Architecture Moments™ 4: The Red Bull Hangar-7

Welcomed by an Icon

Red Bull. Who doesn't recognize this world-famous brand? If you've been an advocate of energy drinks for a long time, you could probably be one of those who have already tasted their invigorating product. Said to have been introduced in 1987, this enterprise has the largest market share for that category on the planet.

During one of my European adventures, I was destined for the Austrian city of Salzburg after my dear kin surprisingly invited me to spend a holiday there. Now, who wouldn't desire to travel to Salzburg, the birthplace of the illustrious 18th-century composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the setting of the famous classic film "The Sound of Music"? Well, you could just imagine the biggest smile on my face when that trip was confirmed. And, my gosh, I was in for a special treat!

Welcome to Episode 4 of Architecture Moments™ as we're thrilled to feature a cherished architectural gem rooted in Austria's most inspiring city: Salzburg. We'll be exploring the Red Bull Hangar-7, the iconic museum and restaurants/lounges that house the remarkable ensemble of historical aircraft from the Flying Bulls plus amazing personal collections from Red Bull founder, entrepreneur, and billionaire himself: Dietrich Mateschitz. So, are you ready?

"Welcome to Salzburg! How was your flight?" was my local host's opening conversation. After responding with delight and embracing them with warm hugs of appreciation, we immediately proceeded to our destination. My jaw dropped the second I saw the landmark's spectacular architecture of glass and steel. Glancing from a distance, the building consisted of a massive dome with 2 towers, and metaphorically, was designed to appear like a futuristic wing.

HANGAR 03.jpg

On the contrary, I perceived it to be like a modern Ladybug, an insect with a round outer shell but with two large antennas on its head. Perhaps, for ordinary spectators, this immense monument might also resemble an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) that just landed at their airport, with an elongated mouth ready to devour the earthlings…lol. Sorry for my wild imagination yet, who knows? - we might have the same interpretation.

HANGAR 04.jpg

Approaching the entrance door of the facility, my feet were rapidly itching to get inside. But wait, let's take a quick look at this outdoor artwork. My best guess would be that it was the incomplete sculpture of the mythical winged horse called Pegasus. I was trying to reach it and feel the rough textures however, it was obviously too high for me.

HANGAR 05.jpg

Since we were at an airport, that artistic piece was presumably a symbolic way to represent the power of flight and the aviation industry as a whole. It was now time to enter the portals to another world.

Mesmerized by Shiny Objects

How would you react to a sight like this?

HANGAR 06.jpg

My emotions were all mixed up at that point and were about to explode but, I merely didn't know which one was the most resonating. Maybe "electrifying" would probably be the most suitable word to describe how I felt that instant.

HANGAR 07.jpg

So many sophisticated "Toys for the Big Boys"! Before my eyes was a vast array of airplanes, helicopters, Formula One racing cars, contraptions, gadgets, and other technological wonders. I could literally smell the scent of polished metal everywhere. Without blinding reflections, the interior illumination had the advantage of the ample transparency of natural lighting, thanks to the clever umbrella of an enormous glass dome that allowed sunlight to pass through and beautifully glorify the gorgeous exhibits within.

And have I told you that some interesting artworks were also installed there? (We're going to look more into that in a bit.) Gliding fast across the grayish tiled floor, my curiosity quickly lured me to a clever gizmo that housed a driver's gaming console.

HANGAR 08.jpg

HANGAR 09.jpg

I'm not an active gamer however, I did enjoy gripping the leathery surface of the steering wheel and stepping on the foot pedals while trying out the racing game. I've previously tried the more advanced versions of driver's gaming setups where you literally move as if you were driving a real vehicle but, this particular console was not one of them. Regardless, it was still a fun experience.

HANGAR 10.jpg

I've never seen a modern helicopter as tiny as this one. Compared to my physical build, this special aircraft would not probably be comfortable enough for me to pilot.

HANGAR 11.jpg

Even this mini-plane looks minuscule and would only accommodate people who have smaller statures. I simply couldn't fly a vehicle of this size compared to the possibility of enjoying a better experience with the largest aircraft on display there, the Douglas DC-6B plane, sporting a rudder around nine meters high.

HANGAR 12.jpg

If you had a playful childhood, the next interesting toy looks like an entertaining gadget to tinker with. If you've been to the circus, theme parks, and mall playgrounds, these are the types of fun rides that children would love to play with, if I'm not mistaken.

HANGAR 13.jpg

HANGAR 14.jpg

HANGAR 15.jpg

This museum was generally dedicated to our heroes in the sky and their respective memorabilia but, primarily on the Flying Bulls. "But who are they?" if you ask. These distinguished individuals are a gang of passionate aviation advocates who have strong interests in rare and historic airplanes, helicopters, and other collectible vehicles and gadgets for flying purposes. Not only do they indulge seriously in this professional hobby, but, they also had a direct influence on the fruition of Hangar-7.

