Hello and welcome to the The Ink Well weekly fiction prompt. The Ink Well is a Hive blockchain-based social media community of creative writers. If you love to write short stories, we invite you to join us. Or peruse the work of our community members.

Note: We always launch our prompt posts with important information. So be sure to check it out first! Then we invite you to read on and see what we have in store for this week's prompt.

The January Collaboration with DreemPort Continues!

In case you hadn't heard, DreemPort selected The Ink Well for a community spotlight for the month of January. This is week 3! For details, be sure to see our newsletter and the DreemPort Challenge Announcement.

If you choose to participate, you can publish your story for this week's prompt in The Ink Well as usual, then post it on DreemPort and curate others to earn DreemPort tokens. The day to post your story on DreemPort is Thursday.

Congratulations to last week's DreemPort winners, announced here:

Important FAQs about The Ink Well!

Here are answers to some Frequently Asked Questions about The Ink Well.

What Is The Ink Well All About?

The Ink Well is a short story community. This means we only accept short fiction. (Fiction means stories that came from your imagination, not from real life.)

It also means:

  • No novels, chapter stories or multi-part stories
  • No poems
  • No introduction posts
  • No essays or other non-fiction
  • No memes

Just fictional short stories!

The Ink Well is all about creativity, quality, community, and engagement. As such, we ask the following:

  • Please take the time to get to know the community and read other writers' work. Everyone who posts in The Ink Well is expected to read and comment on at least two other stories for each piece you post.
  • See our catalog of fiction writing tips and make use of our resources. (Many of our writers are developing awesome skills, and you can too!)
  • Put effort into your posts. Review and edit your content for errors before publishing.

What are the community rules?

You can find our community rules at the top of The Ink Well community (right side of the page).

Please read the rules before posting in The Ink Well, as we outline the "do's and don'ts." If you can't find them, you can read them here.

Our community rules are designed to make our community a safe, welcoming, plagiarism-free space for self-publishing original short stories.

What does it take to get rewards in The Ink Well??

We refer you to the above description of what The Ink Well is about. If you are not getting great rewards, it is likely for one of the following reasons:

  • Your story has many grammatical errors. (This is easily fixed with the tips in our post, Help for the Grammatically Challenged.)
  • Your story lacks some important elements of good fiction, such as character development, dialog, scene details or a story arc. (See our catalog of fiction writing tips for information on these important aspects of short stories.)
  • Your story appears to be a retelling of an old folk tale. There's nothing wrong with folk tales, but here in The Ink Well, we are looking for 100% original fiction. We want to see fresh new stories from your imagination, not age-old stories with well-worn themes, or worse — plagiarism (which will get you banned from the community).

Okay! Let's review fiction entries from last week's prompt and launch a new one.

Stories From the Previous Week

Thank you to everyone who posted a story for last week's prompt, “Inheritance."

We really enjoyed reading stories about inheritance, and the many things people do — some wonderfun and some devious — when it comes to handling money and property. Thank you, everyone!

Here are the week's stories. Be sure to read and support these authors for their work.

Well done, everyone!

This Week’s Prompt

At last, the prompt of the week!

This week's prompt is: By the light of the moon.

What happens by moonlight? We hope your story will tell us!

Moonlight can be secretive, romantic, or inspiring. It can make a child dream of a trip to outer space, give someone the perfect opportunity to propose marriage, or provide just enough light for a burglar to sneak around a building.

... or any another possibility that comes to mind.

We hope that will get your imaginations started! We look forward to reading your stories. Remember to participate in the DreemPort challenge, if you are so inclined!

Note: As always, please avoid gory, bloody, brutal, sexist or racist themes and language, erotica and other NSFW (not safe for work) content, and stories featuring abuse of women, children or animals.

