Whales downvoting on newbs? How is this a thing?

in #proofofbrain3 years ago (edited)

I am not gonna whine about this just trying to understand the why's and the consequences because I was invited here as someone thought I would be a good contributer to Hive and that I could even earn a bit of money from my writings which was never my aim but sounded like a nice bonus. So although I've only been on Hive a few weeks this account is 3 years old. Maybe I should have done an #introducemyself post but I only just saw that thing. Maybe this could count as my intro, be it belated.
Intro- I was gifted this account by a friend on FB who also donated me some $ as I used up everything going around voting and commenting on stuff as I explored. Had no clue. Began posting and not much happening until my mentor/donator gave me more tips, then I was off. Great stuff. Found some old friends here from steemit and just getting into the swing and learning what hive is all about. My name on all other platforms is always Northern Tracey or Tracey Northern. I did not pick this name (btw can u change that?) I get about.
So then the reason I'm writing this is-

Screenshot_2021-05-13 Hive A Complete Beginner's Guide (With Fun Doodles) Pt 1 PeakD.png

Brought to my attention by a wise hiver. What do I make of it? Do I crawl into a corner and sniffle to myself. Maybe I would if I understood what it means. Newb remember? All I know is views stopped, upvotes slowed and I even lost a follower. Knew something was amiss so it's good to know what it is I suppose.
To whoever it is doing this it would be nice to come and tell me why, show your face and even throw some abuse at me if it works for you. I can handle it believe me, I've had plenty over the years for my 'out there' views.
I'm not naturally a writer so won't be posting personal rants like this or a daily diary. My writings were just collections of my own research which I wanted to share with as many people as possible as the truth must out. If downvoting means I have no reach here then there is no point to giving hive my content.
I hear that if hive grows all hivers benefit, it seems there are some who prefer to keep it a small elite club. Good luck with that, I predict the hordes coming over the hill soon.
Any advise from the wise hivers is welcome for my learning curve here but especially those professional downvoters, I'd love to hear from them why this makes them feel good or what benefits they get from it if any?

PS I heard it's not the done thing to vote on your own posts, a bit like 'liking' your own posts on fb which seems silly but does bump ur post up the wall so can see why people would do it. But I felt obligated to cancel out the nasty downvotes so upvoted every one the critter slapped a downvote on. Am I a bad person now? Who cares I'm already hated so in for a penny in for a pound......Any tips on how to give my votes out optimally will be also welcomed.

Sort:

That account is no whale. Seems to be on some mission to spite an account to counter their votes. If they are actually countering their votes, they can't be very big.

No-one's is going to complain about your self vote at this point. It's not as if you're paying yourself 100s from the reward pool.

The account has no posts on it, nothing. It just seems to be set up to cause trouble or who knows what. The poster told me whales use other accounts to do this. I'm not being para, it's only what I've been told.
Thanx for forgiving me my selfie votes :-)

It's more psychological than anything, whoever is behind it, as the downvotes are negligible. It causes trouble only if you let it. 😉

I feel like a whale would have loaded it with a lot more power than that. They usually do and they usually get figured out at some point.

That account does belong to a whale, it's one of Hives dirty little secrets!

Psychological warfare, eh? Which whale?

Hit me up in chat!

It's it working now? I'll give it a go.

Hit ME up in chat!! LOL love a bit of goss

Gossip makes the world go round! 😆

Ignore it as best you can. Especially if it is just a small vote. The person you indicated seems to downvote any post with the #informationwar tag. Yet it is a low amount.

Now if you break around $100 for a post (maybe a little less than that) you'll likely see 20+ downvotes. That is to try to keep the reward pool available to spread out. That is the theory. Ulimately at that level I personally don't care unless the person doing it are hypocrites and turn around and upvote themselves or their sock puppets after claiming to protect the voting pool.

I can tell you if you pay too much attention to it, it can become quite depressing. It's up to you how much attention you want to spend on it.

It is one of the flaws for this DPOS (Delegated Proof of Stake) system that has been apparent for several years now.

EDIT: As far as that sunsetjesus account it is being powered up at pretty regular intervals. I saw it's downvotes when they were $0.01, then $0.02, etc. They are now at $0.04. It could become a nuisance at sometime in the future or if they accelerate that. It does behave like an automated bot and from my observations it seems fixated on the #informationwar tag.

Ok thanx good to know. Maybe someone should let them know they're targetted. It might cause them to lose tags. Shame innit. I'll keep using it tho coz they're righteous and like you say it's only a small vote. It's kinda like swapping flying under the radar on social media to dodging bullets here hahaha

Nah. That bot is so insignificant that you'll get more votes up than it can come close to cancelling. Right now that vote is costing you $0.04 in potential votes.

