A night at the circus and answers to the June HPUD Guessing Contest

in #teamuk11 months ago

I can't remember if I've ever been to a circus before, if I have I was probably very young when my parents took me, but I have no recollection of it at all. A few weeks ago, a circus came to town, and I thought that would be a great opportunity to go and see it. There was already quite a long queue outside when I arrived.

By the time we entered, it was already quite full, but luckily we found some seats with a good view of the ring. I loved the lighting effects to keep the audience entertained before the show started.

One of the first performances was the tightrope walkers. I get jelly legs even walking across glass platforms inside tall buildings, so this is definitely something off my charts. One of the guys did a hop along the wire, then he stood on the chair which was balanced on the wire, and for the finale, the two guys carried the girl across with her standing on a pole rested on their shoulders. Absolutely crazy stuff!

The trapeze is another crazy act. The guy on the left is probably the strongest on the team, he is suspended on the bar and is responsible for throwing his team mates around, and I do mean literally throwing. Sometimes he grabbed them by their ankles so they were dangling upside down, and throw them out towards the bar in front. And sometimes he would do a big throw and the guy would land standing pretty near to the end of the safety mat. If he used too little strength the guy would probably land tummy on top of the bar, or if he used too much strength, then I'm sure the guy would be thrown out into the audience. Disaster either way.

Next on were this couple on their roller skates. They were spinning around on that small circular platform at very high speed. Every time the guy did different lifts of the girl whilst still spinning at very high speed, I felt my heart was about to leap out. I was so scared they would lose balance and the pair of them would shoot off the platform. Of course that never happened, but it was still a very hair raising performance.

My favourite act of the whole evening has got to be what I call the Hamster Ring - actually, I just googled it and its called the Wheel of Death. The two big rings are balanced on either side of a frame that spins around as the performers run around inside and outside the rings that also rotate. Initially the guys were inside the ring and they looked pretty chille, even sitting down as the frame spun around. Then both of them climbed outside and stood on top of the ring and kept running as the two pair of rings kept spinning. It was another crazy act because the pair of them had to make sure they were synchronised and in perfect balance so they don't speed up or down the rotation causing the other to fall off.

The finale of the evening is this motor cycle cage. If you look at the person sitting in front, you can tell the cage isn't that big. A motor cyclist first went inside and zoomed around it, revving his engine at high speed.

Then a second one went and everyone was clapping at cheering watching them chasing one another inside.

Just when everyone thought they had achieved the impossible, a third guy entered...

and then a fourth.... and finally a fifth. I forgot to take any photos when five of them were inside as I was so gobsmacked with the whole performance. It was truly an amazing way to round off a thrilling evening.

Overall, there were around 30 acts that evening, and everything went as smooth as ice cream. However, I noticed there were no animals acts, and no traditional clown with painted faces and clown outfits. There was one guy who was like a modern clown, wearing a funny outfit and running around in between performance setups, mingling with the audience and doing silly things keeping everyone especially the kids entertained. Maybe the animal rights movement has had something to do with this, or maybe it's just too much hassle to keep and train animals to perform, and on top of this maybe circuses have to be sensitive to those with coulrophobia. It's a new world!

JUNE HPUD GUESSING CONTEST

This month there were 34 entries to my HPUD Guessing Contest. There was a good range of answers ranging from 45cm to 74cm. Nearly all were on the lower side of the correct answer and no one guessed it correctly, so the prize goes to those who guessed the nearest.....

The correct answer is here

Congratulations ladies! You have both powered up this month so your total prize per person is 20 HBD!!!! I hope you will use the prize to treat yourself to something nice, or perhaps use it to grow your Hive account a little bit more. And as always, thanks to all 34 of you who entered my HPUD Guessing Contest this month. See you again in July!

Sort:

I missed this round so let me at least congratulate to the winners and express my pleasure and relief that circuses without animals are replacing the old ones that were based on animal abuse. Way to go!

Thanks, have a great weekend too!!!

Congratulations to the winners. My friend @jenthoughts congrat to you 🎉🎉🎉

Thank you so much @adedayoolumide

You're welcome 🤗

Congratulations to everyone, but more to the winners.

Tina and I, along with some friends a few years ago, maybe a little more went to a circus in Londons Hyde Park which was part of the winter wonderland show they have there in the winter. It was similar to this and blew our minds. Your post jogged my memory. It may have been the same troupe.

I've never been to Winter Wonderland before, I know they have fun fairs etc but didn't realise there was a circus as well. This particular circus is called Zyair, and they're doing tours all over England at the moment. Busy busy!

When I was still young, I remember watching a circus in our Barangay plaza but it is not as so thrilling as this one you have witnessed. We always wowed and make our heart jumped our stomach rolled upon seeing these people doing a circus. It seems so unsafe but this is their source of living.

When I saw my notifications having my name mentioned in your post and there followed mentioning me too, my heart bumps, asking what is it? Did I won? And wow! This is for real.

