Pretty Armless

Would you rather do without legs, or one of your arms?

After three years of hip issues (I've fixed them and I am pain free, finally!) I fell off my bike and hurt my elbow. Last week I got an MRI and we're pretty sure there's a fracture there, at least at the time of writing - by the time I go to write this post, I might know for sure, and will add a post script, but it's looking like a the top of the radial bone is fractured. Yup.

I'm trying very, very hard not to be right verily pissed off.

It's been a month of not surfing, not chopping vegies for dinner, and cradling my arm, trying to bring down the inflammation and hoping like hell I didn't fracture it.

This means a longer recovery, just when I really, really was excited about surfing again. I felt strong again and was surfing well - but I could actually surf even with a painful hip, and with this, I can't paddle, so nope, nope, nope.

Another month or two crying. I'm actually quite brave and taking it on the chin, as they say, but some days I have a bit of a meltdown.

So, I keep strengthening my lower body and doing all the right things - vitamin D (apparently I was low, according to blood tests), vitamin C, collagen powder, zinc, calcium. What am I missing? At least I can still swim - breaststroke is okay, freestyle isn't. The other day I swam in my harem pants and a bra because I forgot my bathers and it was lovely in the sunshine. It should not be this warm in the middle of May.

And I can go on long walks again without my hip being in abject pain, and I dont need to worry about a hip replacement or osteoarthritis as that's all been tested and MRI'd and advised and I'm good. I'm a pretty hopeful person, most of the time, and after seeing what Dad went through, and the other things people go through, I'm telling myself it's really not that bad.

Turns out I'd rather have one arm and working legs. I can walk, get out of bed, run from zombies, and it's amazing what I can do with my left hand.

Including slap myself for falling off my stupid bike.

With Love,

I’ve had people tell me that comfrey they have used externally has shorted bone recovery time. Knock wood, not had to try it….

I've been slathering myself in it. Can't say it's helped.

Awww sad to hear about fracture. Honestly, I had a fracture at my foot back then. And just like you, I felt the same way.

I know better things are coming. You will be fine in time. Take care always!

Just legged into hive and the first thing I see is a pair of logs and my brain instantly goes:

But yeah I was going to say “definitely keep the legs” before I even read the post, but the zombie escape logic sealed it.

Seriously though, finally beating the hip pain just to get taken out by a bike is some absurd timing. Hope the elbow heals fast and you’re back surfing soon.

I feel your pain. I fractured my left elbow when I was younger, and I remember that pain very well. Glad to hear the hips are better, though; that's something to be thankful for. At least Jamie can assist with prepping dinners with you supervising.

I bought myself a brand new bike three summers ago. Got on it after not riding one for over 45 years. The handlebars were not tight enough, and I went down so hard and fast in the bushes. lol I had hubby tighten it the right way. Tried again and was so shaky riding the damn thing that I never rode it again. I gave it away to my cousin the following summer. Too old to be breaking bones, I'll stick to walking and swimming.

Turns out I'd rather have one arm and working legs. I can walk, get out of bed, run from zombies, and it's amazing what I can do with my left hand.

Would've been my answer, as well. Definitely take an injured arm over a leg. So much shit gets jumbled with an injured leg. And definitely take that over hip pain or anything else involving that pelvic area. Way too painful.

I'm sorry to hear about the (still potential?) fracture, love. That absolutely sucks. What's the recovery? And shouldn't it slowly be recovering already since the injury happened last week?

Still, good you can at least swim, since that's such a blessing for the rest of the body also.

I'm sorry to hear about all of these injuries! I'd add cod liver oil and creatine into the mix. The cod liver oil will help reduce the inflammation, boost Vit D, and lube the joints and the 5-10g of creatine daily works wonders for both the body and the brain. I've been doing 5g a day for the past four months and my mood and recall have improved quite a bit. Hang in there. The body needs so much maintenance as we get older! I'm having more random things pop up like stabbing pains between my shoulder blades when I do the treadmill.
