Lunch!

I met up with an old friend for lunch. We have known each other for more years than I care to count and typically catch up once a year, usually just before summer.

Something was different this year. Last year when we met I wasn't on Steemit.

So we sat down. Looked at each other over a coffee. We both grinned like the royster doysters we had been in yesteryear. I am sure the same escapades that were running through my head were running through his. The time we drunkenly attempted to ride a trolley down the steepest hill in town (didn't go well) Or when we had a contest to eat the most chillis blended in milk (didn't go well). Ah the good times!

So whatcha been up to? My old matey chops beamed. No doubt expecting a tale where I drunkenly attempted to milk a cow.

Eh, phew. Not much, or rather millions. Erm, aye. Lots of stuff actually, I joined this site, it's amazing!

Aw aye, Ye buying a bride! - He was rather pleased at that one.

We both laughed. I leaned forward.

It's better than that actually, It's a blogging site, you literally get paid to blog.

Do ye fuck! He guffawed.

It does, depending on how many votes you get it...

Aye right. Naw it doesnae!

Seriously, it does. Depending on how many votes you get and from whom...

From whom, whom? WHOM? Who says WHOM? Are you the Queen noo?

Fucking hell, this was tough, I steered the conversation around to him. Fast forward ten minutes. I got the updates on his marriage and job. He was going for a new job as his old one was shit and his wife appeared to be doing his nut in (translation for the non scots. Being a little tiresome).

I had obviously piqued his interest though. It seemed like no time before he was asking me about this mad site that paid you money.

I decided to keep it simple and explain that everyones vote had weight and was worth cents, ranging from fractions to many. His eyes lit up.

So it's dollars they pay you in then?

Oh god thought I. Here we go. Yeeessss, sort of, its a cryptocurrency they pay you in.

A whit, a crypto whit?? Wait. Are you gettin humped? (Translation for the non scots - Dear fellow, is someone taking advantage of you?)

It's like Bitcoin. I sighed.

I have managed to convince a few folk to join Steemit and many more to consider it but some people will never join. Usually the kind of people who brandish an old Nokia phone at you with a screen the size of a stamp and loudly proclaim that it does everything they need and the battery lasts for 8 months.

Bitcoin? Are you wan o' they scammers noo? Dawg, whit kind of dodgy shit are you up tae!?

I smiled in defeat as I sipped the last of my coffee.

Aye, that's me. I'm a scammer who buys brides off the internet.

We laughed and then like any true Scotsmen talked about the rain and how it was doing our nut's in.

When I got back to work I made a resolution. Next time I would stick to tales of drunken derring do.

For bonus lols I took a photo of myself making a face and sent it to him because I know his old shitey phone can't receive MMS's and it does his nut in.

Sort:

I can't persuade any friends about what Steemit is. isn't it weird? they listen to me about who they should vote for, or about which books are good ones, but when you talk about a social media where you get money to write posts, nothing, their eyes turn incredulous :D

It was exactly like that. An alien notion which was instantly dismissed and it was assumed I was a fool for believing in such a thing!

maybe after a few more conversations his mind will open and he'll realize that you are part of a pioneering movement! Eventually he'll see something in the news that will help open his mind. The effects of crypto are soon going to reach that tipping point when it becomes more familiar to non-programmers and he'll get it then! It's really a miracle that I'm here on Steemit actually...I'm the least tech-savvy person and really resist learning more. The learning curve could easily have stopped me if I didn't have the support of a friend.

That is great when a friend can support you to getting on it! There are a few hurdles which can stop a newbie dead. I hope that with all of the new helpy type of posts it will be a little easier :O)

I live in hope that I can bring him into the fold!

A fool alright, a fool that gets PAIDDDDD

lol,

Didn't you show him your blog page with your buckets of crypto cash showing dude???

I could have done but he would have probably thought it was a lure to get him in!

I too, need an internet bride!

LOL

Preferably a Crypto Girl who likes Liberty!!!

She can borrow yer kilt matey!

Ahhhhhhhh yeah! (:

With the kilt I should surely be able to get a good discount lol!!

Hehe, I didn't even know people still joked about internet brides!

(:

It was pretty funny man, you really need to have a roadshow with all your talents you have, you are such a unique dood.

I found a photo of me, in Facebook memories, that kinda sorta makes me look like you!!!

