Just two weeks after defending the title of World Chess Champion, Magnus Carlsen had to defend the World title in Rapid Chess. Spoiler: He didn’t make it!
But that is not the biggest surprise of the three-day World Championship in accelerated chess, which was held in Warsaw in 2021. The real surprise is the new champion – 17-year-old Uzbek Nodirbek Abdusatorov, who played a brilliant tournament, beating the champion, Magnus Carlsen!

Not the rule on time control (15+10 for the whole game) though, but the rule that in case of an equal number of points, the order is determined by Buchholz ranking or scoring system, and that only the leading two play tiebreak matches. You see, four players finished the tournament with 9½ points, and it would be fair for everyone to play a tiebreak.

On the other hand, despite my wish NOT to rain on Carlsen’s parade, we actually got THE TRUE CHESS KING in this tournament. Why? Because FIDE WCC in classic time control was always a Championship of teams, of computer preparations, of psychology… and then maybe in the fourth place Chess. This format means that you don’t have a single opponent with certain psychology to prepare for, so you have to depend on your acquired chess knowledge. Time control is perfect – not to long to allow access to the deepest ‘memory banks’ and not to short to make stupid blitz&bullet blunders. This is real chess, ergo we have the Real King. Besides, Magnus Carlsen missed his chance to beat young Abdusattorov in their direct game, so we may say that his title is more than deserved:
С друге стране, упркос мојој жељи да НЕ жуборим по Карлсеновој паради, ми смо сад добили ПРАВОГ ШАХОВСКОГ КРАЉА на овом турниру. Зашто? Јер је ФИДЕ меч за титулу с класичном контролом времена увек био такмичење тимова, компјутерских припрема, психологије… и тек можда на четвртом месту шаха. Овај формат значи да немате познатог противника за чију психологију можете да се припремите, тако да зависите од стеченог шаховског знања. Контрола времена је савршена – не предуга да би се одуговлачило приступом најдубљим „банкама меморије“ и не прекратка да би се правиле глупе цугер грешке. Ово је прави шах, и зато имамо правог краља. This is lot of work. @lighteye , I actually predicted carlsen to lose to the young boy. i didn't have any reason anyway. I felt happy the boy won. He played well and deserved the title.

Congratulations to Abdusattorov for this feat. It's not easy achievement but l wouldn't want to call the tiebreak rules stupid because it was for all the players.
Yes, rules are there for some reason. And they should be for everyone the same. Buchholz makes it clear that you win against a weaker player but get less credit for it as if you win against a stronger opponent, easy and clear.
Yes, In Nigeria, we share the money if two players tie (1st and 2nd prize). But, the Buchholz determines who goes with the trophy and title, if there is any. !PIZZA
