Stop Checking the News

in #news5 months ago (edited)

This title really says it all

but I'm a man of manly many words so let's add some words to it.

Although, in all honesty, do I really need to explain myself here?

I don't think so

I much rather look at the sheep and the single cow ( that I didn't photograph today ), all of them happily grazing away, in the green field, not thinking about the future or the past, let alone about all the misery in the world.

although we might underestimate them

I also stared at the clouds, doing their thing, drifting and floating and changing shape all the time.

I know our thoughts and emotions are like clouds - or like flies that I can swat, when they bug me - but I often forget about it.

I often need to feel miserable for a while, before the wisdom hits me again and it seems like I reached that point, again, today.

Now let's see if I can take it easy on checking the news.

I have been aware of how it affects my mood ( and hardly ever in a positive way ) for a long, long time
but, like many of us, I keep compulsively checking it, over and over again.

Not today, so far.

I much rather focus on the animals in the fields, the beautiful mountain view and the driftnet clouds, without ignoring what is going on in the world.

I'm not living under a rock, although I sometimes wished I did ;<)

Let's be honest, nobody benefits from us feeling down ( aside from, perhaps, the government and big pharma ), so if there's anything we can do to feel ( a little ) better, it's the way to go.

Sending love and good vibes.

Keep enjoying nature, as much as you can,
and try not to check the news ( too much ),
the dopamine rush doesn't last long.

Sort:

I often joke that there could be a zombie apocalypse taking place around the world right now and I'd have no idea. I stopped paying attention to the news years ago and never looked back. The moment I stopped using social media also helped. I have zero interest in politics or the negative events taking place at any given time.

It feels so much nicer to be a bit ignorant, to feel like that time could go towards either making yourself feel better or spreading some positivity somehow, even if it's just with a creative hobby you have and can share with others.

The news thrives on outrage, and the moment you realise that, even if they say nice words you like sometimes, they're manipulating your emotions to keep you checking in.

The news thrives on outrage

True 100%, that is the state of journalism. News is not reported anymore. News is created in studio and at times more toxic than the TV soaps.
I am not sure that ignoring News media is not a good solution. But I get it nobody has the time or energy to get in and investigate for themselves

In the recent Chennai flood, I was continuously following News updates and to a point it did help me plan my escape.

You get it but 'doing it' is next level ;<)

Just gotta fill your time with something else and then the need to check it disappears, especially once you notice how much better you feel mentally. Go look at those cows and sheep, take a notebook with you and write/draw in the fields. A few hours will pass without the news being present, and you won't miss it one bit. ;^)

'Note' taken.

Oh and remind me to get myself an old Nokia ( for texting and calling only ) to possibly have on me once I go out.

Cheers buddy!

P.S. I usually have a notebook on me but also almost always that freaking smartphone haha!

I've been forgetting to take my sketchbook with me lately. Need to get the habit of taking those things with me wherever I go. It absolutely helps for those times where you might feel like you need to check the phone. Instead you pull out the sketchbook and look around you. Really relaxing with a coffee. :^)

Oh and about those phones: a lot of people have old styled phones here in Armenia. It was interesting to me at first, but it seems they're sold new. So old-but-new styled phones. No touchscreen, no apps, no browser. Just a small phone as it used to be.

I went out without my phone this afternoon, ended up in a bar and then outside some more. No phone on me.

It also reminded me of the good old days of going out on long walks with my Canon 7D DSLR on me and perhaps a MP3 player, instead of just carrying this machine called 'smart'phone that we use for everything. It's still possible ;^)

Would be nice to see a post on those events!

For a while now when I'm outside I really ignore my phone, I don't even listen to music with it. I just much prefer to look around and hear all the sounds. It makes me feel much more present, in the moment. Actually living and moving. It feels much more liberating, like you said in the good old days with that simplicity. The weird side to it though is realising you're the only one not glued to a screen at all times.

Nowadays, the life of a person is suffering from many problems and after hearing the news, a person gets very worried and goes into depression.

and after hearing the news, a person gets very worried and goes into depression.

