Sharing is daring

in #sharing28 days ago

I've been spending quite a few months curating redditposh shares as of late, it's one of those things that takes quite a bit of time and at times can get a bit overwhelming, but I believe spending voting power on such activities is quite important for our ecosystem because there's still so many who don't know about us. Naturally this isn't just coming from an altruistic point of view, sure a lot of people would be way better off if they shared their content on hive because as has been proven for many years now, we do value people with layer 1 rewards so they can earn some value here no matter how influential or big they are outside of hive. So it'd be dumb to pretend that if we didn't have more users, our token would naturally appreciate in value and demand, not from those same users buying it, but investors and speculators wanting to get in on the action, but that's just a side-effect that's occurred quite a few times in our lifetime if you count both the chain's market history.

Hive is quite unique in that sense, I saw a tweet the other day of a giant web3 gaming company shutting down again and someone was talking about how they were paying influencers to promote their thing. It's all so web2 in my eyes. They're paying people with a lot of followers and a lot of likes and retweets on twitter for shilling their games, getting paid in said token so they are incentivized to talk well about it to cause the token to pump so they can profit off of their own followers. It's all quite icky to me but can't say I don't see similar activities on Hive from time to time as well.

and hey, I'm not completely innocent in that regard either, I do speak well about my own tokens like zing for instance when I find it appropriate. I try to share how it had a fair launch token-wise, how team and founders didn't get rewarded in the token just for having created it - i.e. how they had to buy into it themselves or invest like everyone else did when it launched and throughout. But it's not like I go around asking people to constantly consider buying it, helping crowdfund it, etc, etc, even at times where I worry I may be "centralizing" the token by being one of the few still buying it, I don't think that's necessarily an issue since it's the free markets and anyone has the chance to do the same as me, now if it was a governance token and I'd use my big stake to make drastic/unpopular/selfish changes, then sure it'd be an actual worry.

The thing with POSH however, and to get back on track of what I wanted to discuss today, is that I'm kind of "whatever" about it. I do hold some tokens and have plans to purchase more in the future, but different from Zing I don't earn anything from running and having created it. I haven't "paid" myself with hive for all the hours and hours that have gone into it, same can't be said about the devs who've spent time fine-tuning it and making it work on different platforms, but that's fine because they could've spent that time on other things, they didn't ask for too much - often nothing, and it is after all a project that benefits all hive stakeholders - not just a few. The "whatever" mentality behind it is that if the community/hive stakeholders deem it not as valuable as the amount it is receiving from the reward pool to use for it, adjustment of rewards and downvotes wouldn't affect me personally. Sure it would feel like a waste having spent all this time developing it but it wouldn't mean the end of the project, a lot of people still do certain activities on hive even if it doesn't instantly get them rewards.

Either way, I wanted to talk about some things I've noticed that have felt a bit weird seeing some reactions behind the sharing activity.

There's been a few instances where an author had their post shared by someone and they requested the sharer to delete the share and not share their content outside of Hive again. This I do find kind of strange. Why would you not want your content shared outside of Hive?

Because to me, and I think something that was even written in the original whitepaper of the chain, rewards are meant to bring traffic to the ecosystem, i.e. the rewards pool. Sure it has great usecases for many other things but the way it has been going for a long time, a lot of authors have gotten way overrewarded compared to web2 metrics. Can you imagine a post with 5 views, 0 comments receiving $10 in rewards on web2? Here this is quite a common thing. Although I don't agree with it we all know that using your downvotes would cause an avalanche of drama, negativity, etc, so most of the time we don't question or act upon such "curation".

It's kind of wild to then also be against the posts getting shared, however, since that's like one of the few ways you could justify the rewards if the content can be popular on websites like reddit where there's potetnailly 10,000x more consumers than here. You're saying your content posted publically on an immutable open source blockchain, visible to anyone who happens to stumble upon it, without adrevenue on most front-ends, without the blockchain in any way being able to differentiate between your text and anyone else's, that you don't want others to potentially earn a little value for having spent time sharing your post in the right place in front of hundreds if not thousands of consumers that may bring some value to this platform through views or potential new signups. Signups that could become new followers of yours, new consumers and engagement which we often lack.

Luckily this has only been a minority of people against content being shared, but just the other day I saw someone else asking someone to delete the share and they were someone involved with redditposh themselves. I.e. they actively share other people's posts too and they asked someone to not share theirs. Wild. Naturally if you wanna be the one to share your own post, you have the advantage to do so because for other sharers to find your post and share it, it takes time, whereas you know when you're about to hit "post", you can do it before anyone else, lol.

