Welcome

Welcome to Scholar and Scribe's monthly genre-focused fiction writing competition! If this is your first time here, we're thrilled to have you! Allow me to introduce myself and this wonderful community:

My name is ThinkrDotExe, your friendly neighborhood dork, family man, and professional counselor by day - content creator and amateur writer by... whatever free time I have. I've been writing fiction pieces for Scholar and Scribe almost since their formation. Scholar and Scribe is a community of writers and authors dedicated to creating and curating high-quality creativity in just about whatever form it takes - short stories, poems, serial stories, etc. - with a specific bent towards fictive literature. Rants, discussions, journalism, and other similar works likely won't perform well here because we're all about the fabrication of a well-spun story, and there are some incredible storytellers in our ranks! If you don't believe me, just scroll the community posts for a little while, and you'll see what I mean. Also, the two-token system that rewards both authors and readers for spending time in S&S is a pretty nice benefit too, but hey, don't take my word for it... see for yourself!

Enough about us, you came here for one thing: COMPETITION! It's literary blood sport where your foes are vanquished and you stand upon the pinnacle of victory with the wind in your hair, screaming to the sky as you revel in the glory!... Okay, maybe I got a little carried away, but I'm sure you're dying to know what this is all about, so let's get right to it.

First Thing's First:

This contest is in no way associated with the ongoing Dreemport/Ecency writing collaboration for August

-BUT-

You can absolutely use entries written for THIS monthly competition to submit in that contest. Unfortunately, this is not a reciprocal arrangement, so if you have already submitted a piece for that contest which does not adhere to this contest's stipulations, you'll have to write another piece for this one...

But is that really a problem? The more stories, the better, eh?!

Rules

Every month, the stakeholders in S&S are going to decide on a genre and theme for the contest. If you're a stakeholder and haven't yet made it into our community space on the Hive Pizza Discord, pop on in and ping @dibblers.dabs to get your appropriate role and jump in on the conversation! The rules for the Competition are as follows:

  1. Your entry must adhere to the genre AND the thematic prompt given. Any entries that deviate will be removed from the contestant pool.
  2. Your entry must be at least 800 words in length, and may not exceed 1500 words. This is for the purpose of providing substantial content, but still keeping it relatively brief for the contest's purposes. Note: this does not include any intro text/footer text.
  3. Your entry must be posted in Scholar and Scribe and use the #scholarandscribe and #ss-monthly tags, or it will not be eligible for winnings.
  4. All languages are welcome but MUST include an English translation within the post so we may judge the submission accurately!
  5. Link your entry in a comment beneath this post to secure eligibility for winnings. If not linked, your piece will not be added to the contestant pool.

Winners will be selected and announced in a post showing ranking with a link to their piece, as well as some honorable mentions for runners-up. The rewards for placing are as follows:

  • Gold: 30 SCHOLAR, 3 SCRIBE, and 3 HSBI
  • Silver: 20 SCHOLAR, 2 SCRIBE, and 2 HSBI
  • Bronze: 10 SCHOLAR, 1 SCRIBE, and 1 HSBI
  • Runners-Up: 5 SCHOLAR, .5 SCRIBE

May the odds - and your creative energy - be ever in your favor!

Parameters

The story parameters for this month are:

  • Genre: HORROR
  • Thematic Prompt: TIMEPIECE

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION IS 8/25, 23:59 UTC-5

Give us your best substantial, fictive work between 800-1.5k words following these prompts for a chance to win! We greatly look forward to seeing your stories!

Your panel of judges for this month: @thinkrdotexe, @grocko, and @relf87

As always, take care of yourselves and each other, and stay thoughtful!
Your friendly neighborhood dork,
~Thinkr

Just a friendly poke at @cryptoniusrex, @lex-zaiya, and @zakludick to bring your attention to this contest. I'd like to see ya'll's work this month, if that is agreeable to you!

Thanks for the poke. You'll see something from me this month

WOOHOO!!!! !PIZZA !CTP

hmmmm.... peers griggily at thread...

