Things people love that I do not understand

in #life2 years ago

Don't get the wrong idea here: I am not judging anyone and I also believe that whatever you are into, go for it! There are just some things out there that people are super-enthusiastic about to the point of obsession and I just don't get it.

This doesn't mean they are wrong, I just don't get it. I'm sure there are things that I love that they would find boring as well. The idea behind this post is not to insult anyone, but just some sort of free-write about something I was thinking about the other day when I was walking my dog and saw a group of people on Vespas. Which brings me to my first topic

Vespas

These loud and "tinny-sounding" bikes are not only really expensive and difficult to find parts for, but they are also slow. I don't get the allure and really can't understand outside of a collector's point of view why anyone would want to have one of these when there are so many other, more efficient, and cheaper alternatives. I just don't get it

Choppers

I will admit that I owned one of these things at one point in the past when I had a really good year and in a moment of weakness I purchased a "toy" that I did not need and didn't really have much practical purpose for.

They are loud, terrible on gas mileage, heavy, almost impossible to park and god help you if you ever front park into spot on a decline since they do not have a reverse gear and weigh a million pounds. The only bones I have ever broken in my life came at the hands of one of these monstrosities, and it wasn't because the crash was bad, it was because the bike landed on my leg and it crushed my ankle in 3 places.

A lot of these bikes don't even have fuel gauges but instead have a "reserve tank" that you switch over to after the main tank runs out, then you know only from experience how many more miles / km you have left before you are well and truly fucked. I have been in a situation multiple times where I had to push this heavy monster down the road in order to get a gasoline top up.

Also, at least on my bike, things like tires were absurdly expensive. When I went to replace the rear tire on my modified Honda Steed 800 I was shocked to find out that a new tire was going to cost $800. That's just crazy talk man! I will never buy another one of these things and again, I just don't get it.

Star Trek

Ok nerds out there: Understand this. I am one of you. I own around 20 T-shirts and 4 of them are Star Wars themed. I do draw the line at classic Star Trek though because, and someone is going to have a problem with this I'm sure, they aren't good.

I have tried on multiple occasions in my life to get into this show. I really have. I almost immediately become incredibly bored and I get tired of trying to understand why there are so many people that absolutely LOVE this series. I feel the same way about most of the other Star Trek series as well. I liked the films basically across the board, but as far as the original series is concerned.... I just don't get it.

Anything made by Supreme

I'm not really a fashion guy so this is the first step I have in not understanding the enthusiasm behind people getting this overpriced clothing. I've never really understood the fascination with labels but when it comes to Supreme I find the craze even more absurd.

When I see someone wearing Supreme gear I feel as though this is a person that must need constant recognition and is likely very active on social media. With some high end gear I can understand the inflated prices because at least it is of higher quality. I have a NorthFace jacket because it is made of waterproof material and genuinely is better than other jackets. Supreme stuff is exactly the same as their generic counterparts but because of the name on it, it costs 10 times the price.

Supreme can sell anything with their name on it and people will buy it. There is a video out there of a guy who waited in line for hours in order to get a Supreme crowbar and when interviewed about it, he doesn't even know what a crowbar is used for.

I just don't get it

Dragonfruit

This one is a bit more Asia specific because I had never even seen one of these or heard of them until I moved to Thailand. There is a certain season where these fruits will be in every market and there are a few people out there that insist that they LOVE dragonfruit. To me, dragonfruit has a strange texture with all the tiny weird seeds in it and the worst part about is that it looks like it is going to be something really exotic but it honestly tastes like you are eating a glass of water. It has no taste and no, I am was not suffering from Covid effects when I formed this opinion.

When dragonfruit is served as a dessert I am severely let down because there are so many fruits out there that actually taste like something but dragonfruit is not one of them.

I just don't get it

I was going to put "soccer" in here as well but figured I would limit the amount of potentially pissed off people so I'll just leave that one alone for now. I could make an entire article about my disdain for that and I might do so and see how many nasty remarks I can get thrown at me.

In the meantime if you can think of anything that you "don't get" I'd like to hear about them

Sort:

One of the people on my street owns a chopper and he unnecessarily revs it up when he is leaving the neighborhood. Everyone hates him because of this, especially my dogs. I don't know if they think that this makes them look cool but I can assure you, it does not.

yeah even when I had mine i tried my best to be very quiet in my neighborhood. Those things don't have to be as loud as they are but some owners go out of their way to make theirs as loud as possible.

I am a huge Trekkie, but if I am being honest, I am with you on TOS. Much of it is unwatchable. I am in the minority, though. I think if most Trek fans were honest, they would agree that TNG was way better. But they won't admit it because saying the Next Generation was better than the Original Series would somehow ruin their street cred, as if being a Trekkie didn't already do that.

I have never heard of Supreme, but then I am old and out of the loop.

