We can only try to protect ourselves from Cyclonic Thunderstorm

I have been to my native place since couple of days. A Cyclonic Thunderstorm has started since yesterday and this morning, it got more intense, and apparently, we felt, its going to damage some of our trees. Banana trees are most vulnerable to these thunderstorms as they start dancing in the wind, before falling to the ground. Though, there is little we can do, we still tried to repair as much as we can. This is a raw banana and it was almost ready. We usually cut in bunches and consume them, because they remain fresh in the tree. But this time, we decided to cut the tree itself and bring it and keep in our garden, so that, it still remains fresh for few days.

If you do not know, then each part of the banana tree is used as food. The bananas, the red flowery last part (first image), the stems - each of them are used in preparing different food items, and each of them have different taste. It's told, if you consume the banana stem curry, it will cure all stomach related issues, as it deep cleanses all the bad stuff from your stomach. A special skill is needed to cut them, but its a common practice in every household. These were considered poor man's food earlier, but now they are also sold in the market in high price. The only problem is that, recent generation do not know how to prepare them. I am a big fan of these local old dishes - so my wife knows how to prepare them 😀

I also took few leaves and then left the big leaves at a dump place where street cows come and eat. Banana leaves are considered sacred at our place and is used in all worship to keep everything. They are also used to eat - It works like a big tray where one can be served all the items. Especially, when we get food from the temple, its a pleasure to eat using the banana leaves. Now a days, its difficult to get them in cities - so people go for other plates. What used to be a tradition few decades back, is getting lost.

Down below, is a freshly coming ripen banana coming up. Since this is not at all usable, I prepared a support and gave it against the lean. Considering the weight is on the leaning side, it may help the tree from wind, but who knows. We can only prepare for the best but at the end, its the Nature which decides what to keep and what to wash away....

Thanks for this interesting lesson on bananas. When we lived on the Tenerife Island (Spain), our apartment was right next to a large banana plantation but they looked different than yours. Both the plants and the fruit. Must have been some other cultivar I guess. You could cut them green and they would turn yellow in a few days. Here are some photos:

I hope the storm will not cause any more damage to you, stay safe guys.

They are ripe bananas - the one that I gave a support (towards end of the post). The one you have posted is actually the best in taste. There are several varieties in each of them. The one I cut is the curry banana.

Right, there must be more varietes. In Mexico, we sometimes bought these miniature bananas too :)

Cute looking and super sweet. Bananas are awesome. Definitely one of my favorite fruits. Delicious and nutritious. I wish I could grow them in the garden like you but here in Central Europe where I come from, it´s not possible. Too cold here in the winter. But down there in Southern Europe, bananas are a very common crop :)

The problem with getting them from market is that, they use chemicals for ripen them. We usually procure them from the tree only after seeing one of them showing up as yellow. Then just hang inside a room and it goes on for 1-2 weeks. All natural. Unfortunately, we have very few choice and still buy from market when not have them at home.

Yeah. I don´t even want to think about what they do to the bananas that are transported here from distant locations like South America... Must be filled with chemicals :( The shorter the way from the tree to you, the better. Nothing compares to growing your own fruits and veggies... With love and care and without chemicals :)

hello dear friend @sanjeevm good day
The climate problem is wreaking havoc in much of the world; I'm very sorry that they are going through this in your city and the losses of arbolo
It is good to know that much of the banana tree is consumed, this information is unknown. Here in Argentina we only consume the fruit
I take this opportunity to wish you a great day

I will post about the stem, you should try out, Good day.

That would be great if you share your knowledge about it, you could do it in our Amazing Nature community.
Enjoy a beautiful day in the company of your loved ones

I have banana plantations at back of my house, it's always disastrous whenever the wind blows due to the fact that the tree itself isn't strong against fierce winds, look at that fresh coming banana, sad it couldn't mature. I guess the trees could have acted as a better support.

