The long and short of it

in GEMS4 years ago

In the thirty three years my wife Faith and I have been together I've come to know how special a person she is...She puts up with me so must have the patience of an angel but, all jokes aside, she is an incredible person and has so many qualities to value - She's not perfect; No one ever is, however just when I think she's expended her awesomeness, she'll roll out something new and amazing...I really am fortunate to have her in my life.

Don't worry, I'm not going to blab on about how awesome she is, but I thought it would be cool to post about something she did today.

First some background. In the thirty three years we have been together she has never once had someone else cut or style her hair; She has done it herself completely. Ok, so that's not so interesting I guess...But the word completely relates to all aspects of her hair care, including cutting. Yes. she cut's her own hair.

Faith has reasonably long hair currently, you can see an image below taken this afternoon. You can see she's also wearing a cape in preparation for her cut, and if you're really switched on you'll notice she's growing out a colour.

She used to have far longer hair in her 20's but she prefers to keep it shorter these days as it's easier to look after. This is why it came as no surprise when she announced last week that she was going to cut it off.

She asked me what I thought and I told her I don't mind either way as she'll look good no matter what. As if I was going to say anything else! I meant it though, and so she set to work this afternoon.

Faith is cutting what's called a concave bob which means the back section of hair is shorter than the front her's is also weighted slightly to the right as that's how her hair works. The image below shows how she uses clips to section-off her hair so she can make accurate cuts and make sure it's even rather than wonky.

It's actually an interesting thing to watch however I rarely stay around to watch as my comments rarely add any value to the process and I'd rather not risk being blamed for it all fucking up. A lot of concentration is required as she cuts using a mirror and operates the scissors with both hands, meaning her natural right and also the left.

I tiptoed in like a quiet little mouse to grab these images about thirty minutes ago and the next time I see her it'll be complete, styled and blow-dried...Hopefully it looks close to what she intended.

Waiting...Waiting...Waiting...

Faith has done this before, cut her hair dramatically shorter than the existing style, and as I said earlier she has also had far longer hair also; I don't mind either way. For me a person is not what they look like, their true self comes from within. Yes, physical appearance and attraction is important, very important, however physical appearance is never enough to change my opinion of who a person is within, their true self.

Still waiting...Waiting...Waiting...

Done!

There it is y'all...The new style. I think she did a good job, although I'm no expert of course. She's pretty happy with it and is going to stick with the shorter style for a little while, maybe a year. She's lucky in that her hair grows very quickly so if she decides she wants it down at her waist then a year later there it is.

Yeah, I'm a lucky dude really...I have an awesome partner who, despite all the odds, seems to want to stick around with me, and one that has some awesome attributes. I don't really care what her hair looks like because I love her for her, not how she looks; We're happy and life's pretty good...And that's the long and short of it.

Tonight we're watching a movie and then the Formula One Grand Prix race live from Silverstone, England. Of course, dinner has to happen too. Alas, that's one area where Faith doesn't excel; Cooking isn't her thing and she doesn't like doing it. We make do though, like I said, no one is ever perfect. Besides...

It's our faults, frailties and imperfections that make each of us uniquely individual and perfectly us...Right?

I hope y'all have had a great weekend so far and if there's any of it left you make the most of it.

I'll catch you next time.

Thats quite a talent she has and I bet it saves you a lot of money on hairdressers visits! Does she have a mirror behind her too?

She has a hand held mirror.

(You know she's a hairdresser right?)

I didn't, but still. Cutting your own hair is not easy.

Yep, very difficult. She does a good job though. I tried to cut mine once...Didn't come out so good. 🥴

The clippers are always an option. For the lads, a decent haircut's only ever three weeks away.

😆 God job you have Faith to put it right!

You need a hairstyle like Shaun, then you can cut your own! 😉

That's what I want...Faith won't allow it. I do what I'm told.

Damn, and my excuse to not get a haircut for over 2 months is corona! I'd love to learn using my trimmer for my haircuts too, I'm just afraid I'll make a humongous mess of it lol!

She doesn't use a trimmer, she uses professional hairdressing scissors and is very good at what she does so there's little risk of it going badly. After 35 years you'd expect her to be good though.

Haha yes that's true! And that she uses her non dominant hand too is even more impressive.

I wouldn’t dare using scissors though, like ever!

Easier to just put a hat on huh? 🤔😂

Bam! This is so on point lol!

This is why in most pictures of me I have a hat on. 🧢

What a great job she did. Love the cut. I wish I could do that but it will never happen, too afraid it would just be a mess 🤪

She's a clever little thing huh? The long hair was getting annnoying for her so...Yep, won't have to worry about that for a while now. 😁

Jeez she is one talented person, I can't even cut my own mohawk never mind manage something like that XD

I probably could in a pinch but it's much easier to get J or pixie to do it

Tell her it looks great :)

She's a bit nifty huh? I told her you liked it...She said thanks.

