When I heard a few months ago that a new adaptation of the book by James Clavell was being made, I knew we would get a show with a capital S. And I was not disappointed. I don't know the 1980 series or the book itself, but I feel that while waiting for the sequel, I will read one of these works. I used to enjoy reading and hearing about Japan, but when I learned too much about them, I lost interest in them. I appreciate their culture, art and their contribution to change the world for the better, but... Some things are unacceptable to me. Unnecessary cruelty, blind obedience to his Daimyō (it means Feudal Lord, although sometimes I will use this title mockingly. Everyone wants to feel at least a little bit of power, even small land lords who also sometimes treated their people cruelly.), treating children and women as property, extreme patriarchy, fanatical understanding of honor and a few other things. In such moments, one immediately appreciates our religion and customs. I am not a historian, but in my life I have been lucky to meet various people who know this country. Both contemporary Japan and individual stages of its history. The social structure and their approach and perspective, problems, challenges, everyday life of ordinary Japanese people. From books, films, people's stories, historical studies, historical curiosities presented in an attractive form on YouTube. Everything I heard there was in that show. I won't reveal what. It will be better when you see it for yourself. Since the series is for adults, you will see blood and things that are not very pleasant to the eye. Flying pieces of bodies, parts of it in various states of decomposition and one of the most brutal executions I have ever heard of, which the Japanese took from the Mongols.
The series takes place in the 1600s. The main character is an English sailor, John Blackthorne. Only he and a dozen or so sailors survived the difficult crossing through dangerous ocean waters. They crashed in Japan, where a power struggle began. The Regency Council decided Lord Yoshii Toranaga's fate, which was death. However, the character played by Hiroyuki Sanada is lucky, because a ship equipped with muskets, cannons, valuables and a very determined white man crashed on his lands. In addition, he is smart, impudent and seasoned in battle (interesting fact - I haven't checked it personally, but this is supposedly the opinion of Asians themselves - although they cannot be called stupid, they are apparently unable to think like us, white people. It hurts them terribly. that our civilization has often deceived them in a cruel way.). Combined with the Japanese mentality (in this case, pride, an unhealthy belief in one's superiority), this is a destructive combination for Lord Toranaga's enemies. I summarized part of the episode, but you could read it from the trailers. It lasts a little longer than an hour, but it was great to watch. Very good pacing, there was neither too much nor too little content, the characters played convincingly and at an appropriately high level. Just as I often complain about the theatrical style of Japanese actors, here it fits perfectly into this idealistic understanding of honor and seriousness. This is visible from the very first scenes, with examples of soldiers, commanders and women. As one of the characters said - "Millions of these people want to wipe Lord Toranaga's ass after visiting the toilet." And they are even more respectful towards the Emperor and the titular Shogun. Instead of telling it, I'll just show it. The example comes from anime and concerns China, but the Three Kingdoms Era had a huge impact on the statehood and culture of China and Japan. Even though the Japanese have not liked them for centuries and once called them "swamp dogs". In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they still say that about them, given their racism. The Emperor and the Shōgun were Gods for all the inhabitants of these countries.
Who do I recommend this series to? Absolutely everything. I watched this series with my girlfriend, who watched quite a lot of Asian films as a child (and actually today she also likes to watch Asian series, which sometimes appear on streaming). She usually complains when we watch a new series, but she really liked this one. There are threads for both men and women, more or less equally. The same goes for heroines. Although we have only met one woman so far, she will probably play one of the more important roles, but she has already made an impression on me. This is how you spell women with strong character! I really liked introducing it to the story and spreading out the "crumbs" that will later pay off. At least I hope so. I also recommend it to anime fans. It's like Kingdom Live Action. The diplomacy in the first episode was excellent. Outstanding! I clapped twice seeing the craftsmanship of these dialogues - well written, faithful to the facts and the political sphere. Wonderful eristics on both sides! A wonderful demonstration of how to call someone names and vulgarities that seem like nice words. The knowledge you may have acquired by watching anime and reading manga will pay off in this series.
And this is a work for lovers of good cinema. What do I mean by "good cinema"? A fast-paced action, the best possible implementation of the source material, reflecting the temporal, cultural or other realities important for a given work. And above all, it must be pleasant to watch. In addition, experienced actors and the same directors and screenwriters who know what they are doing. A few times I thought I saw a kimono (if I'm confusing their formal clothes, forgive me. I'm not an expert in this subject, and I know that these "dresses" have different names.) that smacked of artificiality, but these were not important scenes. And let's face it, given the scale of devotion to Japan, such things are minor details. No one will spend more money than necessary on set design. Besides, in the best HBO series that I often recommend (e.g. Boardwalk Empire) such trifles also happened. While watching Shōgun, Asia and I saw scenes from the game Ghost of Tsushima (if you have PS5 and want to spend a little longer and deeper time in this world, I recommend buying it!). Nie znam serialu z 1980, jak również samej książki, ale czuję że w oczekiwaniu na kontynuację, zapoznam się z jednym z tych dzieł. Swego czasu lubiłem czytać i słuchać na temat Japonii, ale gdy dowiedziałem się zbyt wiele na ich temat, straciłem nimi zainteresowanie. Cenię ich kulturę, sztukę i ich wkład w celu zmiany świata na lepsze, ale... Niektóre rzeczy są dla mnie nie do zaakceptowania. Niepotrzebne okrucieństwo, ślepe posłuszeństwo swemu Daimyō (to oznacza Lord Feudalny, choć czasem będę używał tego tytułu prześmiewczo. Każdy chce poczuć choćby odrobinę władzy, nawet drobni władcy ziemscy, którzy również czasem okrutnie traktowali swoich ludzi.), traktowanie dzieci i kobiety jak własności, skrajny patriarchat, fanatyczne pojmowanie honoru i parę innych rzeczy. W takich chwilach człowiek momentalnie docenia naszą religię i obyczaje. Nie jestem historykiem, ale w swoim życiu miałem szczęście trafić na różnych ludzi, którzy znają ten kraj. Zarówno współczesną Japonię, jak i poszczególne etapy jej historii. Strukturę społeczną i ich podejście oraz perspektywę, problemy, wyzwania, codzienność zwykłych Japończyków. Z książek, filmów, podań ludzi, opracowań historycznych, ciekawostek historycznych podanych w atrakcyjnej formie na YouTube. Wszystko co tam usłyszałem, było w tym serialu. Nie będę zdradzał co. Będzie lepiej jak to sami zobaczycie. Z racji że serial jest dla widzów dorosłych, to zobaczycie krew i niezbyt miłe dla oka rzeczy. Latające kawałki ciał, jego elementy w różnym stanie rozkładu i jedną z najbrutalniejszych egzekucji, o jakiej słyszałem, którą Japończycy wzięli od Mongołów.

