Ramblings from a retail guy.

in #life8 years ago (edited)

So, I have worked in the retail and hospitality trade most of my life and I have to say dealing the the public sucks.

At the moment I work in a small hotel restaurant and tonight was just one of many fun nights.

we we almost fully booked but allowing what we could in and along came a couple that I had a feeling we should have said we were full to. After offering then a table they sat down and not only ready to order drink but food as well before looking at the menu..

lady says "can I have the duck please but I don't want the suce that comes with it I would like the sauce that the chef made me on Monday"....

I say " what sauce did you have on Monday as we have a diferent chef on tonight and he won't know what you had on Monday".

After a lot of guess work and a whisper from her to sack the chef I think we got there.

Then after checking on the table there was a complaint about the coliflower as it was biger tha mondays. wtf????

Next up was a complaint about the music as they were tired of hearing the the beatles. I was happy with the beatles as this was the first time in eight months the playlist had been changed.

Come to sweets gent has a trio of ice cream as is on the menu but she only wants two scoops.... complains at the till as her ice cream was the same amounnt as his, I have to explain that we have one button for ice cream and her choice to have only two scoops.

This is one of the simplest of nights I have had to deal with. After working in a shop for nine years I feel that if there wass a national service that made people work in the reatail trade the word would be a better place.

There would be a lot more people saying please and thank you and a lot more respect for those that serve you. Whether it's the people serving you petrol (gas) coffee, food or drink remember they are not just there to serve you they have a life to so respect them as you would your mother, father or partner and the world would be a better place.

Do you or have you worked in retail?

Let me know your best story in the comments.

Hilarious - though I know you probably don't agree, but just to console you - can you imagine how that couple must have such a miserable life?
They probably whinged to each other all the way home about how they had such a terrible night and got stung for a scoop of ice cream.
There's always a few of them out there. Forget them and their miserable way. Tomorrow you'll meet mostly nice people and - hey - maybe you'll get a few kind words and a big tip.

He was was really nice so felt sorry for him that he had to go home with her. He even said next time you will have to have three scoops to which she replied no I won't lol always get the good one but sometime the bad ones outweight them especially when I ran the shop... Nightmare

I guess he won't be getting any tonight - and it's all your fault. lol

That put a smile on my face, if not his :-)

I worked in retail for the last 40 years until Feb. Of this year. I couldn't take it anymore. Recently people have become ANGRY AND TOO HARD TO DEAL WITH!

I totally agree with you on that. I have done it for the last 25 years and people are just getting worse, it's a diffenert generation, a generation that expects things rather than one that is thankful for what they have. Everyone expects things to be handed them on a plate rather than working for thing or even saying please and thank you for the things they do get.

I agree. I also think that with all of the info available on the internet, people are realizing that they are getting screwed by a very small number of very rich people. Information overload, if you will. I think that's why the "elite" will impose censorship on the internet, which I am not a fan of, but it may actually be better for the masses. We'll see......

Been working in retail going on thirteen years now. I've certainly had my share of annoying , rude, or downright bizarre customers, but the lion's share are nice, patient, and understanding. I've come to the point where I mostly see the bad ones as not being worth my time or energy to be mad at for very long.

Very true, I don't stay mad at them for long I rather feel sorry for them if they live their whole life like that it must be pretty sad.

Nice post. Thanks for sharing this bud.
