Hi!

We got more snow today. I hope it's going to stay. The temperatures haven't really stayed below 0°C long enough for a sufficient frost.

When I picked up Leo from my father yesterday, we took with us a packet of something Leo had baked with his grandpa; smaller versions of kalakukko, they penned the term "kalakukkoset" (plural of "kalakukkonen", where the "-nen" postfix denotes small size).

Kalakukko itself is a pastry where fish and animal fat (usually bacon) will be baked inside a rye crust. One of the most popular types of kalakukko dishes in Finland, is a muikkukukko that is filled with European cisco (vendace, Coregonus albula).

The word "kalakukko" is often mistakenly (and nonsensically) translated to mean "fish rooster", while in this use, the word "kukko" most likely does not mean the bird, but the form of the closed pastry.

The Finnish word "kukkaro" means a purse or wallet, and is probably also the original meaning of "kukko".

They were quite yummy!

See ya!

Cheers~

What fun for Grandpa to allow Leo to learn to bake so young, taking some home is rewarding. Children remember days like this forever so be sure to ask for the recipe, one day your son will be looking for it @gamer00 start keeping family recipes for the future generation.
