I found this video about 3 years ago and although I am not completely on his side on every line, he makes some quite convincing points. Now just yesterday, I found out that my iphone generates automatically a german subtitled version of the video and so I thought by myself that this would be a nice short topic to write about.

Apparently even after 23 million views, there is still a lot of unawareness out there, as one can see in the video "Parents react to Don't stay in school"
I rarely have seen so much positive reaction to the topic.
From my own experience there is much more negativity to be expected, as I often talk about the benefits of homeschooling and the problems involved having a compulsory eductation system as we have it in Germany from a very early age on.
The heated discussion only recently got some new "fuel" after the French president announced that children at the age of only 3 will have to go to "Kindergarten" in near future.
Sure there are benefits to the matter, as language skills developing for "new members of the society" coming as migrants or fugitives. Less known benefits are forming people into "accepting", "obedient" and "law-obiding" and also tax-paying members of society.
I really can imagine that this is the major cause of the actual state of our school system. The lack of real life application of most that is taught in school is just an unrelevant byproduct.

Vor etwa drei Jahren schon, habe ich dieses Video auf Youtube gefunden und obwohl ich nicht jeder seiner Zeilen bedingungslos zustimme, hat er doch einige wirklich schlagende Argumente. Gestern habe ich nun zufällig herausgefunden, dass mein iPhone automatische einen deutschen Untertitel zum Video generiert und deshalb dachte ich mir, dass dies doch ein schönes Kurzthema zum diskutieren wäre.
Hier die deutsche Übersetzung zum obigen Video:

Sie sagen, es sind nicht die Kinder,
die Eltern sind das Problem.
Würdet ihr also den Kindern beibringen,
gute Eltern zu sein,
wäre das Problem gelöst!
Diese ganzen Ratschläge über den Gebrauch
eines Kondoms,
aber keinen für den Fall,
wenn man ein Kind haben will.
Ich beherrsche nur die eine Sprache, ernsthaft?!
Der Rest der Welt spricht zwei,
glaubt ihr ich wär ein Idiot?
Sie wählen das Solarsystem
über das politische System
und wie ein normaler Bürger,
weiß ich nun nicht, was ich eigentlich wähle,
welche Politiken es gibt,
oder wie man sie verändern kann,
mais oui, je parle un peu de Francais.
(aber ich spreche ein wenig Französisch.)
Mit 18 erwartet man von mir,
dass ich einen Repräsentanten wähle,
für ein System,
das mir niemals präsentiert wurde.
Aber ich mach das nicht mit!
Ich erzähl allen,
dass meine Kindheit verschwendet war!
Ich verbreite überall,
wie ich "gebildet" wurde.
Und bestehe darauf, das diese
sinnlosen Dinge nicht in der Schule bleiben.
Bleib nicht in der Schule!

Es scheint als wären immer noch viele völlig völlig ahnungslos über diesen Zustand, und das nach über 23 Millionen Aufrufen dieses Videos. In dem rein englischen Video wie Eltern auf das obige Video reagieren kann man das recht gut beobachten.
Ich habe selten soviel positive Reaktionen auf dieses Thema gesehen.
Aus meiner Erfahrung heraus, kann man mit viel mehr Skepsis und Negativität erwarten, wenn man über die Vorteile von "Hausunterricht" und den Problemen spricht, die mit einer Schulpflicht einhergehen, so wie es in Deutschland der Fall ist.
Die hitzige Diskussion hat neue Fahrt aufgenommen, seitdem kürzlich Frankreichs Präsident ankündigte, dass Kinder in Frankreich bereits mit 3 Jahren verpflichtend in den Kindergarten (das klingt tausendmal schöner als "Kindertagesstätte") müssen.
Sicher gibt es Vorteile des aktuellen Systems, wie Sprachentwicklung für "neue Mitglieder der Gesellschaft" die zu uns als Migranten oder Flüchtlinge kommen. Weniger bekannte Vorteile wären, dass Menschen zu akzeptierenden, gehorsamen, gesetzestreuen und vor allem steuer-zahlenden Menschen geformt werden können.
Ich kann mir tatsächlich vorstellen, dass genau dies die eigentlichen Gründe für den Zustand unseres aktuellen Systems sind. Das Fehlen von Anwendbarkeit im wahren Leben der meisten vermittelten Inhalte ist nur ein irrelevantes Nebenprodukt davon.

