It's $2,999 - Are you game?

Each player must accept the cards life deals him or her: but once they are in hand, he or she alone must decide how to play the cards in order to win the game.

- Voltaire -

I've never really been a gamer due to a lack of interest in sitting around playing make believe in front of a computer screen for hours on end. Being able to say, "I levelled up," or, "I killed the big boss" doesn't hold much interest. I understand that many love gaming though, and that's their prerogative.

Having said the above though, I have played computer games and had a reasonable time doing it as a younger person...until I got bored as fuck and moved on. I once played Killzone all the way to the end, killed the big boss y'all, and had the thumb-soreness to prove it and used to play Ghost Recon online with my brothers which wasn't too bad fun. Mostly though, I preferred real life and the valuable rewards that came from engaging with it.

I recall playing one of, if not the first, digital game back when I was a kid. It wasn't my own, my parents couldn't afford things like that, but one of our family friends had it...It was that game that plugged into the television set and was like tennis...It had one bar to left and right that the players could move vertically and a little ball bounced around the screen. The players had to bounce the ball off their bar back to the other player who had to do the same. I played it for hours a couple times and then, predictably, I got bored and never played it again.

It wasn't very high-tech but it was the forerunner to what is out there these days I guess...and what is out there is mindboggling!

Recently I was out and about looking for a new multi-function-centre (print/scan/copy thingy) for my home office and whist in the store took a look around at some of the other stuff out of curiosity and that's when I came across this monitor.

It's the Samsung, Odyssey Neo G9 49" curved DQHD gaming monitor and it's bloody ridiculous! Seriously, do people spend this sort of money to play games?

At home in my office, my laptop connects to two rather large monitors; I use them for work and whilst I could do without them, they make life easier, and me more time-efficient. Both of them together cost me under $1,000 Australian dollars which is tax deductible. Doing my job generates income and doing my job more efficiently gives me the ability to earn more income. It makes sense to me.

Is it just me or does $2,999 Australian dollars for that gaming monitor sound like a lot of money? Who buys something like this for gaming?

I didn't look at the price of the computer but I assume it was also a lot. I looked up an ALIENWARE AURORA R13 GAMING DESKTOP at $4,400 Australian dollars, so assume they're all around the same cost. Add in the other bits and pieces, a fast internet service, gaming chair and so on, and there's not much change from $10,000 I guess...to play a computer game. Fucken bonkers. (Just my opinion.)

Are you a gamer and if so do you spend this sort of money on your rig? I know there's gaming contests and competitions out there and assume there's some sort of financial reward for winning so I guess those gaming at professional level might be able to justify this sort of investment but how about you? Let me know what set up you have and how it performs, what benefits it has for you when it comes to gaming.

Tiz true mate, I know people who would not bat an eyelid on dropping that kind of cash on computers gaming gear.

I am with you - total madness unless you have money to burn.

Maybe those with the money to burn wouldn't spend all day and night gaming though? 🤣

"thumb-soreness" is a good, best word for this, to describe the situation, haha.
you made me smile widely 👍

I do understand what you saying about "grow up and move on". real life indeed is better. but when the real life is.... er.... when you are put in sort of unhuman conditions, or everyday is very routine, or you need to or work all the time sitting on a chair with dusty papers.... sometimes you want to relax, and a survival shooter that raises adrenaline in your blood is a good way to add some variety to life, therefore provides you a good relax.

as for the rig - nevermind, as its nothing special. I don't spend any sufficient money on it. I have
two desktops and a few same 24" NEC displays that good for designing purposes, and never gonna go after the monster you show in the pic, haha; one of my desktops is a very dated core-quadro that I assembled back in 2012 or so... it still runs win-7 onboard and I am pretty happy about it (until I do not perform any rendering or video editing there). the other desktop I assembled about 3 years ago from second-handed parts... it is dated too, but all the games I have run pretty well, I have not a slightest impulse for a better rig

also worth to mention that I bought four copies of Benq EC2-A = a great mouse! all my compies are equipped with it now :P
I may say videogames two times have pushed me to upgrade the video card ... at the beginning of the year I bought a secondhanded EVGA 1070ti (still it wasnt cheap, x2 or even x3 of the current price, haha), and that's all that can be said about my "rig" ... I don't have it and not gonna spend decent money on that ))))

sometimes you want to relax

I understand completely and certainly don't begrudge a person some relaxation. I encourage it in fact.