Looks cute!! She did a great job!

I reckon so too.

OMG that looks amazing, and even more because she did that herself. Loving it! I totally get the shorter coupe thing, it can be so bloody annoying and hot with the longer hair, but I haven't been to a hair dresser since 6 months at least, so overdue as well. I think I'm going to fix that this week, thanks for the reminder :)

I also totally get why you are trying to stay quiet when she's doing so, my boyfriend always wants me to cut his hair but I'm always so focussed and trying to get the feeling that I get stressed when he's interfering and mentioning this side and that side needs a bit of cutting as well. I can't deal with that lol, so I always send him to the hairdresser although I can do it. It's just too annoying with him interfering while I'm cutting, instead of when I ask him if he sees any longer parts.

Yep, she did a pretty good job on it. This is not the first time she cut her own hair as I say in the post, so she knows what she is doing.

I have friends who also cut their own hair and it always amazes me to see how skilled they are like your wife. I would defo not be able to do so with my own hair and probably end up with some wrong cuts here and there (or everywhere haha)

It's easy...Just do it like this!

haha that's exactly what I tell my partner, every single time that he asks me to cut his hair. For my hair, I pass :)

I am seriously impressed. Seriously.

When I was a kid my dad cut our hair (I didn't find out until much later that it was the same clipper he used on the horse's manes). (The damn horses always looked good.) It was not pretty and generally speaking painful. It ended when I was about 6. I asked if it was a rule that your hair had to be butchered to go to church on Sunday. From then on it was the local barber who told me if I didn't sit perfectly still he might accidentally cut off my ear and that his dog was anxiously waiting for the next ear to hit the floor. A big shorthair named Joe.

I knew a guy that cut his own hair when I was young. In a couple weeks it looked just fine, and he was a cowboy for crying out loud. He played bass fiddle in the local dance band and wore a hat the first week or two after his haircut.

I absolutely agree with your assessment that people are much more than their physical selves, but attractive packaging never ever hurt a product.

My um cut my hair for a while...I didn't like it however I think that's a story most people could tell. These days my wife cuts my hair...And it has saved thousands in hairdressing costs over the years. I wear a hat most of the time when I'm not at my job so I cold probably get away with cutting my own hair...A hat can hide so many disasters.

Could you tell me why you men don't like women to cut our hair? Why don't you let it grow this long? For me as a woman I do not like to cut my hair a lot, but from time to time I do it to vary my appearance, she shows that it turned out very well.

In my post I clearly state that I don't mind what she does with her hair...That's what the whole post is about really. Maybe you didn't read that part though.

I read it, but I was referring to men in general. They don't like us to cut our hair. But if in a short time it is long again.

Ah ok...Well I'm not sure what others think about the scenario but it doesn't bother me. I think it's pretty superficial for a person to not want someone else to cut their hair I suppose, but that's just me.

I can count on the fingers of one of my hands the men who do not care about that detail and you think you are 1.

I guess for me I spend more time finding out who a person is inside so that I'm better able to understand them. Looks can be deceiving and judging people by physical appearance rarely leads to a person knowing the other person very well at all.

For me, all people start from a position of zero and based on what they do, say and how they act they will rise of fall...Most fall I'm sorry to say, but some rise and those people become my friends.

With Faith...Well I fell for her when I was seventeen and a half years old and that repeats itself each day, sometimes many times. It would not speak very highly of me if I was to judge her based on looks and so...No matter what she cuts her hair like has no bearing upon how I feel about her.

I pity a person who judges others so easily, from a physical aspect, and I pity those who allow others to dictate how they cut their hair.

I congratulate you on that and yes, in the same way you will always love your wife. Good answer @galenkp

Well I guess she can chose to cut her hair and style it anyhow she wants because of the nature and type of hair..
For my short , curly and natural hair here am helpless, I dare not do anything to it on my own .

There isn't any style I can do to my hair without adding an attachment to make it great...

I love her hair and the end result ...kudos and job well done to her

It comes down to the type of hair a person has and we all just need to roll with whatever we've been given. I don't really like the way my hair is but I can't change it right? My wife does a good job with hers but I'm sure if you asked her there would be something she didn't like. I guess that's the nature of being human. Rarely completely satisfied.

Awwww so nice to see such a romantic post and your appreciation for Faith. Adorable. I can understand her. I let no one touch my hair either lol. I cut it alone too. I will do this for as long as I'll can.

You two are such a great couple, I remember when I first came across your account and it had a post about the pretty Faith.

