"Kleine Stadt - große Kunst" - der Hotspot der phantastischen Visionen!
After my friends @gric and @thermoplastic invited to our next big exhibition here in Viechtach here and here, I thought it might be good to talk a little bit about my home town and the art we show here.
Nachdem meine Freunde @gric hier und @thermoplastic hier zu unserer nächsten großen Ausstellung eingeladen haben, dachte ich mir, es könnte nicht schaden mal ein wenig über meinen Heimatort und die Kunst die hier gezeigt wird zu erzählen.
Ten years ago, in 2007, our director of town marketing, tourism and culture, Mrs. Häuslmeier asked me if I had an idea for a long-term exhibition concept, that would enable us to set ourselves apart from other communities in the area and help us gain recognition beyond the region.
Since I had good contacts with artists and organizers all over the world who are active in the field of surrealism and fantastic art, we decided to focus on this genre in the future.
However, Viechtach is still a rather small town in the beautiful Bavarian Forest in the south of Germany and so it was not so easy to inspire well-known artists to exhibit here.
Eventually I managed to convince my colleague Michael Maschka and he agreed to exhibit if I would do so with him.
So that's how this story began with "Verborgene Welten" (Hidden Worlds)...
Vor gut zehn Jahren, 2007 fragte mich unsere Leiterin Stadtmarketing, Tourismus und Kultur, Frau Häuslmeier, ob ich eine Idee für ein langfristiges Ausstellungskonzept hätte, mit dem wir uns von anderen Gemeinden abheben und möglichst überregionale Anerkennung bekommen könnten.
Da ich über gute Kontakte zu Künstlern und Organisatoren auf der ganzen Welt, die im Bereich Surrealismus/phantastische Kunst tätig sind hatte, beschlossen wir, künftig einen besonderen Fokus auf dieses Genre zu richten.
Nun ist Viechtach allerdings doch ein eher kleines Städtchen im schönen Bayerischen Wald im Süden Deutschlands und so war es erst einmal gar nicht so leicht, namhafte Künstler dafür zu begeistern, hier auszustellen.
Schließlich gelang es mir meinen Kollegen Michael Maschka zu überzeugen, und er erklärte sich bereit auszustellen, wenn ich dies mit Ihm zusammen machen würde.
So begann also diese Geschichte damals mit "Verborgene Welten"...
The exhibition was very successful and well represented in the media. Our "experiment" had thus cleared the first hurdle and gave us the confidence to continue working in this direction.
In 2008 a happy coincidence helped us. In France, the group "Libellule" had formed around the artist Lukas Kandl and his wife Francoise. The American Kris Kuksi was a member at that time. In summer he gave a painting workshop in Viechtach and had also painted a picture for the current Libellule project. That's how Kandls came to Viechtach to pick it up. For me, this was a unique opportunity to make contact with the leaders of the group and, if possible, to arrange an exhibition.
We showed our beautiful exhibition rooms, but the Kandls left without any further comment.
Well, I figured we at least tried..
A few weeks later, Mrs. Häuslmeier called me with the news that Libellule wants to do an exhibition in Viechtach. At the same time, Kandls invited me to join the group. What a great surprise!
This is how the exhibition "Ange Exquis", in which @gric participated as well, was held in 2008.
I knew Peter Gric only from the internet until then and was quite excited to finally meet this great master in person....
Die Ausstellung war sehr erfolgreich und auch gut in den Medien präsent. Unser "Experiment" hatte also die erste Hürde genommen und gab uns die Zuversicht, in diese Richtung weiter zu arbeiten.
2008 half uns dann auch ein glücklicher Zufall. In Frankreich hatte sich die Gruppe "Libellule" um den Künstler Lukas Kandl und seine Frau Francoise gebildet. Der Amerikaner Kris Kuksi war zu jener Zeit Mitglied. Im Sommer war er für einen Malworkshop in Viechtach und hatte dabei auch ein Bild für das aktuelle Libellule Projekt fertig gemalt. So kamen Kandls nach Viechtach, um es hier abzuholen. Für mich die einmalige Gelegenheit, Kontakt zur Gruppe zu knüpfen und wenn möglich eine Ausstellung zu arrangieren.
Wir zeigten unsere schönen Ausstellungsräume, doch das Ehepaar Kandl reiste ohne größeren Kommentar wieder ab.
Nun gut, dachte ich mir, wir haben es zumindest versucht...
Ein paar Wochen später rief mich Frau Häuslmeier an, mit der Nachricht, dass Libellule eine Ausstellung in Viechtach machen möchte. Gleichzeitig luden mich Kandls ein, der Gruppe beizutreten. Was für eine großartige Überraschung!
So ergab sich also für 2008 die Ausstellung "Ange Exquis", bei der auch @gric beteiligt war. Ich kannte Ihn bis dahin nur per Internet und war ziemlich aufgeregt, diesen Meister nun tatsächlich persönlich kennen zu lernen...

