Fruit time!

A few weeks ago while reading a post by @erikah, I learned that this berry is called currants. Of course, I remember this fruit from my childhood days, but I knew the name of it in another language. Back in those days, it was not my favourite kind of fruit. I guess it was a bit sour for me. Now, I do like them as well as all types of berries. They can be consumed fresh or prepared as jam, as my mother use to make it.

IMG_20220713_081926.jpg

The currant (actually redcurrant) brought fruits this year. There are three shrubs in the garden of my mom, so I helped her to pick them. It is a kind of relaxing task, at least for me it was like a nice and easy activity. One of the neighbours saw me and greeted me as he hasn't seen me for a year. The very next question coming from him was did I miss these "agricultural activities"? :D

IMG_20220713_081958.jpg

It was funny, but I really don't see picking redcurrants as a hard and demanding job. In some twenty minutes the red marbles from the shrubs disappeared. They all finished in the bowls.

IMG_20220713_081937.jpg

This is what the shrub looks like. It is not very tall, around one meter and the fruits are protected by the sun with bigger leaves. I took the photos before we started the harvest, though I am wondering if it would bring one more time fruits this season?

IMG_20220713_081914.jpg

After cleaning them from some leaves and small petioles, the result is one and a half kg of clean berries, ready to consume raw or for some culinary specialities. Almost everything finished as jam! {It was not me making it, but I tried the next day the jam. It was great!}

IMG_20220712_172006.jpg

But redcurrants are not the only fruits in the gardens of my family. They have a few trees of apricots, however, this year was not very good for this fruit. They didn't have a lot of them, and until I came here, almost no apricots left what I could see or taste. Only one, which still needs a few days to ripe. The rest of them is just past now...

The grapes in the garden of my parents-in-law are still not ripe, they will be ready to consume just at the end of summer or the beginning of autumn. The way how they grow is nice, in clusters. We can clearly see that these ones are immature, and most probably I will not be here to have the opportunity to eat a few of them.

IMG_20220713_083226.jpg

mipiano_banners_strip_gimp.png

In the old house, there are plums, tomatoes, pumpkins, cucumbers, strawberries (the season is already finished), figs, hot peppers... and menta.

Why menta? I am not sure why it is there, but I know that it was not planted. It grew by itself. Many, many years ago, I remember there were a lot of menta plants in that part of the garden, and they were growing almost without control. It smells great when you rub mint leaves with your fingers. Its flower is pale violet, almost white in colour.

IMG_20220713_083800.jpg

IMG_20220713_083850.jpg

The flower of the pumpkin is so nice, similar to the flower of the cucumber. It is yellow, appearing between the huge green leaves of the plant.

IMG_20220713_083210.jpg

The yield of it will be this one pumpkin. Maybe just in the moment, and there will be more, but at the moment I saw just this one. It needs to grow and mature. Once again, a thing I will not see when it will be ready to harvest.

IMG_20220713_083601.jpg

However, tomatoes are another story. They mature in different stages and times, so there are many of those that we do eat right now, though there are still many green tomatoes. Also, we can enjoy different types of tomatoes, I prefer this kind from the first photo.

The taste of it? Extraordinary!

Plums are very popular here. The climate is good for this fruit, that is the most probable reason why so many plum trees are around. Also, the amount of fruit on the trees is awesome. Look at this:

IMG_20220718_090937.jpg

..and this... They grow as individual fruits, but they resemble a cluster because of the number of plums in each branch. When they will be ripe, a homemade fruit brandy will be made of them. This type of very strong brandy is brewed usually in autumn. If you are not used to taking it, just one small glass of it can warm up the mood and body. When you feel that heat in the cheeks, maybe then you should stop!

IMG_20220718_090910.jpg

When we offered it to our Spanish friends and they tried a bit, they thought it was fire in the
throat!

IMG_20220713_083522.jpg

IMG_20220713_083351.jpg

Figs are not an autochthonous type of fruit for this climate. Still, it can grow and bring the sweet fruits I so much like. They are riping slowly, I already had the pleasure to eat a few, but the majority of the figs are still green and immature.

IMG_20220715_183948.jpg

Waiting for this one to be ready to come to my plate in a few days :))

IMG_20220718_090727.jpg

Summer is the time when those who have gardens and orchards can recollect the fruits of their labour. It is not just nice to see, but the whole process is a great physical activity that helps stay active during the winter or spring too. Not to forget that the taste of the fruits that come from your own garden can't be compared with those that we buy in the supermarkets. If you are lucky to have some piece of land or a garden and you cultivate some vegetables and fruits, I am sure that you know the difference!

It was funny, but I really don't see picking redcurrants as a hard and demanding job.

It depends how many you have 😜, we have more than 3, around 15 actually, so it is a bit of work.

I'm a bit shocked to see figs. I did not know it can be grown around here. How cold is winter over there?

I envy those tomatoes as we only have greens right now. I suppose two weeks is still needed.

Congrats for the garden and greetings to your parents!🙂

oh, with 15 shrubs I would complain too :P

Yes, figs. There were several trees, many of them died during some of the cold winters. How cold the winters are here? It can go to -20 degrees of Celsius and even colder during some nights in cold winters. But usually, it is not for the whole winter, still the fig tree has to be wrapped and protected from that cold.

