My advice if your iMac is making loud noises. Throw it in the trash and never buy Apple again or at least hack the Apple to put Ubuntu on it.
Ubuntu is not tricky, it works just like Windows.
You can customize Linux to have a user interface (UI) to make it look like Apple UI.
Was it the hard drive making the sound?
Did the PC only make the odd noises while you were watching Picard?
I use Ubuntu Mate and not the other flavors.
CJ, could it be the motherboard acting up or the RAM?
Do you think your PC is overheating?
Could it be the sound card or the CPU?
You could try to check for bulges on the motherboard, RAM, capacitors. Bulges are like bumps, like swellings. Like small hills. Bulges can appear when certain parts are wearing out or overworked or something. I guess it depends on whether the problem is mostly hardware or software related.
Some computers can last for more ten years. I guess depends.
Could it be a virus?
I use Pirate Bay all the time and download directly.
Most viruses are made for Microsoft. Some are made for Apple.
Or perhaps some are made for Apple.

The temperature sensor might not be working correctly. It does get hotter in the summer. I use an external fan to blow on my laptop when it is too hot.

In this Apple Discussion thread a number of people have noticed such buzzing sounds coming from their Airport Extreme units when performing file transfers, and have been concerned whether or not the device is going bad.
Can you go into safe mode?
You could try booting into the Target Disk mode.
You could try the process of elimination. Try unplugging things. Try unhooking things, one at a time or all at once and then plug in one thing at a time to see if you hear any differences. For example, try to remove the RAM. Turn it on and listen. You can try to remove the hard drive and then listen. It could be the power supply. It could be something to do with how the power is being distributed from the power supply and into the motherboard. You could take photos of the motherboard, other parts, and then show people the pics. Try unhooking from the Internet to see if it still makes noises. See if it makes noises in safe mode.