HANGAR 16.jpg

That's a flying suit, by the way. It was invented especially for the extreme sport of Wing Suit Flying. Wouldn't that be an exhilarating and adrenaline-pounding experience to master freedom on the skies? If you're a skydiver, that would be the perfect one to go for.

HANGAR 17.jpg

HANGAR 18.jpg

HANGAR 19.jpg

All these and more were eagerly waiting to be discovered at Hangar-7 for me to fully experience. All of these marvels of technology must have cost so much yet, aside from the price, the sentimental values and historical heritage of the collections are what truly count.

Walking further into the other interior spaces of the museum, I couldn't help but notice the impressive architecture and interior design that this marvelous landmark had to offer.

Impressed by Exquisite Art and Architecture

Hangar-7 was designed by renowned architect Volkmar Burgstaller and completed in 2003. He certainly knew the sophisticated tastes of the museum's owner thus he ensured to meticulously craft the entire building in such a way that it would offer a classy, elegant, and inspiring atmosphere for all its visitors and guests. Furthermore, he also made sure that the entire space would associate with the Flying Bulls by evoking the feeling of flying in visitors through the openness of the interior and its continuation to the skies outside that were achieved by the transparent glass enclosure. A truly ingenious concept!

Are you also aware that this museum not only housed a premier exhibition space but also incorporated a stylish bar, a relaxing lounge, and a Michelin-starred restaurant called Ikarus?

HANGAR 20.jpg

This exotic place was absolutely a massive feast for the senses! From being entertained, being served with warm hospitality, and being educated, what more could you ask? However, we're not done yet.

HANGAR 21.jpg

If you wish, being serenaded as well by interior piped-in tunes plus the sweet sounds of the grand piano while enjoying the surroundings is surely an added bonus. With beautifully soothing music for my ears, I could linger there forever!

HANGAR 22.jpg

HANGAR 23.jpg

It's difficult not to miss the abundance of vividly colorful paintings, sculptures, and artworks that adorn the winding galleries in its spacious interior. You really needed to dedicate enough time to be able to savor each one. Now, look at me staring blankly at the floor with that silly pose for the camera - what could have been on my mind at that moment? Never mind, I forgot…haha.

HANGAR 24.jpg

Aren't they adorable? Seems like these beautiful kids were having a field trip with their teachers. They were situated on the upper tier of the museum and were easily accessed through a curving ramp and footbridge from the ground level.

HANGAR 25.jpg

That dude looks like the alien warrior from the movie "Predators (2010)", remember? If this was his actual height, there was no way I could have defeated him in that film.

HANGAR 26.jpg

And of course, they also exhibited the metal sculptures of our favorite bulls. They appeared like they were molded in bronze based on their apparent color. Don't worry, they were harmless while watching over me reading a book.

HANGAR 27.jpg

HANGAR 28.jpg

Moving to other spots around the museum, the interesting sight of the rotating steel walkways caught my attention. So I stationed myself at a specific point where I could see everything in its magnificent splendor. From that perspective, you could have a panoramic view of the entire collection being covered by its divine canopy, a heavenly symbol of the elaborate assembly of glass and steel hovering above them. And at its central peak was the innovative lounge called Threesixty Bar which can only be accessed through a winding footbridge from the ground floor. Wouldn't you want to chill out in a fabulous manner from that vantage point with spectacular bird's eye views of the entire building? Take a look at the close-up of that remarkable elevated platform. Amazing, isn’t it?

HANGAR 29.jpg

I'd advise you to spend at least 3 hours (the more time, the better) there to be able to digest all the marvelous offerings this museum had to reveal.

HANGAR 30.jpg

HANGAR 31.jpg

Moreover, there were also interesting pieces of furniture there displayed as sculptural artworks. I believe they were created out of wood and contributed to the warm atmosphere in the space.

HANGAR 32.jpg

HANGAR 33.jpg

HANGAR 34.jpg

And while so much thought and careful planning were given to the architectural design details of the main exhibition area of the building, they didn't take for granted the auxiliary zones like public toilets and hallways. Every significant element of interior design was accounted for to complete the visitor's total enjoyment.

Influenced by a Celebrated Landmark

I consider myself blessed to have been introduced to this valuable treasure of architecture. Not even having wandered outside the airport of Salzburg yet, this memorable journey was one of the best first impressions I had of this famous destination.

HANGAR 35.jpg

Stimulating, sensual, and insightful would be the three most appropriate adjectives I'd use in describing my overall experience at the Red Bull Hangar-7. It's definitely one of the few places in the world that have smartly combined architecture, art, cuisine, and learning into one fantastic activity. This prestigious landmark is a must-visit oasis in case you'll be traveling to Salzburg in the future. I promise you, no regrets!