There was also a case of a community just straight up having muted the redditposh account so teh comments wouldn't be "visible" in the comment section, but after a quick discussion with one of the leaders recently they agreed that it wasn't just like any other "comment bot spam" and decided to unmute it which I was happy about.

Anyway, I don't wanna shoo off any potential new sharers with my title and these few examples I've written about here, I'd welcome more people to participate but may have to warn you that reddit can be quite strict at times and require a bit of a learning curve to get used to using it properly. We do have some assistance through @x-rain's contest posts, the pinned post on @poshtoken with tested subreddit's that don't mine hive links being shared on there. So there's room for more sharers and hopefully also a higher percentage of the reward pool going towards this activity that I feel has been lacking for a long time in this ecosystem and many don't care much if it exists or happens as long as they get their piece of the pie.

Something many also may take for granted or not realize is that POSH may be one of the main reasons we are quite active on twitter still, even though our rewarding mechanism there got shut down by their API cost requirements, we have lingered on and continued to show strength there when it comes to our ecosystem and everything involved within.

Anyway, that's it for today, just a bit of a random post with some thoughts. No borders and a lot of freedom leaves room for a lot of different reactions and opinions which is great, but some times it can leave you a bit baffled and confused as well, I'm sure this has happened to many of you on different occasions about different hive things. Thanks for reading.

Sort:

There's a difference between sharing something here among a community of like-minded people where there's some interaction and taking it and placing it on another platform entirely and putting it under the noses of people who neither know or nor care about the poster, what their life is like or what they are trying to do. Yes, it's on the blockchain and it's immutable, but anyone who cared would have to come and look for it and do some work to find it.

We've had posters in Saturday Savers Club in precarious positions economically, posting for support for how they are trying to turn their lives around and they've been exposed to the braying cesspit that is Twitter. There are other people on here that have fled violence. There is something about being discriminating about what is shared: what is it about the shared post that is going to bring eyes to Hive, rather than just sharing everything and without regard for the poster or their situation.

Then there are people like me who don't want to support the Facebook and Twitter models, and I want to do that even less now watching how the tech bros have such traction in the States. I doubt I ever write anything that is sufficiently interesting for sharing on reddit 😂.

There is a case for sharing some posts and that's great and I've seen some impressive numbers for views. There's work involved and if sharers are getting some rewards for sharing, that's great, too. I ask only that there is some care about what is shared.

Read this earlier but forgot to reply/curate, yes i agree, there are certain cases the sharers should be careful about not sharing. Maybe when posh becomes more commonplace authors could add a footer/note to specifically not share certain posts to make it clear. As I just wrote in another comment, we don't incentivize spamming shares as it'd be a bad look for hive on reddit/other platforms and potentially get the accounts in trouble and shine a bad light on our project/hive, so hopefully sharers take good care of what it is they're sharing so it's not posts that are inappropriate to be shared as some of the examples you mention here.

Yeah, I know you and I have had some of these conversations elsewhere but I thought it would be useful to share them for a wider audience.

Hope you enjoy your holiday when you get there!

Absolutely agree with you and really appreciate your work here. It's crucial for the ecosystem that people invest time into outreach, many still have no idea about Hive’s unique model, and this grassroots sharing is how platforms grow sustainably. The comparison to web2, where big companies throw money at influencers to create superficial hype, really hits home. Hive truly stands out by rewarding authentic contributors, regardless of their background, and that's something worth preserving and building on.

I’ve also noticed some content creators develop a sense of entitlement to rewards, feeling they're owed simply for spending time here. But nobody on web2 is guaranteed fair compensation for their efforts either, viral posts with significant impact sometimes receive nothing, and popularity doesn’t always equal rewards. Hive’s reward pool is a privilege and a tool to incentivize growth, not an automatic paycheck, and it’s important for people to see it as such, especially when they're already benefitting from a decentralized, transparent system.

It’s honestly confusing to see authors not wanting their content shared beyond Hive, given that greater visibility benefits everyone and justifies the existence of the reward pool. At the end of the day, if we want Hive to remain vibrant, we need more contributors, more sharing activity, and above all, understanding that rewards are tied to platform-wide engagement, not just individual effort. Thanks for all you do to keep that spirit alive!

Yeah the entitlement can be kind of weird from people who barely have any consumers. Like sure, we all feel like we should get some rewards, but for some it may easily go to their heads or they get used to autovotes and keep setting higher and higher goals and expect that to just keep increasing no matter what they post/how much effort they put into their posts/social engagement/etc.

Why would you not want your content shared outside of Hive?

Some are considering Hive as their safe place, where they can share everything and don't want their content on web2, so no one they know would discover it.

