Hive Open Mic ( #openmic ) is a global community of music lovers, for music fans and musicians. Each week is a new invitation for expression and connection. We welcome all walks of life, all languages, and all musical genres. Every contributor can be proud of the fact we are building a live music movement, reaching an international audience.

At a time in human history when many are lonesome and fearful, it is vital that we rise and harmonize. Our community is real proof of universal harmony happening here and now as we gather together, building bridges of brotherhood and sisterhood. This connection crosses all distances, reaching around the world.

A Personal Introduction from the Host

I am @cabelindsay, a musician and a music fan. It is a real honor to celebrate live music through the Hive Open Mic community, hosting our weekly live music event. Here, we share a virtual stage, enjoying songs from many nations, in multiple languages. At the end of every week, I have the pleasure of presenting the highlights. How fun!

I appreciate the various ways this event stretches me as an artist and a listener. I enjoy making music, hearing unique songs, developing my creative potential, cultivating my gifts. I am grateful for the friendships that are developed here, cherishing these connections. I adore the fact that our community nurtures the creative spirit worldwide, right alongside GEMS, PowerHouseCreatives, Natural Medicine... and ours is uniquely entered around live music—a rarity in these days of social distancing.

A Global Community for Expression and Connection

Hive Open Mic serves two main audiences: musicians and music fans. Musicians include singer-songwriters along with instrumentalists and others who express themselves musically in various ways. All skill levels are invited, with amateurs and professionals having equal status. Music fans include avid listeners, art appreciators, and community leaders, along with casual witnesses. All are welcome here.

A Weekly Live Music Event

Every week is a new invitation for musicians and music fans to connect through live music. At the end of each week, outstanding entries are showcased in a highlights post, featuring one “Spotlight Artist.” Musicians receive upvotes individually, along with supportive comments. Tips are encouraged too. With or without the monetary incentives, the connection between an artist and an audience can be very rewarding.

How To Participate

Produce - Introduce your video with the words: “This is Hive Open Mic Week [1] and I am [@username],” substituting the current week and your username, performing a song.
Present - Post your video on Hive by presenting your song through YouTube (preferred) or another video host, tagging #openmic.
Promote - Share your link in the comments section of Sunday's open mic invitation in order to be included in our weekly highlights.
Prosper - Enjoy global harmony with the Hive community by engaging with musicians and music fans through upvotes and encouraging comments.

Why is there a weekly theme?

We introduce new themes every Sunday, encouraging us to share a common ground as a community. This is a pressure-free invitation, and musicians always have full freedom to bring whatever music feels inspired in the moment. Participants share the energy of the collective current, working together to build a momentous wave: a movement.

From the audience's standpoint, the weekly theme gives listeners a meaningful statement about the music as a whole, making it timely, relevant, and relatable. Listeners appreciate the fact that the artists who follow the theme are truly performing live in the moment, bringing fresh energy that is worthy of attention and applause.

For example, our “Song of the Sea” theme brought songs that were mystical and emotional. On another week, the “Fire Starter” theme brought songs of fire and fierce energy. These synchronized efforts deliver an energy that is cohesive and substantial. In this way, we offer a set of songs that connect us on a harmonious level, journeying together in the creative space.

What are the incentives for participating?

Hive Open Mic is not a contest, although it can be very rewarding. Musicians earn upvotes and supportive comments on their posts, helping to improve reputation scores and develop a fanbase. Musicians gain additional encouragement through our weekly highlights curation. Tipping is welcomed, of course.

Our event is inspired by Steemit Open Mic. The Steemit Open Mic event hosted 100+ episodes, celebrating 1000+ songs, reaching 10,000+ listeners. However, its success was largely dependent on its reward pool, it seems, which ultimately led to its end when the STEEM dollar value declined. By contrast, Hive Open Mic survives and thrives on its art—this is a music celebration.

Another outstanding incentive is the possibility of achieving personal gains. Musicians often show improvement over time, as we practice our presentation skills, finding our voice, refining our talents. Here, we learn to perform, present, promote, and prosper in various ways. There is infinite growth potential in this.

In the bigger picture, we're seeing signs of global harmony happening here, through our embrace of music from many nations, with multiple languages, touching hearts through the arts. Hive Open Mic is a worldwide movement fueled by passion, and this makes it a pure love offering. Everybody wins.