I have a hobby that costs me far more than many computers combined and I can justify it as it has many elements...I think I just have trouble getting my head around sitting in a chair for hours on end, until all hours of the night killing make believe monsters and shooting make believe guns. There's a time and place I guess, and each to their own.

It sounds like you have a very utilitarian computer set up, same as me. I have a Windows Surface laptop, a pretty decent one, but it's used for emails, Hive and to download my photos and so on. No gaming.

Is it just me or does $2,999 Australian dollars for that gaming monitor sound like a lot of money?

damn that is crazy.

I like playing games but my computer is very old. I would like to buy a new one but so far I am delaying it because other things are needed more. wooden briquettes prices has gone insane... so for now I am stuck with old computer and ancient games. now I mostly play splinterlands.

It's a lot right? I mean, I wonder how people justify it. I guess maybe rich people buy them, although in this day and age, with credit so easy to come by, I guess it's attainable for most. I'll not be buying one, I've got better things to spend three grand on.

I had a lot of fun gaming as a kid, through college and even beyond. I don't much now for a couple of reasons. More recent games don't have as much appeal to me but primarily I don't have the time. I would and have spent a good chunk of money for a good computer and GPU but not just for gaming. Curved monitors have never appealed to me and I certainly wouldn't spend thousands on one though.

Most of the people I know who would tag themselves gamers got over it as life went on. They realised that real life needs attention, that they have bigger priorities, and so they don't game anymore. It's interesting, most are more likely to have a BBQ and break out the board games you know? Like, they want the social aspect of it that doesn't really come through a headset.

I started to make a reply but, well, it turned into a multi-thousand word ramble so I made a post out of it here: https://hive.blog/hive-140217/@darth-azrael/gaming-passion-or-a-personal

I'm barely up to 1080p, and here we are with desk-filling monstrosities like that. Give it a decade to become commonplace and affordable. Then maybe I'll bite.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying...I'd have to sit on the other side of the room from my home office desk. Lol. I don't think I'd spring for that sort of money, my two external monitors and my laptop do the trick. But then, I'm not a gamer.

Also, I released that little posting thing I mentioned a while back in The Pew if you're interested.

I'll go take a look. I am also preparing my backpack for a camping trip next month. After more fine-tuning and a test run, maybe I'll have another post ready to roll.

A camping trip sounds bloody perfect! What's the weather like up your way though? (Although, does it matter? It's always camping weather.)

We're starting to get occasional days of summer heat, over 90°F (32°C), but still more rain than usual and cooler weather much of the time. We've had a couple proper thunderstorms. The regional wildfire maps are still almost blank, showing only minor incidents across Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

Ah ok, warming up. It's cold here (13°C all day) but that's winter I guess. It's been sunny though. I'll camp no matter what though, I guess I enjoy the connection with the planet and nature. (Ok, camping in the rain sucks, but I'd still go.) 😀

There is playing games on a computer and then there is being a Gamer. Two totally different people.

I know a few that had bought a monitor like you show. While nice, I found it too big when I sat at their computer. But, saying that, for some gamers, 3 monitors is a must for streaming, say on Twitch.

Do you need that to stream and game? Heck no. Is it something some would want, but depends on how into gaming you are, or digital art too? Editing video's larger monitors work great also.

I also know many people who will buy gaming computers because they are usually built better and last longer.

Saying all that.. My computer is on its last leg. 10 years and soon, one morning, it will not start. And I will not be spending 4k on a new computer. :D but would. LOLL

3 monitors is a must for streaming, say on Twitch.

If I knew what Twitch was, I might be able to comment intelligently...but because I don't, I won't. 😂

Give me some hiking boots, a backpack filled with the appropriate gear and the wilderness over gaming screens any day. Although, I did gain some satisfaction when I obliterated that big boss in Killzone all those years ago. 😆

its a balance like anything else. I love being outside. I can listen to the sound of leaves and birds all day. Hubby and I use to go camping every year and have a blast. Though I would rather have a flushing toilet...
:D

Though I would rather have a flushing toilet.