Postać grana przez Hiroyuki Sanadę ma jednak szczęście, bo na jego ziemiach rozbił się statek wyposażony w muszkiety, armaty, kosztowności i białego, bardzo zdeterminowanego człowieka. Na dodatek sprytnego, bezczelnego i zaprawionego w boju (ciekawostka - osobiście tego nie sprawdzałem, ale to rzekomo opinia samych Azjatów - mimo że nie można nazwać ich głupcami, to podobno nie są w stanie myśleć tak jak my, biali ludzie. Strasznie ich boli to, że niejednokrotnie nasza cywilizacja ich oszukała w okrutny sposób.). W połączeniu z Japońską mentalnością (w tym przypadku pychą, niezdrowym przekonaniu o swojej wyższości), stanowi to destrukcyjne połączenie dla wrogów Lorda Toranagi. Streściłem część odcinka, ale to można było wyczytać z trailerów. Trwa nieco dłużej niż godzinę, a oglądało się go świetnie. Bardzo dobry pacing, zawartości nie było ani za dużo ani za mało, bohaterowie zagrali przekonywująco i na odpowiednio wysokim poziomie. Tak jak często narzekam na teatralny styl Japońskich aktorów, tak tutaj pasuje idealnie do tego idealistycznego pojmowania honoru i powagi. Widać to już od pierwszych scen na przykładzie żołnierzy, dowódców, kobiet. Jak to powiedział jeden z bohaterów - "Miliony tych ludzi pragnie podetrzeć Lordowi Toranadze dupę po wizycie w toalecie". A wobec Cesarza i tytułowego Shōgun są jeszcze bardziej czołobitni. Zamiast opowiadać, to po prostu to pokażę. Przykład co prawda pochodzi z anime oraz tyczy się Chin, ale Epoka Trzech Królestw wywarła gigantyczny wpływ na państwowość i kulturę Chin i Japonii. Mimo że od wieków Japończycy ich nie lubią i swego czasu nazywali ich "psami z bagien". W sumie nie zdziwiłbym się, gdyby nadal tak o nich mówili, biorąc pod uwagę ich rasizm. Cesarz i Shōgun byli Bogami dla wszystkich mieszkańców tych państw.
Komu polecam ten serial? Absolutnie wszystkim. Oglądałem ten serial ze swoją dziewczyną, która jako dziecko oglądała dość dużo filmów z Azji (i w sumie dziś też lubi obejrzeć sobie Azjatyckie seriale, które pojawiają się czasem na streamingu). Zazwyczaj marudzi, jak oglądamy jakiś nowy serial, ale ten jej się wyjątkowo podobał. Są tu zarówno wątki dla mężczyzn, jak i dla kobiet, mniej więcej po równo. Tak samo w kwestii bohaterek. Co prawda póki co poznaliśmy tylko jedną kobietę, która zapewne będzie pełnić jedną z ważniejszych ról, ale już teraz zrobiła na mnie wrażenie. Tak się pisze kobiety z silnym charakterem! Bardzo mi się podobało wprowadzenie jej do historii oraz rozłożenie "okruszków", które potem będą procentować. A przynajmniej mam taką nadzieję. Fanom anime również polecam. To taki Kingdom Live Action. Dyplomacja z pierwszego odcinka była znakomita. Wyborna wręcz! Dwa razy klaskałem widząc kunszt tych dialogów - świetnie napisane, wierne faktom i sferze politycznej. Cudna erystyka z obu stron! Cudowny pokaz jak obrzucić kogoś wyzwiskami i wulgaryzmami, które sprawiają wrażenie miłych słów. Wiedza którą być może nabyliście, oglądając anime i czytając mangi, zaprocentuje w tym serialu.
No i jest to dzieło dla miłośników dobrego kina. Co rozumiem poprzez "dobre kino"? Wartką akcję, jak najlepszą realizację materiału źródłowego, oddanie realiów czasowych, kulturowych lub innych, istotnych dla danego dzieła. No i przede wszystkim musi się to przyjemnie oglądać. Poza tym doświadczonych aktorów oraz takich samych reżyserów i scenarzystów, którzy wiedzą co robią. Parę razy wydawało mi się, że widziałem kimono (jeśli mylę ich odświętne stroje, wybaczcie. Nie jestem biegły w tym temacie, a wiem że te "suknie" mają różne nazwy.), które trochę trąciły sztucznością, ale nie były to istotne sceny. No i umówmy się, przy skali oddania Japonii, takie rzeczy to drobne detale. Nikt nie będzie wydawał więcej pieniędzy niż potrzeba na scenografię. Zresztą, w najlepszych serialach HBO, które często polecam (np. Boardwalk Empire) też się zdarzały takie drobiazgi. Oglądając Shōgun, widzieliśmy wraz z Asią sceny z gry Ghost of Tsushima (jak macie PS5 i będziecie chcieli trochę dłużej i bardziej, bo głębiej, posiedzieć w tym świecie, to polecam kupić!). Zatem macie też piękne widoki. Serial ma mieć 10 odcinków. Dajcie znać, jak się Wam podobał.
I´m very happy to read this post, for a moment I though I was almost alone here admiring this novel. I have read the book and I strongly recomend it. Yes XVII century Japanese culture was very different from western culture at the time. I wouldn´t say worse or better but definetely very different.
It is a very complex and well developed novel, I´m yet to see the new series (hope to do so tonight) but I expect a very good product and your post has convinced me that it will be, thanks for that.
The lady you have met in the show it most probably be Toda Mariko Sama, and It will indeen play a very relevant role in the show. Althoung, its not the only strong women in the novel. I´m personally very fond of Fuyiko as well, although it plays a much smaller role in the novel. But it is also an outstanding character.