LOLOLOLOLOL that is hilarious!!!! LOLOL

and yes - I agree - the more stories the better!!!! I don't like horror at all.... LOL it freaks me out - but..... I'm trying to think of a way that I could maybe put a spin on it that its not overtly horrifying.. but still spooky! hahahaha

but i know someone who LOVES horror that might be interested in this! hehehe

@darthsauron... have you seen this?? hehehehe you have 20 more days to enter!!!

Have you spent any more time thinking about how to put a spooky spin on something without it being overtly horrifying? Would LOVE to see your work here!

oh thank you so much for remembering me!!!! hehehehe

I haven't :(

I'm still trying to get my part 3 finished for today and its due in less than 5 hours LOLOL
shhhhhhhhhhhh don't tell the dreemers i'm still racing to beat the clock! hahahahahahahahahaha

oh - i jus saw that you said there are 6 days left... hmmmm

ok... ok! so i'm not out of the running yet! hehehehe

maybe i can still think of something hahahahahaha

Right, you've still got time, I'm just going around to potential contestants and poking them to see if they still want to be involved! I hope to see your submission, would LOVE to see what you bring to the table!

And don't worry, your secret is safe with me.... I won't broadcast to everyone that you put your own contest submission off till the last second... 😜 tbh, I get it. I do my best work when under pressure! !PIZZA !CTP

Hey, thanks for nominating new blood to enter the contest! We're always happy to see new faces. And yes, completely fine to put your unique spin on it! As long as the story is spooky/scary and high quality, it stands a chance! We're more likely to vote a well-crafted spooky story than a poorly crafted hack and slasher!

Great to see you here, looking forward to seeing what you bring to the table! !PIZZA

hehehe happy to! and I think he will have found a place to appreciate his scary stuff! LOLOL i can't read it - its too scary for me ROFLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

i will try to see if I can come up with something scary but honestly - if I start scaring myself - I'll just pass it on to someone else LOLOLOLOLOLOL

There are several significant Hack and Slash, books. It all depends on the story.
What gave you that impression? 😀🤣
Who am I kidding, there's nothing better than a writer's terrifying imagination!
"The Dark Half," "I Know What You Did Last Summer,", "Hideaway" or "Lives of the Mayfair Witches" - by Anne Rice.

hahahahahahaha he was saying "poorly crafted" hack and slasher. LOL

I don't think Anne Rice qualifies for poorly crafted anything! hahahahahahaha

Some say this about Koontz, Lois Duncan and even King.
She was one of the best authors, ever. She created characters from the bottom.
At least she's with the other great writers now...
Pratchett, Goodkind and so many more.
I had the chance to meet her when I was growing up, I will never forget it.
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks S&S, for this month's competition. And picking a genre inspired by so many great writers!

I know this is quite late, but I'm glad to see you here, and hopefully we'll see a submission from you? Would be really cool, if possible! You've still got 6 days!

I stopped writing horror years ago. They were too "SAW" like or too dark 🙂
I can post one, but my English was terrible then and the story is downright disgusting. Although it's almost based on an actual case - urban legend.
If I can find the photos too, of the hospital and the human bones we found.

Hey friend! I completely understand, tbh. If you would rather do something more spooky in nature rather than horrific, we'd totally accept that! Doesn't have to be a disgusting slasher to be horror! Unfortunately, we can't accept a repost of an older story, but I would like to see your story based on the urban legend and the photos, that'd be freakin' awesome! !PIZZA !CTP

Good luck to everyone participating! 🤗

Those who know me know I won't go easy on you. 😁

Agreed! Best of luck to everyone!

And I would expect nothing less. We deliberate with a fine-tooth comb at the judges table! !PIZZA

On am definitely in for this. A good job by the host and the panel.

Woohoo! Looking forward to it, brother! Best of luck! !PIZZA !CTP

Horrific genre?!! OK, let's see how this one goes 😅

oh yeah! I'm looking forward to seeing what people bring to the table! It's gonna be a fun month... !PIZZA

Hello again, a few weeks later.... Just checking in, did you want to get involved by submitting your own work? Figured I would poke around a few commenters to make sure they remembered that the deadline for submissions is coming up in just a little over 5 days now!

