Greetings Steemians!
Last weekend I went on a hiking trip along the Swabian Jura, a low mountain range in southern Germany. I had decided to start my excursion in the beautiful Donau-Town Ulm. Ulm is located at the foot of the Jura hills and also the ideal starting point to visit the world famous archeological excavation sites of the Lone and Ach valley. Some of them have become UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2017. I invite you to follow me there in an upcoming post of this series.
But for now, let's have a look at Ulm's emblem, the Ulm Minster. I had arrived in Ulm on late friday evening with just a couple hours of daylight left. So I quickly unpacked, fetched my iPhone and seized the remaining sun to capture some impressions of the majestic gothic cathedral.
The Ulm Minster is Germany's largest protestant church and has the world's tallest steeple with a height of 161,5 m. Breathtaking, isn't it? Even the iPhone's wide angle lens requires quite a distance to capture the entire monument from the base up to the top.

Countless details, many of which required months or even years of a single mason's worktime. I began to miss the zoom lens of my DSLR.
A huge, 71m high scaffolding is assembled at the southern face of the cathedral to support it's ongoing restoration. The continous decomposition of the medieval sandstone requires the replacement of more than 2000 blocks. Each of it has the weight of a middle class limousine (1.5t) and needs to be lifted up the scaffold. These days with the power of electricity, a few centuries ago with a winding tackle.
Here a little fun quiz for you: which is the maximal load (in kN/m^2) that the scaffold's heavy duty lift was designed for? You can find the answer somewhere in the internet but you are welcome to simply guess. The most accurate answer will be rewarded with 1 SBD. In case of several correct answers, the first submission wins.
Evening sets in over the Minster's forecourt and Ulm's famous Schwörhaus(left). Time for me to head back to my accommodation for a good and solid dinner. Tomorrow's hike will require some extra calories!

Richtig gute Perspektive aus der steil von unten Position. Dass du dich dafür hingelegt hast, hab ich mir fast gedacht. Ich fänd's unterhaltsam, ein Foto von einem Fotografen zu sehen, der in einer lustigen Körperhaltung arbeitet, der widerum von einem anderen abgelichtet wird, der von einem Dritten aufs Bild gebannt wird. LOL.
Wenn du von der Baukunst der Kirchen beeindruckt bist, dann warst du wahrscheinlich auch schon in der Toskana? Ich war damals entzückt von der schieren Pracht der Gebäude. Am meisten beeindruckte mich die Kirche in Orvieto, die mitten in dem Ort steht (eine Burg ummauerte Stadt, wenn ich mich recht erinnere) und die wir, weil wir so lange für den Weg gebraucht hatten, erst bei Nacht erreichten. Die haben aber das Gebäude so kunstvoll beleuchtet, dass es kein Schaden war. All die unzähligen Ornamente und der Marmor, den die dort verwendet haben! Am stärksten betroffen machten mich die gemeißelten Höllen-Szenen, wo man jedes einzelne schmerzverzerrte Gesicht betrachten konnte.
In Ulm war ich nur einmal. Und leider hab ich auch von dort nur eine nebelige Nacht-Erinnerung. Jetzt hat es ein Gesicht bekommen.
Danke! Ja, das mit dem fotografieren eines Fotografen, der einen Fotographen fotografiert ist eine spannende Idee :D. Muss ich mal drüber nachdenken...
In der Toskana war ich tatsächlich schon, die Erinnerung ist aber leider nicht mehr ganz so frisch. Vor allem entsinne ich mich noch an den Dom in Siena, mit den weiss-schwarz alternierenden Steinblöcken und natürlich an Florenz. Habe im Anschluss viel über die Konstruktion und den Bau der Kuppel des Florentiner Doms gelesen - unglaublich spannend. Was damals geleistet wurde. Oft mehr mit Empirie als Berechnung.
Ulm hat mir wirklich sehr gefallen. Ich denke, ich werde mir die Stadt im Sommer nochmal ausführlicher anschauen. Hat Lust auf mehr gemacht.
Dein Beitrag hat wie gewohnt eine sehr hohe Qualität. Nicht zuletzt auch durch die sensationellen Fotos.
Auch das Panoramabild finde ich richtig klasse.
Zu meiner Bundeswehrzeit hat es mich öfter mal in das BWK (Bundeswehrkrankenhaus) Ulm verschlagen. Einen kurzen Trip in die Innenstadt habe ich auch dann auch jedes mal unternommen - aber damals v.a. auf der Suche nach coolen Szene - Plattenläden. Das war die Art Kulture, die mich damals total in den ihren Bann gezogen hatte.
Das Ulmer Münster habe ich sicherlich auch gesehen. Aber wie es eben so ist - zu der Zeit war ich ein totaler Kulturbanause - zumindest was diese Art der Kunst anbelangt - , und so habe ich das Ulmer Münster gar nicht recht wahrgenommen. Aus heutiger Sicht für mich traurig, aber eben wahr.
Das wäre heute mit Sicherheit anders.
Klar, die eigenen Präferenzen ändern sich über die Zeit. Zu meinen Zivi-Zeiten wäre das Ulmer Münster sicher auch weit unten auf meiner Checkliste bei einem Aufenthalt dort gewesen.
Ansonsten hatte ich während diese Wochenendes auch abends nochmals Zeit ein bisschen durch die Stadt zu ziehen. Es es gibt einige fast schon kiezige Bereiche mit ausgefallenen Bars, Barbecue-Küchen und viel studentisches Publikum auf den Strassen. Bin mir fast sicher, dass Du auch heute noch interessante Plattenläden in Ulm finden kannst. Dieser erste, bewusste Besuch von Ulm hat bei mir in jedem Fall Lust auf mehr gemacht.

