On 16 January we started traveling by car from the wooden cabin outside of Drumnadrochit… 🚗🚗🚗🚗

Some of you already know what I was doing during the last months… since 19 December 2022 actually, if you missed it;
We did move countries, we did it a slightly different way… being homeless for about a month and staying in many holiday locations along our road trip. We didn’t know where we would end up and only in the last minute we got a rental house secured. We rented it unseen… talk about adventures hahaha 🤣

We started our next adventures on 5 January 2023, our journey towards our final destination after we visited the in-laws and friends in England 🏴 for the holidays.

I have counted the DISTANCE we traveled in total:

I know we drove further as we took the back roads… the single track country lanes. All almost off the beaten paths, but I guess this will do nicely as a grand total 😉😎

Let’s go…. Here is PART 6 of our journey from 16 January 2023 💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻💃🏻

This is how we woke up that early morning… the wooden cabins are surrounded by snow ❄️
It was a few cm and looked soooo beautiful. I had to walk around a bit before we would leave.
View towards the left…
Walking along the path and see the grounds. Do you remember, only 1 other cabin was occupied next to ours.
I walk by this bird feeder. I feel the ground is icy ❄️ underneath the fresh snow. So I will keep that in mind driving off this mountain. 🏔️ The temperatures are freezing 🥶 it’s about -6 degrees Celsius.
The road was twisty and turny, rather steep at places and only a single track. (You remember part 5?)
So as hubby had never driven on snowy or icy roads, going downhill, I crawled behind the steering wheel… 😎
I had driven many times over snow and ice, even in my #Classic #Mini 🚗🌨️❄️ love doing soooo 🤩 my kind of fun actually!

The road wasn’t gritted or a snowplough had been.
At the end of this small road I stopped after I drove down and we switched. As it looked like the main roads are fine and the gritter had been. While doing so a small snowplough / gritter drives by.
The view of the fresh snow is stunning… it is about 10 o’clock in the morning now.
See the road is fine as long as you are cautious 🚗 so we keep going.
Pretty blue sky is showing us the way. Such a stunning sight. The car is still covered with snow.

Of course I will show you some sheep 🐑 along the way… they must have been surprised to by the snow during the night too 🌒🌨️
After a while we reach Inverness, a cute city and the capital of the highlands. It used to be from Scotland 🏴
So our first major road sign… ✈️ airport we go left… 😉
It is also the route into the city Centre 😎
We cross a bridge over the RIVER NESS.
Do you see the suspension bridge we walked over in the distance the other day?
Going past it now, the churches do look pretty in the light today.
We have some food in the city and something to drink. 😊 We don’t take long though.
Our trip continues, we are still in Inverness…
The next road sign shows us: Inverness, Fort William, Ullapool and Wick. And the other side Nairn and Aberdeen.
What direction did we go to?
Can you guess?
Next small sign shows we can go either towards Thurso on the A9 or towards Ullapool on the A835…. 😉
Our next direction takes us over a large bridge at the end of Inverness.
So we say bye bye Inverness, seen from the bridge 😎👋🏻
So far we are still traveling by the car 🚗 as you can notice…
The landscape around us is so pretty, covered with a blanket of snow ⛄️
The next major road sign we see we can choose to go to the A9 towards Thurso and Wick or the A385 to Ullapool and A862 to Dingwall.

