Recently I made a post in which I used an image personally took, one of my wife, Faith. The post was about an activity we loved doing together; It seemed relevant and as it was my picture I felt quite vindicated in using the image.
It was a few days later when it came to my attention my image was being used on someone else's post, as their main image. So, in effect, the image of my wife was promoting someone else's post. Hmm, was a problem for me.
I understand it happens, and that images on the interwebs is essentially public domain, however it didn't sit well with me.
I replied on that post asking the user to change it, which they did, but it seems someone else reported, it on my behalf, to @hivewatchers using this link. I'm not sure if that user has been put on the blacklist, however I know they have been warned about photo/image plagiarism, which is not tolerated.
The person in question apologised to me, I'll grant that, however their use of my image, without asking first, makes me feel disinclined to engage with them anymore. It doesn't mean I haven't, I've just kept it to a bare minimum. An opportunity lost for that user possibly.
I mentioned to them that photo or image plagiarism, and plagiarism/copy paste in general, is not acceptable and even told the person my own brother @tarazkp asks me before using one of my images, and vice versa. It's called common courtesy. Between us it has rarely happened of course and no one else has ever asked.
Putting the plagiarism aspect aside for a moment, I believe, no matter who you are and what relationship you have with a person, it is respectful and the decent thing to do to ask permission to use an image, in every circumstance. I believe, between friends and family, it is even more disrespectful to simply use the image without permission as it takes advantage of that relationship.
I have considered not placing images of myself and wife Faith on the blockchain; I have thousands of images I could use instead. Placing them there leaves them open for someone to plagiarise them or create a meme for everyone else's enjoyment, and that's the nature of the interwebs I guess...But cause and effect comes into play in life, and here, and whilst I suppose that momentary enjoyment can be enjoyed by the person stealing the image, what happens to the other, the person who had the image stolen? What happens to the relationship between those two people? Does it thrive, or die, or never get started in the first place.
So, I still load images of myself here, it is a social network after all, and I use it that way, however I don't appreciate having my images stolen, and will react accordingly I guess. Every time.
I believe that I am a fair man, treat people with respect and courtesy unless a situation calls for something different. I guess because of that I expect the same courtesy to extend towards me in return from others. But it doesn't, not always. I shouldn't be surprised I guess, people are assholes.
There is always someone willing to take liberties, to snatch what is not theirs for their own gain or amusement. Taking people's photos without asking is extremely disrespectful, anti-social and selfish. It happens all over the place of course, I'm a realist and know this to be true. But for me, it's much worse when such behaviour could be avoided with a little respect and courtesy. Call me what you will, however image theft is never ok, in any circumstances, be it a stranger or someone who simply takes liberties of a friendship.
Being on a blacklist isn't where a user probably wants to be; That little red number beside your name will have a negative affect to those who see it (everyone) and can be difficult to remove I'm told. I know some new users may not understand, however it is critical that the more experienced users jump on it if seen, leave a message and go back to check...Use @hivewatchers for their intended purpose. It will help create a better blockchain.
Here is the link to @hivewatchers again. You can use this to report someone who has stolen your images, or for copy/paste, plagiarism, cyber-security threats, comment-spam, identity theft, spam and other activities that are unwelcome here.
Courtesy and respect goes a long way. Use it. If you don't wish to, please don't engage with me. I do not think this is unreasonable.

"I believe, between friends and family, it is even more disrespectful to simply use the image without permission as it takes advantage of that relationship."
Drawing parallels here, but there are certain people I know who don't get this concept with using things that belong to you or others without asking. They get it if you do it back to them, though...
Yep, I agree...Be it a tool, a book, a DVD, doesn't matter...The respect rule applies between family and strangers. I'm a little gun-shy of lending my things out. I had one guy ask to borrow my Landcruiser to tow a boat once. This was last year. Not me tow the boat, him borrow my Landcruiser. You can imagine what I said.
It's no different with IP (intellectual property) on the internet although people think it's theirs for the taking. Frustrates me.
Picks jaw up off the ground. I can't imagine any circumstances where I'd feel it appropriate to ask someone if I could borrow their car, except maybe my parents if absolutely desperate and only because they've offered that anyway and because I'd also offer them.
I know right? I've been asked to help move things in the past, using my vehicles, and I'm ok with it mostly, depending on who is doing the asking of course. But lending someone the big dog? Hmm, how about no.
