Regularly a group of macaws visits my backyard and eats the fruits and leaves of the trees. These birds have become very common in Caracas (Venezuela). This is a quite interesting story. In the 80’s a group of these birds who where in cages, were liberated or escaped (depending the version). Along the years they reproduce in forests and parks around the city and their numbers have increased a lot, due to they do not have natural depredators. Every year we see more macaws flying and in the parks.

Regularmente visitan mi patio varias guacamayas, que se alimentan de los árboles. Estas aves, se han convertido muy comunes en Caracas últimamente. La historia de ello es muy interesante, en la década de los años ochenta, un grupo de aves número que estaban en cautiverio fueron soltadas (o se escaparon, hay diversas versiones). Y desde entonces se han reproducido en los parques y bosques que rodean la ciudad. Se nota que su número aumenta año tras año debido a falta de depredadores.

These birds are very striking and noisy. The most common variety in Caracas has blue and yellow feathers. The photos show a group (or family) of five birds, which are hidden on the tree branches.

Estas aves son muy llamativas, y ruidosas. La variedad que más abunda es la de plumaje azul y amarillo. Las fotos muestra una familia grupo de cinco pájaros, los cuales están escondidos entre las ramas de los árboles.

The photos were taken with the camera of a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra using the 10x lens, which gives an equivalent focal length of 230mm in the full frame format. In some images I lowered the saturation of the color channels different from blue and yellow, in order to highlight the birds from their surroundings.

Las fotos las tomé con la cámara de un Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra usando el lente de 10x, que da una distancia focal equivalente a 230 mm en el formato de sensores de 35mm. En algunas imágenes bajé la saturación de los canales diferentes al azul y amarillo, de manera tal a destacar los pájaros de su entorno.

This is very interesting how macaws became so many in your area. For us they are rather exotic.

It is only recently that they have become abundant.
Certainly for higher latitudes, it is an exotic bird.