Thank you so much for your generosity mam @livinguktaiwan. I hope many more blessing will come to you. Congrats to us @nanixxx.

The circus performancers really do risk their lives so I take my hat off to them.

I'm glad you powered up and got the bonus, it's always nice to pay it out

Yes, we won 😂 and now I also want to go to the circus because those pictures of @livinguktaiwan are so good, so colourful, and fantasy. It's true that circus performers are very brave and self-sacrificing. I can't count how many years it's been since I've been to a circus tent.

Me too I was still young that time. Hopefully there will be chance to witness it again.

Thank you, I will now look for the Blue Tent Circus, which is the name of our circus. I hope they have shows somewhere in Havana.

Sooo long since I've been to a circus! That must have been quite the show, amazing the skills of some of those guys.

It was certainly a very entertaining evening, a lot better than sitting in front of the TV

Cool to see the circus 😎 thanks for sharing!

That’s rather wide. But very cool chairs.
Congratulations to the winners 🎉🎉

Thanks for dropping by Jackie, have a great weekend

You are welcome 👋🏻😊 thanks a lot. Enjoy yours!

Looks like the circus is still pretty much the same as the last time I went, many years ago when I was a kid. Same acts by the looks of it. Always a good time though.

I imagine it takes many years to train for an act, and these are tried and tested performances so gets repeated over the years. And the best thing is, people don't get bored of it!

Yeah that's a great point and I agree that it remains entertaining for sure

It must be circus season… there’s one I am going to, later this month ☺️

I remember going to the circus as a kid, when when tigers and elephants were the show stoppers.

The human kind also is fun and nail-biting 😁

That's nice!! Is it a local Malaysian circus? It will be interested to see what acts they have. Hope you have a great time

It's called the Swiss Dream Circus, so not local...
I have been to it once before the pandemic and it has similar acts like yours :D

Even if I make a good guess, it's not good enough. I didn't think it would be as wide as 70 cm. If I had a meter meter with me, I would have guessed this question more easily haha.

By the way, I've never been to a circus before, it looks really interesting. What they do is admirable, I couldn't do a tenth of that.

It's all about the fun 😊

The circus performancers are really incredible, and so brave, definitely not for the faint hearted

The last time I watch one was at Panyu, China.
Stunning performance.

Missed you this month ace. I tried to find a very big chair but it didn't quite stretch 108 cm 😉

Haha, i realised i missed only after i saw this post

Deleted. Double reply

Whoa! That arm rests for that chair were MUCH wider than I had thought it would be considering the seat itself is only 40cm. :)

The other seat without arm rest is 40cm, in this one the seat is a bit wider, and once you add the arm rest, you get 70cm.

But it's ok, it's the participation that counts, and engaging more with people. Thanks for entering!

and then a fourth.... and finally a fifth.

I was very impressed with this... wow 😵

It's was truly crazy with the five of them inside, the precision was incredible

And you're sure they're running in there. The circus plays a lot with illusion, maybe the ball has a mechanism to make the audience think they are running and they just stay inside calmly. Because can you imagine a crash in there? How would they practice that? I've been thinking a lot hahaha

You don't like clowns????
I think that circus has been to Wrexham, I took the grand kids a few years back and the motor cycle cage looks familiar....or maybe every circus has the same acts?

untitled.gif

I'm ok with clowns, not a big fan but don't have phobia 🤡

This one is doing their tour around the country, I see from their schedule they're all over the place

Probably end up here at some point no doubt

This is pretty awesome. I stopped going to the circus a long time ago because I took offense to the way many of the animals are treated in those environments. The fact that this one had no animal acts is really cool. I think that is smart of them. This looks like it was a really fun event!

I reckon the animals may have put a lot of people off circus on modern days, so removing them makes sense. Also, I imagine it costs an awful lot to maintain animals, imagine moving elephant and lions around !!

No doubt! I am sure there are some groups that treat them really nice, but there are likely many that don't. I'm a big advocate for respecting nature. I like this concept you shared here.

These people are the real champs, they risks their life to make us happy, They should be appreciated for the hard work they are doing.

Means I missed the contest. Well, I didn't know it but next time I will be alert.

I missed this one too. Been quite busy. More often out than in with just an occasional post every now and then. Nice to see you're doing fine. Keep safe and here's to looking forward to joining your next edition 🤞

First of all, congratulations to the winners, well done, girls! 👏

Circus- Your photos are spectacular, maybe it can make me want to go one day again. As I was in a circus when I was small...with my parents. I got so scared of the clown hahaha, I cried and screamed, I guess my parents were embarrassed haha. I remember my father carrying me in his hands, out of the circus :D

Later, I went with my friends, when I was around 16 or 17, though it didn't leave me a great impression.

There is one song I always like to hear, it's from the show Alegría, a show by Cirque du Soleil