So they used your image on the same blockchain, that is really disrespectful. The only time I use peoples images without asking is when I am promoting their work. ( Like my latest post 😅). And they are never on the blockchai. And come to think of it, that doesn't make it right, but I do put the source and market their stuff on other socials.
Yezir we gotta look out for the new users indeed, that red question sign really isn't pleasant at all, people stay away from it like the plague.
Yes, it was done here, on a post which highlighted that particular users favourite posts as it turns out. That does not make it ok, nor is it ok to do on other platforms, not without permission. There are plenty of stock photo sites where one can find images.
If a person can come to my blog to steal an image they can send a message to ask. To not do so is underhanded and plain and simple image theft. I hate social media, so promoting my posts there without my knowledge doesn't make me happy. I do not see it as a good thing however in this case it was done here. I don't tolerate it. I understand that there may be some who disagree, and that's ok, they can. It won't change my mind.\
Thanks for your comment, I appreciate you getting involved.
The thing is, maybe they have been seeing others doing such posts and feel it is ok ( Like those best of the week posts). But glad you made how you felt, heard and understood. There is no going against your will for your content. Take it easy dude.
Oh snap, just remembered engage is here. First I have received it on Hive. Thanks!!
Well, that user certainly learned how I felt, and clearly someone else felt the same way as it wasn't me who reported them to hivewatchers. I keep an eye on that account now, and will report them if I need to. That's the thing about doing the wrong thing, there's no telling who is watching. Best just to do the right thing in the first place I think.
Sorry, I forgot to do this on my last comment...

ENGAGEtokens.Smiles... i apologize once more
Lol...You don't have to, or to expose yourself here like this which is why I didn't mention you by name. I had no intention of outing you any further, but it is a credit to you that you have taken ownership of your mistake. Forget about it now, I think you have learned a valuable lesson.
!ENGAGE 25
ENGAGEtokens. If you're going to post images of some other guy's wife; you should at least have the decency to take the photos yourself :P
Yea, I agree...And be happy to accept the consequences that may, indeed, not be pleasant.
A matter of courtesy is certainly important when there's so much information that flows these days, when everyone starts creating something. I think the very least would be to credit the creator of something if you're to source it. Just a neat link would do well enough, but consent would be better if one can get it.
I wouldn't have minded if the user simply posted the links fo the posts that he was trying to promote, but to use my image as his main indicated to me that he did not understand the implications, or did not care. In this case it was that he did not understand. He does now, and to his credit, has posted here on this post apologising once again, which he did not have to do.
An honest mistake then. Now, with apologies and forgiveness all around, hopefully a lesson has been learned here. If you're using something you don't own, then the courteous thing to do would be to at least credit the person who's created it :-)
I don't understand those people. I don't want to judge because I'm not in thw right position to do it. However, I don't like that kind of attitude. Why not posting your own image instead of taking someone's image.
I admire your patience of not being angry right away after knowing it.
keep safe man..
I think that sometimes it's done unintentionally and in those cases we can help that user learn what to do and what not to do, as I have done in this case. I was not impolite, firm, but not impolite. On the other hand there are many that do it intentionally and it is those people that need to be addressed.
Thanks for your comment. Be well.

ENGAGEtokens. So good you managed to solve this! It is unfair when people take advantage and try to promote themselves with the work of others. Image, content, creation etc. I would lose my trust in such a person, a bond once broken is hard to glue back together. As you said, it shows respect to ask someone for permission. I think most think about making money and they are ready to use anything and anyone to get them there.
I think it is sad because it shows they suffer from a terrible lack of imagination and creativity, therefore they need to use other people to get ahead. Use their ideas, their help, their creativity, their images, their content. Big no no
Many don't have the same values I guess, and think only of themselves. The world is full of those types of people. I think in the case of this person it was a lack of understanding. The user has actually now commented here on this post which I respect. He knows better now.
The others, those that do it intentionally, will receive whats coming to them, and I'll feel no remorse. I don't understand how a person could have so little in their life, their own head, that they feel the need to plagiarise. It's difficult for me to understand.
I think it is not even worth trying to understand. If it is an innocent mistake then it's cool, otherwise... No mercy
No mercy indeed. Lol.
