When I went to London I was surprised at the fact that they throw all the plastic bottles away.
Think about large water bottles or soda bottles.
That's totally unlike the Netherlands where we hoard bottles like addicts.
Why you might ask?
Because they are worth money.
Every-time you buy a large plastic bottle in the Netherlands you pay a small extra fee.
You get this fee back when you bring back the bottles.
And this sure gets the Dutch savers heart beating faster!
In a lot of places you will find machines like this were you can feed the bottles into.
And at the end of it you press the green button to collect a recite you can then use in the store.
22 bottles equals 5,50 euro's!
Not bad right!

Hello dear friend, it would be great if everyone had recycling machines, both plastic and glass, and that these would be a reward for many caregivers, but here this does not exist, only glass is recycled, and this is used only in the bottling of soft drinks nothing else, everything else is waste, and this is sad.
Canada is the same, except we don't have those cool little machines to deposit the bottle into. I currently am in Mexico and there is really no recycling at all ... bottles, cans, cardboard ... all of it goes in the garbage! It just kills me!

In South Africa we have added costs to our plastic grocery bags ('bout 50c) and although it's not expensive per bag, you quickly end up collecting bags, even though we can't get refunded for it.
In a similar fashion, we tend to keep our plastic containers - margarine tubs, yoghurt jars, ice cream tubs (and even sometimes plastic bottles too!), as these are certified to be microwave and dishwasher safe, which leads to saving on container budgets!
This is interesting,, Here, NYC, we need to throw pet bottle into a recycle box, but I heard most of them in a recycle box go to the same waste treatment center....
And I know Japan has almost the same situation.

It's amazing how countries look at waste issues differently, how individual countries create incentives for recycling and others fail completely. However, I doubt that a bottle deposit is necessary for people to recycle their plastic bottles: in Switzerland, we do not pay for a bottle deposit, neither on plastic nor on glass bottles, and yet we have a recycling rate of 82% for plastic bottles. For glass, it should be similar high. The reason for this is probably that everywhere - at railway and bus stations, in shopping centers, offices, etc. - recycling containers are available. Alone the possibility of correct disposal combined with savings in chargeable house sweep are apparently sufficient as an incentive ...

This is genius @exyle you buy a big plastic bottle and you pay a small extra fee, but then you can get this small fee returned if you take back the bottles, its insane more places aren't doing this, many of the countries close to the Netherlands I have heard are the leading forces behind a greener planet.
I saw those machines for the first time when I went to Germany. They shred plastic bottles and metal cans for 25 euro cents each. I used to save bags of these and take them to the local Pennys market for my refund. We do not have these machines here in my state of Pennsylvania (USA) we sure could use them.
I am not surprised at all, it's exactly the same here in Canada, a lot of people gain many benefits from returning their empty bottles to the store, you even see people going through rubbish cans to fish out those bottles so that they can trade them for money. It's big business here in my country, people travel for miles to find them, and it's not only the poor doing that! I guess some people even think of it as therapy.

That is awesome! Growing up in California we had a similar machine. It says on the plastic bottle how much it is worth, usually it was around 5 cents. Fond memories going around the neighborhood and collecting cans and bottles and newspapers to take to the recycling center, then of course collecting the money. haha my parents still do it even today.
Wow...Netherlands is very progressive when it comes to recycling and safeguarding the environment. In Kenya last year they banned plastic shopping bags and introduced biodegradable ones, but the plastic bottles are still a menace,maybe we can learn from you guys :)
We also have these deposits in the USA. For some odd reason they are .5 cents everywhere except the state of Michigan has .10 cents and I think there was once a Seinfeld episode about taking a car full of bottles from NYC (where they were .5) to Michigan.

We throw them away in Oklahoma as well. We don’t have such machines. A 2 liter of soda costs $1.50 average. I expect the retail costs are similar.
This model of plastic recycling is so cool. I am from India and we don't really have anything like that back home but seriously I never thought that if you pay for the plastic bottle then you would want the money back....
The idea must be old here but to my relatively new ears, it sounds pretty good :-)
We do this in Finland too, and probably other Nordic countries do this. Honestly I'm bit surprised that England, or any country at all, wouldn't use the pawn on plastic bottles. Totally wasteful to throw them away after single use.
I love this idea! I wish other countries would adopt this. Here they collect bottles once in a blue moon and most people make a trash pile and Burn them! Makes me ill every time I see (or smell) this!
Around me. There are recycling bins almost everywhere there are garbage bins. Most folks recycle all plastic and glass bottles (but we don't have to pay a deposit and/or get it back).
Maybe you have an idea for a crypto currency in London. For every bottle returned, you get $0.05 worth of a recycle crypto ...

I don't know about London but we recycle our plastic bottles in Brighton and Hove, along with cardboard, paper, foil, glass etc. There are bin on the Streets where we put it.
Also, if you go to the Municipal Dump you can recycle all sorts of other things as well. 😁
Definitely not bad, my friend, in your country very well thought up and recycling bottles is an advantageous thing. We do not have this in the country and you can get a whole bunch of plastic bottles, but then you just throw it at the dump. Thanks Mark
I really like that pro-enviromental culture, I've never lived in a country with that kind of culture and I think it talks a lot about how advanced that civilization is.
It’s exactly the same in NY. One small empty bottle is worth $0.05 sometimes $0.1. Usually we put once in a month whole bag of empty bottles in front of our house and there is always someone who picks it up and takes it to these recycle machines in return for 💵. I think it’s a great way for anyone to be able to make something extra.

We pay a bottle deposit as well. However, with all the tariffs China has stopped buying our recycling so it’s just piling up.
Do you have a lot of people that collect the bottles as a way to make money?

@exyle Really good way to avoid pollution and keep country clean. 22 bottles 5.50 euro if this offer comes in London we can make thousands every day just by collecting bottles and put into machines.

Whoa! You mean that in Netherlands even the empty and literally considered as useless bottles are also worth some money. Well that really is good enough for ya guys.
Such machines would be very useful in my country. I think very quickly all the garbage that has accumulated for years around has been removed. We have a beautiful nature around, but people who do not appreciate it, clog it.
We have a deposit in Michigan like over there. Ours is .10 which is about twice most other states that do it. I really wish they would get rid of it though. It is such a hassle to take bottles back. I would much rather throw them in with my recycling and forget about them.
