Winter Outdoor Workout: Rocky Mode activated again

in Sports Talk Sociallast year (edited)

Hi there my Hivean friends and followers!

Winter has officially arrived to Prague with freezing temperatures and loads of snow, which means that for us, outdoor workout enthusiasts, challenging times are coming :D You might still remember this post where I showed you my favorite outdoor gym here in the city a couple of months ago. It was still summer back then, the surrounding vegetation was lush and green and it felt really nice and enjoyable to be there. Now, the very same spot looks like this...

Not so inviting, I know :D But (un)fortunately, I´m one of those freaks who work out outside all year round so I go to this gym even now in winter. However, winter workouts are quite special so I figured it could be a cool topic for a post.

I must admit that winter outdoor workouts have more disadvantages than advantages. Let´s start with the longer list, i.e. the cons...

  • It takes more time and effort to warm up and stay warm.

  • Your range of motion is somewhat restricted because of all the layers of clothes you need to wear.

  • Working out with the machines and free weights is harder because there is ice and snow frozen to them and even in them. The machines can also be stuck in freezing weather.

  • The frozen ground is slippery, which increases the risk of various injuries.

  • The water in your water bottle can get frozen (true story, has happened to me).

  • The days are super short so if you, for some reason, cannot make it to the outdoor gym early enough (by like 3 P.M. here right now for example), you will have to work out in the dark.

  • Passers-by tend to look at you as if you were crazy. Some of them might even take photos and/or videos of you.

  • Because of the things mentioned above, your performance will not be as good as it is in warmer months, which can be very frustrating and discouraging.

So these were just some of the disadvantages that came to my mind while writing this post. There surely are more that I just didn´t think of :D Now on to the advantages, yay! Oh, wait a minute, are there actually any? Let us see, I will try to find some :)

  • Since there really are not many freaks like this, you will most probably have the entire gym just for yourself.

  • Once you manage to stay warm and work out intensely enough, the endorphins running through your body will make feel like you are an unstoppable and undestroyable beast :D (sometimes)

  • By working out in the cold weather, you strengthen not only your muscles and body but also your immune system.

  • Regular outdoor workouts in cold weather are a great way to build and maintain your discipline, morale and determination.

So this was my little reflection on outdoor workouts in winter, I hope it may be useful or inspiring for some. Oh and what is that Rocky reference in the title of the post? Well, whenever I work out in snow and freeze, I call it the Rocky Mode, referring to the famous scenes from the iconic movie Rocky IV where he is training for his fight against Ivan Drago in the old school way in the severe Siberian winter :D ;)

No teda!😍 Spomenula sem si jak sme sa divala na Azoroch na Rokyho:)

"Passers-by tend to look at you as if you were crazy. Some of them might even take photos and/or videos of you." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I see that I'm not the only one who laughed with this 😹😹😹, well, take it from the positive side, you might become a star in Tik Tok 🤭🤭🤭
Rocky was the first thing I thought about when I started reading your post 💪🏻
Although I don't like cold I find the advantages more atractive than the disadvantages 😁👍 so I would try to train outdoors in the cold weather, specially if it will make feel like "an unstoppable and undestroyable beast" 😹 that sounds pretty cool 💪🏻😎🏋️

Hahaha I´m really glad to know that this post made you guys laugh so much, it was not exactly the original intention but it´s ok, I like to make people happy, smile and laugh :D

I actually just got back from another workout, today, there was even more snow than the last time :D Who knows, maybe someone from the nearby houses takes videos of me regularly and I´m already a Tik Tok star (or clown :D) without even knowing it :D Thanks for mentioning this possibility :D

"Passers-by tend to look at you as if you were crazy. Some of them might even take photos and/or videos of you.".... haaaaaa haaaaa haaaa.... 😂😂😂

Definitely... Yours is a slightly different way of doing exercises and at the same time struggling with the weather, friend!!!... But I've had a lot of fun reading your post, pleasantly written and full of eloquence and good humor!...

Thank you very much for sharing this, reading it has made my day!!!... Good luck with your training my dear friend @phortun AKA: "The Praga's Rocky".... haaaaa haaa haaa 😂😂😂

Thanks for this amazing feedback man! I didn´t think it would seem so funny but I´m really glad it made you laugh :D Also, thanks for the curation and the tokens, much appreciated ;) Greetings from the "Prague Rocky" :D

Fair enough! :D

It's admirable that you can train first in the cold and then with frozen weights and have them lock up, it's an adventure for sure.

I can't imagine the kilos of clothes plus the weights, you manage to sweat with all that I imagined, so I admire you, because if it were me I would train for sure at home if I can get out of bed so cold hehehehe greetings.

Thanks for your kind feedback :) I know that for you guys from tropical countries, just the snow and freeze alone would be unusual and challenging enough, let alone some king of exercise. On the other hand, I remember how I almost passed out from the heat many times while trying to work out outdoor in Mexico where we lived in for some time :)

I will stick to working out in the comfort of my home. I am not a fan of being cold at all and I am sure those metal bars are way too cold. I would get stuck to them.

untitled.gif

Yeah, the bars and handles are cold indeed but you cannot even feel it if you take gloves ;) Oh and I never lick them either so no sticking for me :D But yeah, the workout is easier in warmer weather, no doubts... Thanks for checking out this post Wes, I appreciate it.