Not everybody but it sure does not help. If your'e more sensitive than others ( like me ), it might be better to avoid the news as much as you can.

Yeah you are right.

Good morning my friend from Cambodia. Sorry I didn’t comment on your blogs because I difficult to understand all. The pictures are beautiful and cold country. Big hugs my friend.

No worries, I get it.
But I'm happy to hear that you appreciate the pictures
🤗💚

When I check the news. I laugh. It's a mix between a comedy and a freak show. The only news I try to follow is related to crypto.

Maybe I will meet you under a rock around Christmas.

When I check the news. I laugh. It's a mix between a comedy and a freak show.

Haha! I manage to do that on some days. Thanks for the reminder!

And great description of what we call 'news': comedy-freak show indeed.

It's what a horror clown act, in a circus, but the question is:

are we the audience or part of the 'spectacle' or perhaps the clown itself? ;<)

We've logged out a while ago....and you know me, nobody tells me what to do.
Let's just see what happens around us and try to live a good life and enjoy.

Every day I look at animals and realize that it could be so easy. They don't need to pay bills and work for a boss (although certain animals work their ass off). And yesterday in the sauna...I saw those ducks floating in front of me...the only thing they do all they besides just floating? Eat and fuck and fly away

We are indeed animals who over-think and over-complicate everything. It does not help to have a conscience. Also, we are the only creatures using money, complicating stuff even further ;<)

Oooh you hit the nail on the head. I couldn't have said it better myself. Many times every day I hear someone saying 'did you know' or 'have you heard'. My least favorite intro to a conversation goes 'I heard on the news today...' fill in the rest lol. It's all meant to get you to feel a certain way and diminishes our ability to think or feel for ourselves. Lots of folks self medicate by watching the news, only to end up with psychosis.

Same here.

I guess people are attracted to 'drama' ( be it reality shows, the news, zombie apocalypse series, gossiping or whatever ) whether we are aware of it or not. It seems to temporarily make us feel better about ourselves but does it really benefit us in the long term?

Lots of folks self medicate by watching the news, only to end up with psychosis.

That too. We tend to numb ourselves to not feel our pain and never learnt how to actually feel, it's the stuff that isn't taught in school or even by our own parents.

My father had a psychosis ( once or twice ) and was on anti-depressants for decades. I seem to have inherited his 'thinking' and 'feeling' and am doing the daily work to not end up like him and get sicker and sicker over time. Nature and writing/ expressing myself are too important ways of doing so.

Sending love!

Keep up that daily work, stay in the present and keep writing! We are not our mothers and fathers.

@tamaralovelace sent you LUV 🙂 (1/1)

We are not our mothers and fathers.

You are right about that.

Thank you!
❤️

I watch it for entertainment nowadays.
To watch responsible people act like spoiled brats on TV is fun. I know its toxic but I consume it like a wine accompanying some research and digging on the subject myself just to appreciate how stupid the news is😂😂😂😂.

But ignorance is no longer bliss, Not anymore.

If you manage to watch it and actually feel 'entertained', good for you.
I prefer other types of entertainment.

know its toxic but I consume it like a wine

Perhaps you think you need, it for lack of actual wine ;<)

Sending a hug!

I must admit I actually don’t have tv in my house for more than 10 years now for that reason. The news get to me one way or another too, but I don’t go out looking for them. Life seems rather grey even without listening to the news these days. Or is it just me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Life seems rather grey even without listening to the news these days. Or is it just me 🤷🏻‍♀️

No, it's not just you

Let's blame it on the news ;<)

Is it Winter, where you're staying? That might add to the greyness.

Luckily, there's still lots of ( natural ) colors to enjoy out here. Green and blue are two of my favorites! 💚💙

P.S. What's a TV?

Just kidding. I also haven't had one for over a decade.
I try to select what I watch, which is sometimes easier said than done.

Yeah, lack of sun is surely adding to it. I try to supplement vitamin D, but still I have little energy for anything 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s been a challenging year, but I’m doing what I can to feel better.

