Twitter to X. What Have I Learned from This?

in LeoFinance10 months ago

Now that the subject has been talked to exhaustion (and probably not over yet), I thought I should come in with my own perspective on the situation...

First of all, let's establish where we start from. I am not a follower or a fan of Elon Musk. I am not his hater either. I dislike him at a personal level, as far as I know about him without being too interested, but I have to recognize his ability to be a trend setter, his desire to be involved in poorly explored domains, his work ethic and his capacity to endure opposition and inspire others with his vision in order to move quicker toward it despite all obstacles.

Quite a bunch of qualities for someone unlikable who wants to be liked.

From his businesses, I probably like SpaceX the most because I'm a dreamer and a space geek and I dislike Neuralink the most because it will turn us all into cyborgs (otherwise we lose the competitive edge compared to peers).

Regarding Tesla, I have no attachment. I neither like it nor dislike it. It will be massive though.

X and the Everything App

It's the first time I've "seen" Elon Musk in action. I can almost give you in writing that he will build this Everything App. And that comes from a non-fan.

And it will take less time than most people anticipate.

As I said, I don't follow him. But from what I read from others who do, he seems to announce the following actions on Twitter. Sometimes he gets carried away from what I hear, but I don't think it's the case with this Everything App path X has taken.

Source

First of all, Twitter has changed a lot since he took over in October last year. From all points of view:

  • structure of employees
  • top management
  • loosened censorship
  • paid blue check
  • limitation on how many tweets you can read as a free user
  • sharing advertising revenue with select users, under strict conditions
  • rebranding

At least that's what I remember from what was going on lately. The company behind Twitter also started applying and receiving the money transmitter license in different states. That's the precondition to be able to bring social media and finance together and part of the "everything app".

So, what are my conclusions after we have seen so far?

  • Elon Musk is moving fast, and most people have trouble keeping up
  • He likes to be front and center of his businesses, especially in the ones where he wants to push progress into hyperspeed
  • He likes to share things that can be used (hmm, should I follow him? nah! that means I have to spend time on X); he also likes to joke around, a point against following him if one wants serious information
  • His companies (X included) are the opposite of decentralization
  • Having the Tesla example right in front of them, traditional social media and probably next, TradFi (or at least Paypal) are right to not take any chances with Elon Musk; therefore the Instagram Threads, which is a Twitter clone; I believe they'll have a hard time keeping up, even though they started earlier than ICE makers started to build EVs
  • X and Hive: we have some features that will never exist or won't be guaranteed on X - account ownership, decentralization, censorship resistance; probably everything else, they can build. If they'll add cryptocurrency to X, that will be a major boost to the space. But will they? Musk seems to have fluctuating impressions about the crypto space.

Hello @gadrian I like your great post on Twitter to X. I like your discussion. I have moments where I can't stand Elon Musk and yet I would be more likely to pick him over Mark Zuckerberg if I had to pick either one to stand next to in a small room. I like some of the things he does, and I can't stand some of the things he does. I love the Tesla car. If I could afford it I would want an electric Tesla! Maybe he could use his implantable computer devices made for Neuralink to help paralyzed and blind people be able to walk and see again. That's weird control any computer from anywhere implanted into your body? Why in the heck would you want to do that LOL 🤣 I guess his Space X is a good idea but we need to take care of our planet. There is no planet B. Have a great rest of the week. Barb 🤩 !BBH !CTP #ctp

Elon Musk and yet I would be more likely to pick him over Mark Zuckerberg

I think I would too. He is just awkward and bossy, from what I've seen. But he is alive. Zuckerberg is more of a robot.

I love the Tesla car. If I could afford it I would want an electric Tesla!

Probably many would. Charging stations are still an issue in many parts of the world.

Maybe he could use his implantable computer devices made for Neuralink to help paralyzed and blind people be able to walk and see again.

They will do that too. And for that, I'd have absolutely nothing against and I applaud the initiative. Unfortunately, they are the guinea pigs they'll use for the next evolution: mass implants for regular people without any handicaps. It's right there in the second part of their mission statement: "Create a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs today and unlock human potential tomorrow.".

