Strictly formally, Stari Ras (Old Ras) is a medieval fortress that was at the same time the capital of the Serbian state of Raška (Rascia). However, that name is valid for the wider area that formed the core of the medieval Serbian state…
The remains of the fortress are located at the Gradina site above the Old Marketplace (Staro Pazarište), about 11 kilometers west of Novi Pazar, and together with the nearby Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul (Serbian language) and the monasteries Sopoćani and Đurđevi stupovi, it was the historical core of the Serbian medieval state of Raška. The monument complex of Old Ras, together with the monastery of Sopoćani, has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979 as a united protected entity called Stari Ras and Sopoćani. It was the destination of our trip, and the first stop – the Episcopal Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, popularly known as Peter’s Church.
I had the opportunity to visit this wonderful place four years ago on my way to Montenegro. Then we arrived very early in the morning, while there was no one in the church yet, so we could only look at it from the outside. Строго формално, Стари Рас је средњевековна тврђава која је истовремено била и престони град српске државе Рашке. Међутим, тај назив важи и за шире подручје које је чинило језгро средњевековне српске државе…
Остаци тврђаве налазе се на локалитету Градина изнад Старог Трговишта (Пазаришта), око 11 километара западно од Новог Пазара, и заједно са оближњом епископском црквом Светих апостола Петра и Павла и манастирима Сопоћани и Ђурђеви ступови представљала је историјско језгро српске средњовековне државе Рашке. Споменички комплекс Старог Раса се заједно са манастиром Сопоћани почевши од 1979. године налази на УНЕСКО листи Светске баштине као обједињена заштићена целина под називом Стари Рас и Сопоћани. То је било одредиште нашег путовања, а прва станица – епископска црква Светих апостола Петра и Павла, у народу позната као Петрова црква.
Имао сам прилику да ово чудесно место посетим пре четири године на пропутовању ка Црној Гори. Тад смо стигли врло рано ујутро, док још није било никога у цркви, тако да смо могли само да је погледамо споља. Along the southern entrance there is a memorial plaque set up in 1996, which marks eight centuries since the Serbian national councils were held at this place:

The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul is the oldest monument of church architecture in Serbia and is of great importance.
Several epochs have been preserved in the architectural structure of this church. On the site of this temple was an early Christian church, probably a baptistery, from the 6th century. The core of today's building consists of the remains of the oldest building from the 9th century, which is marked in dark blue on the floor plan.
In 1835, the southern room was added to the church (marked in brown) in which the artistic and historical treasures found at this site are kept. You can read the details on the “Nemanjić Endowment” website.

Црква Светих апостола Петра и Павла најстарији је споменик црквене архитектуре у Србији и од изузетног је значаја.
У архитектонском склопу ове цркве сачувано је неколико епоха. На месту овог храма била је ранохришћанска црква, вероватно крстионица, из VI века. Језгро данашње грађевине чине остаци најстарије грађевине из IX века, која је на тлоцрту обележена тамноплавом бојом.

“The Church of St. Peter and Paul is inextricably linked with the life of Saint Simeon Nemanja, the wise founder of the Nemanjic Dynasty. Born in Ribnica, after persecution from Raska due to family conflicts, Zavid's father baptized Stefan Nemanja according to the customs of the Roman Catholic faith, because there were no Orthodox priests in Dukla at that time. Upon his return to Raska, the young Stefan Nemanja received the Orthodox faith in the Church of St. Peter and Paul, where many church councils and meetings of the Serbian authorities with representatives of the Byzantine Empire were held during his reign. Srefan Nemanja and his wife Ana got married in Peter's Church. Stefan Nemanja's youngest son, Rastko, who was born in the nearby village of Deževa, was baptized here. The wide and deep baptistery is still visible today.”

„Црква Светих апостола Петра и Павла нераскидиво је повезана са животом Светог Симеона Немање, мудрог оснивача Династија Немањића. Рођен у Рибници, након прогона из Рашке због породичних сукоба, отац Завида је Стефана Немању крстио по обичајима римо-католичке вере, јер у то време у Дукљи није било православног свештенства. At this place, in 1196, Stefan Nemanja left the ruling throne and the management of the medieval Serbian state to his son, Stefan First Crowned. Finally, in 1219, Saint Sava designated the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul as the seat of the Raska episcopate. Given the long and turbulent history of this area, only traces of ancient art frescoes remain… in several layers:
“Several layers of frescoes have been preserved in the church of St. Peter, which mostly follow the chronology of the architectural changes of this church. The first and oldest layer of frescoes is in the tambour of the dome – this painting dates from the 9th century. The second unit dates from the 11th century. The third part of the frescoes was most probably created during the time of Stefan Nemanja, that is, immediately after the decoration of his endowment Đurđevi Stupovi in Ras. The youngest and best preserved layer of frescoes is a fresco whose founder was probably King Uroš the First. According to some stylistic features, this painting is close to the wall paintings in Arilje and the chapel of King Dragutin in Đurđevi Stupovi.”

На овом месту је 1196. године Стефан Немања препустио владарски престо и управљање средњовековном српском државом свом сину, Стефану Првовенчаном. Најзад, Свети Сава је 1219. године одредио цркву Светих апостола Петра и Павла за седиште Рашке епископије. С обзиром на дугу и бурну историју ових крајева, од древних уметничких фресака остали су само трагови… и то у неколико слојева:
„У цркви Светог Петра сачувано је неколико слојева живописа, који углавном прате хронологију градитељских промена овог храма. Први и најстарији слој фресака је у тамбуру кубета – ово сликарство потиче из 9. века. Друга целина потиче из 11. века. Трећи део живописа највероватније је настао у време Стефана Немање, односно непосредно после украшавања његове задужбине Ђурђеви Ступови у Расу. Намлађи и најбоље очувани слој фресака је живопис чији је ктитор вероватно био краљ Урош Први. Many will be interested in the fact that one of the richest Greek-Archaic golden repositories was found under the church, but I think the architecture is much more interesting: the church is devoid of proper shapes, as if Antonio Gaudi had an influence in its construction. Special attention is drawn to the Byzantine rotunda with a dome and a miniature gallery from which the ruling families followed the religious services. The gallery windows can be seen from the altar space:
Многима ће бити занимљив и податак да је испод темеља цркве пронађена једна од најбогатијих грчко-архајских златних остава, али мислим да је много занимљивија архитектура: Црква је лишена правилних облика, као да је Антонио Гауди имао утицај у њеној градњи. Посебну пажњу привлачи византијска ротунда са куполом и минијатурном галеријом са које су владарске породице пратиле богослужења. Са простора олтара виде се прозори галерије:

…and the interior, despite its millennial duration, with this lighting and mysterious symbols on the walls, leaves a fascinating impression of the interior of a spaceship. You just have to feel it.