I am glad they teach the quadratic equation instead of how to pay tax.
The quadratic equation will not change.
And yes, I am also glad they teach Shakespeare instead of discussing domestic abuse in school.
I understand that some teachers suck and some schools suck and I can see that many people had a really bad experience in school, but I simply can not stand this bullshit video above.
I like the flow, though.
What I don't like is the basic thought behind it, else to the general message of the song (he explains it elsewhere). If I understand his motivation rightly, he thinks that there must be MORE control and power to schools and education systems. So he acts like the "regular leftist" having the right observations with the wrong conclusions.

I have been a fan of BoyInABand for a while and "Don't Stay in School" is one of my favorite songs of his. There is so much truth in that song. They really need to revamp the whole school system and start teaching important lessons that will actually help make these kids more independent and informed people when they graduate.

Ich habe grundsätzlich nichts gegen Hausunterricht.
Aber diese Form der Bildung ist nicht für jede Familie etwas. Es muss Bildungseinrichtungen geben, wo Kinder etwas lernen können. Nicht jede Eltern haben die Zeit oder gar die Fähigkeit den Kindern das beizubringen, was die Schule den Kindern beibringt.
Dass das Schulsystem marode ist und dringend überarbeitet werden muss ist klar. Als erstes würde ich den Bildungshaushalt mindestens verdoppeln und mindestens doppelt so viele Lehrer einstellen, damit endlich kleinere Klassen entstehen.
Aber im Endeffekt ist das nur eine von unzähligen gravierenden Baustellen beim Thema Bildung.
Aber es wird immer nur geflickschustert. Da wird nicht wirklich etwas verändert. Und das hat auch einen Grund. Investitionen in die Bildung rentieren sich erst viel später 1-2 Legislaturperioden weiter. Man sieht dort keine schnellen Erfolge. Da ist es einfacher mal schnell Steuern zu senken, damit man wiedergewählt wird. Das wir damit unser Kapital, dass Deutschland dahin gebracht hat, wo es heute steht, nämlich die Bildung, langsam verkommen lassen, ist einfach traurig mit anzusehen...
So ähnlich ist auch der Ansatz von Boyinaband, mit dem ich nicht einverstanden bin. Ich bin da eher auf dem Standpunkt "freierer Wirtschaft" und entsprechender Wahl- und Fleißmöglichkeiten. So fühlt es sich zwar toll an, wie durchlässig unser System heute ist (Haupt- / Real- / und Oberschulen) aber es zeigt auch, wie sehr Standards nach unten geschraubt wurden um dies zu erreichen. In BWB gibt es noch nicht mal mehr einen NC für den Besuch eines Gymnasium.
Man weiß heute so viel mehr über das Erlangen von Wissen, wie das Gehirn funktioniert und welche Fähigkeiten "geschult" werden müssen. Das Schulsystem heute ist nicht nur marode, es ist obsolet.
Die Diskussion über "ich würde" oder "man müsste" und im Hinterkopf der Ansatz über Bildungspolitik und Steuergelder wird imho nie zu einem sinnvollen Ergebnis führen. Es fängt damit an, daß Eltern es als normal empfinden nach wenigen Wochen schon die Verantwortung abzugeben und wieder Teil- oder Vollzeit zu Arbeiten (aus Gleichberechtigungs-, Karriere- oder sonstigen Gründen... viele MÜSSEN auch, das ist mir klar). Dadurch ist es nicht mehr möglich mehr Verantwortung an die Eltern zu übertragen, die ja voll arbeiten um den ganzen Steuermann-induzierten Mist zu bezahlen, der heute als gesellschaftlich nötig erachtet wird.

Wenn ich hier jetzt anfangen würde zu diskutieren, dann wäre ich glaube ich verloren. Ich könnte nicht mehr aufhören. Es gibt ein paar Kommentare hier, auf die ich gerne antworten würde aber es kostet zu viel Energie und ist relativ sinnlos. Um zu diskutieren muss eine gewisse Offenheit bestehen, was gerade bei diesem Thema sehr schwierig ist. Ich kenn mich da aus 😉
Wir, mein Sohn und ich, haben 4 Jahre Regelschule hinter uns, die aus meinem offenen lebensbejahenden schlauen Sohn einen traurigen Schulverweigerer gemacht haben.
Dann habe ich die Notbremse gezogen und wir sind seit fast 2 Jahren auf einer freien demokratischen Schule, von der es in D 5 Stück gibt, gelandet. Er kann jetzt lernen was und wann er will. Er lacht wieder und fängt an sich wieder für Lernen zu interessieren. Der Weg dahin war steinig. In meinem Blog habe ich über diese Zeit geschrieben um es nochmal zu verarbeiten. Das hat mir gut getan und ist eine schöne Satire geworden. 😅
Wie Schule besser funktioniert kann man ja auch in Nachbarländern gut sehen. Das System wird sich verändern, immer mehr Menschen merken, dass es so nicht weitergeht. Ein bisschen wird es aber glaube ich noch dauern.