Es ändern sich nicht nur die Präferenzen. Man lernt zum Glück auch dazu. Vielleicht bin ich sogar schon etwas weiser (nicht nur weißer in den Haaren) geworden... ;-) ;-)
Schon lange träume ich davon, einmal nach Ulm zu reisen. Du hast uns hier wunderschöne Ansichten ermöglicht und mir bestätigt, dass Ulm eine Reise wert ist!
Hi @martinamartini, ich kann einen Besuch der Stadt Ulm uneingeschränkt empfehlen. Ich konnte mir im Lauf dieses Wochenendes ja noch ein bisschen mehr anschauen und ich war regelrecht begeistert. Mittelalter und Moderne in selten schönem Einklang.

Now, about the Ulm Minster, it's really breathtaking, for a steemian that loves architecture like me, this monument is like the "bitcoin" of all cryptos, it's ancient but it's the most precious amongst all :)
By the way, on the third image, I like how you match the photos together, like a bookmatch effect :) it's almost flawless!

Do the blocks change to sandstone or to more durable material?
That is a great question! I assume that use sandstone that was sealed or coated to increase it's durability. But I don't no I have to say.
Wow wieder 1a Post! Werde mir deine Foto-Formatierungen mal abschauen, nicht böse sein aber das ist wunderschön! Aber natürlich auch weil die Fotos klasse sind! Da sieht man mal, dass man nicht unbedingt eine teure DSLR o.Ä braucht! (Auch wenn du dein Objektiv vermisst hast :p)
Gerade das Panorama Bild; Hammer! Bringt Abwechslung rein und die Stadt sieht echt schön aus. Find nur schade das gefühlt immer Gerüste um so schöne Bauten sind - aber muss eben sein.
Sehr gerne, freut mich, wenn Du aus meinen Posts Anregungen mitnehmen kannst. Das Layout der Photos habe ich im übrigen mit der App PicFrame erstellt. Sicher gibt es dafür aber auch eine kostenlose Alternative.

Wow - schöne Fotos von gigantischen Bauwerken. Wieviel Mühe hat man sich früher mit Verzierungen etc. gegeben (nicht nur bei klerikalen "Häusern") - vielleicht auch einer internen Symbolik verschrieben (Fraktale...) - jedenfalls kein Vergleich zu dem heutigen "quadratisch, praktisch gut".
Ahnung habe ich auch null, ich schreibe trotzdem etwas ;)

Ja, diese Hingabe zu den Details bei alten Bauten fasziniert mich ebenfalls. Heutzutage ist so was gar nicht mehr bezahlbar und es wird dementsprechend rationaler gebaut.
Ich muss aber sagen, dass mich in Ulm gerade auch die modernen Gebäude z.T. sehr beeindruckt haben. In vielen Fällen tolle Architektur, die sich mit einem sehr guten Gespür ins teilweise noch mittelaterliche Stadtbild einfügt. Erlebt man nicht oft.
Die Zahl stimmt nicht ganz (und auch die Einheit hat einen kleinen Zeichendreher ;) ). Aber danke fürs Vorbeischauen und Mitmachen!
Und ja, es gibt in Deutschland viel schönes zu sehen und zu erleben.

