Landscape Photography: admiring the Czech Grand Caynon

in Liketu10 months ago (edited)

Hey there my Hive friends and followers!

It has been extremely hot here in the Czech Republic lately (it was 38 C yesterday!) so going out is not an option for me these days but on the other hand, it gives me some extra time to work on my posts and I´m happy to roll out one for you today :)

A couple of days ago, when the weather was still quite bearable, we went for a day trip to the famous Karlstejn Castle, which is just a short train ride from Prague. The castle is really beautiful and you can definitely expect a post about it here on my blog soon but this time, we will take a look at another famous landmark of that area and that´s a stunning natural site often referred to as the Czech Grand Caynon.

There are several flooded limestone quarries located within a range of just a few kilometers from the castle so when visiting Karlstejn, many people go hiking to the quarries as well. Since my fiancee is pregnant, we didn´t want to get exhausted too much and thus went for just one of the quarries - the biggest one that´s called "Velka Amerika" in Czech, which would translate as "Big America" in English.

The quarry is really huge - it´s almost 800 m long, 200 m wide and up to 100 m deep. The quarry got abandoned and flooded in the 1960s and it has been attracting all kinds adventurers since then. Hikers, tramps, climbers, divers, swimmers, speleologists and other outdoor enthusiasts were exploring the quarry for decades but unfortunately, not all of them were careful and responsible enough. Over the years, the quarry has claimed many casualties (mostly drownings and deadly falls) so eventually, the local authorities had to close it down for the public. These days, you can only admire the beauty of this fascinating place from the fenced paths and barred viewpoints located on the edges of the crater.

That´s exactly what we did and here are some pictures that I took up there :)

I hope you enjoyed those images. The Velka Amerika Quarry is a really nice place but it´s important to respect the treacherous nature of it. I mean there are now fences and iron bars all around the edges but there is nobody to watch and supervise the visitors to make sure they don´t climb over the safety barriers. So if you visit the quarry, please be responsible and stay only where it´s allowed. Thank you.

To find out the exact location of the Velka Amerika Quarry, feel free to check out the Pinmapple, I pinned it there ;)

Hola amigo! Around here it is also terribly hot! Paweł was suffering here today with 32 degrees and feeling 35, now I don't want to imagine with 38 degrees is that it occurred to us to go out for a little walk or well I encouraged him to go out haha! By the way, yesterday we were in your country, we went to Cieszyn but walked a while to the Czech Republic, yes too hot there yesterday too. We remembered you :) we went to a supermarket to buy water and the translator couldn't translate well still water hahaha, finally we found: neperlivá. Greetings!

By the way, the Czech Grand Canyon looks amazing!

IMG_20230716_204734_711.jpg

Hola amiga! It´s hot, I know :) You remember? I told you the heat here is different than the heat in tropical countries. Here it´s very dry and it´s difficult to breath. When I lived in Mexico, the real feel temperature was often around 40 C but it was humid, there was a nice sea breeze and most of the apartments have pools :D Here, it´s very different. When it´s hotter than 35 C here, I better stay in the apartment and just wait until it´s not so hot :D

You were in my country! Yay! :) Yesss, we have "perlivá" and "neperlivá" voda :D I know that "perlivá" is "gazowana" in Polish :D Těšín (Cieszyn) is in the same region that I come from so when we move from Prague back to my hometown (Opava), we will be really close to you guys :) Cannot wait!

Yes, you were right my friend! The Poles yesterday on the street looked stressed (including Paweł) hahaha. Luckily, the temperature dropped today. And yes, we were walking in Czechia a bit and relaxed for a while at two small lakes near the border that on the map have no picture or name, but later you'll see the pictures around here.

Hahaha yes, we were looking for the water "niegazowana" finally we found it there as neperlivá.

Opava looks very nice! And it's true, it's closer. I can't wait! 🤗

Awesome :) Looking forward to your post from Cieszyn! :)

Holly molly! Believe me or not, but yesterday I got a post on my feed from a Facebook 'friend' (which I don't even know) who posted a picture from the same canyon and was wondering about it but didn't dare to ask him for details since we spoke before.

So considering that I ran now into your post, can you please share details about this canyon please? :D For example if the trail is marked and safe to follow with friends that are not into mountain hikes, as well if we can reach it only with a train ride since we won't have a car to move from one point to another?