Like you say, it's different + it's complex, so it's a mistake to simplify it. While I can understand some things, I can't understand others (e.g. patriarchy, which is only gradually changing today. During World War II, the Japanese sent their daughters to the front with a smile on their faces. Not to mention their kamikaze sons), this was my criticism.

I´m Also sorry If somehow I make you feel like I was trying to say you were criticizing the japanese culture, I was not trying to. I was just stating my thoughts about how different our culture were and still are. There are of course things that I don´t share either. But since we came from a very different cultural background and time its almost impossible for us to understand the moral structure and why they did things that way. For instance their relationship with dead and honor its far different than ours. And that change everything with regard to the samurai-daimio relationship and also regarding to the kamikaze. But if we look closer the differences in this are more about form than content. Cuz we westerns also send our sons to war knowing that many of them won´t return. Western generals ofthen have to sacrifice soldiers in battle for the sake of the strategy. The examples are severals.

I will definitely read the book. I've heard a lot of good things about her throughout my life. My knowledge of Japan is not exactly ranked, but I know quite a lot. I think it's above average, so I can see without much difficulty what's real, what's not, and what might be real. I see that the author of the book has earned his nickname "Best-seller" or something like that, it refers to the fact that each of his publications is a hit. This can also be seen in the female characters, who had fewer opportunities to act than men, but they move very well in this world.
Hey, no worries, real life can be complicated. I really know litle about Japan, but their culture has always facinated me. I can tell you that the author was a prisioner of war in Japan during WWII and aftherwards he move to Japan for quite some time. So I imagine he knew well the culture and the people.
Mate, I know a little about Japan (also not much, but I'm less modest, I guess :P) and you can see that it fascinated you. You see the nuances too well and that cultural differences are not that simple. Yep, it's true - you learn quickly in such places. I have heard many stories about American soldiers captured by the Japanese. I don't envy it, it's terrible.

Serial serdecznie polecam, bo jest profesjonalnie zrobiony i po prostu ciekawy, a do tego przedstawia tematykę, której na netfliksie czy HBO nie znajdziemy. A przede wszystkim jest dobrym treningiem w rozpoznawaniu subtelnej propagandy robionej przez zdolnych, wysoce inteligentnych ludzi — zresztą z tego względu wywołał duże zamieszanie w obszarze postsowieckim, przede wszystkim na Ukrainie i w samej Federacji, zwłaszcza w autonomicznym Tatarstanie. Polecam wyszukanie polskiego tytułu w ulubionej wyszukiwarce, jest kilka artykułów napisanych przez rodzimych autorów, które dosyć dokładnie opisują kontekst powstania serialu (choć trzeba być ostrożnym i skonfrontować ich opinie np. z rosyjską wikipedią, ale to jak zawsze).
Na zachętę wklejam amatorski wideoklip z scenami z serialu i lejtmotywem, który leci co najmniej dwa razy na odcinek hehe