Ich habe diese Kirche auch schon besichtigt und den Turm bestiegen! Konditionell war der Aufstieg kein Problem, aber mir wurde leicht schwindelig, nicht vom Blick in die Tiefe, sondern von der Begehung der nicht enden wollenden Wendeltreppen. Glücklicherweise änderte sich ab der mittleren Plattform die Drehrichtung. Beim Abstieg war es noch schlimmer. Aber die Aussicht vom höchsten Kirchturm der Welt war es wert, sich dem Schwindel auszusetzen.
Leider hatte ich nicht mehr die Zeit für einen Aufstieg, glaube allerdings auch, dass mir das Auf-und Absteigen im engen Kreis der Wendeltreppe nicht behagt hätte. Der erste Eindruck von Ulm hat mir aber tatsächlich so gut gefallen, dass ich beschlossen habe mir die Stadt bei Gelegenheit noch ausführlicher anzuschauen. Der Aufstieg auf den Münsterturm wird dann auf jeden Fall nachgeholt.

Holly cow... this is seriously breathtaking! It reminds me of sagrad la familia, in Spain. Insane that someone built this. Thanks for sharing. I always enjoy pictures with the blue sky background, it really makes the photos pop!
The dedication of the countless individuals required to build these kind of monuments is incredible and fascinating indeed.
Since you mention the sagrad la familia, if it will ever be finished as planned it will surpass the Ulm Minster as the tallest church in the world by 3 m.
Hahaha master pieces take a lifetime to make! 😆 I will have to go back to visit to see the final thing.

I concluded some time ago that mobile phones suck in general :P
But yes, some at least serve as a decent replacement for pocket cameras.
The correct answer to the quizz was 15 kN/m^2(I can only provide the german link). I couldn't find the specification of the lift's surface. But assuming a surface not less than 5 m^2 the lift can handle a weight of 7.5 t at least.
Interesting. I however have no clue whether this is a lot or not :)
PS: even if I can barely speak German, I can read it easily ;)
Hello how are you, your travels are extremely wonderful through your good photos I feel that I travel to that site, the architectures of the past apart from guerdar a lot of history concervan a unique design to look at them is to return to the past, thanks for such great images as always, thanks for showing me a new place, now with the response of the contest god I can not answer this time did not make it difficult for everyone hahaha, I know that everything weighs a lot and has many feet of something, but I do not give with that formula I hope someone can do it

Thanks @perlanacarada. If the light conditions are good current smartphones can deliver great results. Capturing the details or even photographing from inside of the cathedral quickly expose the limits of mobile photography though.

Ja die Ulmer Münster ist wirklich ein wunderschönes Bauwerk. War trotz der der Nähe meines Heimatorts selbst nur einmal dort und konnte leider nur kurz einen Blick auf die Ulmer Münster werfen.

Es ist wirklich ein beeindruckendes Gebäude. Ganz besonders auch der Innenraum, dort allerdings stösst man mit dem Handy schnell an die Grenzen. Ich bin aber am Ende meines Trips dann noch mal mit meiner DSLR hingegangen. Die ensprechenden Bilder folgen dann in einem späteren Post ;)

Das freut mich. Ich weiss ja, dass Du ebenfalls viel mit unüblichen Blickwinkeln arbeitest. Manchmal muss man sich einfach mal auf den Boden setzen oder sogar legen - auch wenn mancher Passant dann etwas seltsam schaut ;)
aber an diese Blicke der anderen gewöhnt man sich recht schnell.....:-)

Ulm muss echt eine interessante Stadt sein und mit diesem imposanten Bauwerk sowieso! Kann mir vorstellen, wie schwierig das ist, gute Aufnahmen davon hinzukriegen, wenn man direkt davor steht und nur mit einem Handy erst recht, aber dafür hast du das echt sehr gut hingekriegt, finde ich! 🔝👍🙂

in Ulm war ich bisher nur einmal, auch nur kurz. Rund 40km von Ulm liegt Süßen, dort war ich für eine alte Bronzegießerei unterwges und habe dann einen Tag in ulm verbracht :)

I don't know how to say by seeing these architeture photography.
wie geil, hätte jetzt nicht gedacht das ein iPhone so gute Bilder macht. Denke aber das es in der Detailansicht und ohne so gute Lichtverhöltnisse dann bei weitem nicht mehr so gut aussieht.