Thanks for having me on the panel! Looking forward to reading the entries! :)
!PIZZA

I am not the biggest horror fan, at least not in a classical sense. If you accept more gothic, understated horror over splatter, then I'll try to pen something. Saying that, my first ever story on the Blockchain was an Australian gothic horror and it is still one of my proudest moments as I got a huge whale vote which was a thrill for a new user, kick starting my renewed love of writing.

I did jump onto the Discord but not sure I got any kind of role?

Of course! In my honest opinion, a good horror isn't all hack-n-slash, it has to be suspenseful to be truly horrifying. And enough needs to be left to the reader's imagination to play on their personal fears. So yeah, please submit your best version of understated gothic horror!

So you'll need to choose roles from the #choose-roles channel, and you'll need to ping @dibblers.dabs to get the Scribe role to get access to the S&S stakeholders chat.

Looking forward to getting to know you better, friend! !PIZZA !HBIT !CTP

Hey river, just wanted to check in with ya to see if you still intended to put forth a submission for this month's invitational? Hope to see your work soon, once things calm down for me IRL I'll be more intentional in seeking people out.

How long have I got and what do I have to do again? Thanks for the reminder, I entirely forgot!!

Sure! So you have until 11:59 UTC-5 on 8/5/22 to submit your work of fiction. Stipulations outlined in the post above, but I'll restate here:

  1. Story must be between 800-1500 words.
  2. Post must include #scholarandscribe and #ss-monthly tags
  3. Submit the link to your story in a comment under this announcement post.
  4. Story must adhere to these prompts: Genre: Horror, Primary Thematic Element: Timepiece.
If you have any other questions, just let me know! !PIZZA !CTP

I'm not sure I'll time now... I'm so sorry, maybe next month,!!!💚

No worries! We'll catch ya on the next go-round, and I'll try to send gentle reminders earlier in the month to keep it fresh in everyone's minds. Still learning and ironing out the kinks! !PIZZA !CTP

I always appreciate gentle reminders, honestly xxx Thankyou, sounds like it's been a blast this month!

!PIZZA for you

I thought this is related to Dreemport, but I feel that I should join here. I'll add this on my to-do list just in case hehe.

Good luck to all participants!
!PIZZA

It isn't related to Dreemport at all, but you can use the story you write for this contest and submit it in the Dreemport collaboration as well! If you already have a submission in the Dreemport collab, then yeah, feel free to write a new piece for us! We're looking forward to what people make from this one!

Yeah, noted. Thanks!

It's really great to be in such wonderful community though I am still struggling to.keeomup with the activities here but I feel very much welcome already.
Best of luck to everyone
Will be submitting my entry soon

Always something popping, yeah? Haha, I get the feeling. Glad to see you here, I'm looking forward to seeing what you bring to the table! !PIZZA !CTP

Just wanted to check in with you, since we are 6 days from the deadline! I know you wanted to submit, just figured I would send a gentle, friendly reminder. Hope to see your submission soon!

Smiles.
I am glad you took your time to remind me of this sir.
I will be making my entry now, I have been working in it though and along side having some busy week.
Thanks for checking up me sir.

boy, do I understand having a busy week/month! I'm right there with you, friend! It is my pleasure to check up on you, and I greatly look forward to reading your story! !PIZZA !CTP

Am quite glad to hear this from you sir it means a lot. My entry has been submitted.

thank you for your submission, stay tuned for deliberation results at the end of the month an other entries from your fellow contestants! !PIZZA !CTP

Thank you for your submission! A bit of feedback on it to help you truly compete: pay close attention to the thematic prompts for the contest. In order for this piece to be considered for placing anywhere in the top 5, it has to have a central theme of a timepiece, which is absent from your current story. I would suggest an edit of the story to be more compliant with the contest rules and stipulations, otherwise, it will be disqualified. This will be the only time I make note of it, as a thorough reading and understanding of the rules is an important consideration the judges make when judging pieces for winners.

Thank you! !PIZZA !CTP

Cam you throw more light on what you really meant by central theme of a timepiece? I don't get it...