Hahhahhaha awesome, exactly what I had in mind. Warriorrrrr🤘🤘Now I have in mind that scene with "This is Spartaaaaa". Aka "This is Hiveee no plagiarism" baaam in the hole with ya🕳️😂😂
It's a thing that I just don't understand. I see many great images every day, but never even had the inclination to ask, or to use the image of someone else here on Hive.
A few people have asked to use mine and I didn't mind, instead it was a nice feeling that others saw the value in my images and requested to use them for one post or another (I never checked).
Decency and courtesy are cousins and they belong to the family called Morals!
I know man, I don't get it. Like you, if someone asked I would probably oblige. Let's say you were writing an anti-gun post and wanted to use an image I could supply rater than a stock image, I would be happy to send it to you knowing you would credit it in the post...It's not difficult.
The young man who did it has actually commented on this post. I purposely didn't mention his name, or that he was a he, as I didn't want him to suffer, although he outed himself and I respect him owning his transgression. He made a mistake, and with someone else he may got away with it. I do not believe it was done vindictively or with malice...He even tagged me in the post which indicates he had no clue. So, I'm not interested in punishing him. However others...They will be. It detracts from the quality of the blockchain and that's not what I want to see.
Anyway, I'm ever vigilant, and I know there are many others doing the same thing so that we can keep the blockchain on the up. Plagiarism is never ok.
So great of you not to out him in the post my friend.
I read your post and it is indeed unsettling.
Her image can be used by others for nefarious deeds.
We receive appeals here at the charity with a picture such as your wive's.
"I is a sigly mom wit 3 childrens to ask for you to help us"
Now you don't have to be a brain surgeon to see where this "appeal" comes from.
We attended a meeting here recently where some unsettling security things were explained to us. Clear faces of especially women and children are used by syndicates to raise money, or for porn purposes.
The lesson? Always look at the author! Why are they using such pictures?
I am not saying that your guy here is one of them, as he had the decency to apologize, but any stranger can now filch that picture from his page and use it for their own purposes.
So, a new law is being written here for charities. No clear faces of women and children and I like it!
Yes, the clear face image is an issue. There is someone here who likes to take them and make meme's and I'm sure they get many seconds of enjoyment from it, but it's not really something I'd expect to have happen between people who are supposed to respect others. Your examples are even more concerning. This is why mostly I have glasses on when I put images on. Usually have them on in photos anyway to be honest.
For some reason the word sigly makes me laugh. Lol.
I think sigly could raise a knowing smile anywhere :)
We swim in an ocean with many sharks and have to be careful in all that we do here. Luckily my old face is so wrinkled that it will take a ton of ink to remove the desert tracks, so I don't have to worry much.
Maybe you have so good pictures that people feel inclined to use them.
It quite wrong that they use them without your permission and I feel you did the right thing.
I think it's common courtesy to not use anyone else pictures without their permission but a lot of people here, in order to produce content forget all courtesies and maybe that's why plagiarism is so common here.
Anyways, keeping bad things aside, you click really good pics.
It is a bummer this happens a lot on the inter-webs. It is hard to catch, and almost impossible to stop. But, preventing some is better than none.
Yep, it's an issue...People taking liberties. Happens here, across the interwebs and in the real world.
They're actually not unless they're marked as such. If it's not specifically marked as public domain (CC0 or kopimi which I don't think is officially recognised but some people use it) or older than 70 years (from memory copyrights expire something like 50-70 years after the author's death) or a lenient CC (CC-BY is the loosest one, though depending on what's being done going up to NC might be possible) then the assumption should be that it's fully copyrighted in which case DO NOT FREAKING TOUCH IT (looking is fine though, everyone likes their work being looked at).
So if you had the resources and could be bothered you could totally bitchslap them with the law.
Also on a pure technicality last I checked you're not even supposed to reshare things that are under full copyright because that gives the copyright holder exclusive distribution rights as well which may have why CC was invented because normal people like us don't mind/want to let people reshare our stuff.
I think the only time it's been generally acceptable without permission is when doing feature/curation posts or possibly analysis type posts (though I haven't seen any of those, but in fairness I don't go looking either, have seen and done a few of the former on dA always without asking and usually gotten along the lines of "thanks for the feature!" from the artists I was writing about). But like with everything else depends on who you are and what you're doing I guess :)
Law-bitch-slapping sounds fun, but not as fun as pistol-whipping for the same transgression.
One of those gets you in slightly less trouble XD
That is a good point, although the trouble doesn't negate the initial fun.
Look long like with crypto ;D