Exhibiting in Viechtach quickly became quite attractive. Beautiful rooms, good PR and there are always artworks sold, with 80,000.- Euro being the most expensive so far. In 2009 we could already arrange an exhibition with originals by Prof. Ernst Fuchs!
I regularly shared my contacts with other European organizers with whom we then worked together. For example, the iPax2010 (international peace exhibition) with "Dali's Heirs and Friends". Or "Magical Dreams II" with Galeria Bator from Poland. Both with @gric among others.
In Viechtach auszustellen wurde daraufhin schnell recht attraktiv. Schöne Räume, gute PR und es wird immer etwas verkauft, mit 80.000,- Euro für das bislang wertvollste Bild. 2009 gelang es bereits eine Ausstellung mit Originalen von Prof. Ernst Fuchs zu arrangieren!
Ich stellte regelmäßig Kontakte zu anderen europäischen Veranstaltern her mit denen wir zusammenarbeiteten. So zum Beispiel die iPax2010 (internationale Friedensausstellung) mit "Dali's Erben und Friends". Oder "Magical Dreams II" mit Galeria Bator aus Polen. Beide u.a. mit @gric.

A personal highlight was "Austronauts". From the selection of the artists to the design of the invitation and advertising, it was "my show". There were also works by steemit colleagues @gric, @krasnec, @leoplaw and @thermoplastic (in alphabetical order)
It was really an exhibition with artists from Austria, but as there can be confusion between Austria and Australia, we managed to smuggle in Leo Plaw, who is really Australian. But he lives in Vienna after all ;-)
Ein persönliches Highlight war "Austronauten". Von der Auswahl der Künstler bis zur Gestaltung von Einladung und Werbung war es "meine Show". Zu sehen waren auch Werke der steemit Kollegen @gric, @krasnec, @leoplaw and @thermoplastic (in alphabetischer Reihenfolge)
Eigentlich war es eine Ausstellung mit Künstlern aus Österreich, aber da es zwischen Austria und Australien schon mal zu Verwechslungen kommen kann, gelang es und Leo Plaw, der Australier ist hinein zu schmuggeln. Und schließlich lebt er ja auch in Wien ;-)

In the meantime, Libllule has become an integral part of our exhibition calendar with the "Biennial of Fantastic Art" in even years.
The most elaborate show so far has been the exhibition "Phantastische Venus", which I put together, featuring 70 female artists from 5 continents, like @bella-volen-art. It was a real challenge to select the artists, to invite them and to get the works to Germany. The planning and preparations took several months and there are some good stories left to tell...
Mittlerweile ist Libllule mit der "Biennale der Phantastischen Kunst" in geraden Jahren ein fester Bestandteil unseres Ausstellungskalenders.
Die bisher aufwändigste Show war die von mir zusammengestellte Ausstellung "Phantastische Venus", mit 70 Künstlerinnen von 5 Kontinenten, wie z.B. @bella-volen-art. Es war eine echte Herausforderung die Künstlerinnen auszuwählen, einzuladen und die Werke nach Deutschland zu bekommen. Die Planung und Vorbereitungen zogen sich über mehrere Monate und auch davon gäbe es einige gute Geschichten zu erzählen...

Of course there is still a lot left to tell about all the people who supported our projects, like our mayors Georg Bruckner and Franz Wittmann. And the diligent promoters @sigrid.nepelius, @leoplaw und @thermoplastic who presented us on their web portals and also helped with contacts.
But now, we'll have "Magical Dreams IV". Next to works by Peter Gric, Otto Rapp und Tim Rosen, there will also be two of my paintings.
Natürlich gäbe es noch viel zu erzählen, über die vielen Menschen die unsere Projekte unterstützt haben, wie unsere Bürgermeister Georg Bruckner und Franz Wittmann. Aber auch die fleißigen Promoter wie @sigrid.nepelius, @leoplaw und @thermoplastic die uns auf Ihren Portalen präsentierten und auch halfen Kontakte herzustellen.
Doch jetzt kommt erst einmal "Magical Dreams IV"
Neben Werken von Peter Gric, Otto Rapp und Tim Rosen, werden auch zwei Bilder von mir zu sehen sein.

