Introduction

I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this and I use Python for my scripts. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.

I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.

The #teamuk tag has been used to show you are in the UK and was earning extra votes from a bot, but that has not been active lately. Using the tag may still help me to find you, but please contact me if you think you should be on the list.

The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive or are falsely reporting their location. I can also remove anyone who asks me to. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry. There is the option to be counted without being tagged on these posts if you want that.

The code to produce this post is on Github. People are welcome to use it for their own regional version. I can help you with that if necessary.

What it means

The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:

Active as above.
Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.

I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location. Otherwise I will use what is on your profile or what I am told or can deduce from your posts.

I have produced similar lists for the following countries. Active numbers are from the last time I ran them. These have used simpler queries than what I use for the UK, so they are likely to miss people. What it needs is for local communities to take up this work. The data and scripts are all on my Github for anyone to make use of. I can do other lists on demand.

Commentary

Happy new year! Hive is into its tenth year and in an 'interesting' place. The price is near the lowest, but we have lots of development going on with new games, utilities and communities springing up. For people in the UK the rewards are not likely to be life-changing, but it can be different elsewhere. In my opinion Hive still matters as it gives us an alternative to the corporate platforms that bombard us with ads and 'targeted' content. Here we have more control and many ways to access the content. If you wanted to you could set up a site that showed posts in different ways as all the data is open. You could even ignore downvotes and reputation so that everything is visible.

I do hear people complain that Hive is controlled by a few people, but that is a side-effect of it being so small. Those who got in really early and invested will have a bigger stake and can do what they want, but they cannot stop people posting. I have no real influence on what they do, but I do believe most of them want Hive to grow as their investment would suffer if it does not. I have been involved in fighting abuse a few years back, but stay out of that now to focus on positive actions. I avoid any feuds as that is unhealthy.

What happens next is up to us all. You can see that the number of active Brits has been dropping. Some have come back recently, but we are just not bringing in enough new people. We need to build communities that make people want to keep coming back.

I was thinking about adding some more statistics to these posts. One option would be a 'rich list', but I am not sure if people want to be listed like that. I welcome other suggestions.

shame the numbers keep dropping, hopefully we can find a way to atract new users and also bring more former users back to the platform. I try to avoid drama too i am here for a good time and if i want drama i will sign up to Twitter haha.

This looks like a lot of work Steve. Thanks for mentioning me. I'd forgotten all about it to be honest and read an old journal entry this morning that reminded me of the D.Tube days and the trip to Krakow. Good times. The Hive blog seems dead though, no?

I have a script that generates these posts, but I have to do some work on finding people.

Krakow was great, but it's a shame that so many people who were there are no longer active here. Hive has a lot going on with dapps. We have short-form posts via several platforms now. I tend to use the Snaps on peakd and there's an app for that. 3speak is still being developed, but video apps have some challenges.

I keep up with quite a few people here. I had to get off some of the corporate sites to retain my sanity. I hope your music is still going well. I'm mostly on drums now, but still play guitar at the pub.

Cool. I'll take a look at short-form posting as that interests me. I'm mostly on Substack now talking about books. The music has been in a lull pretty much since the pandemic. My bands broke up and the venue I played in shut down. I'm having a good time with the books, though. I wonder whether cross-posting would be frowned upon? I could easily post the same content on Hive if that would be useful. It never crossed my mind until now.

I think cross-posting is okay as long as you make it clear it's yours. Maybe tweak the content a little for each audience.

My local music community kept going with Zoom open mics and other projects so we survived the 'plague'.

Maybe it's time to power up and start posting again!