We had a case years ago, when the user from a heavily religion controlled country shared some photos that could put you in jail, even put your life in danger in those countries (while in developed countries those photos are totally normal) and someone they knew got onboarded on Hive and could have caused problems. Interestingly their first reaction was to ask us (community mods), to ban the other user. They don't understand web3 and definitely don't understand blockchain.

Sure, I guess I didn't think of that example, and the one I had in mind I feel like wasn't because of that as the author may not be from such a location, but yeah. I'd understand some instances and I've also told sharers to respect the wishes of authors that may not want their content shared for any reason, it's just some times it felt like it was coming from the wrong place and a few times even made clear it was because of the earning aspect. "why are they earning this much for sharing my content", while ignoring that it was seperate from content curation and that they'd still get a cut for it, albeit not as much as the sharer, which they didn't appreciate.

Yeah, they don't understand how this works, and some people are weird too. After almost 8 years on the chain, I guess you agree with me 😂

I just find amazing the amount of people you can reach on reddit, it's hundred of thousands, something exceptional for a hive article... Even just add to favorites on browser a hive profile by some redditor might on long time tempt him to sign up...

Obviously doesn't make much sense to share everything here that's immutable and be afraid to be shared on web2 🤣

Sharing is daring

It actually takes a bit of strength to do. It can be fun, but it can also be mentally exhausting, especially in HivePosh competitions. For me, it has been nice just supporting the team, plus there’s the extra bonus of HP delegation and rewards. For those who don’t like the competition, you can simply share posts and still get rewarded.

It is also one of the best ways to test how your content resonates with a wider audience. I think all content creators should try it, as feedback can be constructive, and I’ve learned a lot from the experience. :)

There's everything in this world. I'd particularly love and am very happy when you share something of mine on web2 and web3. It makes me feel like I'm doing a good job. I love this project. Introducing Hive is one of the best jobs I've ever had, as it benefits us all. Those who don't understand it must have other interests or priorities.
My priority right now is Hive and I know that many are in this great dream of Hive growing and being recognized as the best blockchain on the web3.
We will continue to promote our beloved platform.

I've been on Hive for about a month now, and I get learn new things about the ecosystem pretty much every day. I guess I'll have to check out POSH. Is there kind of a central place that curates these projects?

Sorry I'm new here I'm confused about web2?

web2 is basically non-blockchain things, databases with a single point of attack in most cases, like facebook, reddit, banks, etc where if an attacker gets through they can steal information, leak personal details, etc, which can't happen on web3, here it's usually just a single user that can get affected at a time.

Yea, why would anyone want NOT to share something they posted already? 🤔

Thanks for sharing your random thoughts 😉
They made me think about some stuff, as I try to invest a lot of time and development into the Hive community myself. Will let these word sink in, and try to steer accordingly! 🙏😉

Thanks for sharing the post. To be honest I kind of missed everything involving POSH because of taking care of my daughter the past months. This blog makes me very curious and I’m going to invest time to look at it so I can understand it better. I can see the potential in it, so it was a great read

Took a look at your recent posts, I'm sorry to hear about your daughter. :(

Yeah take your time with redditposh and reddit itself, better slow and steady than to overuse it as many keep reporting getting banned easily on there. Probably a mix of regular usage of reddit along with some link sharing is the best way forward.

Threw you a follow to see if I can read more about your daughters health in the future, hoping for the best!

That is very sweet, thank you for taking the time and the info for the Reddit usage 🙏

That's a bit of a frustrating thankless task isn't it?

As long as it makes hive more known I'm okay doing it!

Right ok, I get you but don't envy you. :P

It is partially why I need some vacation soon as I wrote in my previous post. xD

That and @holozing development

Sigh - Last time I had a vacation was 2008. No I lied - I had a 2 day break in 2010 :D

the posh initiative to share hive posts on reddit is savage. its SO hard to do. the times ive tried my comments get removed right away. the reddit admin probably have flags for when hive links are shared

I mean if you look at @redditposh/comments you can see that that's not the case, but it may depend from account to account

more power to them man! its totally rad for people to do this!

That reminded me. I just shared one on Reddit there.

Posh is the best thing for me as an author. When I start writing I know that there's the potential for thousands to see me and all this without paying Google ads to run Campaign. I myself would be confused why anyone wouldn't want more attention on what they write. I never miss the opportunity of sharing my own content. Many blessings to those behind the project, it brings so much value. I was even watching the view count of my article yesterday and was shocked to see hundreds in views. This project is the absolute best thing. More encouragement to you too Acidyo you're sacrificing a lot for the good of Hive

I guess I can understand some posts that may be personal, etc, like some in the comments have mentioned, so always good for sharers to thoroughly check what it is they're sharing. Thankfully we also don't incentivize spamming so hopefully that's not the case often.