Suddenly the snow starts and the flakes ❄️❄️❄️❄️ are really big…
We see the road gets covered rather quickly and the wind is picking up. 😬
Visibility is getting pretty low…
The countryside is fading away slowly… at this time we also hear if the agent of the real estate company will drive to the rental house, as she has a journey too and it could be delayed due to truly bad weather. (The predictions aren’t good let me tell you)
She said; “I’ll give it a go.” So we drive further.
We didn’t know if we could move in the house when we left Drumnadrochit this morning.
It is now 13:00h and we are literally driving on snow and ice again. Hubby wants to try to continue to drive, as the traffic isn’t much on this road… so it is the perfect time to practice. I guide him through what to do and don’t do 😎
Our speed is pretty low as the road is icy and with heavy snow the visibility isn’t great out of the window. We stop a few times in a passing lane or parking to let the locals pass by, THEY ARE USED TO DRIVING ON THESE CONDITIONS 🤓 So we don’t want to be in the way hahaha 🤣
Funnily we see the right lane has been gritted but not the lane we are driving on… 🫣
We are driving at the level from Dingwall now.
I look out of the side window.
And see the most beautiful scenery popping up. 🤩
In the distance a blue stroke of sky is showing through…
It makes the scenery like a FAIRYTALE 🥰☃️☃️☃️
The snow stops.
Are you still with me, discovering our route… seeing what I saw, isn’t it stunning? The scenery 😎 let’s enjoy together a bit more.
The blue sky and the snowy darker mountains are popping out against it.
Yep, I think this is lovely… ESPECIALLY AFTER HAVING LIVED IN SPAIN FOR 7 YEARS. HUBBY DID ALMOST 16 YEARS 🇪🇸 🤓
We see some businesses we pass by.
The roads are pretty empty though…

Going over hills and suddenly…
This shows up 🏔️🏔️🏔️ a lake and snowy mountains 🥰
Raw nature… not many villages around here. Just long stretches of quiet roads. 😎

And the most beautiful white mountains 🏔️

A lonely car coming towards us. We haven’t seen many cars on the last roads.
Going through a small town Garve and we see a train station 🚉 and a train crossing 🛤️

A lovely house along the road. Haven’t seen many that close to the road, most have large grounds and gardens.
Now look at this THE NC500 route. Goes left.
Tiny steep roads. (The most epic route possible🤩 look into it if you don’t know)
The snow doesn’t let us take it today. 😏So we continue on this main road…
You still there? You are doing great, let’s keep going… it will be worth it as it becomes rather #remarkable in the end 😎
Did you see the road turn to snow and ice again?
No gritter to be seen. So we continue again slowly as it is ice underneath the snow.
The trees covered with snow…truly winter wonderland ☃️
Do you see the ice on the road? ❄️🫣😬🥶
Next to us runs a river… the contrast is large with the white.
A sign next to the road does warn us for the possibility of Ice ❄️
The large mountains disappeared and we can’t see that far anymore.
Crossing the black bridge
Just everywhere I look, I see such an amazing scenery…
Nope we are not there yet, still a while to go.
We just quickly pulled into a parking and let the large truck pass by. Even though all of us were not going fast. He would have preferred to pass us and we didn’t like to have the large truck behind us. Especially in these icy conditions.
Hubby is still learning to drive on it. Otherwise this post would have been short hahaha 🤣 with not so many photos. 😎
We see in the distance a large dam. The restaurant before it is closed during the winter months. We haven’t seen anything open on this large road. It doesn’t exist on the A835… let alone villages… we are truly in the middle of nowhere… CROSSING THE HIGHLANDS 😎🚗❄️☃️in truly bad weather conditions.

We are catching up with the truck again. But we leave it far in front of us. Steep hills and lots of corners are coming up I see on the map 🗺️
The sky is getting darker and we end up a few times in a blizzard 🌨️ the visibility is zero… 🫣
At a view point I had located we wanted to have stopped at in better weather conditions we rest…
A gritter / snowplough comes by.
Thank you kindly sir 😊👋🏻 too bad he is going in the wrong direction. Hehehe 🤭
None is going the other way…
We continue. The road goes on… we have to hurry up as we don’t want to get stuck on this road…
the right side has now been gritted, the left side we are driving on… nope, it has been a while. 😎 We continue slowly further.
Parts of the Lake next to us is frozen over.
Do you see what I see?
Perfect round circles where the snow melts on the water… ⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️⚪️
In the distance we see trees and a very small dam and bridge.