#Hive, what can you say about the Red Bull Hangar-7? Let me know in the comments.

I want to hang out at that hangar. It seems super cool and exciting. The modern canopy with all that complicated truss is one to look at. Red bull indeed gives us wings though :p
Every nook of that place is interesting.
Hope you are enjoying mid week!

When you get the chance, please do chill out in that museum. That spectacular place is an architectural paradise and I'm pretty sure you'll have the time of your life there. Thank you and have a wonderful week @sahiba-rana!

I would love to go there one day soon!

I say yes to that happening soon. 😀

Epic post! I went to Salzburg in 2008 so I missed this. There are lots of beautiful modern architectural structures in Austria. Speaking of "toys for the big boys", I think Yohann will have a great time here as well. The architecture of the Red Bull Hangar-7 captured the adventurous spirit of Red Bull.

Thank you! That's okay Arni. Be sure not to miss this remarkable building the next time you visit Salzburg. Right, Austria also has a huge wealth of architectural treasures that we all can experience from. As for Yohann, being an aviator himself, I'm certain that he'd be fascinated by the numerous "toys for the big boys" at Hangar-7.

If I may ask him. Based on the photos in this post, what has attracted your immediate interest @iamyohann?

I'm definitely more interested by the planes and F1s than the hangar architecture... hehehe

I'm not surprised, and you'll surely feel at home there, hehe.

Hello hello I love your smile you look happy, you remind me of my husband watching motorcycles and cars hehe, I would also be delighted to know that place so sunny and shiny, well now I would be happy seeing any place, we have reduced mobility and to Restless and traveling people it becomes very expensive, do not leave that smile haha
good day

Smiles are contagious, no doubt about that...haha. And I'm glad you've been affected by mine - to the extent of remembering your loved ones...hehe. The Red Bull Hangar-7 is definitely a happy place, filled with sunshine and wonderful experiences! When the chance arises, go and visit this remarkable landmark in Salzburg. It will surely brighten up your day! Take care friend!

It’s a magnificent structure! I am jealous not yet been there 😄
Thank you for sharing it with us..

Yes, it is @razack-pulo! No need to pressure yourself but you can make the Red Bull Hangar-7 your first priority the moment you land in Salzburg next time. You're welcome and be safe!

Oh wow, impressive air port and impressive post too. How great is that Red Bull hanger.

I want to head across there just to see this

Many thanks for the appreciation! The Red Bull Hangar-7 is absolutely a one-of-a-kind experience and is a must-visit landmark for travelers to Salzburg. You'll not regret it.

wow-wow @storyoferne
This is world architecture, and it is a very amazing aerial architecture and it looks like you really enjoy that atmosphere.

the sculpted furniture was truly magnificent and it was so unique.

thank you @storyoferne for sharing this amazing architecture and I hope you are always healthy there.

Thank you @deltasteem. The Red Bull Hangar-7 is definitely a world-class work of architecture! I'm also happy you were fascinated by the sculpted wooden furniture in that museum. Do you think it's possible to craft something like that in your furniture shop?

extraordinary!.
for the engraving process like that I don't have enough skills, but if I have the opportunity later I will try it.

because the art of wood carving architecture is amazing😉

By the way, if I may, I know how much that one plane costs ..

Oh wow! That's great to know that you could possibly do that with enough skills. It would definitely be a wonderful future project for you. As for the price of one plane, I really don't know. But you could contact the plane manufacturers directly for that matter. All the best to your work at the furniture shop!

There is not the slightest doubt that this is a work of art, this is where I say and insist that the Architect is a plastic artist who builds from tangible pieces spaces that are inhabited by human beings for their comfort. This is a monumental work that is almost unseen here in Latin America. I would like to have the opportunity to visit Hangar-7 sometime, it is evident from the photographs that it was a great experience.

Greetings dear architect

Thanks a lot, @manuelramos! I'm glad you were fascinated by the amazing works of art and architecture at Hangar-7. You're right - this unique project is definitely a one-of-a-kind masterpiece of architecture that can't be found anywhere else in the world. Warm greetings as well, and appreciate your stopping by.

From where to start I don't know, it's stunning. I don't know whether I should call it beauty or beast or beauty in the giant beast. That free-flowing form is everything, that shell structure is gorgeous and yes reminds me of UFO. Inside, hmm I am also shocked to see the gorgeous display by RedBull aircraft and the pattern of the truss. I am sure you have enjoyed exploring this museum a lot... It's always pleasing to experience such kind of astounding free-flowing forms...

That's correct @priyanarc, the experience at the Red Bull Hangar-7 was mesmerizing! The architecture alone of the building is otherworldly and impressive with its curved steel trusses, glass panels, and fluid spaces. Red Bull has absolutely done an excellent job at establishing an iconic museum for their avid fans. I'm glad you didn't find some aliens in the UFO...haha.

