Introduction

The lack of access to clean drinking water remains a challenge in Ghana and many areas of the world. In rural Ghanaian villages, women and children frequently walk for hours - sometimes multiple kilometers in search of clean drinking water. More often than not, the water they find is not safe and puts their families at serious health risks.

This issue does not only affect health but also affects education and economic activities. Children get sent home from school and lose valuable class time, and families spend countless hours utilizing energy to meet this most basic need of life. The knock-on effect of this is extensive and deeply felt across all aspects of life in these communities.

I identified this as a major challenge in Ghana and I knew I needed to do something about it. This wasn't a challenge of convenience, this was a challenge of survival and human dignity and rights. Clean water is a necessity, not a luxury, and I was determined to do something about this challenge for the most vulnerable people in my country.

The Beginning of a Vision

My name is Sam (@mcsamm), I am a young Ghanaian and blockchain advocate who believes in the impact of technology on human lives. Through my journeys to remote communities around the country, I witnessed people experiencing challenges to access water.

In 2022, I made the choice to intervene. A personally held conviction transformed into a collective vision that would seek to provide clean and safe drinking water to as many people as possible through using technology as an agent for transformative change.

The vision came to fruition with the launch of my first borehole in the Ashanti Region. This borehole was built by the collective effort of many people, driven by some innovative action and now more than 500 people every day have safe water. That was how I felt the start of the journey was something I had to keep going with.

Funding through Hive DAO

At the heart of this journey was Hive, a decentralized blockchain platform that emphasizes community and impact. Hive DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization), provided a new and revolutionary way to crowdfund support for my project without the dependency on any or more traditional funding streams.

Being decentralized allowed me to raise funding through proposals, submitted and voted on by the community, in a transparent way. Most of the time, projects with people and other groups become difficult to receive funding but the Hive blockchain removed bureaucratic hurdles, and allowed us to act more rapidly and more easily. Because this is a time sensitive matter, Hive had an ability to be rapidly fast acting, trusting, and transparent.

Using this system, we have been able to build and transfer online engagement into offline impact. Every vote, and every token, and every action of support, became part of the solution, an action of support that we hoped to achieve and make a reality, Hive has been more than a platform, it is a lifeline.

Real-world Impact

From one borehole in June 2022, the project has expanded to 22 boreholes which are all operational throughout Ghana as of June 2025. The boreholes have provide thousands of people with continuing access to clean drinking water.

The promise to reduction of long days of walking, and drinking unsafe waters is becoming reality, health is improving, school attendance is increasing, and pace of life is significantly & more able to be balanced. The boreholes have returned time, energy and dignity to people.

All communities that received the boreholes also received free health screening and been supplied with education. Hundreds of educational material have been distributed to local school. The reach extends beyond water - to anything that leads to healthy living.

Hive Blockchain and Social Good

This project has shown that blockchains are not simply digital currencies but an entire ecosystem for decentralized applications that can support real life projects, that influence real people, and change the world.

By supporting the borehole construction phases, the Hive blockchain has established itself as a project with purpose - a blockchain with a heartbeat. The project measure what impact has been established and and developed the credibility and corporate responsibility, and not just another online platform.

As more people come to discover what Hive has helped to create in Ghana - people are joining hive blockchain for the right reasons - to connect, cooperate and commit to support change taking shape on the ground.

Appreciation

This mission would not have been possible without the incredible support from the Hive community and real life partners. The hive blockchain is nothing without it software, content and network, curators, donors, and voters - everything done in the blockchain matters.

My heartfelt gratitude to my co-founder @collinz getting me connected, together we have been able to create something beyond infrastructure. We have built hope and empowered next generations. The success and beauty of this would not have survived without the support, direction and guidance of incredible individuals like @valueplan @guiltyparties @theycallmedan @starkerz @blocktrades @threespeak @theycallmedan @gtg @buttcoins @shadowspub @hivetoday @deep.pizza @oflyhigh @smooth @stoodkev @elmerlin @themarkymark @pharesim @alessandrawhite @steevc @ackza @mynewlife @rubencress @hivecreators @solarisfuture @abenad @hive.ghana @lordbutterfly @crimsonclad @offgridlife @missbitcoin-sv @melinda010100 @acidyo on the hive blockchain.

I would also like to thank the local chiefs, community leaders, media houses, and offline supporters who believed in the vision and made the vision of creating lasting change a reality; their trust in our vision, encouragement and desire we build as community was the motivation behind our impact.

The Road Ahead

While we celebrate these achievements, we understand that many more communities are still without water.

Our work is not over, together with additional partnerships, we have elevated our visibility and outreach and continued support from the hive blockchain users and community, we can amplify this mission in every part of Ghana and beyond.

We truly believe, children should not miss school because they have no water, and every community has safe water to thrive. With Hive and the collaborative intention behind it - it is achievable.

The Challenge

This story is a framework and a testemony. It is proof that one platform, one idea, one community can supply clean water, health and health education to underserved population.

We welcome everyone, developers, donors, influencers, change-makers, revolution of hope to share this story, support future proposals and share our mission with the world.

Lets prove together, blockchain can go beyond speculation and be the backbone of humanity. The revolution has begun. Hive is powerful.

When I think of these boreholes, what comes to mind is over thousands of students no more missing school because of water issues. That alone translates to securing the future of the young ones which I believe is a huge achievement on this blockchain. Thumbs up to you and the team. More to come.

Thanks for your continual support in making this successful @abenad .

well done mi querido negro, pray and hope this excellent job is replicated in other needy communities

Yes, the blockchain is powerful to use in many ways.

You’re very welcome. Great work out there.

Thanks many times sir. I really appreciate your support.

I can’t even begin to express how powerful this is. From tech to tap water, that’s not just innovation, that’s humanity in action. Rooting for even more boreholes and more lives touched!

It's a story to tell the world. Help to share @itsmemic

Maybe you could speak to all the people that helped you and ask them to do something about the downvotes by a racist whale 🐳 who you tagged in this post 🤔 along with many others who are part of the biggest farm on Hive 🤔

Colmena.

This is great and awesome, life is water and water is life, so he that provides water gives life.