If you don't feel inspired by this prompt or the featured image, feel free to peruse any of our past prompts or our collection of idea-generators:

Weekly Prompt Rules:

  1. Deadline: You have a week to write for the prompt, until the next one is posted. (Note: You can write for any of the prompts anytime. This is just a guideline to be included in the weekly round-up in the next prompt post.)
  2. Story link: Post your story in The Ink Well community, and post a link to your story in a comment on this post.
  3. Hashtags: Please use these hashtags: #fiction #writing #inkwellprompt #theinkwell and #dreemport, if you are also posting your story to the DreemPort site.
  4. COMMUNITY SUPPORT: Visit the work of at least two other community members and comment on their work.
  5. Title: The title is up to you. You can come up with any title you wish. You do not need to name it after the prompt or include the prompt word.
  6. Images: Please only use images from license free and creative commons sites, like Pixabay, Unsplash and Pexels. Images you find on the Internet are copyright protected and cannot be used. Be sure to provide the source link.
  7. Length: We request that story word counts are a maximum of 1,500 words maximum length (preferably 750-1000 words). This is just a guideline. Longer stories tend to get fewer readers. Additionally, The Ink Well admins appreciate keeping to that maximum story length for our time management!

Reminder: Be sure to also read our community rules. The reason for the repeat reminder is that we see many stories describing brutality of women, children, or animals, or that have excessive gore or violence, and we must mute them. Please do not post these stories in The Ink Well. We want our community to be a safe and comfortable place for all readers.

Here are the past prompts if you would like to use them or refer back to them:

Fab prompt for a short story fiction🙌 Now I am going to call out some friends from POB-WOTW to see if they would like to come and join in the Inkwell-Dreemport Challenge and enter a short story this week in the Inkwell Community and drop their URL into Dreemport for extra eyes on their content. WOTW is not starting up again until February earliest and this would be a great way to get going again if they aren't already actively writing. And who knows they may like it enough to stay and play week in week out alongside WOTW 🤗😉 So I'm looking to @scholaris, @nonsowrites, @calumam, @alekst7, @mineopoly, @diebitch, @kevinnag58, @erh.germany, @bobthebuilder2, @fragozar01, @savagetobi, @vikbuddy, @ajorundon, @timmypat, @sam108, @iamhafix, @funshee, @corporateay ( and maybe @flamistan you would like to come up with a dawg's perspective ...I'm sure you, or a distant relative, have a moon tale to be told hehe). Please come and play. I'd love to see your quality writing in the Inkwell community and also dropped into Dreemport this Thurday! All details are in this post which includes links to the Dreemport Challenge post which shows you how to register on Dreemport and what to do. It is all an easy process, a great collaboration, and loads of fun. Drop me a comment if you fancy playing along and I'll be sure to look out for your post and be available to help you get set up in Dreemport if you struggle...although it's super simple and quick to do :-)

I didn't think I'd find the time, but I did... https://www.proofofbrain.blog/hive-170798/@bobthebuilder2/i-can-see-clearly-what enjoy... lol

I also read and commented on 3 other folks' posts...for what it's worth. I can find who I posted on if it is necessary for the entry :)

Thank you! No, some people like to list the authors they've read in their comments on the prompt post, but it's not required. Thanks for joining us, @bobthebuilder2, and welcome!

Fab! Don't forget to drop the URL into Dreemport tomorrow. Registration takes about 2 minutes, then read your 5 assigned posts and rank them and drop in your post. We'd love to see it in there. Ask me or @liftslikealady for help if you need it hehe. Thank you for your support❣️ I hope you see the benefit and joy in posting in the Inkwell and Dreemport like I do.

How do I drop it in Dreemport? Is that another frontend? there are so many!!

Not a front end...it is a separate site because we have a unique way of ranking and rating posts that kinda goes outside the realm of Hive

As a matter of fact . Any blogger on any platform (even their own personal blog) can drop links to share with anyone who visits DreemPort!

Here is a step by step guide!

https://peakd.com/hive-150329/@dreemport/how-do-i-use-dreemport-its-easy-

And you don't have to wait for email verification...just start using it! Hehehehe

You don't ONLY have to use it for challenge days!

You can use it Monday through Friday to get more eyes on your work and. Also to meet others outside of your normal circles!

How to use DreemPort

If you have any questions...feel free to comment and tag me!

I'm heading to bed now but will check tomorrow hehehe

I went on the site and kinda walked my way through before seeing this comment. I think I did it right. I curated 5 posts, voted, submitted my post, and did a survey...also need to go to bed :) Thanks!

@bobthebuilder2 I can see your post in Dreemport. Mission accomplished 🙂 It will get screened through later today for public curation tomorrow 😎 I'm looking forward to reading your submission.

