The Brit List: May 2026

in Hive Statistics22 days ago

Introduction

I started compiling these lists in December 2020 to continue something @pennsif used to do as I think it helps bring the community together. Since then I have found lots more people to include. @HiveSQL has been really useful for this and I use Python for my scripts. Some of the post is manual as I like to include some commentary and I will keep tweaking it. I am open to suggestions for improvements. I aim to do a fresh list on the first Saturday of each month.

Logo by @barge

I also rely on the community to let me know of more people to include who may not have obvious account metadata. You can find me in the @teamuksupport Discord to discuss it or drop me a comment.

The #teamuk tag has been used to show you are in the UK and was earning extra votes from a bot, but that has not been active lately. Using the tag may still help me to find you, but please contact me if you think you should be on the list.

The list will include anyone living in the UK as well as Brits who have moved abroad. Inclusion on this list does not mean I recommend people, but I will remove accounts if they are known to be abusing Hive or are falsely reporting their location. I can also remove anyone who asks me to. If you have lost control of your account through phishing or other means then let me know so that I can update your entry. There is the option to be counted without being tagged on these posts if you want that.

The code to produce this post is on Github. People are welcome to use it for their own regional version. I can help you with that if necessary.

Previous editions

What it means

The numbers above are for those who had posted or commented in the previous month. In the lists below I break each region into three lists:

  • Active as above.
  • Just voting. I will guess that a lot of these use automatic votes, e.g. HiveVote. Previously there were some that appear to have been compromised as they vote for known abusers. Those are now excluded until I hear that they have recovered control.
  • Inactive in the last month, but most have done something since Hive started. We can hope to bring them back.

I want to count people rather than accounts as some have several. I can include those in brackets if you want. Let me know if you want me to update your listing. You can be as specific as you like about your location. Otherwise I will use what is on your profile or what I am told or can deduce from your posts.

Other Countries

I have produced similar lists for the following countries. Active numbers are from the last time I ran them. These have used simpler queries than what I use for the UK, so they are likely to miss people. What it needs is for local communities to take up this work. The data and scripts are all on my Github for anyone to make use of. I can do other lists on demand.

Commentary

Well we have had quite a drop in activity over the last month and that is sad to see. Perhaps the low price is taking its toll. I totally get it if people are busy elsewhere, but I still stick with Hive as I enjoy it and have plenty of friends here. I am less active on other platforms that I only really only use to stay in touch with a few friends. The exception is Mastodon that I also like for being a non-corporate, decentralised platform with some interesting people.

Meanwhile Hive is getting plenty of development with new games and other dapps. If you think something is missing then speak out. Developers are using the latest tools and can produce something fairly quickly if they see a demand.

Looking at the latest statistics from @arcange it seems that accounts at Dolphin level and higher are increasing, but we are losing active Minnows. They may stuggle to earn as they will not make much from curation and may lack the connections to get votes. As others have said it can make a big difference if people get support early on so if you see content you enjoy then support it and leave comments.

I really do not have all the answers on how to recruit and retain users as I have struggled with both myself, but then there is only so much I can do.

I hope we can see some improvements this year. If you know anyone who needs an account then I may be able to help as I have plenty of account creation tokens. Let me know of anyone who does join so I can add them to the list.

Shame about the numbers keep dropping. I haven't been in the loop recently on how easily and straightforward it is for newbies to come here and develop/grow when producing good content. I know that with myself, @theterminal was very good for my development on Hive with various competitions and guidance through their "redfish rally" projects. They also pointed me directly to communities like The Alliance and further things.

I am loving the new dapps being developed, too. Sportsblock is one I am really liking.

Sportsblock sounds like my kind of dApp. As I block all forms of sport from my life. Is it a game where you shoot someone if they mention football? 🤣

I don't know what the new user experience is like these days, but I'll help out where I can.

Shame about the numbers. Hive to me used to be fun when I started 5 years ago. We have the power up days and there was big hype around that. We had free giveaways for cards like Rising Stars cards. But the grownups shut all that down. Some of those grownups kicked off shitloads of users and communities. There is no point in getting new users to Hive if you don't cater to keeping the ones here.

The price is not really the main factor. People fed up with the DHF being bled dry and the grownups doing one thing but telling us plebs to do another.

Hive is great, it is the users that make it fun but by the same token some other users make it less so and drive people away.

Thanks for doing this and being one of the supporters of wee guys.

I think most of the big guys are okay and it's in their interest to get more people active. Some just have particular ideas about what has value and we can't do anything to stop them.

I'll keep on doing this anyway.

Thanks for the update ! The low Hive price may winnow out some of those who were just here to earn and extract some funds. I think the real issue is that with any social media system people drift off - boredom, lack of time, it feels like a grind not a pleasure, whatever. Our problem is that we're not refilling the reservoir with new users to compensate for those who go.

I keep thinking that the answer isn't to try to recruit new Hivers. It's to deliver software using the Hive blockchain to external users that they'll really like, and then see some of them come onboard as they discover what else the ecosystem has to offer. Just think of the impact of Splinterlands; it was sold to the public as a game, not a social media platform.

The one thing I'd like to see Hive develop (and I bang on about it all the time !) is a credible and widely adopted alternative to Discord. But I think the key is publicity and adoption, not development. There are a couple of apps we've got that look like the beginnings of a Discord replacement. With all the ID verification being forced in on centralised legacy platforms, now is an ideal time to promote a decentralised alternative to members of the public who don't like the idea of the state and corporations peering over their shoulder every time they post.

We have some private and group chat options now in peakd and ecency, but they are not connected together as far as I know. I would love to give up Discord.

There is a lot of competition for attention online and so Hive needs to stand out more. People are developing some cool apps and maybe some will break out.

Although I'm not in the UK, I always check the "Brit List" to discover interesting new authors. Excellent curation and statistical work!

I hope to continue this project and that it is useful to someone. We need similar lists for other countries, but I don't have time to do those very often. That's why I make my scripts available.

You like connecting people within the UK and beyond 😉

Update: @steevc, I paid out 10.103 HIVE and 0.000 HBD to reward 7 comments in this discussion thread.