There you go, it so stands out in the scenery.
More ice… it does look stunning, just driving on it can be tricky. 😎 Hubby is doing fine and I am so proud of him 🥰

Did I tell you we are very remote at the moment here?
No other traffic. Just us… and the snow ⛄️
And… again some sheep 🐑 how can I forget about the #sheep along the roads up here in the #highlands.
Keep going… almost there… 😉 now I am proud of you too, if you have read all the way until here 😉🥰
We stopped for a while to eat some sandwiches 🥪 after this drive so far… it’s 14:20h by now. We have trees and a river on our left side. 😎
Passing by natural scenery everywhere we look.
Look at the SKY! 😳 O no… we are heading that way.
No villages in sight yet…
Some tiny hamlets we do pass, with a few houses.
The views of Loch Broom are stunning even now in the winter.
The first larger town we enter.
We are hurrying now as we want to arrive at our destination before the bad weather does, that is in front of us and the dark… it does get dark early here (at that time at 15:25h ish)
And look what happened. We made it. 🎉 Just before the dark… I drove up the mountain again, so no photos of the last parts. No gritter / snowplough had been up that road. I just slowly drove up. A few times the wheels spinned… but all good 😎🤩 I can deal with that. The 4x4 did help 😉
The agent of the real estate company didn’t want to drive up the mountain in these weather conditions, so we met her at the bottom of the mountain. She said… the garage is open, drive in, the keys are inside 😳 and that was it. We never saw anybody to show us around. We rented this house unseen… and boy are we lucky 🍀

It was about 130km long.
The last track up to the house couldn’t be found, so we drove to where we met the real estate agent. Followed her instructions.
We are living now on the #NC500 route. On the west coast of Scotland 🏴 UK 🇬🇧
THE HIGHLANDS to be precise. 😉🥰
And so far we are loving it. 💜
The scenery is stunning. We are very remote as you know and we will explore many places in the days to come. The nature is raw…

This truely is a winter wonderland 😍😍. And yes for taking on the icy road! I myself have also never driven on an icy road, seeing as it doesn't really snow in the heart of South Africa. I've only seen snow about 4 times in my life and it was no way close to this 😅. I'm not a fan of the cold, but I would love to experience this side of nature one day. I'm glad you had a safe and wonderful trip!

We did almost half a day what should have been 2 hours. But better safe than sorry. 😉
I can imagine… you are not used to the snow and cold.
This is my 6th country of residence now. Spain was the warmest and up in Scotland / UK will be the coldest.
We are still acclimatising… but one can dress for the cold, not so for the heat.
Maybe one day you come up here 😎

Absolutely @littlebee4 ! Definitely Magical! I went to the license place to renew my driver's license today... No, it didn't work and is going to cost an extra $93 to make it work... At first I was a little upset as their website "did not make things clear, at all" - the nice young lady told me to write a letter to the state capitol on my grievances..😳
So I found an agency that "for a fee" can get me the required 📜 before my 03/03 deadline...
And then You know something? I thought about this and I am not upset at all! I will get it done in time, and I had the mind to find someone in NJ to get me the papers and UPS them overnight to me. And had the money to do it, there have been times I might not have been able to...
So I am actually Happy, and maybe that's what it was all about, recognizing all the Truly Positive that has been going on around me, and I have! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
I can totally believe that You are busy with houseguests and exploring Your new surroundings! I am sure I would be as well! Between living in another country, and the trip itself You have lots to familiarize Yourself with!

Hope you are well. Sorry I haven’t been around much. It was so busy with the visitors. And now other things are taking up all my time.
Hahaha yep… snow and ice and a car you fully know. Perfect combo ☃️☃️
No it’s not easy to drive with gloves and long jacket etc. but was needed hahaha.
Luckily car changed and we have some hearing now. Even heated seats, I am soooo not complaining. 🤓
Sorry it didn’t work the easy way to get the license. I hope you have been able to sort it out.
That’s wonderful to hear, that you fully changed your mindset.
You are able to do all of that now. So it will work and be done before the deadline.
Maybe that’s all it is about. Recognising the positive and not stay in the negative.

