Old-school G-dog

in #memories4 years ago

The other day a user asked to see some old photos of me; I'd just done a post about a photo book I'd created for my wife Faith full of photos from our thirty three years together and he suggested that he would get a real kick out of seeing the G-dog from thirty years ago. I think he wanted to have a laugh at my expense.

Now, I'll be honest, there is only a small chance of that every happening, minuscule in fact, as thirty years ago...Well, let's just say you don't want to see those images. You'll have to trust me on that.

However I thought it would be cool, and probably embarrassing, to roll out a few from back in the day so, here's the first one. @mistakili I hope you're watching...This is all your fault.

This is me in around 1998, so at twenty eight years of age. Those keen-eyed observers may notice I'm beardless in this image which is a condition I will probably never revisit; Ever. #nobeardnogood

I'd been out hunting on this occasion, about 1,500 kilometres from home and well north of a place called Bourke. We were over the Queensland border on this occasion, a few hundred kilometres north from Bourke which is in the State of New South Wales. For perspective, in Australia, the term back-o-Bourke means in the middle of bloody nowhere because Bourke itself is in the middle of bloody nowhere. So, I was quite literally out back-o-Bourke.

I'd been out for a week pig hunting with three mates and despite sleeping on the ground in a swag for a week, cooking on a fire and not having a shower I still managed a smile for the camera. This was back before the days of smartphones so selfies weren't a thing. However I added the black and white filter to make it look older than it is because I called my post old-school.

It was a nice spot though, a massive cattle farm, of some 150 kilometres long by about 90 kilometres wide or so. Big.

I'll not go into the nuts and bolts of the hunting trip; We hunted, shot stuff and sat around the fire. There's not much else to it. Oh, on the way home we hit a kangaroo in the four wheel drive though. This was problematic as I was doing 110kph when that happened...The kangaroo didn't have a good day, and it cost $1,500 to fix. Luckily the steel bull-bar did its job and we could still drive the vehicle. My three mates all paid a quarter of the cost. Good mates huh? I got in a lot of trouble though as this was Faith's little truck!

Photos like this never really mean much to anyone but those in the photos I guess. I mean what do you care about an old photo of some dude you don't even know?

The thing is though, that to me this was a really memorable time of my life. I was twenty eight, still playing American football, as fit as a bloke could be and as tough as old boot leather. It was a nice time of my life; Uncomplicated and with a plethora of possibilities ahead of me.

Yes I know, it's not a great photo, but to me it is more than just a photo...It's a memory-trigger, a snapshot of a second of my life, and it brings back those days and the feeling of invincibility. It's a good memory.

Usually I'd ask you to post one of your own photos below or in a post but despite people feeling comfortable splashing their images and blurting their lives out all over Facebook, hive seems to be filled with many secret squirrels. However, if you feel like it just go ahead. You never know, you might make someone laugh or smile.

Stop it! You haven't changed a bit...Well, maybe more handsome?

Good tag by the way.

A photograph captures a moment in time. If that photograph captures a memory of the moment it is a good photo.

I'm going to post a photo where I'm clean faced. I was probably 25 when I started a mustache and really haven't been with out one since. I can't grow much of a full beard, but I often have a tuft or two on my chin. But always the mustache.

This is my HS graduation photo. I had about 3 inches left to grow and near 100 lbs. I was skinny and cocky and brash. Nothing like the current mellow me.

Looks like the future Mr. President!

I really like looking through old photos. My own and the family too plus others. I love WW1 and WW2 photos of soldiers prior to battle and with family and then in the field and after theyvreturn too. Tells a story.

I have a heap of photos from my family going way back. It's fun to look at them, remember the people and see others long gone that I never met.

Thanks for throwing this picture up Tom.

Well, this one is my Grandfather (who looks just exactly like his oldest son) between the Spanish American War and WWI. It's what he looked like when he hit the port at Darwin.

Old photos are pretty cool. He looks focused on getting ashore in Darwin and getting into some trouble of the female variety.

You know? It's a little bit hard for me to imagine that of the man I knew and loved. But he was a sailor in the USN AND had 48 hour Liberty call, so I know what that means.

So, yeah. I'm guessing he was headed for trouble of the female variety.

Old photos are great! I don't actually have that many of myself because I generally much prefer to be behind the camera, but here's one of me back in the day. I'm the one in the tartan skirt. 😄

Happy looking kid by the looks of it.

There was a horrible moment when I saw this in which I was afraid you were going to say you were the lady with the glasses on!

I'm not one for too many photos either, I don't see the point, although I always make sure there's a few of me around the place...One never knows, in the future the world may need something as a source of mirth...Photos of me might generate it.

Thanks for joining in. Much appreciated.

!ENGAGE 25

I kind of feel like the lady with the glasses on sometimes! But no, not quite there yet, lol.

I think I'm wearing my "oh my god I'm on a horse on a merry-go-round I'm in heaven!" face in that pic. I was kind of obsessed with them as a kid.

That 70's fashion though, oh dear! At least I'm not responsible for it, the blame lies squarely with my mother.

One never knows, in the future the world may need something as a source of mirth...Photos of me might generate it.

I see you share the same level of love that I have for photos of myself. I'm so very glad I didn't grow up in the selfie generation of today. 😬

Lol, 70's fashion wasn't the best huh? I've got some crackers from the 90's too though. And the 80's. And the 2000's.. Ah hell, pretty much any year in which I lived.

Yeah, could you imagine feeling the need to turn your phone on yourself every second of the day? Hideous. You've heard of the Jurassic Age...This will known as the Narcissistic Age. What a horrendous state of affairs.

I think the 70's and 80's were by far the worst decades in history for fashion! Not that I'm a fashion expert, far from it, but I know what my eyes like and it really isn't that.

