A Few Thoughts on Writing Initiatives on Hive....

in #hive2 years ago

Blogging on Hive has been part of my daily and weekly routine for almost FIVE years now (come to think of it it's my fifth anniversary sometime SOON) and during that time I've found some of the writing initiatives a nice way to focus on a blog topic once a week or so.

I used to write regularly on topics suggested by @ecotrain and @abundance.tribe in their respective 'Question of the Week' and 'Bi-Weekly Question' initiatives, but these have both since ceased to be - the former because the guy who rain @ecotrain (@eco-alex) has graciously bowed out of the Hive scene wanting to focus on IRL life and the later because Kenny threw his toys out of the pram following being DVd and has just disappeared.

Anyway, I liked both of these initiatives because they typically gave me topics to think about and write on once every week or two - topics on usually ecology or spirituality, both of which interest me - and with a minimal structure to work to.

My writing on Hive as 'evolved' (some may say 'regressed') to having one topic per day of the week - I like this structure - and Tuesdays is spirituality day - and so for the most part over the last couple of years I've just written to one of those @ecotrain or @abundance.tribe questions - and it was usually easier than having to think up something from scratch myself and having a basic structure - it's just easier being told what to do!

However now these initiatives have gone and I'm back to Freestylin but missing the alternative way of 'writing to a prompt' once a week - it's just nice to have a bit of variety, so I got to digging around to see what other writing initiatives or competitions there are on Hive which run every week, fortnight, or even month.....

Writing Initiatives on Hive...

@galenkp's Weekend Engagement Concept is a great starting point - each week he gives you a few themes to write on over the Weekend and the most engaging posts get some nice rewards come Monday.

It's only monthly you get to do this but there's a relatively easy post to be had once a month if you Power up 200 LEO on Leo Power up Day and give LEO a good hard shilling too - and you can win prizes for doing so!

@cinetv's weekly (or thereabouts) writing prompts invite you to write a post on something movie related - usually this won't stretch your brain-thing too far because you're usually writing on what your favourite movies are in a certain genre, although sometimes you are pushed a bit more creatively!

There's also a weekly Make a Collage competition - not really my cup of tea but an easy enough post once a week if you're artistically inclined!

The #sublimesunday initiative is one of the more open initiatives on Hive - simply encouraging you to post about a nice experience or day out you had recently - it doesn't have to have been on a Sunday. I think it's @c0ff33a who originally came up with the concept - it's a nice one!

Any more writing initiatives you know of....?

This was never meant to be an exhaustive list, these are just some of the initiatives I am aware of - there are more, especially within the creative communities, so if there is anything I have missed please drop links in the comments below!

Once a month there's a #gardenjournal challenge that accepts anything that's going on in your garden, even if it's not a cultivated one, or even if it's not super dramatic - bonsai, apartment gardens, a single pot with a cactus or a friends botanical garden, or even your PLANS or success and failures.

Of course there's a few fiction ones but I don't think they're your thing, and I don't think you could do the Ladies of Hive one...

I didn't know Alex finally bowed out - good on him, about time. I was about to Whatsapp him to see how he was actually.

We do need someone to post these awesome questions again - it's hard work setting it up and curating though, let alone doing the questions. THere's a few people here I think would be great at posing the questions. I wonder if a team would work - if you had say, six people, you could get one person a week to host it, so they'd only do one themselves every six weeks. I reckon @trucklife-family , @stortebeker, @fermentedphil, an quite a few others would pose some wicked questions for us all! Brimming with ideas with how to bring it back. I have the keys to Abundance Tribe (a few of us do) so it could be interesting to kick start something that's not too arduous for a single person to do it and focus on the same kinds of questions as AT/Ecotrain did. Just a thought anyway. I do miss those philosophical questions that made me think.

And then there's the challenge of what to call the challenge!

I have seen the gardening journal, that would suit, good to know.

You're right the fiction one aren't my thing, only very occasionally maybes!

I think I will do the biweekly question again, but from my own account this time. Thanks @revisesociology for the encouragement, I quite enjoy writing them and doing the curation xxxx

Awesome!!!

What an awesome idea! I would love to help in any way I can. It would be awesome to see how philosophical people can get!

I just landed from a writing initiative post..

I choke on challenges, I am rarely able to write for a very specified theme but it is feasible that I can write on it on my own if it is not the part of any contest.

Not having the burden of a contest to win is actually really nice - @trucklife-family

Cheers I'll check it out, it's the taking part that counts not the winning!

In the community @holos-lotus of very interesting initiatives are made where spirituality and other topics are addressed, I leave you the link in case you want to go there https://ecency.com/created/hive-131951

Hey cheers for the tip I will check it out!

Yeah I miss those questions as well. I would love to start up a weekly question, but not sure yet how to probably reward folk for it.
I love @galenkp weekend Experiences, there is also blogging ideas from The Minimalist community and for the Ladies, there is Ladies of Hive Community writing prompts as well xxx

Thanks for the endorsement, it's much appreciated.

My pleasure, I really appreciate you creating it xxxx

It's nice to hear it said randomly, you know? I mean not in response to a reward that's been given. So, thanks. 🙂

I don't think we have to worry about rewards to be honest. Most of us just want a writign topic to sink our teeth into, and OCD/whales will reward you if it's a good one. See my other comment - it needn't be an arduous task for anyone who wants to run it. What if we got a team together?

Actually fair point!

BEER

They did a great service, typically something interesting to focus the mind! I agree.

I put out the Abundance Tribe Weekly question, really thinking about just starting it up again, but under my own blog xxxx

I think that's a great idea!

BEER

Cheers, I think I will just do it xxx

There are all sorts of 'challenges' on Hive to inspire posts. I have taken part in a few music ones. These days I tend to mainly do my own thing as I have enough for several posts each week. For people building a following the challenges can be more useful to get noticed.

I like the challenges, but some get a bit repetitive and when you've been here four years the last thing you want to do is write the same stuff again.

I don't want it to get too routine. Hive is fun for me as well as paying me something. I think communities should be a bigger thing with people socialising around their interests.

!BEER

YEah definitely, I'm with you on both counts. I don't want to be forced into writing something and sometimes I deny even writing for @galenkp if the questions don't tickle my fancy :P - so I skip a week or two until something comes up that piques my imagination and inclination.

Hey @riverflows, here is a little bit of BEER from @steevc for you. Enjoy it!

They are great, more of this sort of thing I say!

I miss abundance tribe and ecotrain too both always come up with reflecting topics to write on.

I enjoy @galenkp weekend experiences drops enough interesting topics for the weekend.

I appreciate the mention.

Thanks for the mention Revise. 😀
