figure out a way to be better, what and how they could do to get ahead in life, on their own.

We are all wired in a different way and having some skills that sets you apart from the pack can take you far, but of course, it takes some courage to be different, in the first place, then some dedication and effort too, to discover you could do things differently.

I used to think jotting it digitally was really helpful until I realized I never went back to those jottings

In a way writing on paper helps it stick more to the brain.

Exactly! Digitally typed texts are all the same and I it doesn't help me as much as handwriting.

Guess I am a 'tard then as I still use pen and paper over the keyboard for words and sums. I find I can retain knowledge easier and deeper that way, always have done probably always will do. When I did my degree in the distant past I always wrote stuff down and built around it. Same in the recent past, during investigations, I always took hand written statements, and made notes on paper rather than Ipadding the fucking stuff, like my peers did.
I am king 'tard!

Bloody love cakes too!

Exactly! It helps me a lot too and not to mention it keeps your brain active. Kids these days can't read, can't count and some can't even read the time on a traditional clock. All this digitization leads to ... losing a lot of skills as well.

Me tooo 😆

I do take notes of events I gotta attend or appointments, simply because it's a easier to catch them, you won't lose them if your phone/pc dies or it can't be deleted by a backspace... But I just think everyone has its own system and as long as he's fine with it no one should put the mouth

But I just think everyone has its own system

And then some have none. Just waiting for others to pave the way, to solve the problems, to feed them.

as long as he's fine with it no one should put the mouth

That we agree on.

There's research showing that writing by hand vs typing activates different parts of the brain and reinforces learning and memory. I don't have a cell phone and there are lots of and written lists all over my house. I just don't trust everything to be digital. What if the power grid goes down?

That is very true and not something we should neglect. Yet, typing is more spread these days.

Power is definitely something to factor in, when you decide on the form of writing. Power issues are definitely making digital life complicated. Imagine Africa is hit by constant power outages.

This story accompanied with these sweets and flowers, gotta say it's perfect to enjoy while reading. And you are so tight > people usually deeply desire one thing, yet keep doing opposite, cause it's easier and safer to follow the crowd and then complain that things aren't right and as they wanted.

Ooops, I just sent it and wasn't finished. Wanted to say about those paper notes, I like to take them, too. And I usually rewriting them, to be parfect and organized but that is some other psycho issue. :D

Exactly my thoughts. You need some courage to do what you want and possibly face the critics and defend your choice, but after all, it's your life, why let others boss you around, right?

Erikah, I'm with you on using pen and paper. I find taking notes helps me to remember the subjects more clearly. You would giggle if you saw how many notebooks filled with various categories I have in my desk and throughout the house, depending on what I'm working on.

Old school, perhaps, but non the less a very effective way to stay organized in my opinion. I still have pads of post it notes and use them all the time. I mean, that's what there for, LOL. Awesome read! ♥

I'm glad to read you're with me as well. There's nothing wrong in keeping notebooks or post it notes, you just have to use whatever it works to make your life better.

I love writing and also love paper, a digital screen will never replace the good old paper for me.

Thanks for stopping by and reading my post 💚

This speaks so much to me. I agree my retention is better using pen and paper. I prefer paper and pen during meetings and in any seminars I attended. Back in college, I even have different notebooks for different subjects, haha. My classmates would often laugh at me because I look like a girl stuck in high school or in elementary. They used a binder notebook, while I'm not. I really love taking notes during classes, because just like you said I remember what I write in my notebook. Honestly I can even remember I put the words NOTE! Yes with exclamation point which means that is my own interpretation of the lesson discussed. And it really worked for me so much during exams. My retention is faster and true enough I never failed any exam because of my notes.
