Somali Republic Silver Coin & A Chai Latte

Somali Silver and a Chai Latte.png

This Is Sort Of An Art Show and Silver Show Again ..

Sure, I have some Silver to show and fresh chai latte made and ready to drink, but I also have a cool mug to show you as well. A cool mug that I made 13 years ago! Yeah.. I made it! I made this cobalt blue stoneware mug back in 2009 when our friends owned and ran a pottery company that made handmade wares. On occasion we would stop in and they would allow us to make something. On one of those trip to the factory, I made this here FINE LOOKING mug (haha).

The Silver ..

Then today came and I decided on a chai latte instead of a second cup of afternoon coffee. I got to thinking that it would be nice to photograph todays silver piece next to the handmade mug. So today you get a little Somali Silver, a little DIY art, and I get to drink a fresh cup of chai latte on a much needed break from the grind.

A 2021 Somali Republic 100 Shillings African Wildlife Elephant 1 oz .9999 Silver Coin ..

Wow.. That was a long description, but very inclusive. I am in love with this coin I think. My heart seems to flutter a little whenever I look at it.. hehe.. maybe that is over dramatic, but it's really a nicely designed coin. The elephant is definitely a show stopper elemental piece. The details in it are wonderful. I like the mix of matte and buffed areas.

If I had one complaint about this coin, it would be the bird flying just above the elephants head. Maybe if there were more than one it wouldn't look so out of place. Otherwise the Bavarian State Mint put out a nice piece here. I think I see an Acacia tree just off to the left side of the elephant. Small but nice they fit that in there.

IMG_5028.JPG

On the Obverse is the Somalian Coat of Arms .. the date of mint (2021) and the denomination as listed 100 Shillings. I really like how the coat of arms is displayed large and takes up quite a bit of real estate on that side. This is a BU coin, so it has a nice luster to it and very few if any milk spots. Did I ever tell you I have grown to hate milk spots!?

IMG_5027.JPG

The Edge.. Hard to see inside the coin case, but I think it's still visible enough. The favored reeded edge! Well, favored by me at least. It's okay to disagree with me.

Time To Get Back To This Latte!

The mug holds about 10 ounces of coffee or tea, when full, and when empty it can hold at a bare minimum, 1 Somali Silver piece. hahaha.. Today at least, because that's all I have to put in there. It would be nice if it was full to the brim with these elephant coins, but I have to earn some more fiat before I can reach that goal.

Dang! I Don't Know What Looks Better In There..

Coffee

Or Silver?

The silver looks good, but I can tell you out of experience that the coffee tastes better.

Thanks for showing & sharing, BDMiller - @bdmillergallery. They are some of my favorites. Have you any information, on their final mintage numbers? I haven't seen any information since around 2014. Like it is a secret, or something. Early years, only 5,000 minted, per year. Denomination was 1,000 Shillings. Only .999 pure Silver. Different Elephants each year.

I don't have any info on that. Not sure why they keep it a secret unless they plan on releasing more of them depending on demand. I know some mints do that especially with real currency coins. I remember the years they only minted low numbers and you had to be super fast to pick them up before they were gone.

Lot's of cool stuff there. I would have to agree on the bird over the elephants head. Maybe if they had just placed it a bit off center or something. My wife and I are big fans of Chai tea. They have some powdered stuff in a tin at Sam's club that we really enjoy. I was doing some cleaning the other day and I found an old coin in my stuff. I have no clue where I got it from and I don't even know what it is. I mean based on the writing it is pretty clear where it is from, but again, I have no clue how it came into my possession.

I thought about writing a post about it, but I have so little info, it would likely just end up being a crap post. Plus it isn't silver or gold as far as I can tell.

Hey! That's a cool coin. 1880 Hong Kong One Cent maybe bronze. Let me see If I can find something.

Here's a link to Numista. I like using their site for the odd and foreign. At least it's a starting point, then you can google for the rest.

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces5657.html

😁 Chai Is GOOOOooooooooooood yum

Very cool. Doesn't look like it is worth much, but I think it is cool just how old it is. Might be the oldest thing I own!