I may share it in a post, I will let you know if that happens LOL

Oh man if you do you have to make sure I see it, multiple tags!!! I think we would both find it hilarious!!

It will be awesome!!!! I will show you, and with your talents, maybe you should put them side by side, in post of your own, I think it would honestly be really really funny.

You are talented online, we need to put that to use LOL

This whole spending a year at 71 rep is for the birds too, BTW

LOL

A Crypto girlfriend would be nice lol

Yes, it would be

LOL

Love this blog @meesterboom!! Absolutely hilarious :) I'm still getting used to the whole idea of this crypto currency myself but learning lots here!!

It's great that you can learn so much by reading the posts that prior put up. Steemit is great for drawing people into crypto!!

That made me chuckle. My grandad was a Scot so I mentally read that in his accent, thank you for bring back such a warm memory of him.

I have no idea how I will explain steem to my friends 🙃

I am so glad it bought back those memories!! I try to type the way it sounds! Its a great language to hear in the head!

As long as you come up with a different strategy to mine you will be laughing!

Ditto on the sidelong looks about this site. Think I got the skeebies or something. And more importantly, WHERE can I get one of those phones with the BIG, postage stamp screens, my Vintage Model 1910 'Flippe' just won't handle my new world of Steemit postage...

Hehe, that's what's needed, a big stamp of a screen!! The skeebies is definitely the word for it!!!

Very hard for people to get their head around. Perhaps an @meesterboom Steemit introductory stickman video is in order. Complete with brogue voice over!

I have thought loads about doing one with sounds!! I am still of the mind that it will come! Will just have to properly suss out how!

MMS...that's a word we don't see often anymore :)
ahh..the good ol' times of nokia 7210..my first MMS phone.

MMS! I see it whether I am forced to use texts to send a picture, e.g to my family. It always says converting to MMS probably the only reason it sticks on my head!!

This post has been ranked as least likely to "do your nuts in."

Lol!! We just can't have those nuts being done in!! Cheers mate!

It can be like talking to a brick wall. It's like it is too good to be believable and they are determined to dismiss it.

It is madness! There is that mentality that the internet is pretty much a scam or a place where you can buy things and that is that. The blockchain will change everything though. Just might take abit of time!

Tale! is it so.

Sounds like a straight forward conversation when it come to Bitcoin lol

It does tend to go like that with some of my older friends!

I bet all your comversations are much the same

Well that is true, I am a bit steemit daft and struggle not to talk about it lol

Yeah me too but when I talk about it it sounds daft maybe it's the way I'm saying it

It's not you it's the other people. It is just such an alien concept to them. They have been conditioned to believe that it is only for other people to earn that way. I have some hilarious friends who would do well here but they all think its not real. Well, apart from the few I have managed to get signed up!

I agree people think its some sort of scam, there loss really I can always say I tried :)

hahaha love it
always choose your arms wisely, chatter themes in this very case :D

Hehe, I will be more careful with the chatter themes in future!

Explaining steemit to people works fine until they ask "you get paid in cash?"

"I've gotta do what? That sounds like a scam."

Why converting digital money is so alien to people is beyond me.

Yeah, they think you have been sooked into a giant ponzi and will be coming round their house cap in hand for something in a month or two!

Too true. Normalcy bias is strong in sheep. Don't pull them out of their comfort zone.

Hehe, yes, that would never do!!

With some people it is like talking to a double brick wall. You have a better chance though to convince this wall to join Steemit than your friend. Just chitchat with him and have a laughter.

Thats my thinking! I almost got on to the subject of cryptotrading but he would probably have had me commited for imaginary crimes against myself!

Ahaha! There are just some friends like that haha I tried explaining STEEM to a couple of people and ended up with talking about how blockchain is comparable to a person posing nude. I think it's only when you show them real hard cash when they convinced that it's not a scam. Heck, even just this story has already netted you a cool $180!! :O

I imagine that if I were there physically, I would think that you are two are having an argument when in reality it's just to pals catching up haha!

You probably would think we were arguing. Then again that's how most scots look when they are having a conversation lol!!

Yeah the money showing isn't a help that makes it seem less real!!! Or worse gives false expectations!