Can we hire you as our marketing rep, @samsmith1971? Hee hee. You're a natural!

haha... I just enjoy promoting things that I love❣️

Thanks for the mention, Sam, I see if I can make it and the muse kisses me :)

We'd love to see your Inkwell entry in Dreemport @erh.germany ♥️

♥️- I don't know if I can make it. I was overly busy and concentrated on my newest blog post (among other things), which cost me almost a weeks work. Now I am a bit drained by all the computer work. Wish me good luck to recover from it :9) lol.

I completely hear you, I didn't get to do all that I wanted to achieve this week either...but then I'm not sure I ever do !LOLZ. I have learned to just let things flow... and not feel obligated. I do my best to get around the blockchain myself but if some things don't happen, and let's face it, we are all one person alone hehe, then I just shift them along in my diary😊 catch you another time @erh.germany. Hope you get some R&R away from the screen xx

I threw a boomarang a few years ago that never came back.
I now live in constant fear.

@erh.germany, I sent you an $LOLZ on behalf of @samsmith1971
Use the !LOL or !LOLZ command to share a joke and an $LOLZ. (1/4)

i will give it a shot... thanks for the mention.

Awesome Nonso, I look forward to seeing your entry. It must be dropped into both the Inkwell and Dreemport to count for the Challenge. Shout if you need any further guidance after reading and watching @dreemsteem's post❣️ And get @blezyn involved too hehe

Thank you for the tag @samsmith1971, I should hump in and join this challenge.

Fab @funshee, shout if you need any help with requirements❣️

I will surely do if I need help, thank-you🥰🤗

It's a good idea calling out to those writers to come join the wotw. I'm sure @scholaris has been busy lately but will join this train....

Thanks @cool08... I didn't tag everyone and also left out the ones already involved in Dreemport hehe as they are already here :-)

Ha, that explains why I didn't get a tag..... I was beginning to get jealous... Lol 😂😂

haha yes and we had already chatted about the challenge hehe

Yes, we did. I have my entry up already, I'll submit tomorrow for the challenge. 🙃

YAY! I saw the notification hehe...I'll read them all Thursday/Friday. Goodluck :-)

Please @inkwell i need guidance on how to post my story on @dreemport, i have tried to post my previous two stories there but i did not get the hang of it.

Thanks for catching that question and helping out @emeka002, @shadowspub!

This is a good topic to write on. I will submit my write up soon.

I have a story that is upto 1900 words that is based on this prompt word which I just prepared yesterday, can I still post it in the community or it is too lengthy?

It's fine, @cool08. I think you already did post it. But I just wanted to let you know that we prefer stories to be shorter in order to manage our time, but it's not a "rule." It's a wish and a guideline. :-)

This is an awesome prompt.. Like you said, so many things can happen under the moonlight.. We just have to think outside the box and be creative. Lets see how this particular one will go. I promise to abide by the rules. I hope to come out with a great piece.

Thank you, @davidbright! :-)

Nice one. Congratulations to the winners and it time to starting drafting

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with, @abdul-qudus.

Wow, congratulations to those selected, I hope to participate in this new contest.

Great! We hope you do, @carlynn.

A moon related prompt seems like a nice way to start the year for me. 😁

Great! We've missed you @juanvegetarian.

Hey, @jayna. I missed writing for The Ink Well prompts. 😁

Here's my entry for this prompt:

I have read and engaged with more than 5 authors in the community today and still reading more :)

Aha!!😃... I've already have this drafted somewhere. Made it up in my head on a rainy day.

How wonderful! The moon always inspires me too, @deraaa.

I rather enjoyed that @mrenglish put thought into the colour of the moon. This was something that I hadn't even given a thought to. @milezofplay also did a wonderful job, opening her piece with poetic thoughts - to find a story in the soul! Delicious!

Thanks for your entry. Probably because you have more work to do, the name with my story"Fake Documents and Punishment for Forgery" is spelled Phantom 007 while it is Phantom 22.
kindly change.

Sorry about that, @fantom22! We've fixed that, at last.

It was a great prompt! I just published my new story about the new prompt of #moonlight.

Here I come participating again. Here's my entry:

With the way new people are trying out the prompt, I think we would have lots of entries on this one, which would be really funSeeing different perspectives on this.

Check out mine..WAR FOR PEACE

Commented in other entries as well

Thank you for this great prompt. This is entry.