Yes, Monica is incredible. She has true vision and the passion and skills to make a lot possible. Hope to see you back here some time soon. Since I know a bit about the plans to shift a bit more from "visionary" to "figurative", I'd say the odds aren't bad ;-) ....
Some of the other exhibition projects need to clone Monica. I just shrug these days when I see how some of these other things are "organised". Consequently I have in recent times been declining invitations to exhibit. I guess projects such as Viechtach have spoilt me. ;-)
I do intend to return at some point again, even if it is just as a visitor.
You are absolutely right Leo. Once you worked with Monika, it becomes hard to settle for anything less.
With the way you have grown as an artist, I definitely want you in one of our coming shows. And of course, you are always welcome as a visitor and a friend. I still owe you a pretzel and a beer ;-)

It is nice to see how you help in transforming your home town Viechtach into a artistic hub in your region and Germany. Your hard work truly transform your idea into a reality. Nice one
For me it is normal to do all I can to make a positive change to the place where I live. I am lucky, that those responsible in our town always have an open ear for my sometimes crazy ideas.
Interessanter Artikel. Wenn ich könnte, würde ich sehr gerne die Ausstellung besuchen aber von Bali aus, ist es aber ein bisschen weit. Arbeitest du auch mit CH Künstler zusammen? Sagt dir der Name Not Vital aus Sent was?

Sicher etwas weit, obwohl manche unserer Besucher mittlerweile tatsächlich oft über mehrere hundert KIlometer anreisen. Den Künstler kenne ich (allerdings nicht persönlich), aber er fällt nicht ganz in unsere "Richtung". Aus der Schweiz hatten wir schon Olivier Zappelli hier.

Olivier ist der Hammer und seine Bilder ziemlich bekannt. War ein tolles Erlebnis, ihn auf mehreren Ausstellungen hier und in Frankreich zu treffen.

trying to get many more VA artists to join us here on Steemit. On Facebook, it is like pulling hens teeth. What I do when I am aware of that they are on Steemit, I put a link on their VAG page. In this tread, there was talk of artists that either were, or could have been in the Venus exhibition, that's why I commented.
Oh, don't get me wrong Otto. I appreciate all you do, you are absolutely amazing in you never tired efforts to support everyone!
But we both know, artists are a funny crowd and if I don't pay attention, its going to be pandemonium around here in no time. What I said is more about setting potentially wrong signals and an example which others might follow.
I don't mind your occasional link, particularly embedded in markdown. We all network and share and upvote our friends and colleagues posts, but that doesn't mean we have to be in bed with everyone, as we say in Bavaria ;-)

Yes, for me too. Are you going to be anywhere near the Pigmalion art colony in June?
Well as i can see in map colony is held near Bela Palanka, and that's very far from Belgrade. Only if your trip will be organised like maybe you stay in Belgrade or Novi Sad for day or two, than it could be possible to organize something :)
The organizers are coming to the opening of "Magical Dreams" next week and I'll see, what they say. You should come too!

Es gibt sehr selten so großartige Künstler, die Handwerk, inovative ideen, perfekte Gestaltung besitzen, und noch dazu organisatorisch andere Künstler unterstützen. Hut ab.
Es braucht viele Rädchen, damit ein Getriebe funktioniert. Wenn ich eins davon sein kann, macht es mir viel Freude. Noch dazu dann, wenn ich dadurch großartige KünstlerInnen wie Dich kennen lernen darf :-)

Was die Ausstellungen in Viechtach betrifft, kann ich mich den Lobeshymnen der Kollegen in den Kommentaren nur anschließen. Ihr leistet wirklich super Arbeit und die Vernissagen sind bisher ohne Ausnahme jedesmal ein tolles Event gewesen, inkl. "Familientreffen" der Phantasten.
Was die Geschichte der Ausstellungen in Viechtach betrifft, ist dieser Beitrag sehr interesssant. Ich wusste bisher z.B. nicht, dass das alles mit einer Ausstellung von dir und Michael begonnen hat. Und wie sich der Kontakt zu Libellule ergeben hat ist auch witzig! Wenn ich die Chronologie so lese, erinnere ich mich mit Freude an die Ausstellungen, die ich miterlebt habe.
Leider kann ich kommendes Wochenende nicht dabei sein, wünsche euch allen aber einen tollen Abend und viel Erfolg!

It's wonderful to be able to do such things and you deserve it, I think what you're doing is great and being encouraged by your city is really great. I love the posters too, they are very beautiful. The two young women who are represented at the bottom are very beautiful, I am a fan.

Ah... was just wondering, great! I think it will be a great opening again. Kasia was here already with Roberto and they brought all the art. Karin will host the dinner commissioned by Monika. Artists meeting on Saturday at café Venus too!
