To me one of the greatest benefits of a decentralized network is the ability to take action without needing to ask anyone for permission.
You rather ask for consensus, and that can actually become even more challenging and exciting than simply letting to approve a plan by one higher-ranking authority.
Only by being in control of a set of private keys and by holding a certain stake of Steem tokens (resource credits), one does have a say - and can in theory make a difference here.

The Marketing Proposal for Steem I presented a couple of days ago on-chain was quite well received by the community (thank you!), which inspired me to keep going in the same direction.
Often we agree on the same path but then it still requires someone to take the very first step, to raise their hand and say I'll do it.
You need to get that famous ball rollin'.
That's why I kindly invite you to follow me today launching a Crowdsourced Marketing Campaign for Steem.

Let's promote Steem to the world in the way the community decides.
We're calling on all video creators and vloggers in this network to produce a (commercial) video ad that promotes Steem.
There are no rules except these:
- The video should be about 1 minute long: "60 seconds of Steem". *
- It needs to be published on DTube being tagged with #sixtyseconds .
- It can't contain third party elements, hence needs to be original.
- It needs to be submitted until February 7th 2019, 09:00 EST.
For additional reach make sure to upload your video on Youtube, too, and include the link in the description of your DTube post.
Hint: You may bear in mind that Steem has multiple target groups which can even overlap (content creators, crypto enthusiasts, developers, investors,...).
Again, there are no rules on how the ad should look like or what message it should transmit (full freedom of creativity) - yet, the wider the audience you may be able to address with your ad, the higher the chances to be approved by the community and win the contest.
On the 8th of February all entries will be listed in a post published in this account - @surfermarly - and then the voting process begins.
The voting will be stake-weighted and end after 7 days on the 15th of February.

The winning video ad should be spread by as many steemians as possible on the whole internet, aiming to create the largest media impact possible outside Steem's borders.

Much to my regret, I can't do videos. I don't even do cameras :) That will have to change, I think. However, I do social media. When this comes out, a vital part will be to make it "viral". That's when I'll jump in. I don't have to tell you this is a great initiative. What I can say is, I feel your energy and that's contagious.

That's brilliant, it's exactly what I've been saying to friends; Steem needs more marketing, we cannot rely on the idea that rich people will just buy it.
Funny enough, right now I'm finishing a small vLog as inspiration to others, showing how Steem is the best coin out there, capable of providing us a real life alternative for trading goods.
I plan to start a series to live only from Steem, that way inspiring people that this is a REAL alternative, especially for travellers.

Well the surfgods haven't been with me the last few weeks... Only gray skies with not that much wind/waves. There was only wind while I was out for the steem meetup in Rotterdam. But lucky me I had some sunny days (again with no winds and waves) but perfect for a run at the beach. The predictions do seem hopeful with some lighter winds for this weekend but just pretend I didn't see those because otherwise I'll be disappointed again with no winds 🤣

Yeah, I saw it (amazing work). I already dropped him the link to the challenge as comment under his post :-)
Just some thoughts, heavily influenced by the Grant Cardone 10x Rule. Instead of having one promotional date, maybe you should call for ten of them. Or, have five agreed upon share times in a single day for ten days straight.
Also, if you think five winning videos is enough, maybe you should share 50 good videos.
Lastly, I think a really powerful video would show users from all over the world saying the same thing in their native language. You have called for a single vision to drive this Blockchain, I think you have often stated it as We aim to be the best blockchain out there, or something like that.
It’s hard to reach consensus on such things, but using that example, the single phrase could be: I’m on Steemit, the best blockchain there is. Or any other thing.
I rounded up a lot of good ideas for Steemit slogans two years ago, but I don’t think any of them are really adequate. You have a big outreach, maybe you can round up some good one liner suggestions and get participants from around the world to send in one second clips of themselves saying the one liner of your choice.
Indirectly promoting the community here and showing how international it already is while promoting the blockchain in a number of languages would be so much bigger than having single language videos, imo.

Afterthought: Maybe promoting the app side of the blockchain would be better: My app of choice is on the Steem Blockchain, is yours?
Hey @boxcarblue! First of all thanks a lot for your detailed input, it’s much appreciated.
I haven’t read Cardone’s 10x Rule so far, but maybe you can elaborate a bit more on it here :)
Here’s why I proposed one d-day instead of several: we don’t have many active users in the community right now, so if you’re very lucky you may get a few hundreds posting the video ad in their social networks. That’s the experience from past activities on the platform. If we split that into several days, it’d probably have no impact.
Yet, this is an open community and everybody is totally free to use the offered pieces of content as they wish and do what they feel is best for Steem.
Same applies for the number of videos. It’d be great to have 50, but I guess we could be happy with 5 high quality ads. Yet, I’d be happiest if the community proved me wrong here :)
Last but not least, of course people are invited to team up. So if there’s a group of steemians who wants to do a video like the one you suggested (several people repeating the same slogan), then they’re kindly invited to share it with us.
As mentioned in the post: there are no actual requirements or rules - total freedom of creativity :) That’s honestly what I personally like best about Steem: it’s a huge playground, a big think tank with amazing talents swimming around. That to me is also the true value of Steem.