I've heard this comment many times. 😂

I've never been a gamer, although I have played a game on occassion. I have never spent money on any equipment.

It's insane, unless it's your job. ;)

Hi, Galen!

I prefer different games as computer ones don't provide the satisfaction I'm looking for.

It's insane, unless it's your job

If a person has an income that derives from needing high-end computer equipment then fair enough. Although...I think nothing of spending $5,000 or more on a rifle scope, and $10,000 on a rifle so...I guess it's all subjective. (I still don't understand why someone would spend $3K on a monitor to play computer games though...especially considering it'll be obsolete in a matter of months.

Hi Swiggles.

I think nothing of spending $5,000 or more on a rifle scope, and $10,000 on a rifle so...I guess it's all subjective.

Galen, I didnt get this part. You mean its ok for you to spend 5k on a scope, it may deserve it?

Yes, it is all subjective and depends on your income level and your fondness... its a good thing to pamper yourself with luxurious things that you will use often

!BEER

I didn't get this part. You mean its ok for you to spend 5k on a scope, it may deserve it?

Refer to another comment to a community account just now.

I spend a shit-load of money on firearms and assorted equipment, for sure.

well, good for you! whatever makes you happy, thats it.

I am not a fan of those hardcore gaming gadgets hehe! The games that I indulge in are mostly simple ones which can be played through a browser or a mobile phone, i.e. they don't require high quality hardware.

Yeah, that's sensible I think, there's always better things to do with finances, and time, than gaming.

😂😂🤣🤣🤣😂😂 I have to admit that's a lot of money to spend on a game. It looks too big and consumes space in my own opinion. I love games with consoles which doesn't take too much space. The highest I've spent on a game which is my PS4 was around $800 with the two game CDs I got with it and extra game pad. That was 2 years ago. I don't even fancy an upgrade to PS5... I don't intend changing it...if it's not broken...no need to fix or change it hahaha.

I don't fancy adventure games but I only try my hands on Mortal Kombat and I really love Grand Theft Auto...but my favourite would always be football games, preferably, EA Sports FIFA games. I love car racing too.

I get bored of adventure games but never bored with football and car race. I haven't even played so much recently due to busy schedules.

PlayStations aren't too bad from a price perspective as one can utilise the existing TV, but they still have lots of add-ons. I guess I just don't see the point; I get bored with them too quickly.

Yes, they have a lot of add ons. You get bored of them easily so it's understandable. They excite me, especially the football part... But for that one of $2,000+ that's too much...well for those who are addicted to it, might not be too much but we are on the same page, we both won't be getting such 😂😂🤣🤣😂🤣🤣😂🤣. Too pricey.

You really don't need such high tech stuff to just have fun on a videogame. My system currently costs about $300 let's say, it's a 8 year old system and it barely just gets the job done. But for a proper "high-tech" experience and a new system, a $1000 US dollars should be enough right now.

If we're talking normal videogames, mostly story based or offline, they don't require the latest tech. But if it's competitive, especially the FPS category, then every bit of the latest tech adds up and helps to compete.

I've been playing competitive FPS for almost 4 years now. I've ranked up high in my country many, many times, Top 1, Top 3s, also globally on some categories. I've made a decent amount of "moolah" as well. Sadly, it's quite tough to shine in the competitive gaming sector in the South Asian region. Almost no support, sponsors or investors, unstable internet connections, not having proper access to the latest tech.

You have to be really, really good to stand out and to just make a few bucks. Only the international tournaments offer a proper amount as prize money, but those happen once or twice a year. On top of that, we have to face players who have better hardware and internet connections, and that means we end up losing most of our head to head challenges against them.

In the end, it's our love, passion and competitiveness that keeps us going, helps us stay on that grind mindset.

Also, the friends and mates we play with, the online playground is like a hangout spot for many of us. I've met a ton of people just from playing games online, and many of them right now are nothing less than family to me.

As a professional gamer how does that fit in with your job, or don't you have one? Is gaming your job?

Nah, gaming isn't my job, only a few have "made it" here, but even that came with a price.