The team behind the project is smart and I know Hive will do well because of you guys

Interesting perspective! This is the reason why Hive feels very different from the web2 platforms. Crazy that some people don’t want their posts shared. The effort you are giving doesn’t go unnoticed, huge respect! Great write-up 🌷

The opportunity to gain new followers and increase traffic to our ecosystem is huge. We should continue to promote awareness about how sharing can help everyone involved.

Just be very careful sharing on Reddit, my 5+ year old account got permanently banned from Reddit for a single post about Hive.

Have you tried appealing the ban?

I did so recently after a mod took offense at something I wrote and it got my 3 day reddit ban revoked.

I tried appealing, but it is still banned. I read that in most cases it makes sense to create a new Reddit account...

sounds like what hivewatchers may force some people to do at times :p

Curious if you have any data on posh onboarding number and retention rates, I recently launched a interactive animated series (low key onboarding effort) would love if you check it out and let me know your thoughts

It's hard to know onboarding numbers since we can't track them, we can't share ref links as that'd instantly get users banned on reddit, we can only see how much traffic is converted into views on the few front-ends that have a working view counter such as peakd and ecency (inleo hasn't had it working in forever).

I see so no "funnel" for the potentially new users ? And my bad forgot to share the link 🤣 , it includes the first episode https://ecency.com/hive-177682/@hive-160668/fourth-wall-street-animated-series-launch-2xt

I mean they get here and they see rewards to posts and comments and they can click "sign up", dunno what else we'd need to do in this day and age, think most people understand they have to register, hopefully hive keys won't make it too difficult however.

Fair enough but you got to keep in mind new user rentetion is hard with social apps with hive it is much harder so we need to try and make the process and the community as welcoming as possible

Hi @acidyo, after a full month of being on redditpost, I feel really happy to be there. The hive has become more developed there, and many people like my recipes. As a recipe writer, this is very rewarding for me. Although yesterday I was disappointed with a new account who redditposted a post that I had already redditposted in the same community. He did redditposh right at the time of the prize disbursement, he did it and I didn't think it was good. However, I think it's already happened and I just reprimanded him, I'm not sure if this is a good or wrong thing to do. But I feel like my recipes and my writing are very important, and this is mine. I am still very new here and I still have a lot to learn about redditposh.

Yesterday I had a problem with my reddit account, I found no comments on the hive, even though I had linked the link on reddit. I've posted it on a few different communities and I'm seeing the same results. This is one of them

Hello @acidyo … I am also new at Reddit and it is really a great platform and i am excited to begin a good part of that platform…
As I am new and I am in learning process I have 2 issue … one is same of @nurfay … I share my first recipe post and I didn’t get any comment on my hive post
And second post I share about travelling… I share me own work and 2 days ago I received payout but I only get 20% .
Would be happy if you can help me and guide me 😀
Thank you 🤩

Hey! Your Reddit account isn't linked to Hive. Link it on https://hiveposh.com/

Ohh … but I did it and that time it was show successfully linked … may be I did something not properly while linked my account… I’ll again do it … thank you so much for the help 😀

🙂 Give me please your Reddit account name

mysteriousroad1

Thanks! I checked if you had been banned - no, you hadn't.

Link your Reddit account to Hive on hiveposh.com again, please... And tell me when you'll make this.

We have unfortunately had to ban you for reasons we cannot publicize here as it would give others hints as to how to avoid such detection in the future, I'm sorry but it's not really something we can do about it if we wanna keep the project fair.

Do you mean i'm permanently block on redditposh? If yes, I will inevitably have to respect your decision. Again, I'm very new to redditposh, I'm still learning a lot about the rules, including reading some of x-train's posts.

We'll be looking over your cases once more here soon, sorry for the inconvenience if you're innocent, there's been some users trying to spam redditposh lately which has made it difficult to combat abuse.

Thank you very much for your time @acidyo I am waiting for the good news, I hope that my account will get better there soon.

You and @arasiko have been unbanned from POSH, thanks for your patience. Happy sharing!

I am very grateful for your help @acidyo, I can finally get back to reddit posting my recipes.

Thank you for mentioning my name and helping me. I am very happy. :)

Sure thing 💯.
Promoters be sharing to get used to the native token

So I've been playing with it and gotten a wee bit of posh from reddit, and I think I won 1 at some point. But what can I do with posh tokens other than swamp em for hive.(Which isn't a bad use case but I'm not sure it's sustainable as the only purpose of the token)