The 10x rule, simply put, has two parts. One, make 10 times the effort as your competitors. Two, make your goals and your vision 10 times as big. Don’t take average actions. Don’t settle for average dreams. Don’t compete, dominate.
How do you dominate? You do what your competitors won’t do, and you never underestimate how much time, effort, and funds it takes to be successful. How do you do that, you take your conservative predictions and multiply them by ten.
That’s the 10x rule in a nut shell.
It emphasizes quantity over quality, which I take issue with, but when you’re talking about sales, PR, and making new customers, I think that it’s correct. Steem has a lot of problems, but it’s still pretty unique. Hammer that message to the world all day everyday and maybe something will happen. The content and the messages don’t have to be perfect, but the volume has to be big enough.
What if some of these donors, rather than reward the content creator directly, put up some money to air the videos through Facebook ads (with the creators’ names attached to them)? That would probably better serve the creators and the platform.
I’ll be giving this more thought. I’ve never edited a video before, but maybe I can come up with something.

As I mentioned before, the campaign is sort of a test flight aiming to provide us with as many learnings, takeaways and ideas for future activities as possible. Funding some ads could be a great idea for the next action! Noted ;)
Another part of 10x thinking is that unforeseen events always happen. Here are two probable scenarios that I can foresee, I can’t imagine what the ones we can’t already foresee are, but I’m sure they’ll be big.
Say this leads to a really successful marketing campaign. One, there is still the issue of account creation. As far as I know, it still isn’t fixed. Yes, we can personally help people make accounts by paying for them, but who do people contact for such a service? Are people willing to spend their own Steem to provide that service? Can we attach credits to the winning videos that promote account creation services and contacts?
Two, this campaign is successful and interested people find the trending page. What will they do then? Can we finally deal with the trending page in a month?
Maybe two other questions to ask are how do we avoid these problems, and how can we turn them to our advantage? Any thoughts?
There’s a great initiative called @steemonboarding you may want to check out. One of my ideas was to somehow connect the two of them: the campaign and the onbaording site - e.g. including a link at the end of the promo ad or adding it when linking the ad on Twitter etc.
I agree that it’s important to provide people with a helping hand in the beginning and direct them towards their favorite communities.
Regarding the Trending Page: Steem is not Steemit. Why would we even focus on the latter? The campaign goal is to promote Steem, not Steemit. The landing page may be rather this one here: https://steem.com/

Hello @surfermarly, I do not know if you know some of my videos, I have a question, I want to participate but there is a detail, I do not know if it affects my native language is Spanish. I only speak that language, I have problems with pronunciation and memorization to speak English. So I would like to know if the creators of Spanish-language videos can also participate, and even if they are going to be evaluated in the same way, or will they be excluded for not speaking English? STEEM is a great project, and has not yet reached enough people and investors, I think there are people out there waiting for our message of invitation. All you need is a good message. I think that steem can change the life of any person of low resources as well as me, only with a lot of dedication.

Since the overall goal is to reach as many people as possible with the campaign, a video in English may be more suitable in that context. Yet, as mentioned in the post, there are actually no rules. Of course someone doing a video in Spanish wouldn’t be “excluded” from the contest (this is the Blockchain - no censorship at all ;-)), you just may not receive so many votes for it since 70% of the Steem community is English speaking.
What about adding some English subtitles? Could that be a good solution?

This really got my attention @sufermarly because some people don't really know what decentralization is all about such that they get scared to express their thoughts to avoid getting flagged by the superiors (whales). I wish most people can really understand this just like @good-kharma is also applying this statement which made him developed the esteem v2 App.
I can't wait to be part of this great contest since it will add more to the development of steem and I know it's gonna be fun 😊. This is also one of the best ways to promote Steemit and i hope it creates more awareness to the public by making them be part of the Steem blockchain.

TBH I'm really getting very great ideas for that 60 seconds but I'm bit confused to implement it in that 60 seconds. I will try my best to participate in it😊😊. Well let me tell you that being a video creator I should say that this is a Kind of contest in which the creators should participate in it😊 and should give their 100%.
Although I'm not giving anykind of guarantee mam that when it will come I got the bestest idea while reading it but it will take a bit time to implement it because I want to clear my vision more as I have only 60 seconds for it :)
