Hive Questions That I Couldn't Answer, Can You?

in #hive3 years ago (edited)

Hi!

I've written 12,000+ words for beginners to Hive in the last two days.

Crazy! I knew Hive was complex, but I didn't expect to write that much. Hopefully there won't be a single beginner question that goes unanswered, but we'll see.

And writing all this forced me to learn so much. (And still likely getting much wrong.) Anyway, it's 9 main sections starting with how to sign-up easily, moving on to engagement etiquette, and ending with rewards & payouts... plus everything in between. (There's also bonus sections.)

Ultimately, it's going to need a major proof-read, but for now here's an outline of most of what I've researched.

Below I'll list my questions about Hive.

I'd love any helpful answers, resources, or links people can give.

I'm asking especially the people who so kindly responded to my last post and volunteered to help. (@intothewild , @nickhavey , and @marc5!) Thank you all so much in advance.

My questions for the Hive Beginner Guide:

(1) SIGNING UP

  • Why does Hivesigner need my active key, but Hive Keychain only needs my posting key?
  • Are Hive.Blog and PeakD 'equal' competing front-ends for Hive.io, or do they have a different relationship?

(2) RESOURCE CREDITS

  • Is Hive Power the same as Resource Credits? How are they related?
  • Does reblogging take (or earn) resource credits?

(3) POSTING

  • How do I resize an image in my post (on PeakD)?
  • What are communities?
  • What are cross-posting?

(4) No questions for this section... yet.

(5) CONSUME

  • When people upvote me, we all earn... but does reblogging result in more earnings? Does it earn for the reblogger & original-author & curators? If so, how?
  • Same for commenting-- Does 'commenting' result in more earnings? Does it earn for the commenter & the original-post-author & all curators? - If so, in what way?
  • Is Reputation Score the same as Hive Power?
  • Is reputation score stored on Hive.io, or PeakD, or both?
  • What is rep-score affected by?
  • Can rep-score be lowered by downvotes?

(6) No questions for this section... yet.

(7) REWARDS & EARNINGS

  • What's the relationship between Hive Power, reputation score, resource credits, and voting mana/power/weight?
  • Do they all affect one another?
  • Are some totally separate?
  • Do they all affect earnings or do some have zero impact on earnings?
  • Can witnesses band together and basically censor people with their power?
  • Is there anything important I should know about witnesses?
  • Can I become a witness?

How much money is in the Hive Reward Pool? Is it enough to pay new users?

  • (Also, I could use an expert to proof-read my 'inflation' section.)
  • How do curators share rewards?
  • Does reputation score determine their share?
  • And/or does Hive Power?

(8) PAYOUTS

  • What does this 'claim' button in my wallet do?
  • Why does the CLAIM button exist? (And does pushing it affect my HP or HBD?)
  • Can you give a clear explanation of how to convert HP/HIVE/HBD into a fiat currency such as USD?
  • Is the process different if I'm Canadian? Or European? Or American?

What exactly are holdings? Stakes? Vests/vesting?

  • What is the best resource for a beginner to learn about Hive Economics?
  • What is the best resource for a beginner to learn about Hive governance & politics?

(9) EXTRAS

What does **DAO **stand for? Is it the same as DHF? If so, why does it have two acronyms?

  • Are users 'HIVIANs' or 'HIVERs?' Why?

(10) RESOURCES

What Hive Tools are important? (HiveStacks, HiveStats, HiveBlocks, etc.)

(11) INFLUENCERS & VIPs

  • Who are the big fish on Hive? Which influencers to pay attention to?
  • Can bad things happen to me if I say something they don't like? Is it just the 20 witnesses or w/e?

Update: Thanks for answering so many questions so far, just a few to go!

I've done more research and study than you might think, but a lot of this stuff isn't answered clearly (or my Googling is way worse than I imagine.)

I apologize if this is too much to ask, but they really are things myself and @cynshineonline have been wondering. They're questions that most beginners coming from other platforms (FB, IG, Reddit, etc.) will be scared off by, so I'd really love to clear the fog away for them. Thing is I'm so new to Hive, that it's tricky for me.

Anyway, please feel no obligation here, and answer only whatever feels good and right to you.