Haha! I guess you're right. There's this thing here where multi-level marketers snap a pic of themselves fanning with a fistful of paper moolah. They think it's cool, and it'll provide them tons of interest, but really though that's a universal red flag to steer clear since it's most likely a scam haha!

its a bit of a chore explaining it to non-believers, but you seem to take the same approach as me, explain, see if they are interested. If not, walk away still friends, and test the waters again in 3-6 months.
Good story.

Yeah it's the best way eh! Break the ice with it then move on and don't be a bore!

OMG @meesterboom! I look forward to reading your posts. You have such a great way of expressing yourself and makes it so interesting! To certain people its hard to sell the idea of steemit. At least you tried which is what counts! Maybe he will research it at home to see if you were right! ;)

I think he will ask me more, he was intrigued I am sure of it and thank you very much!

@meesterboom, I don't know if I follow your post too well. I am a bit new to STEEM and this system. But I am wondering if you might explain a little in your posts and tone it down a notch?

I come from a generation where not everything is blogged that is possible to blog. Only because I was busy blogging (in 1997) before the word existed.

I come from a place where content is treasured so much that PEOPLE TURNED OFF PICTURES JUST TO SURF THE WEB without the fluff.

And back in the old days, we bragged more about Features unheard of in contemporary websites, fake mascots, and bandwidth hogs than we did about making money.

But that's okay, I am only on my Post #2. Check it out, and, oh, interesting lunch you had there. It's hard to explain this, huh?

Keep steeming!

You beat me by about ten years for the blogging however I do remember well the times when you had to switch off images as good old dial up wasn't exactly the best for that kind of thing.

It is hard to explain but with the right audience who are willing to listen not too bad :0)

I will have a look

My ancient blogging... which will be discussed in part 5, then, is going to be a riot! While I don't claim to be the first ever blogger by any means, I think when this post comes out, the nostalgia factor will kick in. It will be relevant to lots of Steemians. Part 5 of my Introduction is not complete like 3 and 4 pretty much are, but I have a feeling that my ancient history of blogging will be oddly refreshing to those who do it today. It's like a network engineer coming across Bob Metcalf's notes on building the first hub.

Please stay tuned for Part 5, but seeing that you are also an old-timer, you're gonna like part 3 (search engines) and 4 (banner ads). Web 1.0 stuff has so many relevencies to today's STEEM, it's really uncanny. I can't stop seeing the parallels. I don't know Tim Berners-Lee, but I sort of wonder what that little gleam in his eye was all about! Maybe I'll start a petition to the Trump administration for a Berners-Lee day! Or a Satoshi Day!! LOL.

Thanks a million for checking out my silly Intro posts. Keep watching them! It means a lot, from one old timer to another. Peace.

Peace indeed!! I am looking forward to seeing more. There are definite parallels that can be drawn. People will be amazed by the stuff you detail. I know that lots of people now just can't imagine the internet of yesteryear!

these Scots-isms had me laughing aloud, thanks for the entertaining post! I confess to have hit the same walls when trying to share steemit, but after I mention crypto I am usually quick to tell about the money that I've made which helps for some.

I usually do the same but I was resiliently headed off at the pass at every turn! Grrr! Cheers for liking the Scot-isms!! :OD

I need to get to scotland just for the sound of it!

It's well worth it for the patter as they say!! :O)

I've had conversations like this a million times. I guess we are the 1%. For better or worse.

Do you mean we are the champions!!!! :0D

Well yeah duh. Can I be the best man at your mail order bride marriage?

But of course!! Did you know that the best man has to stump up the postage!!!

Man I hope you ordered from Wales.

Hahaha!! Wales!! Nightmare!

Haha i thought you'd like that.

You cant lead your friends in bloging if they not interested and dont like the idea about crypto,
But the idea about of telling about steemit on how you earn and enjoy the fun, just sharing has a great affect..

It absolutely does. He will get the message, just not today!! ;0)

Hahahaha, In my country am usually careful about telling people about steemit, considering the fact that dealing with crypto's and all could be complex and you trying to give them a detailed analysis of what's it all about, the next thing that strikes their mind is that you have been on to some fraud shit....I hope most of them understand what they have been missing out before it's too late...thanks for sharing mate :)

Oh man, exactly like that. Distrust seems to come first when it comes to the internet! Always a pleasure to share and thanks for stopping by! :0)