The tomatoes are excellent. Different types and shapes and times of ripening. Always happens that when we are here and eat every day these tomatoes from the garden, later I just refuse to eat those untasty ones from the supermarkets. The difference is huge, so I prefer to skip the tomatoes if I can't have them in this home edition. ;)

Wow, you have a variety of fruits and veggies on your family gardens and they are mostly fruiting! It is good to see the currants all bright. They look like tiny marbles on the big bowl :)

That's a nice comparison, the redcurrants do look like red marbles in the bowl :))

They're beautiful and inviting :) I do wish we can grow them here but they might not thrive as it is colder in our region.

I completely agree with you!
All the best from your garden!
And harvesting is a pleasant fatigue when there is a lot of work.

There is sometimes a lot of work, I know, but in the end, knowing that it comes from the own garden pays off everything :)

Yes it is!

A lovely selection of fruit!
Those flowers are indeed lovely, especially the mint one! Delicate!
I love plums! Are those ones there sweet? Up here they are more of a late Summer to Autumn thing, but looks like you get them much earlier..

The mint flower is nice indeed, that's why it attracted my attention :)

Yes, the plums are pretty sweet ones. There are different types here as well, some are already mature and sweet but others are still not good.

Do you have in your garden fruits or some veggies?

Ah, so some getting ripe a littler later too.. ok.. 🙂👍

We haven an apple tree.. but it has to look after itself somehow.. :D

I have tried in the past, getting some inspiration from my sister who is a professional gardener, alas... there are always other things taking over, and this hot weather doesn't help with my efforts keeping on top of things.

So, really, apart from that tree and a couple of strawberries.. (that's berries, not plants, mind you.. 😄), the answer has to be "no"..

We do have flowering shrubs, though, for the insects.. but I think, I might have to rethink things a little with these ever changing conditions.. 🤔

Flowering shrubs are also nice, for decoration. I also like to see nicely organized gardens, with ornamental flowers. Though having some own fruits is not bad :))

Your sister is a professional gardener? That's cool :) You can always ask her for advice 😎

Lovely berries 😍. I also encountered "currants" in my childhood, yet now it feels like none. The best thing is that birds won't attack the vineyard? Sparrow is all over here, and that shurb of berries will surely be a feast for birds if I grew in our area.

I love that, like you are living organically. 🥰

I don't know if the birds would choose the berries. Maybe yes, I didn't see them attacking these shrubs. But there are many bugs in recent years that are having a feast with all other, mainly sweet fruits. It's not easy to get rid of them.

Thanks for your visit @eunoia101

Thanks a lot 😊 🍇🍅🥒🍈

Beautiful garden selection!

It is :))
Thanks @mypathtofire for stopping by and for sharing it on Twitter 🍇

I am not familiar in currants. I thought there's no berries like this here in Philippines but @Eunioa101 said there's one.

Maybe it is not that spread in Philippines, I guess the climate has to match the needs of the plant.

What a beauty of fruit and how fortunate that the soil is fertile. The area where I live the soil is difficult for cultivation. Greetings.

Oh yes, the soil also has to be fertile, you are right. There is always a possibility to make the soil more fertile, using compost but it is more difficult, for sure.
Thank you for stopping by :)

Ohh everything looks so delicious! We have only 3 small bushes of red currants and they are already done. It wasn't a big harvest this year but still, considering they are young bushes, they did great! We also have a fig tree and they are already ripe. Very very ripe! And honestly, I just ate one a couple of minutes ago.

Well, see what I brought from the garden just 2 hours ago. And ahhhh.... that dry small olive tree I brought it from Greece. But it didnt make it. :-?? hehe.😒 😕

Lovely collection of photos btw! It's great we still have some gardening "skills" and desire to grow our own, as best as we can and know.

cheers from Romania! Hopefully all is great for you in Spain! (my aunt is in Spain for 2 weeks, ahhh lucky her) ...

Oh, the figs look so ripe already. Seems that they also matured earlier at your place! And the olive tree, maybe try to plant it in a bigger pot? Or outside in the garden, but I am afraid with the winters in Romania it would not survive...

Lucky your aunt, indeed. Hope she has a great time. I am not in Spain right now, I came to the neighbour country from yours for one month :)) There, I could not have a garden like this, the climate is different.

Yes, they are very ripe. But we have a lot more of them, unripe. Yes, this year I found it a bit earlier than other years. The harvest is huge, the tree is huge. ❤️

I had the olive tree outside, it didnt work. That was my first choice and after seeing that it gets dry, I put it on my window sill but eventually it died. But that's ok.

Ohh neighbour country with Ro? I've read that you're in your mom's garden if I remeber well? But I thought that is in Spain as well. But I didn't know that you can't grow these fruits and veggies there because of the climate. Is it to dry or hot?

Yeah, it is too dry in Spain. There are places in Spain where veggies and fruits are cultivated, huge areas, but I live just by the sea. Mediterranean climate, the soil is rocky and the vegetation is mostly pine trees, olive trees, almond trees and many many orange trees. Not really suitable for plums, apples, or these we see in my family's garden.