Oh ya only humans were there, maybe at night they come and the museum becomes alive, who knows... LOL... yes that was an astounding example of architecture...

Oh yeah probably when it's dark, who knows?...hehe. It's a delight that you were entertained by my post!

Wow thats quite the place! The outside of the building is super cool with all those curves and glass. Looks like there was tons of stuff to see inside as well. Thats my kind of place.

I'm delighted that Hangar-7 has satisfied your tastes and is worthy of being called "your kind of place"! When you get the chance, have a visit anyway, it's just a stone's throw away from France.

Hello friend Erne @storiesoferne I greet you from Venezuela. Congratulations. I loved this journey that you present to us through this post. Excellent photographs. I agree with the phrase of our friend Arni @discoveringarni when she says that: The architecture of the Red Bull Hangar-7 captured the adventurous spirit of Red Bull. Those people are great, they are true artists of the advertising. Thank you friend Erne for showing us this so extraordinary. Infinite blessings for you and your loved ones.

Hola amigo Erne @storiesoferne Te saludo desde Venezuela. Felicitaciones.

Exactly friend Marcos, that building was purposely built for the adventurous spirit of flying! I even have a crazy dream of skydiving one day, and it's just a matter of time. Hopefully, when that moment comes, I.ll be able to gather the courage to do so.

That's true, Red Bull knows their stuff, and are masters at marketing and innovative solutions. Have you tried skydiving before @marcosmilano71?

Hello friend Erne. @storiesoferne Hahahahahaha not crazy hahahahaha I am very afraid of heights, only once have I got on a plane and I almost fainted. My recurring thought is to fall from the top, it is a nightmare for me. The Virgin Mary! NO and NOT hahahahaha when I was doing military service in the Venezuelan Army I did several courses and when I was going to do the parachuting, an event occurred in Venezuela that required suspending it and save me. Thank God! The truth is that I congratulate you my friend and I wish you much success in your adventure of freedom. I will encourage you from here and ask our Creator to bless, care for and protect you in your experience. Take care of yourself, my friend, and thank you for your friendship, support, guidance and for publishing such extraordinary works. Receive a strong virtual hug full of light and many positive energy. Follow after your dreams dear friend!

Hola amigo Erne.

Oh, I see, and that explains it. I never knew you were scared of heights, hahaha. Well, at least you were also spared from falling from the sky with a parachute during your military service days. No worries, you can always take a cruise ship or a submarine to reach your destination. Thanks so much for the encouragement friend Marcos. Take care, virtual hugs, and infinite blessings!

Hello @marcosmilano71, sorry for my really late reply. Just catching up on messages now. I didn't know about your fear of heights and your encounter with the parachute during military service. Sending good wishes your way.

Hi Erne, skydiving in Bantayan? hehe

Let's go Arni! What are we waiting for? hehe 😆

@Hello Arni @discoveringarni Yes, friend, I'm very afraid of heights, I don't like it, it makes me very nervous. I congratulate our friend Erne @storiesoferne for his courage but I would not accompany him on that adventure. Hehehehehe Greetings and blessings.

Jejejejeje Saludos y bendiciones.

Okay "Toys for the Big Boys" Hahaha! That's perfectly true.
I am startled by the interiors, the museum is a must visit for sure. I could feel how much you enjoyed your time there through your post. The music as you mentioned was soothing as such things makes a person psychologically comfortable in the environment.
The Hanger is truly a must visit. The pictures were indeed crazy good.
Keep flourishing

Definitely, @praditya, the exquisite collections at the Red Bull Hangar-7 are the expensive gadgets of those who can only afford them. Hence, "toys for the big boys"...hahaha. When it comes to the experiential aspects of that landmark, it was surprisingly satisfying and I would strongly encourage you to travel there too someday.

If I'm not mistaken, I remember watching a Twitter video of you parasailing. With your adventurous courage, have you also tried skydiving?

I would love to go there someday. You saw it? Wow! yes, actually I had a list to fulfil but I was able to do parasailing, scuba diving and river rafting till now. Covid got so many plans cancelled and work halted so hopefully next year skydiving could be accomplished as well :p

Excellent, you have an adventurous passion indeed! All the best to your pursuit of conquering the fear of skydiving next year, opportunity-permitting. Take care!

Thank you and you too take care!

Indeed. Red Bull’s realization of building Hangar-7 was a commercial success. This would serve as an outstanding brand legacy of art and architecture that many more generations could enjoy. During my visit, it so happened that only a few guests were there thus giving me the opportunity to peacefully experience the treasured exhibits. No doubt, this was one of those that contributed to the atmosphere of happiness.

Thank you! That building absolutely had a direct impact on the big smiles I wore on my face in most of my photos. It was one of my best feel-good moments.
