Burn out is real?

in SublimeSundaylast year

I posted almost every day for years on our blockchain but rarely do these days and I've been wondering why?

I have been blogging on one platform or another for longer than I care to remember. I have blogs from over 13 years ago that still generate income.

I had my own websites back in the early 1990's before it all went to corporate monopolistic shit.

Drone photography

I have way to many distractions with making videos and taking photos with drones and my camera and now music production these days is taking more of my time...and even that doesn't happen often?

I've only produced 4 videos in the last 12 months which is unlike my usual output. (I don't count shorts as videos)

I used to blog daily and make a video once or twice a week! That sounds insane now I'm thinking about it?

Trying to improve the quality of my videography has become a drag on my brain and not the fun activity it used to be.

Tbh I'm feeling a little burnt out?

To burn out you must've been on fire.

I've also got a touch of G.A.S. (gear acquisition syndrome)

A Synthesizer my latest purchase

It's all got a little bit harder to find what exactly I want to do? What to focus on?

I know first world problems but still problems none the less.

The weird thing about this content creation lark is you never know when something will suddenly take off and go viral like this video from years ago is suddenly getting lots of views from who knows where? This happens quite often?

I'm good at SEO and optimisation but that doesn't account for this result?

Dtube vs YouTube

While I'm mulling all of this over I'm still doing a bit of manual curation and the odd comment but that's about it?

If I produce 1 blog a week it's a miracle. Video? forget it.

I might go back through my blogs and see what exactly it is that I've actually been doing and produced for all of those years of my time and attention?

Maybe I'll find some motivational inspiration from my past self?
My mojo is definitely not working!

It certainly wasn't about making money.

I enjoyed the experience but now I'm more inclined to think about the best way to spend the time I have left? 🤔

Nothing and no one lasts forever.

What do I want to do? Huge question to answer. I have no answer. 🤯😂👍🏼

Curiously I've never been happier? Go figure. 😂👍🏼

I'm glad I got this down in writing at least now it's out of my brain so that's one less thing to think about.

How's your day going? 😂😂👍🏼

man... I struggle with burnout all the time. I actually spend a lot more time burned out than on fire! haha
Im laughing but it doesnt feel funny a lot of the time.
The best time when I was happiest and healthiest was when I stopped doing everything during the pandemic and began meditating every day. It was beautiful....but that feels a long way behind me now : (
look after yourself
happiness and healthiness are way better than content and cash (in my opinion)

Hi Basil, like I mentioned. You must've been on fire in order to burn out.
I've seen and heard the music that you've created and it's great.
Creativity isn't a tap we can turn on and off like a faucet.

Sometimes we have to step back and wait until the muse decides it's time to produce something.

Some people may think that they are in control of their own music/lives but I think this is an illusion.

Creativity can occur when we least expect it and we have to be receptive and listening for it.

I 100% agree with you.

Keeping busy is not the right way to spend time. We must take time for ourselves first.
🤔🎶🎸👍🏼

thankyou for that encouraging response. creativity is a strange and mysterious beast. If we try to tame it we can accidentally destroy it, but if it is not carefully listened to, it can jump out and destroy us as well! hehe

are you thinking of making it to the meetup in brick lane on thursday? theres a chance i might be able to make it...

Creativity is indeed a mysterious thing.
I was hoping to get to the meetup in brick lane. Weather permitting lol.

exactly my thoughts!

Sounds like you're putting your time and attention where you want it to go and it's not Hive 😍. I'm torn sometimes between making and writing about making.

No short answer although I can understand why that video is getting a lot of views right now as people struggle with energy prices etc.

Sounds like you're putting your time and attention where you want it to go and it's not Hive

Yep I'm basically putting my time into me and putting content creation on the back burner.
Not just on hive but on all social media.

YouTube, Twitter and LinkedIn have all been virtually abandoned by me. It seems that a lot of people that I know have taken a step back from all of these platforms?