Narcissistic Age, absolutely. I'll never understand it. I have been known to post a rare selfie but every time I do I immediately regret it. I guess I'm just made of different stuff. Not necessarily better, but most definitely different. 😄

I don't mind people posting pictures of themselves, you know, on holiday and stuff. But every ten seconds? Here's me at McDonalds. Here's me at the post office. Here's me in my bedroom. Here's me in a rest room. Here's me at work. Here's me in my car. Here's me showing boobs. Here's me showing my butt. Here's me at the supermarket. Here's me eating corn. Here's me pouting like a trout for no reason, Here's me with a snapchat filter. Here's me with another snapchat filter...I think you get the idea. It's dumb.

Ha, very cool!

Much cooler than this!

THIS IS A TRAVESTY! Those curtains with that wallpaper I mean. Lol.

Long hair huh? Interesting to see the Boomdawg with any at all. You know, I had long hair to my shoulders in the mid 1990's, for a couple years. Of course I have a picture...But I don't want to post it...Too many people may want to gouge out their own eyes!

Oh, just so your know, that hamster that runs the treadmill in your noggin seems to have escaped...Just saying.

Boomy, thanks for joining in, and with such a bloody cracker too!

!ENGAGE 25

Lol. The number of times I have shown this photo to someone and they have commented on the curtains and wallpaper!! They were a bit mental!!

I was never the same ever since the hamster of brain wheel turning fell out of my noggin!!

That heinous wallpaper/curtain combination is possibly the root-cause of all your issues. Lol.

...Or the lack of the hamster-wheel turning hamster.

Haha, it burnt out my mind!!!!

Hahaha😂😂😂😂.....Uncle G!!!!wow wow wow wow....no beards!whaat whaaat?!!!😂😂😂😂😂....

Man, you've aged quite well...

I'd been out for a week pig hunting with three mates and despite sleeping on the ground in a swag for a week, cooking on a fire and not having a shower I still managed a smile for the camera

You sure knew how to have some fun too...yikes! to the Kangaroo....I have this friend who is crazy about speed too, I always try to warn him that I was never going to partake in the cost splitting should anything happen to the car while he's driving, well guess what, each time something did happen, we always split the cost of repair!( I hate that guy loool)....

I was twenty eight, still playing American football, as fit as a bloke could be and as tough as old boot leather.

You sure knew how to have some fun, and infact still do. What a physique, I'm like half that size 😂😂😂😂😂😂....please where was your brother during these times?

One thing remains constant in your looks though....your smile....same from then till now hahahaha.....

I've had a pretty good laugh from this,...really nice share Uncle G! Thanks for stepping up to it...

Maybe I'd share some old pictures of myself if I can find one...

Life's too short not to have some fun. The thing is that within two years of this photo being taken my life got really complicated so it's good to look back on a more simple time.

I still have fun though. Always. Well, not always, mostly.

So where was my brother? He was living almost 4,000 kilometres away in far north Queensland. He never came hunting with me.

Now, where's your photo? 😂

Now, where's your photo? 😂

I guess I have to get drunk first! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

#twentyeightchallenge sure sounds like it'll be fun.

I'm sure you won't mind getting that way...Never drink-hive though. That way lies madness! 😉

Actually I do mind...I'm very light headed...I'm more of a juice guy...lol

What do I know? I think you looked good even without the beard, I was just surveying the machine you're sitting and it looked a damn fine soldier that Just finished two tours in Iraq hahaha

Thanks mate, it's always nice to receive a compliment. Jeez, it was so long ago really...22 years. I've changed in that time, but I'm still rocking it! (Just not as much. Lol.)

Yeah still good the great looks hahaha. 22 years wow

Your face is so naked! Lol

Love looking at some old photos, even if they are not the best. I have a couple from high school I look at and think ‘ugh...’ but they are still funny.

My face liked nakedness at that stage. Thinking back though...Think of all that money I could have saved on razors if I had a beard! Hundreds! Lol.

A book photos are funny. I have one. May post it. Well see...Might need to get drunk first. 😂

Old photos really are the BEST! The older the better. And you're not some dude I don't even know. I do know you a little so that makes the old photo even better. :)

We're practically best mates you and I! 😉

I like old photos. Being 50 there's loads of old ones of me to look at! 🥴

Seriously though, I think it's nice to look back on them, remember good and bad times. Reminds me of the importance of living life fully.

Dang those roos are pain when you hit them in a vehicle 😵

Yeah, made a hell of a bang. Head hit the hood, caved it in, body ended up in the right hand quarter panel. Smashed a head light. All repairable but messy. Poor bugger didn't know what hit it.

Hope Faith didn't punish you to much for something not really you're fault.

Nah, she was ok with it. Like you say, not my fault. She was less happy with the blood on the tailgate from a roo we'd shot and carried to a different spot as bait for the pigs. Blood doesn't wash off so well.

Dang Galen!! you look handsome even without the beard!!

Lol...Back in the old days I kept a beard occasionally. These days all the time, or I look like a Muppet. 😉

WOW. very old. and I was happy to see your memory. I like things that are sincerely shared. and memories keep people strong. Thanks for sharing.

Old pictures can be fun I think and I don't mind sharing a few here and there. I'm glad you liked it. 😁

My face has not been beardless in many, many years. I have no plans to make it so anytime soon. Only if absolutely required will it happen.

Regulation dictated my no-beardiness for a while, but soon after the beard arrived and we've been neighbours since. We've pretty friendly so I'd miss old beardy if he was to go...It would only happen in the advent of a tragic shaver accident.

I have had times while shaving where I thought I'd better be careful or I might cut off more than I want.

The worst is when you fuck up one side...That's decision time...Shave the lot off, or be lopsided- for a week or two. Hate that!
