sammy:

I'm familiar with "the human shadow" as explained by Carl Jung. A good example of this idea is in the Arthurian legend, when the knights of the round table were told to search for the holy grail, they were instructed to enter the darkest part of the forest that surrounded Camelot in order to find the grail.

You might imagine that there would be an "objectively" "darkest" part of the forest and they'd all go together to face whatever challenges it might offer, but instead, they each examined the forest for themselves and entered the part that they personally believed was the "darkest" part, which led them to become separated. Galahad went in one direction and Lancelot in another direction and Arthur in yet another direction.

yeah, ok, but i don't see what that has to do with self-acceptance.
i'm NOT talking about king arthur and i think you're just trying to change the subject in order to avoid examining yourself.

Do you remember that movie, "Kumaré"?

are you talking about that stupid movie where some asshole tricks a bunch of people as some sort of sick joke?

That's not how I'd describe it.

maybe i'm thinking of another movie, can you please get to the point?

sammy:

The movie I'm thinking of is about a guy who grew up surrounded by gurus and Hindu mythology and still never really believed any of it. It all seemed like goofy non-sense to them. And yet, he was fascinated by the devotion of the followers who seemed to find so much "meaningfulness" in these idiotic sounding teachings.

So, in order to explore and attempt to understand why people were so devoted to these phonies, he decided to visit the Arizona / California guru scene, dressed in traditional robes, grew out his beard, and adopted the accent and mannerisms of his beloved grandmother.

Sid:
yeah, that's the same movie i was talking about. that guy was just an asshole.

sammy:

Right, so the scene that I remember was some scene where he had been hired to do some private sessions for some very wealthy individual, and they were asking, "are you one with everything?" and they were like, "yes" and then he asked, "do you love all living beings?" and they were like, "of course", and then he showed them a framed picture of Adolf Hitler and asked them, "do you feel love for this man?" and the student fumbled, "of course not". This is a mirror. You think this is a photo of someone else, but it is actually a mirror.

That's the "human shadow".

Accepting the "shadow" within yourself.

Accepting that you are capable of all things humans are capable of.

You are not "better" than anyone else.

I think it says exactly the same thing as your "video suggestion" and I think it will help us bridge the gap between our disparate perceptions.

Sid:

i don't know, i just don't see the point of anything anymore. why do people try and fix "big problems"? nothing's really going to change. humans are fundamentally flawed. even if things get "better", they'll inevitably get "worse" again. it's better to just focus on things you can control directly.

sammy:

You look for "high-quality" signal.

A couple of days ago I posted a bunch of links to this rare video that most people would describe as "weird nonsense" and I got one reply from an account that doesn't really say much and mostly just posts images and memes and they said, "nice hammer".

And that got me thinking.

It's like building a hammer.

It has to be short enough to infect someone before they can reject it.

Perhaps only one word.

But there's a problem with that too.

It can be too short.

Like "nirvana".

Is there a better word than "nirvana"?

By any definition it's "peace" "calm" "happiness" "meditation".

Isn't that what everyone wants?

If only we could spread the word, that word.

Well, how do you spread a word?

You have to make it "popular".

Well, isn't that what Kurt Cobain did?

And now the word "nirvana" has lost all meaning.

When you say "nirvana" people just think of "a rock band" or "suicide".

I mean, a few people may have been curious enough to look into it and a very small percentage of those people may have actually taken the time to practice, but even most of those people are missing the point of it.

"If you don't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?"

Now, that's a nice hammer.

Phrasing something as a short question engages the mind in ways that a single word can't.

It's like the genius of the teasers for the movie "The Matrix".

"what is the matrix?" was the tagline.

Or, "got milk?"

Two words, both single syllables (power words) and a noun.

And not only a noun, but one of the very first words an infant learns.