Nobody is perfect, I believe that in love it matters to have the perfect imperfect person next to you😍

Yeah, I figured you would...Many hairdressers do as they don't trust anyone else. Knowing what I know about the industry, I don't blame them. So many hairdressers out there simply doing whatever it is they feel like rather than what their clients ask for. I'm surprised one hasn't been sued yet.

Oh yes! I hear this from many of my clients before meeting me. They went to various places where they said "1 inch please" and they left almost pixie/bald😂😂 I wonder if this habit is like an infection. It starts slowly early in the career and then the hairdresser starts to embrace his own cutting hair philosophy as universal lol.

I do agree that the client should be listened, advised. But doing what you want on somebody else's hair is just wrong

I remember a joke about hairstylists. It was something like: be careful how you treat your hairdresser, they can ruin your self esteem for the next 6 months lol. In fact, it should be quite the opposite. I have heard of stories when people's hair just fell off because of the bleach and nobody complained to anyone. Kinda sad and it gives a bad reputation for the entire community of hairdressers.

Faith looks awesome with her new haircut, long hair is quite hard to maintain. I am almost in tears at the thought that I have to wash, detangle and dry my curly hair. I postpone it for as long as I can. I luv it though when I see my curls😅😅😅

I think that same situation happens all over the world, hairdressers not cutting correctly and doing their own thing. I'm not sure why that happens. Anyway, I don't have to work about it...I get what I want I guess. I have a hair cut every 3 weeks...Luckily Faith does it so I don't have to worry about the cost.

You're a lucky guy

She's lucky too...I think so anyway.I could be wrong so for confirmation you'd have to ask her. I know what she'd say though.

If Faith ever asks, tell her that Zack said she did an amazing job with the haircut! Honestly, this looks like something you'd do in a barbershop, by professionals. I tried cutting my hair since Covid got around, and I'm frankly proud that I haven't stabbed myself.

The fact that there aren't a pair of scissors stuck inside of my brain is testament to my shocking surprise. I might have to tempt fate once again though, as my hair's been getting on the long side once again, nearly as long as Faith's new awesome haircut.

Hey, I'm impressed that you've tried to cut your own hair since COVID...But I'd be more impressed if you uploaded a video of you with a pair of scissors sticking out of your head. Now that would be something to see!

Lol, we don't celebrate Halloween here, but that's a great costume to try out. It's a sharp pair of scissors too, and I genuinely did think that a first-aid kit, maybe even an ambulance, was going to be needed. It look like I've survived, without even a scratch!

Fuck dude...If this is how you go about cutting your hair you better stop. I'll cut it for you though...Would be happy to.

This would be the fastest, and most dangerous visit to the barbers ever. I'm probably going to need to take out an insurance policy for accidental scalping/decapitation before I'd let you go anywhere near my precious hair, mate.

Accidental decapitation is a guarantee Zack. I'm good with a chain saw, but wouldn't be able to help myself I think.

Welp, that's not helping my confidence. Well, I guess we do what we must, because we can :-p

You get major bonus points for noticing that your wife got her hair cut! A great skill that I have yet to master after 29 years of marriage. Perhaps a light goes on after 30 years of marriage?

It's always good to stack up some bonus points here and there, one never knows when they may come in handy.

As far as the light going on after 30 years? I've always noticed stuff about people, small details, and so it's not surprising that I do so with Faith also I guess...Having said that, the hair cut wasn't a small change really...If I didn't notice it I might have ended up dead in my sleep.

A great job that Faith did there and she really knows her stuff. Does she also cut you hair and if not why not?
Marian also cuts her own hair and here's the bargain, I haven't been to a barber for the past 20 years, as she cuts mine as well.
During winter I give her a break as I let everything grow including my beard and I look like one of the old apostles, but come Spring then I go under the knife/scissors and I look like a new man.

Nothing wrong with looking like an apostle, or reinventing yourself each spring and becoming new. Sounds like a good annual journey of enlightenment. Lol.

Hahaha, In am not going to ask how did you know?
I don't talk about my journey here on Hive, as many won't understand it.

Yeah physical appearance is really important. You will never know the inner quality if you were not attracted by the physical appearance. It's great you have a wife you are proud of.

I pray I have the one in which I and my God would be pleased with.

Hi there and thanks for your input on this topic. You comment is greatly appreciated and I hope you are well.

I am doing much well. We thank God.

WOW, That is a real task trying to cut your own hair and she has done a amazing job this sort of hair style has become very popular now a days and it looks more elegant and professional looking my wife has the same hair style only she doesn't cut it herself.

Yeah, it's popular as it's fairly easy to take care of. That's why Faith cut her's this way. Ease of use. It'll grow long again, which I really like, but for summer this is how it'll stay.
