Home Education Contest: Our Style

in Home Edders3 years ago

Hi fellow Edders,

Today I wanted to participate in the contest going on! It’s hard to narrow it down but let’s try! There's a lot of different ways to educate children, and here's my take on what's important to us!

Help learn me plz! lol

There’s a lot of great things happening in life, despite the dark cloud that’s affecting us all over the world with restrictions and much more. One of the ways we have been able to fight back against that is to focus on our little home and what we can control. When you’re able to have some sane and rational thought, you can really go into approaching things a lot better. That makes home education and schooling a far better experience for the little ones as well as the parents! I think it definitely helps that we knew before our son was born that we were going to be doing homeschooling. Coming to that decision before all of the rest makes things a lot different in terms of mentality. Willingly doing something versus being forced to do something is a much different mindset.

From the list of choices of things to talk about, I narrowed it down to some of them but not all in order to keep it not three thousand words :D.

  • Do you believe the way in which your child is being educated is preparing them for the future?
I would love to think that we are doing the best we can to equip our son to be able to live a successful, independent life. For us, success may not necessarily mean monetary success that lots of others in America strive towards, but independence and the confidence to do things on his own. It's obviously far too early to tell but I think we can already see signs in him that he will be doing a lot of these things as he gets older. One of the best ways we are able to do this is to include him on as many things as possible. Be it cooking, cleaning, fixing things, building things from scratch, donating things to other kids and families and some others. I think these things are the more important part of teaching kids. The things like reading, writing and all that are important but the primary focus on that type of stuff is where I know a lot of the education system is lacking. It seems to be more designed to produce more factory workers and people who want to partake in the "system" as it is instead of building their own way and becoming an independent mind. Just my thoughts and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with factory workers and people who don't have the most skills. There is a place for everyone in society, regardless of what they can or choose to do. We want to give our son the most opportunity to help him figure out what his little slice of society is.

  • Is the way in which you homeschool the same as you thought it would be when you first started?
The ways we are home schooling seem to change weekly and monthly. I think that's the best though! You have to adjust and adapt what you are doing to the circumstances and ways in which they learn best. We are trying to meet our son in his zone and terms so that his learning is as successful as it can be. It doesn't always mean that it's the right way to do it, if there is a "right way" that is, but it's easier to have a peaceful learning experience then to have one fighting. When we got him a book about trucks and construction things he was able to much easier figure out things like same versus different, colors, jobs and other things that he wasn't grasping in some of the other books. We try to always adapt to what interests him and that's been the best thing we've came to do!

  • What is your favourite teaching/learning moment?
I think our favorite moments are the ones where we are teaching him something or showing him something and he gets it correct, we congratulate him and give him high 5's, praise and watching the huge, genuine smile on his face! It melts my heart every time and makes up for the minutes of fighting we did before that lol. There hasn't been one solitary moment but all of those moments combined are so special to us all.

I think you have a rational approach to it. We very much do similar things, working with our girls to teach them everything from cooking and cleaning to science and computer skills. It does require a lot of time, but that is a resource there is never enough of in a day.

Haha yeah! There is definitely never enough time in a day. My wife sometimes doesn't understand that. Things sometimes always get pushed off for one reason or another but she hasn't quite agreed with me that sometimes you just need to say screw it, might as well do it now instead of constantly putting it off lol.

When they get taught the well rounded stuff I think they have a much better idea of what it’s like to appreciate the different aspects of life. Some things are good and fun but you need a broad knowledge base in order to have a good chance to figure out what you’re good at, I think!

Appreciate you stopping by!

Great post!

I agree with you, it's frustrating at times but so gratifying when they "get it".

I feel that the traditionnal school system was destroying them and deconstructing their personnalities.

Yeah completely agree that the traditional school systems destroy the kids and their vibrant personalities in favor of something that is vanilla and conforms. I understand it’s hard to teach a classroom over filled with kids but there’s also better ways to do a lot of the things they do.

We are really trying to work on getting him to recognize letters and numbers. Thankfully it’s a step in the right direction lately but it was a struggle for a bit lol. He did good when we figured out a way for him to like it with toys he loves.

Thanks for checking my post out!

Genius to work with the toys. You know what I do when they don't wanna work?

I take one of their favourite toy or teddy bear, and animate them so they become the teacher. For some reason they go the extra mile for their "friends" hahaha

Aha! moments are so precious. It's one of the reasons I love teaching.

I wonder how many people have chosen homeschooling since COVID hit? I agree that there are so many more skills kids should learn over what school teaches. Everything revolves around mainstream economies and workers, you're right -but the world needs ideas people, innovators, people who have different skills than simple literacy or numeracy.

I have a feeling we're going to need those more than ever.

Absolutely! We need more people who do things with their hands and not with a calculator or keyboard. We need all kinds of people doing work yes but we also can't forget what runs the houses, cars and everything else!

We decided when Siena was pregnant that we were going to homeschool for various reasons but most importantly because we want to have him have our morals and values not someone else's. I'm sure you'd be an excellent teacher to the little man but just a few thousand kilometers away! Lol.

Appreciate you stopping by as always!

When I think about it, the first question seems kind of loaded XD

Using their interests makes things so much easier doesn't it :D

Now that you mention it, that last part is a great reason for homeschooling! I love seeing the smile when they nail something XD I don't get to immediately see it these days as they're usually doing their own thing, but I usually get a very excited announcement shortly after, it doesn't change no matter how big they get XD

Yeah seeing the instant reaction is amazing. We get to see it being the only one we have but when he figures something out on his own he definitely comes over to share the wonderful news and it's just as good then lol.

It may have been a loaded question but sometimes you need soft balls like that! Other folks get easy ones so it's nice to get one that's fun to talk about lol

Using his interests like trucks and stuff makes it a hell of a lot easier. He gets frustrated easily when he can’t do something and will start going hulk smashing stuff it’s funny but tough to teach with that lol

It was nice reading people's responses to it XD

LoL hulk smashing stuff, I still have one that does that x_x I get where you're coming from, I do remember that stage XD

The hulk smash is funny sometimes but we are like shit, how do we get him to do certain things of this is his reaction lol. More unique methods required!

They are hilarious when they're so young and you try very hard to show that you're taking their feelings seriously while trying very hard not to laugh XD

it can't be just me right XD

The only things he really needs to learn from hulk smash scenarios is that it's almost never an appropriate reaction to things (and absolutely not under any circumstances a way to avoid doing things that have to be done XD) and that it's perfectly okay to find different ways to do the same thing ;D

if you're having trouble with the first one don't fret, I still occasionally have problems with my youngest and he's 12 x_x but it does get better XD