One day maybe I'll get there, as a content creator, because the competitiveness is slowly dying out. Currently the gaming scene here doesn't promise you much either, but we are getting there though, somewhere at least.

And this hobby of mine fits well with my routine and life I'd say. All the office work is dealt with by the evening, then I sit down and browse on PeakD or do a little reading. Nowadays it starts off a bit late, after dinner there's 2 to 3 hours of a gaming session with the teammates or friends. Some nights we play some nights we don't, but we still somehow maintain our form and try to improve.

Seems like professional gaming isn't a very good target to aim at if it's so rarely attained.

For most of the countries around here it's tough, because of a weak structure, or no structure at all in some places. But there many countries that have that structure set, and good players are actually making really good money.

E-sports and the gaming industry is currently bigger than the movie and music industry combined. Sadly, some countries don't really promote it properly, because they don't understand it.

Yeah, I know about the e-sports thing but if ire it, I prefer the real thing. It's all personal choice though. There's a place for computers, but I don't think they should replace the real world which seems to be the way it's heading for many.

It's not replacing the real world any time soon. Even a professional top ranked player gets enough time to head out and get some fresh air, invest time in physical sports and all the other stuff the world has to offer.

But like you said, it's all about personal choice. Because I do know some players who spend all their free time playing videogames or just sitting in front of a TV/PC. That's just a bit too much I'd say.

2 weeks ago and just bought a new setup. Been over a year since I have had a computer.

I paid 2k for the computer and I bought a 27" screen from AOC for 120 usd xD

The crazy shit is that, my screen is big I feel like, imagine having to turn your head to see the enemies you are fighting xD
That Samsung is very too big xD

Congratulations on your new computer. I bought mine two years ago (Windows Surface laptop) and it's still going strong. (Fortunately, considering the cost). I'm hoping to get a couple more years out of it.

Yeah, that screen is immense right? I think a person would have to be a fairly dedicated gamer to spend the money.

Thanks! Its nice to have a computer back, so I can disengange with society and waste my time even more :P

Windows Surface should be a really decent Laptop! So ye hopefully it lasts for a couple of years :D

The Screen is too biiiiig.
Like my 27" is big if you ask me, its the biggest computer screen I have ever had.
I wouldn't know what to do with a 49" screen xD
You gotta sit so far back, too be able to see everything though! :D

Properly good for watching twitch though xD

If I had a screen the size of the one in this post I'd have to sit outside of my home office and look through the window to see it all in one glance! 😜

Ye it would be insane haha!
Better like a tv or for console gsming :D

I'd not even spend $3K on a TV to be honest. (Ok, maybe I would) 😜

Me neither, but I also have a computer and I dont watch tv xD

Is it just me or does $2,999 Australian dollars for that gaming monitor sound like a lot of money? Who buys something like this for gaming?

Yes people do. It's all about passion tho.

Also some gaming laptops have the ability to do some high end graphic design and animation.

So if one is into gaming and graphics, it could be a win win case.

However, I rather buy a console and a laptop.

A PS5 console costs just below a thousand dollars and a laptop might be roughly 500$

I hear you loud and clear. I just don't get why someone would pay this sort of money. Sure, passion, but justifying this sort of money? It's a lot, even for a 1st world country like Australia.

I've played a few computer games when I was younger. Problem was after about 10-20 minutes I was bored as then went outside to do real life😁 one of my nephews play's games for hour's upon hour's no wonder he is fat and lazy at just 14😱

after about 10-20 minutes I was bored as then went outside to do real life

Exactly!

one of my nephews play's games for hour's upon hour's no wonder he is fat and lazy at just 14

Nuff said bro.

It boggles my mind how he can sit on his fat bum for hours playing fake life.

I know...A whole real world out there and they want to play with zeros and ones on a computer screen. Talk about being in the Matrix.

Indeed it's crazy.

If you dont have a gaming chair.. are you really gaming?
Much like optics on a rifle.. If your minitor and/or computer chair dont cost as much or more as the computer... your not really doin it right! haha

I spent around $2000 on my computer, but I ended to put it to work, storing and delivering content on the @spknetwork

I feel like im just now getting to the age where im realizing how much time i've wasted playing video games, and Im wanting to be more productive.