I have never owned a Vespa, but I did have a Honda Spree back in the late 80s. It pissed me off getting passed on the road by pretty much everyone while I scooted along at 30MPH. Also, the first time I used the kick starter it broke, and never worked again. They wanted an insane amount of money to fix it! It was fun for 5 minutes but so frustrating slow that I got fed up pretty quickly. Although riding to work on like 2 bucks of gas for a week was nice!

great points about a lot of things here. TNG was better. They had money, star-power and decent writers. TOS had an original idea and I'll give them that but I can't identify with anyone who tries to say that the originals are good because they are not.

As someone that has ridden a lot of scooters in the past 20 years I can say that I am for 'em! I just don't understand the people that are into basically the barista tattoo-covered millennial version of a scooter, especially when there are so many more out there that are superior in every way.

I actually love Star Trek and dragon fruit. lol.

and a lot of other people do as well..... this is just fine too!

don't you ever apologize for liking what you like (not that you did). I think it is important that we are all individuals with our own likes and dislikes. It would be a boring world if we all thought the same. These are just thing that I can't relate to the love of it

antique i think

Fucking hate star trek myself. It'so fake looking. I never understood choppers either having your arms in an uncomfortable position. The vespas I don't mind as I was into the mod scene in the UK and the Vespa was kind of an emblem for that culture. Heading down to the seaside on the vespa in the suit and the mod haircut. You should watch the film Luca on Disney. If you have kids,(its a cartoon). All about sea monsters and Vespas.

i'll check out that film buddy, thanks for the recommendation. My chopper wasn't comfortable at all and I don't think many of them are. I just don't get it

Thankfully everyone is different otherwise things would be so boring. Vespas I can understand if you had one when you were younger or a collector. Tried Dragon Fruit once and was really disappointed as it was nothing special and was more of a let down expecting so much more. Different things make people tick and many things we do others don't understand.

agreed. There are many other things that others don't get. When I was a kid I spent basically all of my time, money , and energy on tweaking and forever improving my car stereo. Even though I worked for peanuts like most teenagers do almost all my money went straight out the door on things I definitely didn't need like gold-plated connectors and plexiglass custom containers for the subwoofers with mirrors inside so you can showcase them.... which I almost never did.

Very interesting. I don't really see the draw of scooters either. I can see how Choppers might be interesting to look at and cool from a design standpoint, but I have never ridden a motorcycle, so I don't really see the draw there either. I was more of a Next Generation guy than Original series, so while I do love Star Trek, I am less a fan of ToS. I just finished watching the latest season of Star Trek Discovery. That had a slow start, but it has grown on me. I've never had draonfruit, so I can't speak to that and I have never heard of this "Supreme" brand, so I guess I am out of the loop on that one too. I have to agree with you on soccer as well, but I just learned about a new game called Omegaball. I am going to write a post about it today on my sports account. You should check it out!

I guess you could say I could tolerate Next Generation but still, not really into it. I just watched some Omegaball. I think there is a little bit of promise there but I can't imagine anyone paying to see it. I'd like to see more teamwork from two teams temporarily ganging up on the 3rd team.

I'm delighted you have never heard of Supreme, it's really really stupid.

Yeah, I definitely think omegaball is something I need to dig into a bit more. It does seem kind of one-sided. Especially for whoever has possession of the ball.

First, to address on bikes. I'm not a biker, so I don't get it. But if I had to have a bike that I think it's cool, comfy, decent fuel economy, I think I will get a touring bike. Benelli will be it if I must pick a specific model, with a humble single pot 250cc engine, other than sounding like a Vespa and top speed like a Vespa, I guess it does all the touring bike job.

I'm a new found Trekkie like less than 15 years Trek age. I don't know about others, but my understanding about the addiction is, I tend to start imagining what if I'm one of the Trek crew? But ofcourse, also have a fair share of romantic scene with seven of nine. Oh and can't help it but to paying too much attention to her G string lines. I don't understand what else other Trekkie fancy about the show, but I'm merely stating the fact why am I into it 🤣

I was still wondering what the hell supreme is before I found a picture on Pinterest a guy shared his tattoo fail, SUPERME 😂 then only I notice there's this brand. Dont get me wrong, I don't get it simply because I'm not into it.

Last but not least, dragon fruit is just one of many hike up super fruit we had back in the 90s where people promote the high antioxidant of the fruit. Since then, it become a thing. It's not you don't get it, we don't get it either. If you ask me, I have never personally spend money to buy that fruit. I'm a durian guy.

It's funny because I was contemplating putting durian on the list but instead went with dragonfruit because with durian at least there is a devout group of people that absolutely love it and will pay top dollar for it because of the regional differences in taste. Dragonfruit tastes the same everywhere you have it and by "the same" i mean it tastes like you are eating an expensive glass of water that is wrapped in a red shell.
