Value, Money & Worth: A Sense Of Entitlement?

A sense of entitlement always comes from offering value and expecting a reward in return, however, because we have different or distinctive definitions of value, it's always difficult to measure value, especially from a giver and receiver's point of view.

I've seen jobs online where the employees are asked to weigh themselves in dollars and put a figure to how much they're worth after they've offered proof of what they can offer. Let's look at this scenario.

In Nigeria, people with Ph.D. or an MSC mostly value themselves based on the degree they have and not the skills they're willing to offer and this is because they've spent a lot of money to acquire these degrees.

Preference To Skills & Experience

Spending money and time on a venture brings a certain expectation of returns, that's why some people value themselves on what they've spent to acquire certain enablement rather than the skill they have to offer itself. It's why people often overestimate their abilities and wrongly place a worth on the value they're going to offer.

One of the reasons why some job opportunities ask people to provide working experiences is because the skills they've acquired through these experiences are what might determine how well they'll do.

So in the world, it's difficult to value ourselves monetarily, unless we're self-employed and managed to build a successful business venture on our own, without this, our worth is often in the salaries we get from some jobs.

Value, Worth & Accomplish

However, we might say there is an intrinsic worth that these companies are not seeing in us, it'll be sentimental to say we hold intrinsic value without having achieved anything with this "worth" we claim to have.

The sense of entitlement is often embedded in everyone because we feel that we're valuable and anything we give out should be proportionally measured based on our assessment of who we are. Don't get me wrong.

A lot of people are overvalued, while some people are undervalued. But everyone industry in the world will never value people the same way. For example, an average footballer player might be earning $10,000 a week, while a hardworking CEO of a tech company that same 10k a week.

The Incessant Craze For Relevance

If their roles were switched, they'll not be valued the same way anymore. It's the way the world works, sometimes the value we place on ourselves might be aggrandizing. However, if we're working a job that overestimates our abilities and skills and pays even when our productivity isn't evenly matched.

It might be that we've been valuable over time, bringing in deals and enriching the company so even when we attain diminishing returns and no longer deliver, they might still keep paying for passive services.

The world is plagued with jobs where one's worth is based on the level of productivity that they can offer on a daily, this is why some people achieve nothing even if they spend 30 years working in a particular establishment.

Self-Investment; The Right Form Of Value?

In reality, everyone needs a job that outrightly values them the way they'll value themselves because it brings a sense of belonging, fairness, and worth. However, these jobs are difficult to come by.

Sometimes it's oddly good to undervalue ourselves especially if we're working hard to improve.

Some people place themselves at the uttermost pinnacle of worth, because of the self-investment they've made in themselves but the truth is, we cannot cajole people to measure us exactly the way we'd measure ourselves and this is why we have to constantly improve ourselves to be worth the value we see in ourselves.

Value is relative. Everyone has their own metrics against which they measure something’s value or worth, and so the reasons for which you consider yourself valuable might not pass another person, so it is important to not overestimate yourself, but equally important to not sell yourself short also. Either of these will leave you in a bad position.

I don’t know why, but starstrings story of having worked for an company that payed him $20 monthly was on my mind reading this post. I guess it had something to do with how valuable the company considered him at the time, and the fact that he was selling himself short. The same starstrings today will not work something like that if hell froze over because he’s more valuable and his worth is appreciated here on Hive.

In Nigeria, the way we measure value is quite bizzare and some institutions in Nigeria will pay you poorly not because they don't know your worth but because there's unemployment in the country and you'll have no choice but to accept that money they're offering you.
So most times people do not even underestimate themselves it is their jobs who underestimate them, the economic situations make them doubt their worth and due to this, we have so many institutions who value people poorly.

The situation is close to the same here in Ghana, but I think even though the pay is not the best here, it is still decent enough and institutions do not undervalue you per se. They just don’t pay you as much as you’d want them to, or as much as you’d expect. Wait, maybe that’s undervaluing, idk🤷🏽‍♂️.

Value money and worth and accomplishment, you are a geneuis men go to get this into tables sharing idea and advice about nature is indeed the right steps, more knowledge 😍

My experience tells me that the sense of entitlement starts at school. I had this experience where the school makes the student believe that their course is the best of all the others. I know that the purpose of this is to encourage and motivate the students to learn more but it has negative impact as well. I met a lot of person in different areas thinking too high of themselves because of the title and degree attached to them.

There are also a lot of course finishers that are jobless. The truth is, they just don't do other jobs outside of their expertise. They believe that doing any blue-collar jobs is not worth their value.

Thanks for sharing.

I hope that my comment is not out of topic. 😁

Well I don't seem to blame them, sometimes titles, accomplishments are what sticks, these are the things that humans recognize before they can attach any form of value to that person. However I think, personal development goes a long way because we need to firstly work hard to create the essential value that would make us relevant.

Sorry for the late reply, it was very hectic for me yesterday.

I hope that my comment is not out of topic. 😁

You're right on point.

No worries, you're just right on time. 😊

Self development is the best way to have more value to ourself because this type value bring us after from the crown and even in an unknown country or anywhere we find ourselves our expertise will always be needed

Exactly, I think in Nigeria for example people have become too dependent on themselves. We call it hustling, but if you do not do so how do we develop thick skin and provide a better future for ourselves? Thanks for coming through bro.

Some people place themselves at the uttermost pinnacle of worth, because of the self-investment they've made in themselves but the truth is, we cannot cajole people to measure us exactly the way we'd measure ourselves and this is why we have to constantly improve ourselves to be worth the value we see in ourselves.

I think we can. If we keep churning out good results, people will start to add those values to us. And before you know it, recommendations starts coming in, and if we keep working on ourselves, constantly improving, we will begin to look like some gods and goddesses because folks will be vowed by our infinite abilities to pull certain things off.

Undoubtedly so. However there is this bizarre situation where people tends to understand your worth but there's still tend to undervalue undervalue your efforts. However, this wouldn't deter our aims to do better for ourselves. Thanks for coming through.

Even as we are looking for money placing worth on ourselves is important. Like learning skills and being advantaged than people in that same Field(self- investment)
You really don't need to strive much if you build yourself

You've said it all, we've just gotta offer a little more because life itself is a competition and we should try to give "more", that "more" distinguishes us from the others.