Sure! In order for the story to be considered for competition purposes, it has to include a thematic element of a timepiece (e.g., a clock, a watch, pocketwatch, etc.). If the story doesn't involve this primary theme in some way, it does not adhere to the stipulations of the contest. It falls well into the horror genre, but doesn't have anything to do with a timepiece. Therefore, it doesn't meet all the criteria for the contest. This is what I'm referring to. I hope that helps!

Please, i have done a little editing, but I don't know if this is the right thing.

So I like how you're getting a little closer to the intended theme by incorporating time into it more clearly, BUT it still has very little to do with a timepiece right now. The time element of the story is almost an afterthought, rather than a primary theme of the story. If you had the haunting happen at a certain time of the day where all the clocks stopped or started going haywire or something like that, it would be closer to the designed purpose of the prompt.

The intent of the thematic prompt is to keep the stories we are getting from our contestants somewhat close together in order to eventually create a collection of submitted pieces in an anthology. We can't do that if the theme of the stories are all over the place. The story has to focus on the involvement of a time-keeping device in some shape or form.

Here's the definition of a timepiece to assist you: "An instrument, such as a clock or watch, that measures, registers, or records time." If this element is not in the story, we cannot consider it for the competition. Thank you.

I have inserted the time somewhere in the story but if that is not the best way, then I can easily remove the ss-monthly tag just to leave it in the scribeandscholar Community alone.

Thank you for your submission! A bit of feedback on it to help you truly compete: pay close attention to the thematic prompts for the contest. In order for this piece to be considered for placing anywhere in the top 5, it has to have a central theme of a timepiece, which is absent from your current story. This will be the only time I make note of it, as a thorough reading and understanding of the rules is an important consideration the judges make when judging pieces for winners.

Thank you!

I have done the changes by editing my write up.

Wonderful, thank you! Good luck!

Hey, Peny! Firstly, thank you for your submission to the contest! It's always exciting to see more contestants enter the competition!

Secondly, however, I must draw your attention to one of the parameters for the competition: the story must have a minimum 800 word count. Currently, yours has 373. If you are submitting for the purpose of competing, you're going to need to flesh this piece out further. I hope this feedback helps!

We (the judges) won't leave feedback of this kind in the future, since the competition requires thorough examination and understanding of the requirements that must be met to compete. Best of luck! !PIZZA !CTP

Thank you for your sugestion. I Will try to write another story in 800 words.

Or simply edit this one to be at LEAST 800 words long. And it's my pleasure. I want to give contestants a fighting chance first time around. After that, it's all on them. :)

Just checking in on you again. I left that feedback and I haven't seen another comment from you or an update in your original submission. Just wanted to gently remind you that there are still a little over 5 days left before the deadline, so there is still time to make necessary edits to your story to meet the 800 word minimum requirement! Hope this finds you well!

I try to write new story, but still very short :)

Thanks for reminding

!LUV

You're welcome! Like I said in my previous comment, you're welcome to just flesh out the story you've already written to make it more full! No need to "throw the baby out with the bathwater." Regardless, I look forward to seeing your submission.

As I said, here's my entry!

https://ecency.com/hive-199275/@anonymous02/a-blessing-from-the-devil

I hope everyone will love my entry.

Ah btw, when is the party again?

Thank you for your submission!

According to the Discord, the party starts at 4:00 UTC-5. IDK what that would be in your time, so I guess you'll have to DYOR for that. Hope that helps! !PIZZA !CTP

Thank you!

I just visited the Discord, I'm 12 hours ahead hahaha. But maybe I could join, that is 5am-8am Friday on my place.

Hmmmm, now I have to think of something to enter.... I have nine days.... Tick tock....

Hey man! We'd LOVE to see an entry from ya! And LOL, I see what you did there... !PIZZA !CTP !HBIT

What I understand is that it is a platform agnostic organization with a focus on quality content to bridge a number of different platforms across web3 and web2. But I'm sure that @dreemsteem could explain it better than I could.

It's a bit on the fly and I hope it fits the genre, here's my entry:
