Where did the time go?

Again, It’s me, a professional ranter.

Just like the title, I’ve been wondering lately where did the time go? I woke up then it’s already evening. I didn’t even get to do many things while I should have been doing a lot.

Ideally.. I like to work 17 to 18 hours a day. That’s only IF things were fine & I can switch my mind back to being a borderline robot. BUT that’s not the case these days. I can not turn on the robot mode in me like it used to.

I’d love to meet fellow workaholics. And if you happen to be one of them, I have a question. Did you ever feel like a failure when you don’t work hard enough?

Though I admit, work-life-balance is fun and I like that. And even with those long hours, I still get them all. But these days, I find myself wanting to have more work and be drowned with work. In fact, If there's an opportunity that makes me work 18-20 hours a day, I’d do that.

However, as much as I wanted to work that long, there are some factors that I find difficult to control, energy. *Perhaps it’s just me getting older and it all hits me all at once? *

Really though, even when my mind wanted to do so many things if the energy wasn't there, it just wasn't there. I have to fix this energy problem very soon or otherwise, I’ll keep wondering where did the time go?

Like today, I woke up, I did some room renovation, went to swim, to the market and only around 10 PM, I feel like I am ready to do some heavy tasks but at the same time because of the surroundings, it makes me sleepy. I used to live in a place where I don’t know if it’s a day/night so that makes it easier to alter my perception of time. However, these days I live in a place with windows that show me it’s dark outside and it’s bright in the morning.

And even when I do those tasks, I feel like I haven’t accomplished something meaningful. While people out there probably do cool stuff. I just had to be satisfied with existing and doing nothing. Maybe one day instead of 24 hours, we get to have 48 hours maybe just maybe, life would even be more fun for people like me who think 24 hours isn’t enough.

Also,

Ideally.. I like to work 17 to 18 hours a day.

I call Bullshit :)
LoL, what type of person likes working that long?😂

In fact, if there's an opportunity that makes me work 18-20 hours a day, I’d do that.

You're nuts! Nuts I tell ya!

Although, if there's a 10 hour break included in those 18-20 hrs, I just might consider working that long :)

Me! I like working and working that long. If I can make more money working that long + keep me from being bored, why not?

It's probably because I don't have a social life and at times, I only want work and work. I usually get tired after 7 months and then choosing the other 4 months partially traveling. Only during that time, I'd like human interaction but after that, I had enough.

Have you ever worked that long?

Oh, I see. Well, if you put it that way... I guess that's kinda understandable.

The conflict here now though, is that if you fancy working 18-20 HOURS a day, you're most likely only going to be getting a mere 4-6 hours of sleep everyday! And that's not nearly as required considering the LUDACRIS amount of work time you've put in!

Me, I'll stick to good old fashioned 5-6 hour work time. Anything above that, makes me cranky and frankly, not fun to be around with.

I m fine with 6 hours sleeping everyday. In fact, it's a stretch. I used to only sleep 2-3 hours or not at all. These days, I can sleep until 8 hours which is crazy to me. But I get it, at some point, we all need sleep. Maybe it's different. Since I also noticed many people are cranky when they work too much and get a little sleep. I just happen to work slightly different than most :'D

Sleep would be most essential regarding all the work you'd be doing.

Indeed you do! I see now that you are a true Workaholic my friend. It has its perks tho.

Although, just for clarity, I'm guessing the type of work you had in mind wasn't one such intense manual labor?

they will definitely be a break

coffee break/bathroom break and that's about it?

I find that I don't need much when I am obsessed about something. There are still 7 hours left.

What did in the past was just maximizing every seconds to do mundane stuff. For food : delivery/simple meals. On top of that, I still workout too, 45 minutes.

I can totally relate. Seems like time is just flying by lately. I was just thinking about this myself.

For me, a lot of it is just the social environment in general. We are living in strange times. It seems like it's just one thing after another. Viruses, wars, economy, supply chain issues, worry, etc... This is FUD on a whole other level.

With that said, I think it wears on our motivation and energy levels. At least for me, I think this is a huge factor. Personally, I just try to snap myself out of it and push forward. Not much else you can do. Slog through, fake it till you make it, and just force myself forward until momentum begins to build and motivation rises again naturally.

Yeah, definitely. We live in strange time where suddenly the virus didn't matter anymore after halting everything for 2 years. It's pure craziness. Now, we suddenly don't have to wear masks, no more tests, while in the past, it was enforced like crazy & so many overreaction to it.

Same tho, I try snapping out of it and just focusing on what I can. I limit my exposure to news these days too.

Do you feel super extremely a hella sleepy on days you swim?

I swim every tuesday and thursday, and Gosh... after 12AM I'm dying.

No, I don't feel sleepy on days I swim. I think it's because I did some heavy workout at the gym, swim and then work? I feel like I can think clearer after swimming.

I swim about 5 times/week included gym too. But maybe that'll change too. Did you swim twice a week only?

Yup, twice a week. But I also train mountain biking on all the other days, so swimming is more like a recovery from the bicycle. Are you swimming only, at pace, or do you also do interval trainings? I find those extremely exhausting -- interval training, high intensity intervals and progressive.

I feel the same way too. So much things to do but my energy drains so fast, get rest for a little while but suddenly the time has passed. Maybe because I'm getting older or because the world rotation is getting faster?

Yeah! that's exactly what happened. I wished to have more time but not sure. Maybe we are all just getting older :D

hello @macchiata
I love all your articles, I've been reading first about minimalism and now I'm reading about time at work. Really here in Latin America you work 9 hours and people complain. Although I think everyone already knows that. But I'm a little strange, lately I enjoy my solitude, and I feel that I'm very behind in EVERYTHING, so I want to learn many things and I spend the day at my computer and I feel that time went fast. I was struck by the phrase you said "if the energy wasn't there, it just wasn't there. "
There is something I understood about energy.
And that is that there must be a balance because we are energy, not if you have heard "disconnect to connect". Or movement moves inertia. Well, I imagine the sport you practice must also help you.

I admire that you like to work.

It sounds like you’re getting into a healthier work life balance and that’s key not only for your mental state by physical as well! Our bodies can’t operate on only 3-4 hours of sleep for long periods of time. You’ll end up dying by the time you’re 40 if you keep that up. Pretty bad for your heart!

Time does go by so damn fast, it’s crazy. It’s already the end of may and I feel like it just started lol