I'm trying to focus on actually creating new music rather than talking about the process and the gear involved.

Making music i.e. practicing doesn't make good videos in my opinion. I've filmed myself practicing and it's tedious to watch even for me! 😂🤔🎶🎸👍🏼

I know what you mean, I spend endless hours swatching, building my technique and trying out ideas. It's all nothing to see here 😍.

I still enjoy YouTube as a consumer. I don't create or comment much.

The problem (I find) with those social media platforms is that they don't give much back. After a while it's very boring. It was being fed up with facebook back in 2014-2015 that got me back into knitting after decades; I de-activated my account in 2016, and Twitter years before that (what a time-suck that was). So many of these platforms failed in their potential. Linked In was an interesting place to go for expert information; people refused to link if they didn't have an established relationship with you. Now I'm just assailed with recruiters and headhunters!

Hive has some of that early energy I enjoyed on social media platforms, meeting people from different walks of life, places, interests. I dread it becoming Tunbridge Wells by any other name. No offence to Tunbridge Wells, but you know what I mean 😁

I spend endless hours swatching, building my technique and trying out ideas. It's all nothing to see here

I think this may be part of the problem. People today want instant answers to their questions rather than taking the time to figure things out themselves.

Without doing the necessary work they will never understand what it really takes to master a skill?

Any skill takes time to acquire but in this instant fix society we are losing valuable lessons and knowledge.

I dumped fb years ago and Twitter I used only for backlinks which isn't necessary these days.
I've got the same issues with LinkedIn just a constant stream of recruiters trying to convince me to join them?

It's just a huge waste of my valuable time.

Hive is the exception in that we actually get to meet people we interact with.

Hive has a future unlike these other social media platforms which are doomed just like Myspace. Nobody thought Myspace would disappear?

Tunbridge wells 😂😂👍🏼

Try 3speak? dtube has a STEEM stigma attached to it.., but the burnout... oh yes.. I feel it often.

I had no idea there was a stigma attached to dtube? I try to avoid online drama.

I have posted on 3Speak and will consider it next time I have something to post.

Yep burnout is real and the only way to get over it (for me) is to just stop and rest. No matter how long it takes.

The guy who runs dTube has a reputation in the negatives.., that doesn't happen by chance!

Wow that doesn't sound good? I don't even know who's who in the zoo? I'll check it out. Thanks for the info. 👍🏼

Update. Just looked into it. I'll be posting on 3Speak from now on...when I've got something to post of course 🤯🤔😂👍🏼

I think it ebbs and flows. Maybe in your case it is ebbing just that bit longer :O)

I agree sometimes we just have to wait for the tide to turn. Creativity cannot be forced.

I have been waiting for a day like this. To read your new post. Yeah, thanks for putting this down in writing. My day is going well. Please always make out time to blog even though you are busy with other things. Have a great weekend friend

Hello chichieze and thank you for your comments.

When something happens like burnout we must first take the time to consider what causes it.

Then take the appropriate action which in my case means stop. If I continued to fight it. It will get worse.

Sometimes the best action is no action at all.

Happier than ever ... sounds like a success story. Blogging everyday is good. Me. Mostly just here with photos and words. I used to Vlog and all that but it was a LOT of work. With writing too ... I don't know how I physically found the time. Looking back, I can say that Youtube had us all chasing the proverbial carrot on the stick. #HIVE promotes more balance and actually rewards WAY better.

I don't know how I physically found the time.

You and me both. When I want to do something it gets done but by the same token if I find it onerous it gets dropped pronto.

I used to enjoy editing videos but lately it's been a chore and that's not fun.

The curious thing about this is that as my editing improved it dawned on me that many people seemed to prefer less polished videos and it's quite difficult to make something look amateurish when they could be so much better?

It's just another skill to acquire to make things seem less manufactured?

In fact virtually unedited videos are my most viewed?

Baffling but true in my experience?