I'm really super amazed by the beauty Czehia has to offer so will definitely turn into a pain to create our travel plan and what to visit each day during our stay because I am afraid I will miss some of the most beautiful places out there haha :)

Hey Gabriela! Actually, if you didn´t stop by, I would tag you in this post because I thought you would like this place and might want to include it in your itinerary :)

These quarries (there are actually more of them in this area) are easily accessible on foot from the Karlstejn Castle, which is just a short (30 minutes) train ride from Prague so you can definitely make it ;) The path around the crater is safe, well marked and well maintained so even your "non hiking" friends will make it ;)

No worries, haha, we are a small country but with a lot to offer :) I have spent most of my life in the Czech Republic but there are still so many cool places here that I haven´t visited yet so don´t be afraid of missing some :) Even if you pack your itinerary as much as possible, you will see just a tiny fraction of what the country offers but it´s ok and it will make you want to come back ;) You will enjoy your time here, I´m 100% sure...

That's awesome! Because so far when I visited a foreign country we only focused on urban tourist attractions and didn't dare to see the outdoors just because we were afraid the trails won't be marked and that we also needed a car to reach them. So you made my day with this news and we'll definitely include both the canyon and the caste in our itinerary!

No doubt about wanting to return someday as it always happened to us to see a country and then find out about some more places from the same country which we missed and made us want to return one day. In fact, I've been exploring Romania for almost 15 years and still didn't see all of it, so I can understand the struggle to have a good itinerary in just 5-6 days of staying. But will keep an eye out on your posts to steal some more destinations from Czehia for sure, haha :D

No problem, I will help you prepare the itinerary :) In fact, I don´t drive so I also use just trains, buses, public transport and my legs when I explore new places here so I will give you some tips on cool places (both urban and natural) that you can visit easily like that ;) In fact, there are amazing natural places even in Prague. Just google out some pictures of for example "Prokopské Údolí", "Divoká Šárka" or "Průhonický Park". I wrote posts about them too but it would take me ages to find them now :D

That's exactly how I trip too! Only with public transport or by walking. Thank you for some more recommendations, adding these to my list 😁

Excellent photos. Thank you for sharing!

Glad to know that you enjoyed this post. Cheers! :)

Oh, wow! That place is amazing 💚 I loved the photos!
So you're going to be a dad 🌱👶🏻👨‍👩‍👧 🌼 congratulations @phortun 🤗

Thank you and thank you! :D

You're welcome 😁

Since my fiancee is pregnant, we didn´t want to get exhausted too much

So some good news is about to come. Congratulations to both of you.

Yeah, in a few months, hopefully :) Thank you!

beautiful and fascinating place, but it's important to be careful and respect the dangers. I'm glad you and your fiancee were able to enjoy the quarry from a safe distance.

I love the photos you took. They really capture the scale and beauty of the quarry. I especially like the one with the waterfall cascading into the water. It's amazing to think that this quarry was once a working quarry, and now it's a popular tourist destination.

Thanks buddy! Yeah, this is actually quite common with quarries here in Central Europe. When the quarry is mined out, it gets flooded with water (rain water or groundwater) and it gradually becomes a tourist attraction or a place where people go to relax. There is such a quarry in my hometown too and I saw some in Poland as well.

Btw there is no waterfall in the Velka Amerika Quarry, I think what you mean is just a path that connects the edges of the crater with the bottom ;)

I heard on the news it's been very hot in Europe recently, 38 degrees is quite unbearable especially since I imagine air conditioning is not available in most places. We've had the opposite in UK, rain and strong winds, such a big contrast.

Congrats on the baby!!! When can we expect mini Phortun?

Yeah, the weather has been crazy in most parts of the world. But it´s already been like this for some time already and it´s only worsening. That´s just us, humans, reaping what we sow by constantly exploiting and pissing off Mother Nature... You are right, ACs are not really common here in my country, it was not needed in the past. The summers were perfectly bearable when I was a kid...

Thank you! :) The mini Phortun (girl) should be here in a few months :)

It looks fascinating but I don't think I will enjoy it if I will be there because I'm very afraid of heights. But anyway thanks for sharing I enjoyed just looking at my screen - hehe.Hope you have a great day @phortun and Congratulations on the new blessing 👶

Thank you! :) Well, in fact, I´m not a big fan of heights either but it feels pretty safe on the edge. There are safety fences and railings everywhere. I just tried to take the pictures without them (the barriers) so maybe that´s why it looks a bit dangerous and "vertigoish" :)

Ohh, haha I see. Anyway, great shots as always.👏

Czech Grand Caynon is super beautiful, you are very lucky for being able to visit this place, specially with the almost 40 degrees that you are facing!! Amazing landscape and pictures!