Home schooled children frequently combine for many purposes and they interact well. The growth of the home schooling movement means that more and more children are learning together, just not in a traditional classroom...
It is home schooling that is rejecting a narrowness. It is not a radical value system it's actually quite conservative...
There are pros as well as cons of homeschooling, if one does homeschooling he is not able to catchup with friends he remains in home all the time and will not get that much of exposure but on the other hand he can learn a lot from his parents, who will only try to teach him good and will not learn anything bad from the evils in our society

Not only I 100% agree with this, I'd also like to add the fact that high school made my life miserable. I'm not super familiar with the american school system but here where I live (Italy) it's insanity. I became a failure at everything I do and lost all interest in living. I know it's kind of cliché to be a teenage boy and hate your life, but bear with me: I have to spend 5 hours in a place that I hate (school) and and at times an equal amount of time studying (which I also have no interest in). To be fair I normally study 3 hours a day, and I only go out on Saturdays which means that 6/7 days of the week of my life revolve around studying and school. I also don't have a girlfriend (but that probably has to do with me being shy af, despite being good looking and skinny) and I don't have many friends either, which only adds to the miserable experience of my existence. And I blame for the most part school.
A good example of why you should stay in school. Referencing basic math and how it's irrelevant and shit? Its not. Math is everything. Maybe if he'd stayed in school he'd realize that he's a statistical outlier and, 'oh wait-' he's an outlier that shouldn't be giving advice to the general population? Not everyone can make youtube videos for a living. This video is a great way to feed the leaches of society; who feed off this self motivational shit; as fuel to sustain their never ending need for lifestyle justification.
He has an A grade in maths and physics and computing... (true!)
You are of course right that an understanding of maths is elementary for understanding life itself (there is a reason most classical philosophers have been mathematicians as well). Still there are quite important skills that are not at all covered in school and not any more are covered by families.

I agree with him 100% on this statement. Not because I’m still on school but because it’s true. I science you may want to take everything up to general or physical but after that, it’s only useful if you want to pursue a career that involves your knowledge about that. You may want to take up to pre algebra or algebra, but I shouldn’t be forced to take calculus and things like that in order to graduate. Now if I wanted to be an engineer, than yes I would take that, but if I don’t than I shouldn’t be required to. Like seriously, if I had a normal job, and a normal life, why do I need to know the quadratic equation? Now maybe for my kids, but if this video gets heard, that could be changed.I have a lot on my mind about this.

My vote goes to the 1st one
First, the rap was delivered with seemingly genuine emotion and passion. It reminded me of public school, which felt like marking time in a minimum security prison.
If the parent(s) are motivated and engaged, home schooling can be fantastic. I can thoroughly understand why many parents don't want to put their kids in the "system."
We recently saw a video on YouTube about German parents who didn't want their "young" children to see graphic sex photos as part of sex education. They actually arrested a pregnant mother who refused to let her child be exposed to that. It was pretty shocking.
Both banners are excellent, if I were selecting for myself I would go with #2.
This song isn't about not going to school. It's about these pointless subjects not staying in school. Some people don't get that, man.
More important: it is not about NOT learning, but to learn the right things (imho he is biased concerning some of the subjects though)
I think it's all on the bright side! Whether studying at school or homeshooling. Maybe a little difference from me, if homeschooling children learn more optimal, while in school teachers teach in general. That is, the approach used by teachers in schools is not able to embrace children of students one by one. This is what distinguishes it, in addition to a sense of responsibility is also a factor that distinguishes it.

I totally agree with the point which is highlighted in this video because what we study in school days most of the things are of no use in our practical life. They focus more on theory rather than giving practical knowledge.
sometimes schools are taught a lot of unrelevent things which are usually no connection with our daily life, but it may helps to thinking capability, problem solved or personal skill developments.

The free market finds a solution for everyone, we also need a free market in schooling. The German school system is if like everyone had to wear the same shoe size. I have students in my class, who are refugees and can't even understand the language I speak properly and there are also students who are overqualified. But they have to go to the same class.
How should this work?