I've also noticed that many people who got monetized or remonetized on YT at the same time as me have deleted all of their content?

It's very weird but there it is?

Hive is different in as much as we all own a piece of it and it's ours to do with as we see fit plus I've met lots of people in real life via hive. It's a totally unique experience.

My videos are still up on youtube, but I quit producing for them before they actually demonetized me. I saw the writing on the wall and began to see too that the 'success' stories on youtube were manufactured by larger entities. The times my channel would make headway and then fall back down to a few dozen views was disheartening. Of course, now I understand youtube is corporately-driven and not user-driven. A unhealthy environment for anyone.

YT can be very unhealthy if you get sucked into the hype machine, that our channels have to be businesses?

It has always been an advertising driven platform. It's just more so these days.
Anything that is not advertiser friendly is basically going to get nowhere.

Where does that leave art for art sake?
High and dry unfortunately.

Well ... at least it is not wet cold. LOL

😂😂👍🏼 touché

Oh I totally get it! I got bitten by the Digital Audio Workstation bug several years ago. So much fun! I love my FL Studio! There are so many quality free instruments! You can play with it for free forever if you like. Best deal ever!

Hello Paul, hope you're having a good time with the family over the holidays.
Yep I've got the DAW gas lol I bought the M-Audio Oxygen Pro mini 32 keys and it comes with a stack of software. Abelton live plus 4 other sets of instruments packs.

The grand piano is amazing. I haven't used a synth since the 80's but it's a great bit of kit.

I'm on a steep learning curve just now but it's coming together. 🎶🎥👍🏼

Like a time machine. I can spend hours on it, yet it only feels like moments!

I know what you mean. It's very engaging messing around with all the sounds. Fascinating in fact 🎶🎸👍🏼

Sometimes the effort v rewards in life aint worth it. crack open the gin

Here's the thing @grindle If I was doing any of this stuff for the rewards I would have never done any of it.

I did it because I enjoyed the process whether taking photos or making videos it is/was just a great fun hobby.

I learned a lot of new things in the process which is rewarding enough in itself. I enjoy learning.

I'm lucky that I don't need to make money from my hobbies but at the same time if people think it is of some value to them and they upvote it. I'm not going to turn it down.

I'm not thinking about financial rewards (I've made plenty) just a general lack of my direction at the moment.

I'm pretty sure that you would still be clambering around in those abandoned buildings regardless of whether you were making money from the activity?

I'm sure most of us do these things that people call content primarily because we enjoy doing it?

If I wanted to make money I would still be teaching lol.

This is supposed to be fun?

It's a bit like those tv bingo ads!

When it stops being fun...stop!

PS I don't drink lol maybe I should take it up?

A kindred spirit! My feelings entirely, I was persuaded to come here by a fellow traveller @slobberchops > I haven't a clue still, what the hive is all about, but I love it!! I like my hobby and my camera; and here it is far more grown up than fuckbook, or meta or whatever twat face is calling it these days.

It is never too late to imbibe the odd glass!!!

I haven't got a clue either about how hive works which is shocking considering that I teach computer science. I know the blockchain stuff and databases but as to the rest of it...clueless lol

It is never too late to imbibe the odd glass!!!

I might've had a drop or two back in the old days but my body and brain just doesn't like the after effects.

I'll stick with Adam's ale 😂👍🏼

$321 and 1 cent. Better than a kick in the arse but it's mad how more people haven't jumped on the Hive bandwagen. I bet its because of the crypto stigma. If it was marketed differently then maybe more people would come.

If you could answer that little conundrum it would be quite interesting.

I know why some people do what they do on social media.

The masses are just looking for distractions. They consume content. They don't generally create content.

Their consumption patterns are very valuable to marketers.

True. I think the dawn of Tik tok amplifies this. Plus people have a shorter attention span these days so writing for 20 minutes doesn't interest them. A 1 minute video does.

The day is going well.

Good to hear it👍🏼