Yeah, I know a few who look back and wonder why they wasted so much time on computer games. I think there's a place for it, but when it becomes obsessive it's time to look elsewhere. Just my opinion, as someone who wasn't a gamer. I guess I see far more value elsewhere and in other things.

I've never gone for the really high end hardware - but the only games I've ever played on any of them are the little flash games on my forums. Those don't even require a pc to have 4 gb RAM, and the game fully downloads before you begin. Not that I've had time to play since getting into crypto and Hive 😂

Those don't even require a pc to have 4 gb RAM

My first computer was an Amiga 500 (512kb of ram) back in the late 1980's. It sounds weird to say it now.

Incredible how fast technology is advancing... It makes me wonder what things will be like in fifty years.

It'll be interesting, fortunately though, I'll not be here.

You wouldn't want to see it??? Hopefully we will be smart enough to make the future a good one.

I think the world is going down the toilet, humanity too. No, I'd rather not see it. I don't like most of the nutbaggery out there right now, let alone fifty years from now.

Hopefully we will be smart enough to make the future a good one.

Lol. Hmm, well I think not. That doesn't mean others can't disagree though.

I think the world is going down the toilet, humanity too.

I think its already there

We can always hope others are seeing the direction humanity is headed in. It's not very difficult!!! And if we can all see it, wouldn't we want to stop it?

!PIZZA !ALIVE

I'm not a gamer. I've never played an online game with others, although I've played a few games on my own computer (I know, not the same) and I had a ninetendo many years ago and enjoyed it. I was married then though, so although it was fun and I could see how it could be addicting, I had other responsibilities ... you know.... life.

Pong ! We had pong when I was a teen. My Mom was working part time at Sears and I can't remember for sure if someone bought it and brought it back or just what it was, but she somehow got it for a steal, otherwise we wouldn't have had it either. We played and played that game and it was a lot of fun. Like you said, it was the only game that existed....new and novel. After all the games that have come and gone since then, I'm sure it would appear boring now, but when it first showed up, it was the bomb !

I cannot imagine paying that much for any monitor, but I understand those type things are all point of view, depending on whether you are into it or not. From my view, it's a little crazy !

Pong! Yep, that's the hat it was called, I couldn't remember the name. Pong, catchy name huh?

I guess it all comes down to priorities. I know someone with only a little money that spends so much on gaming...Maybe their efforts could be better spent getting a better job though? Priorities. I'd never spend so much on a thing just for gaming, sitting in a chair for hours with no tangible result at the end isn't my thing.

Pong though...they should bring it back. It'll be huge! Pong 2.0.

Hahah yeah that’s pretty crazy dude but I don’t doubt people buy it. I used to be addicted to games but in a manageable fashion. I played them a lot when I was younger but also spent a lot of time doing other important things like skateboarding and all that so I had the best of both worlds for a while. Now the only game I play is Splinterlands and that’s just for a little bit at night when I can, usually 90 minutes or less.

When it comes to spending money though, some of the people take no prisoners when it comes to equipment! The companies know this so they offer shit like this lol. I refuse to get that though! I don’t do the whole curved monitors and all that. It’s too new and I’ve always been one to wait years before getting something like that. I still have my TV from 2007! Lol.

I get how addicting gaming is though, and that’s why I’m keeping the little man away from it as long as I can. Fishing and being outside are his interests right now and I’m doing everything I can to foster that!

I think some balance is a good way to go, being obsessive about a thing, anything, isn't so great.

Give me the outdoors any day, I spend enough hours in front of the computer working to want to add to it by gaming.

Like you brother, I am also not a gaming girl although I have played Taken-3 when I was baby. It is ridiculous such a huge dollar amount is invested for a gaming mentor. I didn't know Australian Mentor are grabbing dollar in such way, thanks for adding into my knowledge.

I think everyone is grabbing at money as much as they can all over the world...But I agree, this monitor is a bit stupid huh?

I think not, I can say it too much cunning man 😂.

I would love that set up if I ever get in off the road.

But for now, like you, I play the game in real life. No do overs, no re-spawn. You die the game is over.

Here is my VIRTUAL REALITY GAME.