$15 to $20+ isn't bad for a foreign bronze coin. Looks like there are a few out there on Ebay. The Silver and Gold ones fetch a pretty penny though.. oh well, keep looking. Maybe you have one of those! hehe. I know I don't have one 😌

Haha, yeah maybe. I wonder if I cleaned this one up it is nice and shiny underneath!

I wouldn’t clean it too much. Probably worth more unclean than clean. People who buy those kind of coins like them in the aged condition. Sometimes when you clean them you risk scratching them and that devalues those types of coins. Really any kind of coin.

That makes sense. I was kidding anyway. I doubt there is any gold or silver buried under there!

Nice one! I love how you displayed it with some coffee! Very creative!

I wish my next coin would arrive, but our post office main depot has "attempted" to deliver it 5 days ago and said they couldn't enter the building. Never rang the bell though and now it's stuck. Waiting impatiently to write my next silver coin post :)

Have seen several cool ones with animals, this one is defo a nice one!

Just write a post about waiting for it. That's quite acceptable given the circumstances. I see people write 50 word posts about the price of silver and how the market is treating it, so I think your cool with a delayed silver post. I would actually find it entertaining 😁

Thank you for the compliments! I am smiling now 😊

Yeah I truly admire people that see special ways to photograph things, It would have never crossed my mind doing that with a silver coin, but now you made me think about a way to display mine lol.

Maybe I will do that if I order another one so I can combine them in one post, I'm not really the person to write a 50 word post lol. And what do I write when it arrives :)

Go For IT! I am always looking for other ways to make my posts more interesting, so art and stuff works for me. @silversaver uses maps and trinket boxes while @kerrislravenhill uses ALL SORTS of items to display hers.

Yes.. I can't post a 50 or even 100 word post. I just can't do it. Some people post a 15 word post and get the appreciator or upmewhale vote for it. Pisses me off when lots of others pour a lot of time and effort into quality. Oh well. I'm just one voice.

Hope your coin arrives soon! Until then, just dream about how beautiful it will be when it finally does 😁

I love that series. I stopped buying it though. I have the entire collection from the beginning plus the one error coin.

You are the Series King I think.. You made some good plays along the way. There is SO MUCH out there, that one has to stop buying something to buy something else. We can't buy it all.. Or can we? lol

I’ve changed my approach to stacking and collecting. I sold off my entire kookaburra, koala, pandas and lunar series two which were all complete at the time. Changed it all to just silver weight in ten ounce bars. LCS’s don’t pay you what they are worth. I did a whole experiment last summer on it. So I made a choice to sell. Now I pretty much do generic silver. I collect still but it’s all true numismatic coins that are graded. Nothing modern

That’s a good approach. My approach is all over the place right now I’m just building my stack and having a little fun at the same time. I almost feel like I’m up behind the line and just behind in general when it comes to stacking. I’ll do what I can and the time I have. That’s all. Sounds like he made some smart decisions though.

It seems like every so often I reevaluate my stack. I’m not old old but I’m not young either. I’m kinda looking out for my daughter when she sells it. To get the most she can without knowledge of it. She has no interest in stacking at all.
It’s a journey over your life. You will probably do the same thing at some point.

Now that makes sense to me. And your probably right. I tend to reevaluate all aspects of my life and processes, so I would imagine that area would be no different. Thanks for the advice.. always ☺️

Very smart. Priorities change, lifestyles change, the world changes. Every once in a while you got to take a step back and access the situation.
I actually hoping for one of two things. For silver to got nuts again and hit $50 an ounce. Or the gold to silver ratio to get to under 40-1. Gold is more stable and much easier to sell and store.

Sweet!
I love the Elephants.
They have not repeated a design yet!
Why not buy the recent ones? They'd be less in premium.
Kookaburra, Koala, Elephants, Pandas, to name some, tend to gain premiums as years go by.

Good Idea! I could fill my cup with them and call it a success. 😁 I like the way you think Lady SilverSaver!