Thanks so much for reading and to anyone who contributes helpful info. You rock! I really do see this becoming the best guide for newbies to Hive, and you're all helping it come to life. I appreciate you.

One more question:

Is it correct to upvote my own posts? How about to upvote my own comments? How about to comment on my own posts? Why is it good (or not good) to do these things?

Thanks again!

It is not seen as good to upvote your own posts and comments, because it is seen as you aren't engaging with the community instead you post or comment because you only want to "milk" the reward pool. If you do it, you'll be a target of larger stakeholders and downvoting you.

You can comment on your posts, no problem. If you always think your actions are to engage with others or explain things, I think you won't have any problem.

Also, you can post-edit your comments and posts.

Regarding the rest of the article, I'll try to answer some later ;)

I don't know if you already know but, peakd.com has a section for a FAQ: https://peakd.com/about/faq. Maybe some of them you find answers there.

Also. You should probably go to the discord of hive: https://myhive.li/discord
And discord of the peakd.com team:
https://discord.gg/Fy3bca5

Another helpful resource, thank you @marc5 ! :)

Edit: Also thanks for replying/upvoting/reblogging, I really appreciate it!

Thank you so much for explaining!

So I'll include in the guide:

  1. Don't upvote your own posts or comments if you can avoid it. Focus on upvoting the content of others.
  2. Feel free to comment on your own posts, but it's usually better to just 'edit' the original post.

I didn't know about that FAQ, I'll see if it answers anything, thank you.

Is it correct to upvote my own posts?

I usually don't do it unless I set a beneficiary. People have differing opinions, but people are mocked for liking their own stuff on other social media, why should Hive be any different? Voting your stake should be about rewarding others, not yourself IMO.

How about to upvote my own comments?

Normally no. One exception would be if there are many comments under your post and you want to float an important one to the top.

How about to comment on my own posts?

This is fine in circumstances where you want to add some information, but don't want to muddy the waters in your post. Under most circumstances though, you can simply edit your post.

Thanks for replying (and even quoting my questions so nicely, great touch.)

So to make sure I understand:

  1. Lean away from upvoting our own posts. If you've set a beneficiary, that's the 'best case' for upvoting one's self, but opinions differ.

  2. Lean away from upvoting our own comments, unless maybe there's an important one that needs to float to the top of thread.

  3. Self-commenting is fine, but editing the original post is likely better (this matches with @marc5 's answer too.)

Very helpful and insightful, I'll include this in the guide. I've yet to see it explained clearly for beginners. Thanks for replying/upvoting!

Ooohhhh good questions! You always think of good questions. I was wondering about this too the other day and didn't mention it while we were editing. hmmmm my bad. But glad you got answers. I read the ones below!

I've learned so much with your guide already. I hope others can answer some questions in Your post too. Looking forward to seeing it full realized. ❤️

~love, Cyn

Thanks, you added to my 'good questions.' And yes, so good of people from the Hive community to enlighten me and any other beginners who get to see this guide.

I'm thrilled you're learning anything from it. It's approaching completion :)

❤️❤️❤️

I haven't read the responses to this one and I see there's several, there's several opinions so what's one more?

I do not vote anything if my own, I see each vote given to myself as one less I can give someone else.

You ask a lotta questions. The end.

Kidding.

Are users 'HIVIANs' or 'HIVERs?' Why?

Neither, users are crackheads. Because weed is illegal where they live.

Opinion appreciated, thanks for explaining, and I like the 'one less for others' perspective. Interesting.

And you're totally right. I do ask a lot of questions, lol. But they're mostly answer (we're down to just 10 left!) and these questions came from actual beginners (myself included.) They're often the questions that stop people from joining, confuse them, or make them stick to traditional social media, so my aim is to provide answers, clarity, and understanding that allow people to onboard to Hive much easier than I did. :)

Hahaha... fair enough, but calling them crackheads all throughout the guide may make for awkward reading. It'd be nice to settle on a name. Plus, they can move to Canada, weed's legal here. :)

but calling them crackheads all throughout the guide may make for awkward reading.

It's probably best if you write it.

LMAO.

You're a great writer, but I'ma have to second that. lol.

I found this in answer to question #1:

But I find it hard to understand, maybe it would make sense to people who know Hive keys better?