I lick everything I workout with. Gotta get those tongue gains.

Workout over the snow, I wouldn't like it :) Here it was warm till today, but today it has been rainy and cold. It may snow in a few weeks if goes so.

I remember how surprised I was when I learned from you that you actually sometimes get snow in Istanbul. Hopefully, you will not get much of it this year, I can imagine how uncomfortable it must be for you guys :)

It has snowed for two winters in a row. We will see in this winter.

Greetings, amazing the truth, it must be very difficult to practice outdoor exercise in those conditions, very impressive the amount of snow that is present in that place.

The snowload is not impressive yet, it´s just a few centimeters :) In the mountains, there can be up to 2 meters of snow :) Greetings from cold Czechia to warm Colombia!

2 METERS OF SNOW !!!, that's like living in a freezer, I can imagine the measures that the inhabitants must take to avoid getting sick from the cold, especially the children.

Anyway, a hug for you.

Well, if you expose yourself to the cold weather regularly, you take cold baths etc., your body will be strong and resistant ;)

Here in Colombia it is super hot so much that there are moments where you get desperate from the heat, you get many rashes on your body because of that, and at least doing exercise under that condition exhausts you in minutes, such as playing soccer, you feel as if you had played three World Cups together hahahahahahaha.

I know how hot Colombia is, I was there for some 2 weeks :) Back then, we were living in Mexico and I can tell you that Yucatan is even hotter than Colombia :D But I really loved your country. You might recognize my post footer, it´s from Cocora ;)

Actually I am from Venezuela, but I have been here in Colombia for almost 5 years, well you know because of the economic situation in Venezuela.

The freezing temperatures is telling you that your outdoor gym session is officially over until the warm season... Hehehehe

Oh, it seems like you are not going to give in to this because you are already laying out the advantages and disadvantages of working out during the winter.... Cool..

I hope you get around to doing your weight lifting regardless of the ups and downs. All the best.

Well, for most people, the cold temperatures really mean that their outdoor workout is over. But fortunately, not everyone is that squeamish! :D Thanks for stopping by and leaving this nice comment here.

oh wow that looks like fun...NOT! Make sure to do a good warm up before lifting :)

But actually its almost the same here, surfing in 16 degree cold water ins´t fun as well.

Have fun! What doesn´t kill you will makes you stronger 💪

Yeah, a proper warm up is crucial, especially for us not so you young anymore! :D The gym is actually some 30 minutes walk from our apartment and I always walk up there so if you walk fast enough, you already get some warm up even before actually getting there :)

On the Azores, I was swimming in the ocean when the water was 16 C so I can imagine... Not exactly comfortable :D You don´t use neoprene wetsuits?

Wow so much snow ❄ 😍 Well done

Not so much (yet) actually but thank you ;)

that winter landsacape is looking pretty but DAM!! is hard to workout in that climate, you need to have a strong mind for that hahaha, but if you love to exercice you will!

i just saw severals posts and seems like yesterday everywhere got hit by strong snow!

Yeah, I think most European countries have lately got some snowfalls :) It´s been also freezing so the snow doesn´t melt away so easily. I actually went for a little photoshooting in some of my favorite natural places here in Prague, I think you will like that post, just not sure when I will get to actually posting it...

ohh i'm really interested on looking at them , as i dont know the snow in real life i always get fascinated with the beauty winter landscape, its pretty to look at it from far away ahahah but i can bet is a little annoying to live in.

I actually posted today a post of a really nice sun and warm place, it could make you feel warm a least for a couple of minutes hahaha, i'm missing my traveling adventures :(

I just checked that post out, nice one, Choroní is such a lovely little beach town :)

thansk you really much for passing by 🤲🤗♥️ it really its a hidden gem frozen in time

Exercise is really amazing to the human body keep enjoying your outdoor exercise 😜

It is beneficial indeed, for both your physical and mental health :) Thanks for stopping by!

You are highly welcome 😁

I can only imagine how difficult it is😅. Keep up the good work man, I love the dedication and how you can motivate yourself to work even when the weather isn't friendly at all, this weather is already a very good reason for a lot of people to give excuses for not working out😂.

Cheers mate.

Thanks! Yeah, bad weather is overrated anyway, there is no such thing if you have some strong will :) Cheers!

Yeah in this condition outdoor exercise is very difficult and risky. You can wait for the summer to start your outdoor jym activities. Now you can start your indoor jym. Thanks for sharing your city condition in winter. My wish is i will in snowy areas. Because i love snow falling.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I guess it never snows in your region, that´s why you find it cool and exotic, it´s actually not so cool if you have to deal with all the consequences every winter. But the climate is changing and we definitely don´t get as much snow here in Central Europe now as we did back in the days when I was a kid...

I understand perfectly, it is unbearable to do exercises in this way, you are great if you manage to do it...

Thanks :) It´s actually not so hard. Just takes a bit of determination and discipline.

Wow this is great! The more one perseveres to work during the more difficult time, the more resilience you build. Are there heaps of those types of gymsets around Czech?

Exactly :) Well, there are many workout spots here but usually just various bars for calisthenics. Places like this one with machines and free weights are still quite rare here :)

Nepřidal, ale já už jsem na to zvyklý :) V létě není přes všechny sportovce venku skoro k hnutí, na podzim se to začne vyprazdňovat a přes zimu je venku všechno jenom moje :D