@tipu curate

Hopefully, the fresh coming one will be saved.

Exactly, hopefully they would.

Sir have you ever experienced Hail Storm like this in your area?

I have heard that in tropical areas it is very rare to see hail Storm, although it rains a lot.

Yes, they are called super cyclones - the one in 1999 was the most dreaded, lakhs of people died, wind speed was somewhere between 200 - 300 km. Last year a smaller one came. Now a days, the govt has good preparedness, they evacuate lakhs of people.

that sounds really scary sir, it's good to know that govt is prepared to tackle if such problems occurs again.

If you do not know, then each part of the banana tree is used as food.

As a Sri Lankan, we never removed any parts of banana tree. Especially my family members really like to eat banana stem curry. It's so delicious and most nutritious. However in this thunderstrom period be safe since home. So many natural disasters happening via stroms.

Its part of every rural home in India - no work is needed, they just grow on their own.

Those bananas will now be eaten at the time they weren't desired to. It's sadden how natural disasters could cause discomfort and uncertainty. Well, they are inevitable and the only remedy is to apply control measures you guys did.
I never knew that the red flowery banana part can also be used as food! Now I know.

Seems the weather is causing lot of problem....and it's bad to see uprooted banana plants....I tried mostly the flower dishes and it was delicious....

My mom prepares a special dish from the flowers - put all spice, mustard oil and the processed flowers in a big leaf and then burn in low fire left out in the chullah - nothing can match that.

I know, they are kind old delicies ...hard to find now......Have u ever tried fresh bamboos? Kind of a tribal food in my area...

Not yet, any recipe ?

The tribal people make few and it smells like Mutton...I tried pakoras of it and it's taste delicious..the fresh bamboos are fresh and soft so can easily be grated or messed.

I didn't know everything on the banana was useful. I love to eat bananas, it's one of my favorite fruits. It's a shame when old ways are lost and the younger generations don't bother to keep up. I have some very favorite old recipes from ancestors that I hope to teach my granddaughter to make when she gets older. Good luck on keeping your banana trees safe in the storm, and you and your family as well.

If you do not know, then each part of the banana tree is used as food.

I did not knew this. I am from Hungary, and we cannot grow bananas in this country, because the local climate is very cold for it. The temperatures in the winter months are often below -10 °C (14 °F). Sometimes it is -20 ° C (-4 °F ) or even lower. We have to import bananas from other countries.

OK so I am a bit ashamed to admit it, but I don't think I would have recognized it as a banana flower!

Sorry to hear about the storm, we also have storm that were supposed to hit yesterday, but never came. That's the unpredictable aspect of nature (and life).

I wish people can return to their roots more often, using banana leaves again as plates, I am sure you can also cook with them by wrapping the food and put it on the hot charcoal?

Cheers!

I am sure you can also cook with them by wrapping the food and put it on the hot charcoal?

That is what we do, we use banana leaves for preparing traditional grilled items in slow fire that is left at the end of burning of woods. In good old days, we had chullahs , we still have one and being used ( I posted about it in one other post where Mom loves cooking in that, and the food is pretty tasty).

After the banana tree was harvested, the tree fell in the storm. We also had a banana tree in our house and it broke along the middle shortly after the harvest. Of course then we stuck the tree a bit with bamboo. However, this banana tree is also supported by another tree.

Yes, banana trees are very important to protect in big storms. Although we don't have very many big storms that knock down our bananas, we do have some bananas that just fall over with a big load of bananas; a big thunder storm would take no time to knock some bananas down. I enjoyed reading your post!

I like banana orchards and the fruits that ripen on the plants are very tasty. The plants are very affected by the storm. You have done a very good photography.

You are right that the whole banana tree and other big trees are badly damaged by storms

Very good and informative post again from your side sir and this is one of the plant which is very useful for all the people about to about each and every part of this plant is used @sanjeevm

banana heart that is versatile and useful