Right @gadrian. The charging stations will start to come up more. I'm glad you would pick Elon too. He seems good and bad (awkward). He might not understand the bad/awkward stuff he does. Like laying off all those people ??? I think he's pretty young. Yes, he is 52. It's OK for people to be guinea pigs and I would too if I were in a position to try and walk again. The guinea pig folks do it with the knowledge of possibly getting better and the risk and they would help other people as well. That is wonderful! "Create a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs today and unlock human potential tomorrow." 🌟😊🌟 !BBH !CTP

I would like to say here that when you have a project going the way it is and people have a lot of interest in it, it's better if people don't do things like this if people lose interest. People will stop using this platform. As soon as any such news comes, the doge coin start's to going up.

Ah, the thing with Doge was a stupid move, in my opinion. As smart as he is, Musk does quite a few stupid things sometimes (maybe because he is bored).

Yeah may be you are right.

I think Twitter was losing the momentum so it was a radical thing to get attention back from other defi protocols being setup.

He has done well with Tesla imo, but that has been with huge establishment and banker support, nearly anyone could not fail really imo.

His space force stuff is also good, I am looking forward to more and better CGI and pushing us more towards creating Starfleet and discovering Spock and the logical Vulcans.

I think Twitter was losing the momentum so it was a radical thing to get attention back from other defi protocols being setup.

Yeah, but none of the other western social media platforms thought of that or had the balls to do it.

He has done well with Tesla imo, but that has been with huge establishment and banker support, nearly anyone could not fail really IMO.

I don't know, I think this administration clearly supported ICE makers and ignored Tesla and Musk.

His space force stuff is also good, I am looking forward to more and better CGI and pushing us more towards creating Starfleet and discovering Spock and the logical Vulcans.

Do you think their launches are CGI?

Yeah, thats true, it was a big and bold move in a way too. But Twitter doesn't have the revenue of the others so it needs to make some bold moves to survive. Also, the barrier to entry for short form content is very low... there are already dozens of them on Hive and Nostr already for example.

Do you think their launches are CGI?
The SpaceX/Nasa program is pseudoscience:

The SpaceX/Nasa program is pseudoscience.

I don't know what to say. I need to research it further, but firsthand, I would say they did deliver lots of satellites into space or into lower orbit (Starlink satellites, at least). I doubt they used rockets of a different company/country to put those satellites in position.

Every space launch I have watched switches to CGI after around 2:30 mins, but maybe you have seen real ones as I don't watch them anymore. But by pseudoscience, I mean that how things like air pressure or combustion work do not fit in with the narrative.

Out of interest, do you think this is a video of Sputnik 1 or is it a model for TV?

That's a model for TV from what I see.

Even reading Twitter I can nearly feel the heat he is getting from changing what is arguably the most recognised brands on the planet. He has some set of balls on him that's for sure. He is meant to be an absolute tyrannt to work for .

He is meant to be an absolute tyrannt to work for .

He certainly can be a tyrant to work for, from what I've read.

Even reading Twitter I can nearly feel the heat he is getting from changing what is arguably the most recognised brands on the planet. He has some set of balls on him that's for sure.

Yep, he takes heat very well. While I don't like the new logo, I think maybe a rebranding was necessary to create a distinction between what it was (social media) and what it will be (everything app).

There is something I always tell people which is that we cannot even good everywhere and we cannot be everywhere at the same time. I guess Elon only wanted to own a lot of things even though he does not have the knowledge. He might have done well with Tesla but Tesla is not a social network like Twitter.

I don't think he has the ability to run a social network but let's see how it goes maybe he will do well after the rebranding but I still do not think so.

Do you know that a lot of people are now moving to Instagram threads?

He might have done well with Tesla but Tesla is not a social network like Twitter.

That is true. Maybe the social aspect will be the one that will stop him from achieving his vision for X. Not the most socially pleasant individual, Elon Musk.