Thank you very much! :) It was a pleasure to take you on this little trip with me through the photos :)

People going beyond and trying everything. Such incidents we can avoid if we just follow the guidelines. Amazing landscape specially with lake

Well said. Most of the tragedies wouldn´t happen if people respected the guidelines... Thanks for stopping by!

Looks like a cool place

It is! Thanks for stopping by man :)

Magnificent view <3 I would love to hike in this area and take a lot of photos.

Thanks! :) Maybe you will visit this place one day, who knows :)

I hope so. :D

A spectacular place just like the attached pictures.

Thanks buddy!

Absolutely stunning. The Czech Grand Canyon will definitely make you in awe of its great rock formations all over the place.

Stunning place indeed, thanks for checking out the pictures :) Cheers!

At this time, the temperature inside Multan is also 39 and it is very hot, the sun is very strong here, due to which one cannot even go to the outside in the afternoon. All these places looks like heaven. I always like to see this type of natural beauty and many many congratulations to you and your future wife.

Thank you for your kind words and wishes :) I hope the heatwave in your place will fade away soon. 39 C is unbearable... Have a nice day!

Most welcome. Have a nice day.

Woah what an amazing Creation! I didn't knew that Czech has a hidden beauty 😍 but thanks to you Now i know hehe

Thank you! Well, I think that every country has its own hidden gems and my little homeland is no exception to that ;)

Hi mate!

It has been around 37C here as well. I would love to go such places to get cooler, but it has been forbidden due to possible wildfires.

I didn't know that Çekya has such rocky valley. Can someone reach the water/lake? I would want to do bbq here :)

Thanks for the post!

Yeah, it has been really hot lately. And that´s still nothing compared to what some places in Southern Europe have been dealing with (48 C in Sicily etc.)

In the past, there were no restrictions and people could do whatever they wanted in the quarry but after so many deadly accidents, the quarry has been closed. So no more barbecues down there...

That's a beautiful place, too bad some idiots ruined in for everyone by getting themselves killed. I guess they don't use ropes or flotation devices if they can't swim well. Thanks for sharing the photos, absolutely beautiful!

Thanks! Well, many of those who lost their lives in the quarry were also drunk... Barbecues and wild parties were common there I guess. Plus various accidents, suicides... No wonder the authorities decided to close it down. But some people ignore the barriers anyway. In fact, another two men died in there just a few days before our visit...

That's sad, sounds like the two guys weren't real bright and probably drunk of their asses...

Actually, the first one was a diver and the other one was a random passer-by who was watching the rescue operation of the drowning diver from the edge of the crater and fell down while filming it with his phone. Both dead. Weird coincidence...

That is just bizarre!

Nice place fren, enjoy!

Nice place as long as you stay safely on the edge hehe :) Thanks man!

How majestic. And the dark green water is a gem! Awesome!

Yeah, the water is very clear indeed. I believe it´s because swimming in there is not allowed anymore ;) Thanks for stopping by!

Lovely captures looking down into man made canyon, water a wonderful turquoise blue too....

Thank you :) I wish I could dip in that water, it was pretty hot that day, but if it was allowed, the crowds would probably ruin it. The pool is not big and I can imagine that some unique fragile ecosystem has developed in there. Better keep it closed for people :)

Pretty to look at, being used giving back to nature a great idea.

THIS place is so amazing and wonderfull for tourist, I would love to enjoy there❤️😍

Glad to know that you enjoyed the pictures. I hope you will make it there one day to see it for yourself :)

Very beautiful place to be visit.

It is. Thanks for swinging by.

Over the years, the quarry has claimed many casualties (mostly drownings and deadly falls)

So tragic😰

The view is superb by the way 😃

Thank you :) Yeah, many casualties, unfortunately, but it wouldn´t happen if people respected the guidelines...

I know right? people need to be careful.

Wow this is so beautiful and thanks for sharing.

My pleasure! Thanks for checking it out :)

These are really great pictures I must confess

Thanks for your feedback :)

It's a very nice land formation.
The photography also captures every detail of the view.

Thanks for checking out the pictures :)

Thanks for the retweet!

WUO! it is very nice, you can bathe there? although reading that it can be somewhat risky, it may not be true?

No you can´t swim in the lake. You can just watch it from behind the safety fence on the edges. It´s all written in the post ;)