It was epic all the way… we sure had a journey all the way from Spain… over a month… to the Highlands.
Loved it, every second of it. How could I not 😎
I did classic mini; Netherlands to south Spain in January, snow and ice… for 3 days in 2015. Total days 5.
Now we had a 4x4. A mini would have struggled. The weather warnings were extreme for this day. Luckily all went well.
Now the snow is gone… and the colours of nature, the earth is showing through… will show you soon.
Can’t wait to share the surroundings with you. Raw nature, everywhere I look.

I hate the cold and suffer from it badly. Skinny and lazy to eat at times. Among other things. But I'd wrap up and make fires every day for the landscape and solitude (and peace) that your photos depict. Big time!

I’m not good in cold, but one can dress for it. Lots of layers so help. And fires too. We also have underfloor heating at this moment. Not sure what the next place will have…
And not always eating, hahaha yep know that too. Especially when I’m so sucked up in my art… all day, waking up in the evening and see oh I didn’t eat or drink today.
It is so peaceful here… wild animals run through the garden. You hear nothing and it is soooo dark. You don’t see anything out. Only when the moon is visible. 😎 it’s perfect.

Yep, why the easy way… we love exploring and traveling. When we started we didn’t know where we would end up, end of December. But here we are… after 6 parts of the journey. We will have a great time 😊👋🏻 so much to see and do, walks… raw nature all around us. Yep, love it.

Well you are in a fantastic part of the country - the scenery around there is amazing, I'm sure you love it. The weather when we drove towards it was pretty bad with blizzards and all the icy roads. The day after we even had more snow and some areas almost had 30 cm cover. I build a snowman ⛄️ too. Will share soon ☃️ as it was so much fun 🤩

The snow was stunning and got even more the next day, so much no car could drive down or up our mountain.
Now it is melted already… just the top of the mountains are snowy. I will share our trips out soon… and the day I built a snowman ⛄️ it was so much fun and made me giggle like a small child. Hahaha 🤣
The cold isn’t that bad here, yes if I compare it with Spain, but it is rather temperate. It’s between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius this week and last week too. No freezing at the moment.
The houses are well insulated here. Unlike Spain where they are not.
Can’t wait for the changing seasons and all the green nature to flower around us.
My heart 💜 sure warmed up with so much joy 🤩

I think the sheep in Africa would have a hard time surviving in these climates. Their fur / coats will be different. Their eyes… all of it.

I know you were suspecting Ireland. 🤓 It would have been easy with my passport. Not now. Still waiting if they accept my paperwork 🍀🍀🍀🍀 the nature is different up here and many more trees. More raw nature.
You weren’t fully off… just Scotland, let’s say the UK is out of the EU now.
Indeed, one does need a proper car up here and we got one while visiting family in England during Christmas. We did prepare for it… 🤓 that road we drove, you don’t want to be stuck there. No mobile reception or houses… it’s so remote. Up in the highlands a 4x4 is the car to get.
That’s the road we drive once in a while to get a large grocery shop in Inverness or other shops.
Without the snow it’s 1,15 h. And we love every moment. The scenery is stunning 🤩

I have traveled to do jobs for clients in SA, where they live remotely some in the mountains and very far from everyone like an hour's drive from the shops so I have an idea of your remote place now.
I was even stalked at some point about 1km close to the client and my colleague had to go call the client to pull us out of the sand while I waited with the van 😃.
This is awesome, I am happy to you are loving your new location. Have your in-laws arrived?

Yep they did last week Wednesday and will leave this coming Thursday. So I have been taking them out and about.