Do you know that a lot of people are now moving to Instagram threads?

Yeah... And they will move back if Elon Musk succeeds in what he has planned for X. Of course, if he doesn't, we have some of the elements he needs to create on X already in-built on Hive, and we wouldn't mind new users...

Elon's focus is to earn money and control power. I think he has done quite a few things with making Twitter more free speech (not all the way) but I think renaming it as X was a bad idea. The rate limiting issues weren't great either so I have a feeling that Elon is just throwing out a bunch of ideas to see what works.

Elon's focus is to earn money and control power.

I don't know about money (he probably wants that too), but I see him as someone who wants more control.

I have a feeling that Elon is just throwing out a bunch of ideas to see what works.

I don't think so... He is just socially awkward, and that makes his plans for Twitter harder to implement.

And yeah, I believe everything was part of a plan. Maybe not the rate-limiting thing. That was a response to ChatGPT and the like using the content on Twitter to grow their knowledge base, just like what Reddit did (except they want to be paid).

From all the Decentralized twitter alternatives, which one do you think has the most traction?

I don't know if there is a decentralized enough Twitter alternative that will garner traction.

BlueSky and Nostr have Jack Dorsey behind (funded Nostr) and are advertised as decentralized, but I believe he has control.

LeoThreads puts content on Hive, which is decentralized enough, but the front-end and middle-end are controlled by the Leofinance team. But if another interface is capable of reading and interacting with LeoThreads (this is where Ecency may have made some progress), then centralization is avoided on this end too.

Decentralized Twitter alternatives are likely to be slow and not garner enough traction. That's why even those considered decentralized have elements of centralization that make them faster. The question is how much that affects account ownership and censorship resistance. I wouldn't trust anything that Jack Dorsey proposes as decentralized, knowing how much censor was on Twitter during his reign.

Thanks for your though response much appreciated. As I am on a mission how about you follow me if Hive growth resonates with you.

It's unfortunate that you've taken this route on Hive, in my opinion. I checked out your latest content. You probably won't succeed this way... Good luck though!

Not very encouraging to hear your opinion. And you may actually be right that I will not succeed. In my opinion it will have more to do with the behaviour of wishing luck, but then being stingy with a follow, which would result in you even being able to follow if I do or not. Could be regarded as someone doesn't even care whether HIVE will have new records.

It's not about the records, it's about the way you approach the problem. I believe others already tried to give you some advice that aggressive Web2 techniques may not work on Hive. Maybe it will work for some, but it isn't convincing enough for me to follow.

I love SpaceX. I will not trust Neurolink (thankful to have a more-than-adequate IQ already and have no desire to tinker with my brain) and I hate all electric cars simply because my tyrannically-installed government wants to force them on me. !BEER

I see many people of the opinion EVs are pushed too hard and without any real benefit, maybe even harming more than regular ICE cars (which may be true).

I'm speculating here, but maybe it's a matter of macro economy and messing with the existing status quo (diminishing the influence of rich oil countries). At the same time, batteries for EVs need access to nickel mines, and that's a pretty rare metal. Whoever controls the majority of these mines, unless a different kind of battery not based on nickel is developed, has a major role in how the EV industry will be shaped. Tesla seems to be in the front position in this case too.

The world is changing. And sometimes we only see (or are shown) the surface, presented with a narrative that sticks for the target audience, while there are deep ramifications that may lead to shifts in world influence.

Interesting share!

Thanks... I guess, lol!

Thanks for sharing.

X reminds me of a publicly listed company traded on the Philippines Stock Exchange. It was a favorite stock then for speculation - Xurpas.

Yeah, I believe Elon Musk will continue with this X rebranding despite many feeling it's a bad move. I believe the "X" is not a good choice, but as a move it's a good one because that's what he wants, to show Twitter is behind and something new and completely different is being built.

X means what? A mathematical formula or like X-Men? 😅

I have no idea. Geniuses and their dumb ideas, like naming their children so strangely.