Yes, a neighbour country with Ro. I am right now in Serbia :)

Ohhh I see! Actually I live close to the Serbian Borders, aprox 1-1.5 hrs, depending the entry point. hehe

Wow! Lots of tasty fruits and vegetables in the garden. Lovely pictures those tomates look incredible! I don't think I have ever had a plum in my life. What does it look like in the inside? What about the jam? How was it when it was done?

The jam was very tasty, though it has sugar in it (now a small amount) so not the healthiest version of eating the fruit, but... it is tasty :D

I will make a photo of the plum when it is open :) But until then you to know, it has one big seed inside that you can remove very easily.

Well, not everything is about healthy food. I love jam, but don't eat it very often since it isn't good for health.

I wonder if it's kind of yellowish inside. If that's the case, I have eaten a lot. But that was before socialism got the best of the things out of our reach.

I wonder if it's kind of yellowish inside

greenish and yellowish.

It is not the same ciruela that we can buy in Spain for example, although it is the same name, but not the same fruit.

Oh, ok. Yeah, I have had a lot of ciruelas. We even have our regional kind with is smaller and redder. In that case, plums are something I have only known by scent in soap. 😂

There are many types of plants in your mother's garden, But what impressed me the most were Berries or Currants Because they are Not Available in Our Country. @mipiano 😁

I guess that there are many fruits from your place that are not available in my country. It all depends on the climate too, if a plant can grow at a certain place or not. Thanks for stopping by :)

You're welcome @mipiano, I agree with your opinion, so that's the reason I like Berries Or Currants because they are not in our place. 😁

How beautiful it is, ha? Missed it?:)
I can see "vesela masina" is going to be busy this autumn.😂

Do mosquitoes come with all the labour?

Oh, yes, vesela masina comes every autumn, though we will not be here already.

Don't even ask about mosquitoes 😂
I didn't miss them hahhaha

Wow… what an abundance of fruit and veggies. So wonderful to see. Love the plums.
The red currants are sour, but nice and healthy.
Great you could help pick them… I can imagine it is therapeutic. 😎😁
Have a wonderful time with your family @mipiano 👋🏻☀️ Enjoy your Monday ☀️

Yes, abundance indeed. We should learn to appreciate all this. Sometimes we are not aware of how many benefits there are, just from having a piece of land or a garden.

How it is in Spain these days? Is it too hot already?

Enjoy the evening you too @littlebee4

Exactly like that, we should appreciate those things a bit more. That is why… with our move I would like a garden and start just that. Fruit, herbs and veggies in the garden. Can’t wait 🥰🌹

Yep, it is not funny… today and tomorrow a heat wave is going over most of Europe. Crazy warm.
Our air con unit crashed… last evening. Pppffff 🥵🥵🥵 30 degrees Celsius inside. Just to hot to think…
Tomorrow a technician comes. Hope he can fix it, last time the landlord was not willing to fix it just a clean.

Have a wonderful evening @mipiano 👋🏻😁 enjoy 😊

This are lovely. Really appreciate you sharing this.
This is the very first time I will be seeing this fruits from their respective trees.

Thank you for sharing this today.

Cheers

Thanks for stopping by :)
I am glad you could see the fruits from this post!

It's so pleasant to my eyes to see those kinds of fruits and the likes. I love gardening too and I plant tomatoes, pumpkins and many more. It's my first time to see those red marbles. It's like it'e very enjoyable to pick them up.

Then you know how good these tomatoes are, as you also have them. 🍅
The redcurrants I suppose that are not that spread and maybe the climate is not suitable for them everywhere. Thanks for stopping by ☺️

The currants look amazing! It looks familiar so I decided if we have this kind of fruit here in the Philippines, and I was surprised that we have. It is just that I am not aware of what is it called 😅

Our variation has broader and longer leaves and is not as reddish.

Is this one edible? There are so many different plants that have berries that look like similar, but a lot of them are not suitable for consumption. We have to be sure about them before we pick and try :))

Based on what I've read online, yes, it is edible 😁. Though I never tried to eating it

We have a garden in one of the villages near the city where we living, which this year produced many fruits such as cherries, blackberries and yellow plums. Of course, we also had black plums in our garden, but unfortunately the roots of that tree dried up!!!!!

I like black plums very much to make fruit leather. black plum fruit leather is very sour and delicious😋😇🥰 If you are interested in fruit leather, i suggest you try it.

Cool that you have a garden in the nearby village. It is also a nice activity, isn't it? :))

I have to be honest and say that I didn't know what fruit leather was, so I googled it :)

Wow, so much deliciousness! And I barely found mint this year.

Yes, many delicious fruit and vegetable. There are more, but I didn't post them :D
Thanks for dropping by @photohaus

Wow, so blessed having such garden. I will surely enjoy oicking those if I am there. 🤗
Those shrubs looka yummy 🤤

I think too that I am happy to be right now here, with these fruits and veggies that grow in the garden. Hehe, take care when you pick berries, to pick those that are edible :)
{sorry for the so late response, I missed some comments earlier...}
