Introduction

I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this and I use Python for my scripts. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.

I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.

The #teamuk tag has been used to show you are in the UK and was earning extra votes from a bot, but that has not been active lately. Using the tag may still help me to find you, but please contact me if you think you should be on the list.

The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive or are falsely reporting their location. I can also remove anyone who asks me to. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry. There is the option to be counted without being tagged on these posts if you want that.

The code to produce this post is on Github. People are welcome to use it for their own regional version. I can help you with that if necessary.

What it means

The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:

Active as above.
Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.

I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location. Otherwise I will use what is on your profile or what I am told or can deduce from your posts.

I have produced similar lists for the following countries. Active numbers are from the last time I ran them. These have used simpler queries than what I use for the UK, so they are likely to miss people. What it needs is for local communities to take up this work. The data and scripts are all on my Github for anyone to make use of. I can do other lists on demand.

Commentary

It is good to see the number of active Brits at its highest for a few months. I also see that we gained another Orca so congratulations to whoever that was. My script does not track when people move up. With the current low $HIVE price it could be a good time to power up, but that is a personal choice. We should see some people appear in the ten years column on the account age plot soon. That will be in August for me.

We are losing a Britwitness as @itsshmoogle is stepping away from crypto. I have been meaning to look into what it would take to run a witness node and I may exlore that this year.

These are challenging times for Hive with the low price and fairly low recruitment rate. The two may be connected, but we need pioneers who are interested in trying something besides the corporate social platforms. It ought to be a natural for people using other blockchains, but some seem to have an exclusive loyalty to whatever they are into. I would be perfectly happy to see talk of those other coins on Hive. We also have a lot in common with the Fediverse world who are into open source and decentralisation, but a lot of them are very set against blockchain. I think Hive counters some of their arguments by being low energy and not tied to some specific company. It has also shown resilience over ten years.

What we do have is lots of active development. It seems that new apps/dapps or features appear every week. People are taking advantage of having a platform that is essentially free to use. They can store data on the blockchain that will be preserved indefinitely and can generate posts. We are expanding more into audio and video too. I have been pondering reviving my podcast and may be able to host it on Hive. I need to look into how that would work.

I have not heard much about potential meetups apart from a possible one in North East England by @planetauto. This list was always intended to help in organising meetups, so please make use of it for that.