I mainly watch Netflix these days. Now that I’m visiting my parents in Poland I watch tv with them and I must say the adverts are driving me insane 😂 15 minutes of film and 10 mins of ads. It’s crazy! I surely don’t miss the tv at home 😆

Do it like myself, no social media accounts (apart from hive), no news, no short videos. I'm basically a walking rock who knows nothing and doesn't want to know.

I don't have any other social media accounts but even Whatsapp and - at times - Hive ( Note to self: I should not check 'trending' or 'hot' ) are too 'political' for me, some days.

Cheers to the 'walking rock' attitude!

Ah! And I love the 'don't recommend this channel' feature on Youtube xDD

Nice one. I even try to avoid YouTube. Too much crap out there too.

It's useful to learn how 18th century battle ships worked or the effectiveness of long swords vs. armored cavalry or even to watch ppl blow stuff using a ww2 88 cannon and that sortta stuff

I much rather play the game 'Monkey Island', to get a sense of that ( are you familiar with that? )

Nooup, what's that?

...and hardly ever in a positive way...

The news is almost never beneficiary to the masses. It is just another heavy burden to push us deeper into misery, which is unfair.

I don't usually check the news either, and this is because I haven't found any that is news worthy in the past long years.

I don't usually check the news either, and this is because I haven't found any that is news worthy in the past long years.

The news stopped being actual 'news' a long time ago. It should be re-named into 'fear propaganda' or 'fear porn' or preferably something that makes it less attractive to check
but then again: fear sells and people who are afraid are easier to control and the governments know that all too well.
💚

Sadly, the government's do, and that is not good. But they don't care. We just have to learn how to manage the news as citizens.

Right, sad but true: they don't care.

They just want to govern our ments minds.
Not checking the news is one way to keep our minds clear(er).
💚

Yes, and keeping our minds clearer is the sane thing to do in our world right now. I hope you are well.

I try my best. Not having a t.v or reading newspapers help. But I do still like to remain informed, through other ways.
Yes it can get me down, even feeling hopeless at times but then I remember that, that is exactly how those who believe they have the power want us to feel, hopeless and in fear.
So yes here's to being outside in nature, revelling in her beauty.
Big hug xxxxx

I get that. I doubt news is 'information' these days though but I guess it depends on the sources.

Sometimes I wonder if I even want to be informed, unless it would be 'news' to look forward to. Most of it sure isn't benefiting us but you know that.

but then I remember that, that is exactly how those who believe they have the power want us to feel, hopeless and in fear.

True that.

So yes here's to being outside in nature, revelling in her beauty.

I second this 💚

Un grande abrazo!

Since the time of Corona, I have stopped watching the news

#hive #posh

Since the time of Corona, I have stopped watching the news

A wise decision.
I am sure this 'break' hasn't made you feel worse.

nothing can beat nature when it comes to beauty and persistence.

and at the same time we are all part of it. Many seem to forget that
💚

Yeah, it's better to watch out for nature than read and add news on our problems. 😅

No doubt about that.
💚

It get to a time where I lived there is so much toxic in the newsfeed of my nations that I actually stop listening to the news around

The toxicity is worldwide. The news and what it does to our mental and physical health is the biggest 'virus' of them all.

Nature is a gift from God to us and that is why we have to keep enjoying it even though we may not be in a good mood at all times

Nature sure is a gift and it's right there, for us, to enjoy it.
Hard to so do though if our eyes are glued to screens,
unless we, perhaps, stare at other people's pictures of nature ;<)
💚

Actually news brings negativity and a kind of strange feeling. Now I watch news only 30 minutes 😅 social media even more dangerous. It is best to spend time with nature :-)

Even only 30 minutes of poison is still 30 minutes of poison ;<)
then again, I know that my mom, for instance, reads the entire newspaper, up till the announcements of those who have died, watches the news and listens to it on the radio too.

That would drive me insane.

but I guess we all do what we can to keep things under control and some are better at it than others and probably less sensitive or more brainwashed...

💚

A single cow? Is it the one standing in front of the pole?

Funny thing about the news is that there's rarely anything new to witness x.x

And about having to go to lower states before wisdom comes, I think that's pretty much how the cycle of life works wherever you look so all good I suppose