This is a decentralized network. Letting them know won't actually change anything. There is no authority to do anything about it other than to perhaps do the same type of thing.

That just results in war.

Overall, the easiest thing is to ignore it.

A good number of my posts I put in #informationwar. I get downvoted by them every time. I've gotten downvoted more significant amounts but it has only happened twice when my potential rewards went above $100.

Well that's disgusting, sounds like a kind of 'glass ceiling' for little fish to me.

It is. Yet none of us that have thought of it have come up with a solution. This tech is decentralized. There is no centralized authority for a reason. They can't technically censor you. Yet as you probably have guess if people amass enough power here they can effectively financially suppress people here. They could vote your reward to $0 all the time. This happened some on steemit which is the project hive forked from. I was involved in arguing against this behavior back then. I also tried to find a solution.

Any solution we could think of would require a centralized authority. That would make the entire network vulnerable to take down. It would create an authority that could in fact censor everything. If they were compromised/corrupted for whatever reason it could make the point that this network is decentralized moot. At that point you might as well just give that authority control of all of the servers, equipment, etc. They would have the same power as if you had done that.

We also tried grouping up and mass up voting to counter down votes we thought were bad. That just resulted in a kind of warfare.

So is there a "class" system? To some degree yes.

It got bad enough on steemit I stopped posting there for about two years and discovered HIVE and it wasn't as bad here. That doesn't mean it might not take those paths. We didn't have communities when I was on Steemit. It was all one big community.

Communities in theory were supposed to address this. Yet as you can see we have a bot that seems to be designed just to downvote everything in one community.

It's human nature. Some humans are assholes. It is unfortunately unavoidable.

So what can you do?

Ultimately it is up to you. Yet personally unless you notice a pattern of malice from a powerful enough source to truly impact you it doesn't seem like a battle worth waging to me.

That is totally your decision though.

I can say I dumped a lot of time into trying to solve this problem over the span of around 3 years. I never came up with a solution that didn't in the long run create more exploitable outlets that could lead to far worse problems.

Yes nice explanation and we must not fall of any kalergi plans they might be using. I was also on steemit in fact I visited there today funnily enough. I never noticed the monetization before. Has that always been there? Anyway re the downvotes, I can live with it. Thanx for taking the time to give me some learning.

In the early days, 2016, the money was good...Jeff Berwick got 15k for one post, and I was regularly getting over 100 myself!

Yes the monetization has always been on steemit. It's pretty much the same as here. This has communities, and while I see some of the old bad behavior it hasn't gotten as bad here yet from what I have seen.

Before the Hive fork I was averaging between 20-50 downvotes per article. They didn't make a dent in post rewards, just an annoying swarm of gnats that wouldn't go away. Try not to let'em bother you.

Self votes. It's totally a personal choice. I do not upvote my own content but have no issue with anyone who does. The objective when running your own business should always, always, always be pay yourself.

Welcome to Hive!

Thankyou so much, yeh the selfie upvote was a knee jerk reaction I won't be bothering again. Onwards and upwards as they say......

I see upvoting my own content as one less vote I can give someone else, that's the only reason otherwise I'm all for paying yourself.

Happy whatever day this is.

I'd take my selfie votes back if I knew how now I've calmed down. Never mind. It's a learning curve

Don't worry, it's just us here.

There are people who self righteously claim self voting is wrong, but there are other people such as myself saying if you don't think your own posts are worth voting for who else will?

Like everything on Hive, which is like a giant and complex multi player game, this is tactical.

A lot of accounts claiming you shouldn't self vote are part of circle jerk systems, or they have multiple accounts.

Liking your own posts on Fakebook, lol, I like anything I post in that hellhole three times from all three of my accounts, that is about half the likes I get on there

And this is the game within the game. Has been happening from day one. Psychological warfare 101. Different rules, for different people. It only works for the person with the biggest vote lol.

Do you use a different name on FB? I don't remember seeing anything of yours on there? I'd like your posts!!

Interesting story there, the old anti-semite ruse, isn't that getting a little worn now? As they alwys say if you want to know who is in control look at what you're not allowed to criticize. I thought it was common knowledge that ole Rothy is the head of the church of satan so not a Jew at all. ;-)

this is what i wrote after my first 30 days on steem,

Cool story, thanx, all makes sense now hahaha

No this man is just another deluded soul who doesn't know how to truly use Occums Razor and critical thinking. He hasn't even entertained the notion that there never was any virus. EVERY other pandemic/epidemic has always followed vaccinations and before that variolation/innoculation campaigns and environmental issues (pollution). Please read or lsten to my Contagion podcast for the facts on that. I will be covering this 'escape from a lab' nonsense properly on my next talk which I'm recording on monday.

ok, thanks for clearing that up.
