Are You a "Jack of All Trades, Master Of None?"

Throughout the years I've had many tell me that I am multitalented and have lots of knowledge over many things, which is kind of true because I always was a very curious child. I know my parents had trouble raising me as they could never stick me to one single thing. One moment I'm was learning how to play guitar and the next I'm already taking interest in learning how to play drums. All these traits transformed quite nicely as I grew older both personally and professionally. At least that's what I want to believe.

The phrase "Jack of All Trades, Master of None" has quite a negative caveat around it. It's usually understood as a person having a lack of focus and passion which is quite further from the truth. There is a misunderstanding that a person who multitasks usually fails while ignoring the fact that they are quite versatile and have a diverse skillset.

Professionally, my work revolves around doing stuff with computers. Over the years, I've learned quite a few things like graphics designing, web and mobile application development, digital marketing, and even blogging. Truth is, I get bored easily doing the same thing for a long period of time and the curiosity always gets the better of me. So far I don't have mastery over any topics but having diverse knowledge does help me in freelancing. I'm able to accept many kinds of work which I wouldn't have if I knew only for eg designing.

Even in programming, a Full Stack developer has the role of doing many tasks that otherwise require additional manpower. Full-stack developers are proficient in both backend(serverside) and frontend(client-side) coding. You can see how a company can see this as a benefit, but it also depends upon the type of the company.

The best part of being a jack of all trade is the option of being flexible and adaptable. The expansive skillset makes it possible to do different kinds of jobs. They may not be perfect at their job, but they have to ability to get the job done. Jack of all trades are good learners and they keep learning through most stages of their lives.

What About Master of One?

Well, I'm not one of those people but I can see how they can be really precious in many industries. They possess expertise in a certain skill and are really good at it. Since the master of one is expert in his field, his work is of great quality. He is really productive, efficient, and flawless. The person can get the title of a specialist in his field which Jack will rarely do.

I like to explore lots of things and learn many things. I'll probably never master any field but that's the way I like. Having many options for land definitely seems more advantageous to me. Besides, I don't plan to do 9-5 jobs all my life. I want to be a freelancer or maybe own a business. I know I'll need lots of skills when that day comes. :)

Good post @the100. I was also curious to learn in many fields and specially focused on sports. But I have to quit it because of my family pressure and problems and now I'm looking for jobs so I can feed my family. Dreams are not meant to poor childrens.

I know how you feel. I was also raised in a family where there were financial problems left and right. Keep working on it, you may put your dreams on hold for now, but things can and will get better. Good Luck.

Yes that the main mantra. Trying to do my best to get good results out of it.

I understand how one might say that if he's a highly specialised person he's of great value, but I worked with some of those people and sometimes he would make our(me and another teammate) work harder by not having any idea what we do. I guess there was also a lack of communication in our team that gave us some problems😅

Oh man, I can really relate to that. Nothing is worse than working with someone who assumes that we already knows what he knows 🙄 . That 1 minute of hints puts hours if not days of agony and research which could have easily been avoided. Communication is really important especially on larger project, but i know there is always one guys who doesn't know what he's doing or suppose to be doing. 😂

Is better to be skilled and have knowledge about many things than be a specialist in only one from a survival point of view but this society values more the specialists.

One soccer player can win much more than a very talented artist in several disciplines like Leonardo was. Sad but true, anyways I wouldn't have any regret about having multiple interests. I always liked the science although I have way more knowledge about literature and arts.

Yes I agree with you. Life is too short to be doing only one things. I too like exploring many things even though knowing that I might never master anything.
It's awesome that you too are very keen into knowledge. Have a great day :)

It's quite an interesting conundrum to ponder on. My profile is literally "Jack of all trades, master of some"... and it's given my thought to the things that I can actually master, if there are any XD! There's never a wrong or right when it comes to this, and I guess there are different ways or understanding of what it means to master something. How much calibration, efficiency, and perfection would make you a master, I wonder.

When you consider the diversity of mankind and how many different roles we each undertake, there's always those looking to have a good understanding on multiple subjects, and keep learning to find new ones. They have a wide array of interests, and never stop at just one or a few. There are also those that aim to only master one discipline in life, perfecting their craft at that subject and do the best at it.

All is welcome, and if it suffices to make you happy, then you're likely going the right way :-)

Yeah, I actually decided to write about it after seeing it on your profile. There are lots of things I am good at but I'm no specialist or master in any one of those. I've read a few articles that say it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate practice in order to master any skill and I don't think I have that much dedication to do that. 😄
As you said, we should do what makes us happy, and exploring different things is what I like to do. This will likely be more apparent as I post more stuff here as well :)

Cheers, it's always great to see new posts from you. I also don't think I have 10,000 hours of patience, which leads me to suggest that my "mastery" of things is only based on personal perception 😁. The key would be showing off confidence in displaying to people that you seem to know what you're doing, even though you don't have a clue on the subject!
