If you have used upvotebank, your posting authority is being abused

If you have used upvotebank at any point in the past, your posting authority is being abused.

It came to my attention when a user I have been flagging came to my discord and asked me to stop flagging his account.

After a bit of some back and forth, he says others are upvoting them and that it is not freedom.

image.png

In the end, I didn't agree to stop downvoting him as his posts are automated reports of token prices which everyone who cares knows where to find the prices. I also saw fishy voting patterns on the account as well as other accounts he owns.

After some research, I can see he is behind the account upvotebank which acts as a vote bot sort of service. He uses these accounts to upvote his posts to over 500 votes.

Shortly after our discussion, I had 488 flags on my most recent post within 5 minutes. Looking through them I can see they have posting authority to upvotebank.

Not only does he abuse his service to vote on his posts, but he also uses it to retaliate.

Ironically, the 488 flags added up to around 10 cents so I suspect it is a lot of old accounts that are no longer used. I scanned all the accounts and none of them have any current rewards.

You can find the full list of accounts below, I will tag everyone who is on the list. I recommend removing posting authority to upvotebank immediately if you plan on using your account.

You can revoke authority using this link:

Why you should vote me as witness

Sort:

The list of accounts have been added to the Spaminator bot as a warning system as we cannot differentiate between accounts registered/owned by the scammer, abandoned accounts, and active accounts. If you are a legitimate account, reply and tag me that you have REMOVED AUTHORITY and recovered. I will take you off the list.

Misusing people's accounts who have trusted a 'service' is inexcusable and causes the loss of trust in our Hive dapp ecosystem. It is a bigger problem than a few downvotes. Please act quickly.

My experience:
I used votebots and all on my posts on my previous account, then I realised I'm doing wrong and not helping myself or the community as a whole in the long run. Votebots just make the rich richer, while the poor people (from network perspective, new people having less hive) does not get benefited at all. means many good content dont get the amount/upvotes they deserve.
I stopped using that account, and started all from scratch here. I pledged that I'll not use any upvote bots or something similar (I may use some promotion tools later on , to get a wider reach, but thats different)
I think we should all team up to make this place more fair and a level laying ground for everyone :)
I feel its weird to curate posts automatically with a bot,
also I saw many shitposts getting some hundreds of dollars just because they use votebots/got support from few whales.
Just my 2 cents. I appreciate this article, upvoted this as well! :)
If I ever have significant hive tokens by posting articles/stuff, I'd rather give away a few tokens to some new and deserving accounts who may not be able to afford basic stuff. or who are working hard.

Sad.

I don't think I have subscribed to any. Only learned recently on how to follow a trail as we were operating Hive India.

As much as I hate to share this, I never understood how these bots operate. I do know this: when they vote my Hive posts, in hundreds, I don't get future votes (because real curators wouldn't vote).

Not sure how to stop this. Or what needs to be done. Appears voting is both a blessing and a disguise.

@sidwrites Yeah, I feel this too. I am wondering how this happens? Why won't real curators vote on one's post even though we are not doing this! It's very frustrating for sure and I don't really understand how I got mixed up in this 😫

What can we do?

Your recent post has epic 380+ votes...

Sometimes over 500+...

How do you feel?

@sidwrites exactly. I have no idea where this came from? I have no idea what is happening on my post sometimes. I just want people who truly like my content to upvote. I don't write for upvotes. I write because its an outlet that serves me. I love to write. I will not stop. I write here everyday. And I LOVE HIVE. Yet, my upvotes feel like a circus? And I am not sure where they are coming from. I saw this and it began to make a bit more sense? I never signed up for any of this though.

Haha! Love the energy in your paragraphs. I love to write too. And I come here to write. Autoupvotes are the trust people show in you. In your content. And they are more than happy to vote without reading. Plus, if they vote first, they earn curation rewards. And "other" people follow the main account who votes you (trailing)... that is why you are receiving bulk votes. It multiplies. Adds up. And comes in hundreds.

So let your content do its thing. Let it breathe. And shine. Rest shouldn't matter.

Oh! so this is normal, this isn't an upvotebank or something that this whale was posting about? Makes me feel better. Regardless, I'll keep writing :)

I don't know the reference but yes... they see good content and they want it. And they vote it. Initially, they do it manually. And then automate it. Like a fish in the ocean, they want you to swim.

Did you see what is happening to users who are moving over the SBI's to Hive. I exchanged mine last week after seeing a comment that it was something we could do so made perfect sense and moved them over. This morning I have been downvoted and noticed heaps of accounts with the same issues now. This is abuse but in reverse if you get my drift. This goes against everything we are striving for.

Since you have earned most of your coins running a vote bot, @buildawhale , you may want to write yourself down ...

Worlds most, some may say, provably fabricated drama with a solution to build the illusion of trust? Could be. I'm sure we will see.

Don't snort the koolaid. Hey koolaid!
@themarkymark is into censorship. Making lists and not letting people police themselves. To hide truths is the only reason for censorship.

Screenshot from 2020-06-08 12:30:02.png

Would you trust a person that hides what they have said?

Screenshot from 2020-06-08 12:55:56.png

I wasn't the one who hid my 25,000+ posts and comments.

People need to stop subscribing to bs like this.

It's no different than @steemengineteam where they eventually use the authorities for their own purposes.

It's no different than @steemengineteam where they eventually use the authorities for their own purposes.

please provide details

Oh, okay. Those are the guys who pretended to be the actual steem-engine team, right?

Pretty sure that account (made in 2017) came before the Steem Engine we know.

Goes to show how creative branding has been around here.

But point being, never give out your keys and authorities to questionable characters. They will use those privileges later.

can you provide helpful link to revoke the authority ???

Updated post with a link to revoke.

Damn I was still subscribing to these services even after reporting these two accounts- minimalpris and upvotebank to hivewatchers. It seems that spaminator is currently utilizing theycallmedan's downvote power to clear the reward of those in their blacklist and it wasn't working correctly. Glad, you downvoted those automated posts.

They all look like numpty accounts to me!

Ironically, the 488 flags added up to around 10 cents

Made me laugh!

Yep, I agree! With those funny usernames it sounds more like a bunch of Alts instead of real peeps who need to revoke their posting authority. Hahaha

Well done @themarkymark, you are doing a great job against abusers.

Do you recommend to use the downvotecontrol.com tool? 🤠

Have a nice day!

It works well to follow accounts that do quality negative curation.

Thanks Marky!

That's a lot of accounts.

Dang!! People just can’t help themselves can they. “Oh ya... I can get a few pennies worth of Hive if I do this....”

Dang that is a grip of accounts, hopefully they are still somewhat active and revoke their authority.

Nice Work!!

A funny thought struck me (I am not signed up with anyone as I no longer want votes or anything else ), but say someone was using them in Steemit and their account was opened here with the same amount of money...delegations were also carried through, so, would the support of this account be carried through to Hive? Just asking in case some people need to check their accounts.

That must be a record for number of downvotes received in five minutes surely :0D
