Do you remember, when in the early 1960's, there was a rush of all these British Bands, coming to America and taking us by storm? These bands introduced a whole new, refreshing type of music that teens all over the country went crazy over. I call this phase, “The British are coming, the British are coming.”
For me, it all started with the Beatles, when they released their first song in the U.S., with the single, “Please Please Me.” Beatlemania was all over England by then and growing each day. Eventually, the Beatles came to America on February 9, 1964 and appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. They were such a surprising hit, that after that appearance, America’s doors were swung wide open to an influx of British bands and singers.
Do you remember the Rolling Stones, the Dave Clark Five, Chad and Jeremy, Herman’s Hermits, The Animals, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Hollies, Peter and Gordon, The Yardbirds, The Moody Blues, Manfred Mann, The Kinks, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Donovan, etc.? I know I left a lot of groups and singers out, but there are too many.
If you were a teen during the early 60's, I'm sure you know at least a few of these British Bands or singers. How about some of these songs? She Loves You, She’s Not There, For Your Love, I’m Into Something Good, Downtown, Glad All Over, Can’t Buy Me Love, I’m Telling You Now, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, I’m Henry VIII, Mrs. Brown You’ve Got a Lovely Daughter, Satisfaction, The House of the Rising Sun, Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying, Wishin’ and Hopin’, A World Without Love, and A Hard Day’s Night.
Finally do you remember the influence the British invasion had on us? Rememeber the mop top hairdos, the Nehru jackets, Twiggy, Yardley make-up, mini skirts, white boots, Mod fashion, etc.?
So, the British Invasion of the 60's, had a good influence on America. The Music world was able to broaden its styles and genres, girls could go to concerts to scream & faint, everyone wanted and got a Nehu jacket to wear, females made a mad dash to buy Yardley products, Mod fashion became the in fashion of the time with its geometric patterns and girls couldn't wait to wear their calf high white boots. Those were such wonderful times and England was all the rage.
Even now, I still enjoy my oldies music and fondly remember all those wonderful times in the 60’s. Thank goodness the British invaded America or we would not have all of the above!

Oh I LOVE these walks Down Memory Lane! So much of my young teen years were spent at The Skate Ranch, our nearest roller skating rink. We had the obligatory pipe organ with the creepy organist lol, but over in the corner by the snack bar, there was a jukebox. Many of the records housed in that jukebox were from the British invasion :) I love the music and know well each of the songs you mentioned lol.

@tamaralovelace, you are an amazing and fun person! I always look forward to your posts and comments. I'm sure we could have been best of friends back then, having a blast and trying all sorts of things. I so remember going to the skating rink but mine was an ice rink instead. It was at the SF Sutro Baths Ice Rink which was really creepy. We would have to pass a window display of a Tom Thumb Museum which dated back to probably the early 1900's and then climb down a massive stair case, like we were going to a dungeon. And yes, I remember that very creepy organ music. What possessed them to play that music is beyond me.

I really enjoyed this. I wish I could have lived through those hugely influential times, and played some music of my own to such a responsive, lively community. With the state of our technology and access to information the music industry will never again be like it was back then, but it helps us share the good times like so

It brought back so many fun and happy memories that I am so grateful for your thoughtfulness. I do wish those times could return, when people really enjoyed themselves, having fun without strings attached. I guess that is why I really love the oldies. I know the music is outdated but it really was a time of more innocence, less pressure and pure feelings of being alive. My goal here is to spread more awareness that people really need to find themselves again with less judgement, selfishness and self-absorbed attitudes. We need to see everyone as one. I absolutely adore this post of yours cabbagepatch. Thank you for taking us down memory-lane, excellent taste in music. I was not even born back then but since 72 I was raised on this music by my older siblings which are between 15-11 years older than me. My kids even enjoy some of these songs as I taught them to have an appreciation for all the different genres in music.

I really did think of you when I wrote the post and yes, I know the first time the saying "the British are coming, the British are coming" was used, it was under different circumstances. I wanted people to see what amazing gifts England gave to us in the 60's. England was all the rage.......we all wanted to be English! It was an amazing and happy time for me back then.