Just didn’t want to break it down more.
Then I am happy I ended up here and can show you the beauty of the highlands and Scotland in particular through my posts.
The nature is amazing. This side isn’t much populated.
The property to buy will probably be more east of Scotland. Around the cairngorms. National park. The one where the cottage In the woods was, and the squirrels came to visit. (Have a look at the cairngorms on Google)
We were trying to get a rental there, but there was nothing, rentals are scarce up here. But who knows, maybe we stay on the west side. We have time enough to explore in the weekends the coming year or so. To truly get a feel for all areas.
Funnily everybody says it is cold, and believe me it isn’t that bad. We have at the moment 4 to 10 degrees Celsius. Scotland has milder temperatures than England. Less extremes. More a temperate climate. Proper 4 seasons, even in one day hahaha 🤣

Hahaha...I don't think understand, @littlebee4! Here in Durban when the temperature goes below 25 degrees Celcius it's getting cool. Below 20 degrees Celcius we start wearing jackets...lol! Believe me...for us, 4 to 10 Degrees Celcius is cold😄! For us, I think that will take a lot of climatizing and getting used to...
It makes sense what you say when you compare it to England though.

Hahaha I so know, in Spain we did the same… 20 degrees Celsius and we were wearing winter coats.
Fully dressed up with scarf and coats and tourists walk by on the boulevard along the see just wearing a top / t-shirt and shirts… bbrrrrr hahaha I know.
This is colder than Spain and definitely colder than where you are.
One can dress for it, but less so for the heat.

Utterly gorgeous! I love Scotland. I spent 6 months working in Perthshire through the winter a few years back. Although on the opposite coast, the scenery is beautiful north of Perth too. I've been up to Scotland a number of times during my years in the UK and up and around Inverness and the Highlands a couple of times. Most recently travelled around with @dreemsteem and @penderis for a few days, doing the circular around Loch Ness and hanging out around Edinburgh and up the East coast towards St Andrews too. I don't think there is a part of Scotland that I have seen that I did not like. And yes @dreemsteem , next time we'll have to go see @littlebee4 for sure hehe. We have done a road trip from 5 January until the 16th we could move into our rental house.
From England to the Lake District to Loch Lomand to Drumoak (Aberdeenshire) to Grantown on Spey to Drumnadrochit (Loch Ness) To where I am now, west coast in the highlands. The accommodations were stunning too. From wooden cabins in the woods to cottages and 1 hotel.
The journey was epic… moving from Spain uk to here 😎🤩
I saw her post about the trip you had.
That would be super cool when you do come to the highlands and come and see me too. 😉💃🏻

I'm serious! hehehe I felt myself feeling a bit nostalgic for the time when we first drove to see our new home 16 years ago on top of a mountain. and now - 6 years ago - we moved to another mountain (where we currently are) and the snow is jsut like this! hehehe

The journey was awesome and the snow… stunning. It’s all gone again at the moment. And it is not as cold as people think. England is colder at the moment.
Here it’s between 4 and 10 degrees Celsius. So not too bad. And the houses are insulated, nothing like Spain where it is colder inside now than outside. No heating stays in the room there.
Here it is nice and cosy.
The snow was truly a surprise the last days. So happy we made it and could get to the rental.
I will for as long until we found a little house to buy and renovate… 👋🏻😊😎

Yep, the walks will be epic. I went on a few short ones already. Will show the surroundings and walks soon. The snow is melted now, and the scenery changed. The colours right now, stunning.

Everything is white. I wanted to experience snow. However, driving may not be easy with such condition. Keep safe.

The journey was epic… all parts of it. And the things we saw and explored. 🤩 loving every moment of it.
Yep most of the highlands are pretty remote and you won’t find many towns around here. The nature is raw. So much space to walk and just be… it’s peaceful and one can be close to nature. Just what we wanted. City is 1,20h drive away 😉
This is indeed where I set up Starlink. Now you know why I needed it.
The snow was soooo pretty. It stayed for 1 week… it is all melted now and revealed the most amazing colours underneath.
I will for sure post more now I revealed the location. Can’t wait to share it all with you.
